  • Ok so you might think this is strange (given my last video was my luxury bag collection) but are designer bags actually worth the money? and what are we REALLY paying for? This video was inspired by Tanner Leatherstein's videos on Tiktok and they got me thinking about the mark up that designer bags are sold at and what does that mark up pay for...ENJOY!

her economics degree is coming in handy 🤣
but in all seriousness, cassie, thank you for bringing to the fore the endless list of things that goes into pricing luxury items. prior to studying my degree in fashion business, i did not know just how vast and deep the fashion industry ran
i hope that by you spelling them out, allows more people to understand that when we buy luxury items, we’re also contributing back to the economy as the mark-ups comprise of people’s salaries
and the backbone of luxury is the fantasy and mystique that it’s shrouded by. if looking expensive and buying a status symbol is the fantasy we’re after, go ahead and live your very best life. and if wearing a non-designer, low-priced canvas tote bag around is what works for you, that’s absolutely fine too!
everyone should deserve to live and of course, dress to live in the way they feel most comfortable. neither is up for judgement ❤

The only ppl being well paid at any of these companies sit in the c-suite. Are we applauding overpaying execs now? When artisans make a basic income?

    • @yoloyihi
      @yoloyihi ปีที่แล้ว

@@sfjayhawk5810 we applaud each person behind every piece of garment we own and love.
without skilled artisans, we won’t own the quality product we own. and without top executives making acute business decisions, the product would not have the luxury appeal that we buy into.
every role is important, but some are just more highly paid than others because our society rewards brainwork more highly than handwork. as long as artisans are remunerated and treated as they deserve, i don’t see an issue as a paying consumer.

I love this video because it's spot on. I wish more people would be honest with themselves when buying designer. You buy it for the style and absolutely the name. Chanel rain boots are over $1K, do people seriously think they use a better quality rubber.
I just want people to be honest and admit the bags are definitely marked up but they don't need to justify why they purchase.

I think it all comes down to childhood and upbringing. I think a lot of people have very instilled beliefs due to their experiences growing up. What is normalized to you, may not be normalized to someone else. Also it is hard to find a community that truly understands art, fashion, and creativity and that does not shame people for what they love and what they spend their money on, just because it’s not what they are passionate about/what they choose to spend their disposable income on. Very interesting video.

I would partially agree. I'm a creative who has always done art, worked with textiles and sewed . I do home design for a living but love other designed goods besides for homes . It is very rare for me to like a bag and see something I love (hello Alexander McQueen brass knuckles bag ! may he RIP he died to young and it's not the same ) , let alone want to buy. I believe beyond the markup it's all about marketing and hype especially for the smaller bags. They simply aren't worth the price, no bag is worth a downpayment on a home, or the amount of a used car !! for those prices I'd rather have land, mineral rights and gemstones. Depending on the bag it's worth it , however most are just that - status symbols

    • @V_4_Versace
      @V_4_Versace ปีที่แล้ว +34

Is it just because they are influencers or you just don’t like people getting items for free? I feel like the latter has always been a thing. Before influencers, it was celebrities, before them, it was models, before (also during and after) that it’s random rich people. So idk for me it’s hard to be mad at any one particular group when I know pretty much anything I buy will be given away to someone else for free, but I also recognize that that’s also half the reason I even know about a product, down to the reviews (which people are given products for free to review) so it’s just good business on their part imo.

Its no surprise that luxury items dont actually cost what we pay. The industry has to make money after all, its mainly the name you are paying for. You're 100% right.
Some people care way too much about other people's lives. Everyone has a right to do what they want in their life, and that includes how they spend their money. You like luxury handbags, other people may like comic books, coins, or jewelry. If you're a true collector, it can get very expensive no matter what you collect.
I think people need to worry about their own lives more than other people's.
I have way too many problems in my life to worry about how much someone is spending on a bag. I won't be buying it, I just like just watching the videos for enjoyment.
Plus, you have a great personality, and your videos are fun. ❤

This is why I will never buy into “quiet” bags. None of them are really worth what you are paying. If it doesn’t have a label or isn’t an obvious designer item, why would you spend the money? Why would I spend $1500 on a Saint Laurent tote bag when I could shop at Cuyana, or even Madewell and buy something similar for a fraction of the price and go on my understated way. It’s such a silly concept to me. If I was really wealthy and the price didn’t matter maybe it would be different, but most of us looking at TH-cam videos and social media for reviews are saving every penny for these bags….they need to be special!

