Lifan KPM200 LONG TERM REVIEW: Is the $3000 Motorcycle worth it?

- There's been a lot of hyper surrounding Lifan's KPM200 Motorcycle: I've owned it for a year now and I really do enjoy riding the bike, but has it been reliable?
Seriously though, if you're looking at this bike, buy it. There really isn't better value for money, and it's a hell of a lot nicer than a grom.
Most people in the states don't realize Lifan been in the bike making business for the last 20-30 years in Europe and Asia and only recently got into the states.
Agreed! Since recording I'm actually closer to 6K miles on it now, and she still runs great. Amazing bike for the money.

I used a double chipset led on my 21 Lifan Xpect. It has helped tremendously.

I had a Harley Night Rod and I got tired of all of that weight. It was very fast, but I am now 50 and I think this is the kind of bike I am going to slide into. I have a Hawk 250 DLX which I am not a big fan of, but it is light and fun. I am not into off-road as much anymore, so this café bike looks great!

@@ncikbishop1979 it's definitely impressive. What it lacks in direct power it makes up for with killer looks and very strong build quality. I also ride a Benelli tnt600 right now and honestly the lifan is better built in many ways and has given me less problems too ;)

@@ncikbishop1979 like the DLX Hawk 250? my buddy rides one and it feels slightly more powerful down low, but that's really just because of the reduced weight from being a dual sport. After 40mph the KPM feels much more stable and can comfortably do 70; the Hawk felt like it was gonna rattle itself apart😂

Thank you for making this video. I saw this bike at a power sport shop a year ago. The 2021 version. And I was like "damn that seems like a good price." I've never owned a bike I'm getting my license next month to ride a motorcycle. And I've been heavily considering going back and seeing if they have this bike. And it's reassuring to see this video. @@Clark.V I'm loving it. Already have 1k miles on. Only thing is it's definitely not a highway bike. It's definitely a bike you'll graduate from because you'll want something quicker afterwards. But for bumming through town and the occasional highway trip, it's great
I actually just bought one of these with 920 miles on it, the guys wife dumped it, not bad damage, cosmetic only, and a front peg on the right side, I have to say this bike for the price I paid for 1600$ is really really nice, I love the clutch it's smooth, remind you I've only had scooters, full automatic on those, I've stalled it maybe a total of 5 times since I've boughten it on friday,. I can't wait to get my endorsement, and have it registered in my name and insured, I'll ride everywhere with this, maybe not the freeways for long hauls, maxing out the rpms for long periods like that are somewhat not so healthy for engines, but short freeway usage yes, he did some modding to it, so it'll do 110mph at lower rpms so I potentially could go long distances, again he just told me that I have no proof of him actually doing so, but again he didn't lie about what was wrong with it, or what his wife did, it's literally just cosmetics, nothing huge at all, simple cheap replacement parts, but the parts are still functional, he said he was selling it for cheaper because his wife jist cannot ride bikes, so wanted it just gone asap, and obo
Thanks for the review. Truly I’m greatly appreciative. I’m like 99% certain this is going to be my starter bike after researching for the past month and looking at dozens of bikes. It’s not even necessarily about the price, although that’s a huge benefit, but my choice is based mostly on the comfort and I really love the styling of this bike.
Now, to start looking up where to take a class and get this ball rolling.

Dude congrats!! Yeah 100%, get the bike that speaks to your heart. I've sinced moved on from the humble little KPM but I loved it soo much that I used to commute 100+ miles on the highway with it- and we made it work!
If you love the bike, nothing will stop you from enjoying it :) although if you do plan to ride long distance with it and exhaust and windscreen are basically must-haves lol

