    Love glimpses of sweet little Addy June. Your doing a great knit series. I totally agree with your DBP opinions. The JoAnn prices have really gone up over the last few years (with smaller discounts) and it doesn’t seem that the quality warrants the price for the majority of the fabrics. I don’t get to feel fabric very often so most of my purchases are from online shops. Knowing a little about fabric weight is also helpful when buying online. Watching fabric hauls is also helpful to see fabric from various stores…if one can resist impulse buying. 😉

      Hello, Brenda, thank you so much for watching and for such a kind comment, it means so much to me! Yes, you’re right, the prices have gone up, even since I’ve been sewing. Definitely makes it necessary to shop more savvy. That’s a great point, Brenda, about the fabric weight. I need more knowledge on that myself! Thanks so much for chatting with me, Brenda, I hope you’re having a great start to your week! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

    Joann Fabrics is definitely DBP central! I also can't believe all the flannel and fleece they carry year round. AND I LIVE IN FLORIDA!!! Great video. I've been sewing a long time, but I think you gave great pointers for beginning sexists.

      Hello, Diane, thank you so much for watching and for such a kind comment, it means so much to me! Yes! This Joann’s seemed to have an over abundance of fleece and flannel, maybe they’d already received this next seasons stock. People were buying it like crazy while I was in there as well. I remember thinking, it’s way too hot to be using that right now, haha, as we’re still in somewhat of a heat wave here in Indiana. It’s good to have options though, I guess. Thanks so much for chatting with me, Diane! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

    Hi Tiffany, thanks for taking us along on your shopping trip! And yes it's a little disappointing about the selection of knits there. The only place to find the cotton knits is in the kids' section. I've gotten them sometimes for comfy PJs or tees if the print appeals. I like the way your store is arranged as well. It's looking like some stores have some apparel fabrics on the wall, and the Clearance fabrics standing upright. Happy sewing, I'm sure they will be lovely!
    p.s. I ordered from Mily Mae Fabrics for the first time this summer and made the Compose Robe, a Luna Loungewear nightie, and some PJ shorts from a light french terry, and Love Them. 😉 the price was so reasonable I asked if that was the price for a 1/2 yard unit haha. (it was a whole yard)

    That made me chuckle, watching you going through the double brushed polly (not sure how you spell that). I went across from Canada to Port Huron specifically to go to Jo-Anne for a big cutting mat and some double brushed polly. They were having an up to 60% off everything sale. Unfortunately the patterns weren't on for $1.99, but probably good for my wallet. Lol. But they hardly had any double brushed polly (I still managed to find 3 that went with the capsule wardrobe I had in mind though, that I liked. Not wow fabric, but still nice. And that gave me a 50% off coupon for my cutting mat that wasn't on sale otherwise. So i did go home happy. I seldom see double brushed polly in Canada, and I really like to wear it in the colder months. I also picked up 4 new look patterns that were about a dollar off. I got N6728, N6626, N6651, and N6704. I looked at the one you got, but talked myself out of it because I have some like it, but I wish I had bought it now because I thought it was for woven fabric, and I would have bought it if I'd realized it was for knits. The ones I bought weren't necessarily for knits, but I do have fabric in my stash already that I want to use for them.

    You gave such amazing advice on shopping for knits Tiffany! I really like your tip on ordering samples whenever possible. When I first started sewing, I would order a ton of stuff I didn’t know anything about and most of that fabric ended-up being used for muslins only (not even wearable because I hated how the fabric felt on me). I could have avoided that had I gone to a fabric shop just to feel some of the different types of knits. It was a lot of fun to go shopping with you - I love all that DBP but agree with you that it’s not ideal for a summer dress! 😂💞

    I think Joanne’s prices are ridiculous for the quality of the fabric. I won’t use any polyester fabric. I really like Fabric Mart to buy fabric. Question for you, on the yellow with white flowers that you found in the juvenile area, it says it is 100% cotton but how could it be cotton and be stretchy? It was obviously a jersey as you can see from the rolling edges. I thought that anything that had stretching in it had to have some kind of Lycra, elastic, or non natural fiber. Am I mistaken?

