    I agree with some of what you said about the subplots, but the Mission storyline was the telling of the whole “Uprising” in the past in Silo 18. So feel it was good to understand this. Plus it covers the fact that they don’t kill off all disobedient silos. They can use the drugs to make them forget, which is why silo 18 is still running now

    Spoiler ->
    One thing you don’t mention is that the chapters alternate between Donald in the mid 2000s and “Troy” after 2100. It’s only after reading for a while that you realize that Troy is future Donald. I only just listened to the audiobooks since I only finally watched the TV series which lead me to want more. It is so worth it. Still have to get to Dust. Thanks for the review!

    I had a hard time trying to figure out Thurmans motives and what the whole point of the project was. And didn't they say silo 17 was imploded and if Juliette went there she'd find a hole in the ground? Yet she did go there and it was still an intact Silo. My fav part was Solo and Shadow. Cats are the best

    You said it didn't make sense why they would just kill whole silos for bad behavior but to me it just seemed telling of thurmans insanity. Even donald regrets it and realizes he did it under protocol and that it didn't make sense to him, he just lost all his memories and was working in a cloud sort of. I think that's also part of why victor killed himself - he realized they made a mistake and he couldn't live with making the protocol calls anymore. Thurman was just living in a dilusion that he could make people do what he wanted.

    One thing they didn't really explain / follow up on (note I haven't read Dust yet) was when Donald said that he saw "blue skies and green grass" just before the drone was destroyed. Did he really see this or did he imagine it? (as Charlotte didn't see it). If he did see it what does that mean? Are there areas above ground which have recovered? Did Thurman know this?

    I absolutely agree with you about the Mission and Jimmy subplots, I didn't enjoy those at all. I paid so little attention to Mission's story that I didn't even fully understand what really happened there.
    *Spoiler questions*
    1) So did I understand correctly that the air outside is "toxic" because of the nanobots? I mean after so many years, a nuclear fallout wouldn't be a thing, it doesn't last that long. That's what I was wondering about the most. And it would also explain the desolate state of the nature since the bots are mentioned to feet on anything living.
    2) So Thurman and others were responsible for nuking themselves? (the US) And if so, what happened to the rest of the world? I still don't fully understand the whole apocalypse moment, to me it was explained very briefly.
    Please don't include third book spoilers if there are any related since I'm starting to read that tomorrow.

    I actually enjoyed Jimmy's story since he is a character we meet in Book 1 and his backstory. The Mission one, I agree, I was more disconnected. I actually feel if all the SILO's and people in them new the truth, it'd be different and don't think there would be rebellions. "Hey here is the history of the world and due to nuclear holocaust you can't come out, we are constantly checking the atmosphere for when we can come out, for now, stay inside....."

    I wonder what the word "shift" means in the title. Does it mean "to change/move" or "a period of working time"?
    I've read this book in English and never thought about it. I mean I always thought about this word as a noun that means the period of time like in "night shift", because in the book those people in silo 1 worked in shifts. Can someone please tell me the meaning implied in this book title? Because in Russian they translated it as "a change", which doesnt seem right to me.

    • @megansreadingrevelations
      @megansreadingrevelations  ปีที่แล้ว

      I thinks it’s because people work in shifts, periods of time, and then are put to “sleep” again before their next shift. Although I’m sure there are more abstract meanings.

    • @taniamaiatattoo
      @taniamaiatattoo ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve just finished reading the book and my understanding of the title as a non American person is that “shift” it’s referred not only to the fact that the “workers” on silo 1 we’re working on a 6 months period before putting to sleep again to be woken decades later if needed but it’s also referred to the change they where trying to make in the humans knowledge about the world as it used to be. As Thurman said to Donald before he killed him that for the World to have a chance the knowledge had to die with them, a restart from scratch. A “SHIFT” of what it was to what it has to be.

    You have to take real life into consideration when you are trying to understand why the senator was killing silos. It is because they are looking for a group of people they can repopulate with, who are completely complacent. A group who will blindly and unquestioningly follow their leaders. My guess, not having read the books, is that _IF_ nanotechnology plays a role in the apocalypse that leads to the silos, it is extremely small or short-lived. And the ruling class, aka the senator, knew this from the onset, but instead chooses to use it as an excuse to seize more power from the citizenry. And given the perceived danger and mortal threat by an enemy, in this case the nanobots, the citizenry will willingly hand over those rights, not totally unlike real life examples in recent modern history. See Bush and The Patriot Act. This is made evident by the fact that the ruling class has frozen themselves until such time as they deem the remaining silo populations subservient enough and then like magic, suddenly the earth will become habitable and they can come out. And in doing so, they (the ruling class) would unfreeze themselves as supreme and unquestioned leaders, having finally created the ultimate priceless asset: a population they have total control over.

    Jimmy's subplot was rather boring. I think writer felt compelled to justify his being able to survive 30+ years by himself and to make it believable he had to include a lot of unnecessary details. Rebellion part was a bit underwhelming. Donald's story was gripping.