This is a very good review. It's a very affordable bike and disk brake on the back too.
I ride a Honda SH125i which in the UK is now £3900.
It's around 12.5 bhp, as a lot of technology on it. The reason I mention this bike is when I turn on high beam, I do not lose the mean beam.
If I did lose the mean beam, the high beam would be the same as your bike
a narrow beam forward.
Long term review is less than a year of ownership!? At least you have a few thousand miles on it. After a few thousand you really start getting a solid feel for a bike The Lifans are the best of the Chinese bikes. But like most things, if you treat them well and maintain them, you can get a lot of life out of them. There's a guy that has 12k miles on a Lifan Xpect and he has many videos of beating that poor bike. He took it through a water hole up to the seat, he takes it over jumps, he does long runs with it completely red lined. 12k miles running it like you stole it is pretty amazing on such a cheap bike. I have a couple Hondas and just ordered a Lifan Xpect. I typically put about 4-5k miles on my bikes per year. I'm curious how much seat time I can put on the Lifan before something catastrophic happens. I'm a small engine mechanic by trade so I will be maintaining it and am capable of diagnosing and making repairs as needed. I want to do videos because there are not a lot of them out there for the Xpect.

My god… I think I would get this if it was more Adventure/touring like a Himalayan or a KLR but the more I keep searching my price point is climbing ever more lol. Hey, thanks so much for the comment! As far as I'm aware I don't think any dealers have started importing them to the states yet, but Lifan does make a KPT(Trail)200, which is literally this bike but as an ADV. That Himalayan looks sick as hell! I love the rugged yet classy look :)
@@slow_bike_show oh for sure! And yea I just looked up the KPT200 and yea that is something I’d definitely would go with. I even seen your video on the KPM and the accessories. Which made me think, “wow you can turn that into a decent adventure style bike” the only thing I’d change on the KPM is the tires just for the off road experience. Here’s hoping that you find a quick way to get a Go pro x,y, or z soon so I can watch some of your vlogs.
No matter which bike I get I know I’m going to need 800-900$ extra for equipment and vlogging gear haha
@@Hoontan2020 I have not bought one yet, I’m Sold on getting the Himalayan, I won’t need to look for any other bike. The kpm200 I think too would be a great starter bike, but I think I’m just going to stick to the map and get the Himalayan. KLR, and Lifan kpm200 may be down the road bikes.
Im Not a fan of chinese bikes, but lifans probably the best of them. Ive had a riding mower with a lifan engine and its held up very well over five years.
TBR7 is a good bike. I’m at 12k miles and Iv replaced nothing and my top speed after changing the gears is around 82 mph

@@brandonhall3420 I’m set up the same but I slapped on a nibbi carb and a oil cooler and nibbi ignition coil. I only weigh 130 too so that helps.
Lifan also owns the car company lotus. Lotus makes great cars as well

Bikes and Beards did a good review on this where the main guy and mechanic both bought them and tested out. And they are tall guys as well, but thought these were great for the price.

totally! I've taken a few long distance (100+ mile) trips on it, and it's proven to be pretty damn reliable thus far. All it needs is a good set of scrambler tyres ;)
Thanks for the review man! I was searching for a gentle-with-the-pocket bike close to cafe racer/brat style... but it becomes confusing fast with chinese brands. The full led and electronic injection got me.
Hey thanks for watching!! Yeah the EFI is super nice. They like to talk about Chinese bikes in three "generations".
- Gen 1 is dongfang/HAWK250 type stuff, where Chinese bikes got their rep as bad quality. These WILL break and parts fall off etc. Bad value for the cheapest money
- Gen 2 are bikes like SSR, CSC Motorcycles and some grom clones. Not terrible and mostly reliable, still very cheap
- Gen 3 are indistinguishable from Japanese bikes of the same capacity with great build quality and reliability, these include CFMOTO. Lifan and to some extent Benelli. The KPM absolutely falls into this category and it's a hoot! These are the brands you should look for, because any bike from them is a joy.

I have a Lifan bike for years, no problems. You don't need premium fuel, 87 will do just fine. FYI: Harley and most European bikes have been Chinese made for decades.

@@slow_bike_show 2005 Lifan LF 250 Cruiser (looks like the Rebel) bought it in Hong Kong ship to my post in the Philippines and the military ship it to the US. My Niece is riding it in college.
Nice bike. Logan make good stuff. Just make sure you change the oil regularly. A lot of people treat Chinese bikes like shit. Yours looks great though. Don't take these bikes past redline. Engine wear as you go higher up the rev range gets exponentially worse. I burnt the piston rings on my bike from keeping the revs too high. I then changed my riding style to mostly stay mid rev range. The valves never moved in 15k miles.