Such an honest, thorough take on the markups inc. the acknowledgment of decline in quality in many Houses. And thank you as well for always bringing up the logo issue: I am all about having a little logo---the fantasy of it, as you say. There are beautiful, excellent quality products out there at a reasonable price and I buy those. But the whole point of my occasional luxury treat (my view) is that it's special and, in my middle class life, I like adding a little logo splash for panache, a little "flex" (once again using Cassie-speak).So, I'm all about logos and most people are, too. In the lux community, Cassie has ALWAYS had that refreshing, matter-of-fact-honesty about the CC's, GG's, YSL's, etc.

Thank you for sharing. I like how Tanner says at the end of his assessment that if you’re willing to pay the “premium” ,which is everything you’ve explained ,then that is totally up to you. Just like you have explained, a lot of people seem to think it is 100% about the quality and at the end of the day that’s why the price is so high. Most of the cost is the name and what that brings with it. Plain and simple. Decide if you’re going to hop on the train or don’t. Either way is fine. Just don’t look down or judge others for a decision they’ve made. Everyone has their reasons for doing things and it is totally their choice.

Love love love this video. I think its important to know the behind the scenes reason for the high prices of these luxury brands. I’ve always known the leather for some (not all) luxury bags were not always the best and that I was indeed paying for the brand and yes…. The logo. But for me it was worth it. I loved either the look or the style of the bag and no dupe (I do not like fakes) would ever really be the same or enough for me to not want to the buy the actual bag. So at the end of the day as with most of our choices in life…. It’s a personal choice to make. What is worth. Your $$$$$ and what is not? I love watching that guy deconstruct luxury bags and I have learned a lot from him. But it won’t stop me from buying what I love and want. If anything he has opened me to contemporary brands I would have otherwise never considered. But my love for the luxury bags isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. 😂 Thanks for the great video and chat!

Honestly, when you purchase luxury fashion and jewellery, you're rarely ever paying for the quality of product itself. You're paying for the brand name, the marketing and the luxury experience to complement the purchase of the item, although that's gone down hill too. I love Louboutin's and couldn't care less if people think they're no longer in style because I genuinely like Christian Louboutin's styles and experience joy each time I wear my shoes. I am aware it probably cost less than $100 to create the shoe, but I love the brand enough to pay the price. I think some people feel shame admitting that they're willing to pay thousands for a brand name, so hide behind the "quality and ethics" argument. I also think some people purchase luxury goods because it's a form of social validation and esteem boosting. "I have value because I can afford this brand name item." which is a dangerous path to walk as I believe this could lead to getting into serious debt to fill a void.

Excellent video! It's important to understand that the cost of luxury is not a direct correlation to the quality. The videos showing quality and costs clearly demonstrate that. He showed a Chanel wallet that was around $20 to make and it was $2K (roughly)! So, if you don't mind paying for all of the pomp and circumstance, then yes buy the luxury bag. However, if you want equal and/or sometimes better quality leather goods and craftsmanship ONLY, know that it can be easily found. The great thing is that we all have options to get what we want. Luxury anything can be found (almost always) of equal or better quality somewhere else at a market value that reflects the true value/price. that Pillow Tabby is around $600, but it if had an LV or YSL logo on it, it would easily be $4K or more. So, like he makes clear in every video, if it is of value to YOU, buy it. He just wants to make clear we're not getting better leather, craftsmanship, etc. or anything impossible to find at other reputable, high quality companies. I've recently found the same as I've gotten into skincare and comparisons between luxury and non luxury brands. The $1K eye cream is many times not as good as the $50 eye cream because it's loaded with fragrance and chemicals to provide and 'experience' rather than actives to produce results.

another one of my problems with Tanner is that he grossly under values labor. All of your points are valid, but on top of that I sew and I'm a jeweler. $170 for labor to make a bag such as a Loewe puzzle is a pittance for a trained crafter. And that amount is supposed to include price of quality sourced materials? Ridiculous.

