Thanks a lot for uploading all the Sonic Month videos, they are important pieces of Sonic prototype history. The Sonic 3 proto is one of the holy grails of Sonic.
I'm so glad I tuned in for this. Getting to see this revealed and played live was a hell of an experience. Fantastic job to everyone involved in finding this!
This prototype has blown the doors off their hinges with its reveal of the music that ended up going to the PC port, as well as the reveal of an early Drop Dash and Sonic 2-style sprites (among other discoveries). This is quite possibly the biggest breakthrough in the history of Sonic prototypes since the release of those builds of Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3C. Perhaps Sonic 3 Complete can be updated to include all these newfound gems? Also, I wonder if the guy who made that "Michael Jackson's Sonic 3" video has seen this prototype...?
I doubt there'll be an actual update after this long (since last update was in 2013), but maybe someone'll expand the ROM size to the Genesis' 5mb max limit, and include/alter what need be to accommodate for this stuff (like extra Final/Prototype palette options for Hydrocity, Launch Base, Mushroom Valley, Lava Reef, The Doomsday, Balloon Park and Chrome Gadget, an update to the "Flying Battery style" option so it actually uses the 1103 background and level chunks now that it doesn't just have a file select graphic to go offa, a similar option for Hydrocity, gifting Act 1 the prototype background, adding the 1103 music tracks (and if need be, replacing the ValleyBell arrangements, simply for filesize), maybe fix a few untouched palette anomalies brought up on the Sonic 3 Unlocked blog, maybe an option for restoring the surfboard intro, adding optional features to enable some alterations made in Sonic Origins (like the new Super Sonic theme), porting New Blue Spheres (if that's at all possible) and making the unused proto theme play for that mode's results screen, adding the Drop Dash, Robotnik with blue glasses, Launch Base's previously unused scaling sprites for the end of the Big Arm boss, include Sonic Mania's blue ring monitor, etc.)… I dunno, maybe we'll see an improvement patch on romhacking.net one of these days.
I’m here first to give a massive thank you to DRX and Hidden Palace for finding this prototype because I’m fairly certain that this revelation is the reason why Sonic 3 is coming back in Sonic Origins after 11 years of legal hell 😁😁

Not sure, but it seems like they patched the data from this prototype into Sonic 3C (the Sonic & Knuckles prototypes) in order to make Lava Reef Zone 1 load (probably easier than patching it on the prototype itself because of all the missing data). Mushroom Hill was just an "oops, I selected the wrong option" moment.
@@RanAwaySuccessfully I thought it was that some data physically exists on the EPROMS but wasn't a part of this actual build of Sonic 3. Like, a bigger, older version of Sonic 3 was overwritten with this version and the data that wasn't overwritten luckily contained some useable layouts and palletes. Sometimes you get a situation like that but the left over data is from a different game because EPROMS are reusable.
@@andyukmonkey Yeah, from what I know, it seems like the cartridge had an older build of Sonic 3, which was then overwritten with _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ (or it may have been the other way around, not sure), which was then overwritten with this build of Sonic 3. The problem is that the leftover data isn't entirely intact. Lava Reef is a good example of this. You can load Act 1 with just half a dozen GameShark codes, but Act 2 doesn't have any graphics or mappings remaining, meaning you have to port those over from Sonic 3C 0408. And even then, the layout is a bit corrupted as well, which requires manual fixes. The only Mushroom Valley data found was the palette and some badniks (which crash the game). The layout shown there was probably 0408's. Though thinking more about it, they probably DID patch the Sonic 3C data into Sonic 3 (not the other way around as I said earlier) because otherwise, Sonic's sprite would have changed. But either way, the end result would have been more or less the same.
It's explained that the Mushroom Valley thing is a WIP patch, a bit more complex than the Lava Reef one. There already exists a palette, the level music, coding for a few of the badniks, and a very minimalist object layout; All that'd need to be done is an approximated level map, to match with said object layout.
2:15:47 You can see blue knuckles so this means 2 things. 1. Knuckles was supposed to be in this prototype. 2. This glitch was long before the game was released.
No. Theres actually Sonic 1 Debut its basically Sonic 1 TTS but its WIP. Some guy named BonMario leaked a Sonic 1 debut that was early but it was like Sonic 1 tts but kind of with its touch
Here's a thought: Though the beta Carnival Night theme sounds better, the Michael Jackson version works better in practice. Carnival Night has so many sound effects, but MJ's simpler theme keeps the sound effects from having to override the music. The beta theme kept getting interrupted by bumper sounds that cut off the music audio
LittleBird I know very little about the sound engine in the Sega genesis let alone this game so take this with a grain of salt but it’s very well possible the overrides were more from the sound engine being in a super buggy state. Again I don’t know enough about the sound engine or the compositions themselves to say for sure. You could very well be right.
Funny thing is I actually didn't know that section in Ice Cap Zone was meant for knuckles, because I used a glitch, sorry, one of "Eggman's Diabolical Traps" to get there.
So, I have some questions about this years sonic month, I’m really excited for it, and I’m hoping some big discoveries are made. What time are they usually at, and what day of the week are they on? Do you have any ideas on what we’ll be seeing, or you haven’t found the roms yet? We’re all hoping if any mystery’s get solved, like where the prototype of sonic 1 is, or what r2 looks like.
Seeing the chat collectively lose its shit when the PC music for Carnival Night begins playing is a magical experience and one we can never replicate

you should also include when knuckles pc theme was revealed during the AIZ 2 cutscene because that was also a good reaction from chat

Funny, because the majority of the VC knew immediately that the PC music was in this build when we heard Knuckles' theme.

There's also the miniboss theme at 1:13:08 - where it uses the S3K miniboss tune instead of S3, the first sign that the MJ tunes are missing.

Here's a thought:
Though the beta Carnival Night theme sounds better, the Michael Jackson version works better in practice.