Hey thanks so much! Life is pretty busy right now so I'm not sure when I'll have time to make another video but I'd really like to soon. As for two up riding, its great in the city and on backroads, but launches can be a little hard especially up a steep hill. You still have power, just a little less than you might have otherwise haha. Me two-up with my girlfriend (350lbs total) makes thr acceleration in line with a grom more or less.

Great video, I’m considering getting this as my first bike, love the look and obviously price. My only concern is how smooth it is. You mentioned it’s a little jumpy. Is it something I should consider or do you think it will become a non issue as I get more used to the bike? Does the clutch feel jerky aswell or is it just the throttle?

the more aggressive fueling is totally not a deal breaker. You get used to it and along with proper clutch control, you rarely notice it. I only really notice it when carrying passengers or if I change to a new pair of gloves and lose good "throttle feel". Clutch engages smooth as hell and feels incredibly well built - honestly the "crispy" throttle response is just something you see in a lot of these sport tuned motors and it's more a matter of preference than anything, in fact I actually really like it when I'm doing hard pulls from 20-50mph
I know it looks cool but you should really skip it man for your first bike. It's going to be $3,000 you're going to end up wasting cuz you're going to want something different.
Look at picking up a used Yamaha R3 or Mt 03.
@@dangerous8333 most those used bikes have been beaten to death, dropped, scraped up, not maintained properly, some have been cable tied to death, rebuilt accident motorcycles, no title, so can't register.....that is what I have been seeing in used market. Why take the risk?
You honestly really should, I love mine already and I just got it on Friday, memorial day weekend, its fantastic honestly, it runs super good, barely tap the starter button and it's literally already running, already getting the feel for the manual shifting nature of motorcycles, it's super awesome, I even named mined Charles 😅

Just bought this bike as my first motorcycle and it's going to be what I use to learn on. I'm very ocd when it comes to the maintenance on my cars so I'm curious as to what other maintenance you have done besides oil changes?
Congrats!! you're gonna love it. The manual will detail everything, luckily it's a very simple bike to maintain. I need to do the valves now, but I'm probably gonna go to a mechanic for that. The valve covers are in a really awkward spot and all-in-all just suck to do without pro-grade tools. That and the 0.08/0.12mm feeler gauges are not easy to come by. So far I had to adjust the chain tension (20 min job max) and wash out the air filter. These Lifan engines are honestly pretty bulletproof, they should last you a long time :)
Thanks for the reply. There haven't been any videos on doing the maintenance for these bikes so I wasnt sure. It's good to know that they do actually include it in the manual. I'd definitely recommend doing some videos for the basic maintenance since there isn't anyone else making them.

Hey thanks for watching! I fit okay on this bike as a 6'3 dude, much better than a grom. If you want a similar idea, it's about as big as a Honda rebel 300 with a more sporty seating position

have you tried flipping those bar clamps so those tabs stick out instead of in? maybe you could fit your mount in the center then.

So I just got one, but I’m hearing this whining sound once every rotation on the back wheel when you push in neutral. You can hear it in low gears too.
Sounds like new chain noise :) it'll go away once you throw some oil and a little grime after a few dozen miles ;) thanks for watching!
Like You can get a Running 1st Gen R6 for between 3 and 4k. And this is one of those Amazon Bikes if I'm not mistaken..
Great video. I’m training to start riding and this seems like an amazing first bike. My only concern is I’m almost 6’3 and 210-215 lbs. Will this bike handle this size. I would assume it would.
Thanks for watching! Yeah you'll be great for it. It's definitely a more compact bike, but overall still flickable and fun. I'm your height with a little extra weight and no problems at all holding up to around 65 :)
I will say that the performance exhaust I have on combined with an air filter mod I'm working on has done a lot to improve the speed and versatility of this machine😁 stay tuned!
I'm 6'3", 160# and just took mine on its first test around the block. It definitely is almost a perfect fit for my size. Comfortable slight bend of the knee with feet down and legs tuck in nicely.
I was worried at first that I'd be to tall for it but it turned out just fine.