This, is there a astronomical, partially unwarranted, upmark up on anything designer? 100% Do I still like the aesthetic, designs, and yes - the exclusivity? 100% Depending on what you're into these designs are pretty much non existent outside of designer
Back on topic, still a lot of these debunking videos aren't being entirely honest themselves. Like if he can find hq materials, not sourced in the worst of conditions, at these prices? Pls do tell, i'd love to know!
Same goes for labour costs, as you said yourself. And that's not factouring in all other business costs.
That's why I, personally, have such a big problem with these deinfluencing type videos

Agreed! A designer bag, has the word "designer" in the name for a reason. Someone spent their time and energy to create something unique that would be appealing to others. There is a reason why these designer luxury bags are then counterfeited ad nauseam and someone like Tannerstein can get on his high horse and critique them after the fact. It's easy to say a designer bag isn't worth it, we all know that no bag is worth a $5k price tag, but the craftsmanship and innovation that come with that bag cannot be ignored, although Tannerstein definitely tries.

I’ve always watched his videos and yes I agree we are paying a marked up premium. But I’ve ALWAYS thought his estimation for labor/artisan seem so Under-value and I end up questioning myself if it’s inaccurate OR are artisans really this under-paid for the hours of labor😮

Bedo's leather channel is also another great resource. He reconstructed a completely ruined blue Birkin and did a phenomenal job! And Tanner Leatherstein has a podcast too, it's pretty informative.
Honestly, after watching their channels, I don't think I'll ever buy luxury brands like Chanel, LV and Hermes. Although I might become a "logo ho" for a Fendi baguette! 😆
But the leather is just not worth the markup, especially after price hikes and their videos prove it. I grew up horseback riding and you learn A LOT about leather that way. Their bags are not full grain leather most of the time. (Don't be fooled by "genuine leather"! Bottom of the barrel quality..) Saddleback leather and Dooney & Bourke Florentine leather are surprisingly excellent quality for the price. I have bags that are a decade old, developed a lovely patina otherwise still in almost new condition.

I’d say for the bigger brands the mark up is easily 80-90% of the price. I’m planning a trip to Florence and am looking at buying some leather bags there as that is what they are known for, but they still price at the cost of what they generally should be. (Leather + skill required), and has made me realise how crazy some of them are. Having said all that….still planning on buying a Lady Dior soon.

I've noticed that women are more often criticized for their expensive hobbies than men are. You won't see as many people saying wow what a waste of money that sportscar is! Ours are often seen as frilly and frivolous when they are "feminine". Something to think about!

Love leatherstein he also does say that he doesn't count the rent of their stores, staff/corporate costs, advertising etc.. so the mark ups aren't as crazy as they seem. These brands have really nice stores all over the world in major cities, the have corporate offices, they have advertising and do major brand deals with celebrities etc... Obviously you pay for the name but also all that other stuff.

  • @callioscope

I started to watch Tanner Leatherstein last year. The big shock to me was that I thought fine leather itself was much more expensive than it is. But, the markup does not surprise me because I know how much fine jewelry is marked up.
All luxury goods have inflated prices because the assumption is, if it costs this much, it must be better. Works for logo items as well as “quiet luxury” things. It is just human nature to want “better,” often especially if it is exclusive. That said, there is a lot more value in the design of expensive things than he gives credit for. A canvas with paint slapped on it by me as compared to one by David Hockney may have the same intrinsic value, but they are not the same.