    • @hoosierhandmade22
      @hoosierhandmade22  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, Julie! Thanks so much for watching and for such a great question. I think I can answer this one but perhaps more seasoned individuals from the sewing community can chime in as well.
      I believe the yellow fabric has stretch due to how the fabric was made. When we say Knit and Woven, we’re referring to how the fabric was constructed. Cotton Knit would be made differently than Cotton Woven. Although they’re both using the same materials, the stretch comes from how the fibers are “knitted” together. You’re exactly right, sometimes cotton knit types will have Lycra, spandex, etc. in them. I would hope they would always allude to the contents of the fabric on the label if they include those other types as well. Since this one only refers to 100% cotton, I’m going to assume the stretch is coming from how the fabric is made.
      Hope this answers your question, Julie! Thanks so much for chatting with me! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

      Hello ☺
      From what I found it probably has what is called "Mechanical stretch". Like the way a hand knit sweatshirt has the hability to stretch for example.
      "Mechanical stretch is the natural stretch a knit fabric has based on the way it is constructed. Knit fabrics are constructed from a single thread knitted into interlocking loops, giving the fabric its stretch. So, even if the material does not contain spandex it will still have some give."

      Addie is so beautiful! I really enjoyed this video! It’s been a long time since I’ve actually shopped for fabric because of my back issues. It’s so frustrating! I’ve been very involved in finishing the quilts for my 4 adult kids that I started in about 1985!! I’ve got the first one done, a sampler quilt in Southwest colors for my first daughter. It was totally hand quilted too. Now I’m finishing up my oldest sons quilt. It’s a double Irish chain in grunge patriotic colors. I had most of it quilted by a long armed because my arthritis has gotten so bad. But I had her leave some open space that I can hand quilt and I’m about half done with that. Then I’ll bind it and it will be done. His was started in 2005. Next I’m working on my second daughters radiant star quilt that she picked out the fabric for. It’s in dark purples, blues and greens. I will also have it long arm quilted with open space for me to quilt. Then for my youngest son I thought I had picked out fabric for a flying geese quilt but I can’t find it. Im going to have to tear my house apart! I did go to a quilt shop in the city across the state line. They just moved into a new, bigger building. I was looking for binding fabric and fabrics to start making hexies. Omg, there was so much fabric! I was so overwhelmed. My sweet husband came with me to help and I was so glad he was there! But it was fun!

    Thank you, Tiffany, for sharing your knowledge on knits. You picked out some beautiful fabric. I do have a questioin--what is double brushed poly and how do you know what it is just by feel? Thank you.

    • @hoosierhandmade22
      @hoosierhandmade22  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Carol, thank you so much for watching and for such a kind comment, it means so much to me! That’s a great question, Carol! Double Brushed Poly is a polyester and spandex blend that was designed, I believe, to mimic suede with a soft touch. During the fabric construction, they will brush both sides of the fabric to create that softness on each side. Single brushed poly would only be brushed on one side. I can usually tell DBP by the soft, cushy, almost peach like feeling. Like a peach, it’s fuzzy without seeing much fuzz, lol, if that makes sense.
      DBP comes in beautiful colors and prints as the fabric really holds color really well. My Joanns tends to have so many beautiful options. Down sides that I’ve found for Double Brushed Poly is that it has negative ease so it’ll make your garment even smaller than what you intended, clingy to parts of your body you might not want it to cling to. It also can be very hot to wear, especially during the summer months. I’ve found that the fabric content doesn’t breathe very well. I believe it was intentionally made to be an inexpensive option for soft knit but my Joann wants upwards of $18/yd now for their DBP so not really inexpensive in my book. There are other places, online especially, that has DBP for better prices, I think.
      Ok, I wrote a book there, sorry about that, maybe I need to do a video on this topic 😉 but hopefully this answers your question. Thanks so much for chatting with me, Carol! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

      Hello, Brooke, thank you so much for watching and for such a great question. I have not had any experience with a knit V neckband. I’ve just done a woven bias binding into a V shape. The woven V neck instructions were in the Rhapsody Blouse pattern, so Love Notions might have a video on YT about it.
      For a knit V-neck, I saw a video on YT by Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles. It’s a little lengthy, 24 minutes, I believe, but she usually has wonderful tutorials. Here’s the link to that video: th-cam.com/video/bx7RmOmVftg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pPoz3lYN0iX62zFq