@@slow_bike_show Yes I am, it ended in four nasty scrapes. This my first time on a manual and trying to learn the feel of the clutch left me with a couple mistakes.
All good though, I'm on a near no traffic culdisac which is great for learning.
@@davidl9943 oh no! Have you had your MSF course yet? One drill they did that helped a lot was to "rock the bike". Start with both your feet in FRONT of the pegs, then slowly release the clutch and slip it until your feet are behind the pegs. Brake, scoot your feet forward and repeat until you own that friction zone.

it's a callback to the tank straps from cafe racers of the 40s-60s. On this bike it's more for looks, which is true for a lot of the KPM since Lifan really flexed their design prowess with it :)
Hi! I was so glad to fing your video! I am considering buying this bike for my commute to work and to build credit. It would be my first one. I'm drive about 70 miles per day 5 days a week. Would you recommend this bike for that kind of commute? It's like 90% 2 lane country roads with about 5 min of 4 lane and about 7 min on a bypass. Thanks!

My answer is.. ehh.. itll do it, but you're definitely gonna be sticking to 55 most of the way with short jaunts up to 75mph. If you're lighter than me (220lbs) and you put some work into a sprocket change, it'd be super comfy. If you're strapped for cash the gas mileage is worth it. Yes you won't be the fastest thing on the road but you'll be getting 80+ MPG the entire way down :) I would even consider the KPR200 for some wind protection too.
Listen buddy I'll have you know that I currently drive a 1990 Nissan Sentra capable of sticking to 55 with short jaunts of 63 1/2 so that's not an issue 😂. I just wanna be confident that the bike will hold up to the task. Is there an expected lifespan for these? The lack of information on these bikes online is staggering. The only information I can find is people talking about how awesome they are lol.
@@rayneman131 that's because they are awesome!😂 over 6K on the clock for me with no issues now. Just check the valves every 3-5k miles and you'll be golden. It's a simple machine, not much can go wrong. Bikes and beards went and redlined their KPR200 (same engine) for 24 hours without issue :) it'll hold up, just don't expect to be passing everyone.
@@rayneman131 oh and also the engine is based on a kawasaki 200cc single sold in India. Lifan has been making industrial motors for decades, they know how to put together a quality engine. I wouldn't worry and especially if you go with venom motorsports you'll have that 2 year, 12000 mile warranty to back ya up

Yes, it's 1960's British style, they pieced a cafe bike together with scrounged parts and a belt held the tank on lol, it's just for looks here.

If you can ride a bicycle you can ride a motorcycle. Find a friend in a motorcycle club if you need to. But me I just got on and went slow at first but these small motorcycles are really easy to learn on.
So what's the story on the inverted handlebar? Was it hitting the tank? I would like to get it low-profiled too once I get mine. Is it better to get clip-ons? But I worry with the headlight casing, there isn't much room for clip-ons. Would like to get your opinion on this. TIA.
Hey, so sorry for the late reply! It's been crazy with school. I had to drill holes to invert the bars but other than that it's not a huge deal. Very easy job and they don't hit the tank as long as you angle them forwards just a little. I've been riding with em for about 4 months now and it's definitely an improvement in looks and comfort. If you wanna do it right though, get some 49mm clip on bars and they'll fit great :)