Cassie just became ‘that woman’! Business savvy. Love this video and I thank you for researching the influencer who shared the deconstruction of the bags. That is genuine/ non biased research and what a level up moment as an influencer. Shows you have ethics for what you put out and the various aspects that goes into the cost of a product. One thing I hate about certain outlets who now use cheaper products to make outlet items and not take the previous season items that don’t sell and get them into the outlet.
    Economics 101 with Cassie!
It is beyond the physical item and it is the experience created. I.E-Disney versus other amusement parks.

A very informative video. We’re also paying for the legacy of the brand how long it’s been around as well. I guess it really just boils down to personal preference if you see it as justification for the price mark up to purchase the bag based off all of the parameters, you’ve shared here then I say go for it. I just bought my first Lambskin Chanel bag and the price was up there but I realize all of the parameters you shared was the reason why the tag on my bag was so high. But I love Chanel and I know what goes into creating a reputable house so I took the plunge and I have no regrets.

But yes, the leases to be on the best streets in the key cities mean that the flagship stores are often loss leaders. From what ive heard, the stores generally get a routine return and all the profits are maintained by the entrepreneur and IP owners (likely in low tax jurisdictions!)
From a consumer perspective, the marketing contributes to us desiring designer. I guess if that's what we like and value, then that's what we'll pay!

Great video and I agree! When people talk about markup and they do not include the full costs of doing business, they are not showing the true mark up. Rent and maintenance of premium real estate for stores is part of the cost. Paying proper salaries for everyone along the chain, from brand ambassadors to craftsman to sales to back house accounting and so on is part of the cost. Acquiring customers is also expensive, and the reality is that customers will pay more because of investing in these expenses of glamorous celebrities, fancy stores and so on.

Great video! I, too, watch Tanner Leatherstein. You provide a great perspective on what else goes into the cost. However, there is no reason why any of these designer bags should have the quality issues that seem to abound. For the price mark up, someone in the production line should spend 10-15 minutes on each bag examining every detail to insure the high quality of the bag. In the last 18 months I've had to return 2 bags because stiching was unraveling and in another leather was not aligned properly and one side of bag was shorter than the other. The front of the bag had a lopsided appearance. (Which was not the design). Because of where I live, I have to use online services for many of my luxury purposes. So I can't examine the bag in store.

I think, the mark ups and the price increases are worth it because it gives the consumer exactly what they want. A recognisable item that is not easy to get your hands on. Especially when the prestige of the item is a part of the charm. Stealth wealth is understandable when it comes to customers who are their own brand. Celebs and billionaire business people are their own claim to fame/success and are the personification of luxury items, whatever they wear you already know it’s expensive but you also want to know where it’s from. If the average Joe were to do the same they could elicit the same response but it’s not a guarantee. If you think about responses you get from your most beautiful bags it’s either “I like your bag” when it’s branded or “I like your bag, where did you get it from?” For the beautiful non logo/recognisable pieces. Either which way, as the wearer you choose the experience. As a minimalist myself while I am not an active participator in fashion BUT I am an avid consumer! I love looking at and reading about and watching videos about fashion and luxury fashion :) it’s like reading the news for me, I’m not a criminal but I am thoroughly entertained by what they are up to and love being updated and in the know :) I keep things simple with a twist, so rarely experience fatigue or boredom with my belongings and express my personality through my conversations using… my personality :) but my alter ego has an orgasm watching others play with and enjoy these things (please don’t read too deeply into that 😂) and if that’s not enough for you then yes, the price is worth it because without these prices the items loose their exclusivity and with it their prestige and wouldn’t be as entertaining even for someone like me.

Exactly - beyond the actual leather are other costs (marketing etc ) that drive the equity of these brands .
We are buying into this brand equity ;)
I for one buy luxurious goods as a treat to myself - I enjoy the feeling of spoiling myself.
Ps: fragrances (which are about 80-90% water) are very high margin also as well as a number of other products .