hmm.. maybe! it's mounted to the tank with three m2 bolts. Just a regular serial connector too, so moving it shouldn't be too hard as long as you're cool with the gap where it used to be haha. thanks for watching!
nice review, is the 200cc single an ohv or an ohc?
It's a family modern engine! Liquid cooled, OHV and OHC. My only gripe is that it's a SOCH setup as opposed to dual cams. They left a fair bit of power on the table in this class of displacement because of that. (See: Duke 200) thanks for watching!!
@@slow_bike_show thanks for the prompt reply and the info. SOHC had the valves overhead, but generally "OHV" refers to the older tech pushrod mills. Lifan is kinda famous for building clones of Honda OHV/ pushrod singles... Down on power but crazy low maintenance and reliable.
But sohc is cool by me, too. There's actually a local Lifan dealer bar me in Jersey, maybe 15 miles away or less. I'll a closer look in person. Thanks again for the thorough and awesome review
Where do you ride? I'm in Phoenix and I'm making mine a scrambler. I got it last week and by the end of this week I'll have knobies and full exhaust. I did the levers and grips because they suck from the factory.

You were saying how there was no rev limiter. Im not knowledgeable about vehicles. Is this something you can add on the aftermarket?
hey thanks for watching! not that I know of... technically you can since the Rev limiter is a function of the ECU (the actual computer part of a modern engine) but you'd either need to load custom software onto the existing one (very hard) or find another ECU (very difficult). in practice it never really was an issue, but I did miss being able to bounce it off the limiter to show off ;)
There’s no storage in the bike correct? Can we attach saddlebags?
No, sadly there's no storage in the bike, but I just posted a video with some mods made for this bike, including some proper storage options ;)

Hi thank you for the video... I m on the plus side of 250lb and with gear and a backpack id be pushing something close to 290 I bet... At this high weight..should I leave this bike at the factory and look for something with more cc's. This would be a first bike before moving up to a CBR sport bike. Thank you again.
Just get an older 600cc and you'll be grinning from ear to ear for a very long time. I just picked up a mid 90's fzr600 for 1200 and I literally cant sit still the last hr before im off work because im so eager to just get on the bike and ride.
quick question, do you have the carburated version or the fuel injected one? i have the carburated version and sometimes have problems with the bike turning off on me from time to time. any suggestions?
Wow! I didn't even know Lifan made a carb'ed KPM. I have the 2020 EFI version, but from my limited experience with 2 stroke pit bikes, change/replace the jet and see if that helps? Usually they're jetted pretty lean. I know some people have had start/stop issues with the X-Pect, and Lifans official guidance was to check the valve clearances. (this is a really easy job on the xpect, SUCKS on the KPM)

@@miguelangelalgaranaz1471 totally! I would also recommend switching to a nibbi carb or pretty much anything third party, as they usually run better than stock and are somewhat cheap.

I've been using 87 in my kpr but you think I should use premium I don't know much about it so that's why I was asking
With 11:1 Compression, I'd run premium, but I'm not sure what the stock tune is for. If you aren't hearing any pre-detonation or knocking though, you're fine and the difference would be marginal :)
@@slow_bike_show yeah thanks haven't had any problems with it other than it just it's kind of hard to start when it's cold but other than that it's been good oh and one more question actually when you fill up the oil do you fill it up to the full Gage on its side or when it's standing up cuz I keep asking people but they give me different answers

My recommendation is to go to a shop and have them weld on a slip on adapter, then use anything for a ninja 250. You can find some cheap pipes on amazon too ;)
Check the OD of the pipe pretty sure Coffmans has a shorty fits this same as CBR 250
Can you remove the straps on the tank? Or do they hold the tank on.
yeah, you can totally remove them! the tank has a traditional grommet and bolt mount underneath so I'm 99% sure the straps are superficial. you can pull them off with a 4mm Allen key.

Looking to get my first bike. I don't have a huge budget and just need something to get to work and back and run little errands. I was going to get a Honda Navi but it seems too slow. I decided on a Lifan KP mini 150cc. But now I discovered this kpm200 for not much more. Can you make any suggestions on which I should invest in? Thanks 🤘
Hands down get the KPM200. I've also seen the KPR200 (Same bike but with fairings) for like $2-500 less so by all means go for it, but these bikes are much more comfortable than the KP-Minis and feel more full sized. Still tiny and light by all means, but it's a tad more practical :)

@@yogsothoth9890 deeefinitely! Honestly you're probably the perfect size for the KPM. It's not the biggest bike in the world so I wouldn't worry about it being too big for ya, and it's a very controlled level of power. Very tame below 5K RPM; it'll be forgiving if you go slow but you'll still be able to open her up and have some fun!
What type of motorcycle oil do you use for this? Im having problems finding the 15w40
I've used 10w40 for the same reasons with no issues whatsoever :) just make sure you get motorcycle specific oil but other than that the 10W just means it'll be a little happier to rev :) thanks for watching!

15w40 is basically unique to synthetic, for whatever reason. Last year I drove an HOUR to a Wal-Mart that had a 5QT jug of Mobil1 on sale for like $22. And the only reason why I did that was because I was tasked with fixing one of my father-in-law's Gravely zero-turn mower's hydro motors, which specifies 15w40 in them and I didn't want to hear any bitching if something didn't work right afterwards. ONE quart of Gravely-branded 15w40 is a solid $15.
But I can't imagine that's needed for this engine. Stick to quality filters and dino oil and you should be fine here.

Hi again, how did the bike start in the winter and did you ever have to change the battery or spark plug? My kpm200 is having a hard time starting in these cold winter mornings.
Sorry to hear! So a year and a half later and I'm still running the stock spark plug and battery. Have you gotten your valves adjusted? That can be a big reason for hard starts especially during the cold. I'd also check idle speed and see if you need adjusting, anywhere from 1500 to 2000 rpm is good😊
I've had my kpr for 7 months seems to be doing good got 4,000 miles on it, I got it for gas saving it says it gets 109 miles per gallon which I think it is pretty close cuz I feel like $15 for like 4 days of riding from work to home so far so good

I have three separate quart sized oil for the bike. How much of those should I put in when I first get the bike?
If you get it from Venom it should have oil already- check the sight glass. Otherwise it takes just under 1.25 quarts 😁

Nah, I'm 6'3 and fit fine so long as I don't take any passengers. It's smaller don't get me wrong, but not grom small.

Is KPM and KPR and KP all the same engine? Just different looks?
More or less! The newest KPR is the same as the KPM, but pre-2019 KPRs used a gen 1 version of the engine that lacked an oil filter and some other stuff. I've seen questionable reliability on the gen 1 engines- but that's coming from people who've pushed these engines to 90+mph well past redline.
If you can get the KPR with the NBF-gen 2, get that!
Also if you can swing it get the CFmoto 300ss. I rode the 450 and the 300 a few weeks back and both blow the (already nice) lifans out of the water performance wise.
I will be getting a 450SS by the end of the summer hopefully so content should come from that since I have a lot to say about it!😁

@OneinTheChamber06 very fair, that's the same reason i bought the KPM haha.
If you can swing it, the 300SS or NK isn't too much more and is a better motorcycle for highways and backroads where the KPM fizzles out a bit. If all your riding is in the city or suburbs below 50mph the KPR and KPM both will feel fairly fast.

Hello, would someone who is 5' 3" be able to ride comfortably? Feet flat on the ground?
Hey thanks for watching! you'll definitely able to ride it but you may have trouble flat-footing it- then again. It all depends on your inseam. The seat-height is 30.7 inches and the bench seat is a little wide.
That being said, my girlfriend could ride it comfortably at 5'2 and just put one foot down at stoplights. Flat-footing it by having the bike leaned ever so slightly, so you should be good :)

Everyone rags on the Chinese bikes but they are bulletproof typically. The Enduro 250s run in Africa for ever even in the heat air cooled.👍

I'm in Oregon as well. How difficult was it to take the MCO to the DMV and get the bike registered and titled in Oregon?
Hey nice! It was super easy. Just bring the MCO and bill of sale with you, and the DMV will handle the rest. Be prepared to pay a very small tax, as well as registration registration fees. In total, I think I was out about $330.
4 quarts in 3000 miles is that just an oil change or actual use?
just a bunch of anxious oil changes. since then I've been changing it every 3000miles with no issue :)
for that price you can get a good used japanese bike.....but a lot of sellers are not honest...so if you dont know much about bikes, its risky to buy used ones
