Cassie hear me out: for all of these reasons is that the LV Neverfull is a solid choice to start your collection! You did it, I did it. I travel a lot for business and there is not a better tote for traveling than the neverfull. The poor thing keeps being called basic, mainstream etc but you can use it and abuse it and she stays looking great. I now have other totes, but keep gravitating to the neverfull because she gets the job done.

Sound and useful advice! There’s a fine line between aspiration and common sense. Three bits of older lady wisdom for the starting out: DON’T go into debt for anything as fleeting as a luxury handbag; invest in twillys; and always, always check out pre-loved sites. Mostly, just be happy in the journey. ❤

I have to say with the Chanel Classic Flap though that while there are comparison bags, if someone really wants the classic flap nothing else will quite hit the mark. At least that was the case for me. It was the only bag that was consistently at the top of my wish list and therefore became my first designer bag and personally I'm glad I got that itch out of the way.

    Ah! A fellow magpie! 😂
I can NOT agree more about the classic flap bag. It used to be high on my list, (opted for the gorgeous versatile slightly more youthful 19 instead as my first Chanel bag), but I have seen the classic flap essentially double in price for no other reason but ✨exclusivity✨ which to me, for as timeless and classic as Chanel is, the quality does not justify that price tag. So she’s no longer high on the list for me. There are far too many other wonderful bags that I’d be passing up in the meantime whilst saving for something that continues to go up in price.

    • @CassieThorpe
      @CassieThorpe  ปีที่แล้ว +6

After using all the classics from most of the big designers including Hermes, going back ..and being practical and user friendly not trendy..I would still buy a 1. Chanel classic Flap 2. LV Alma BB in Épi 3. LV Speedy or Neverful for travelling . 4. Céline Luggage for everyday/ Mulberry mini Bayswater alternative 4. Any camera bag for ease of use. Some of my favourite bags Celine 16, ferragamo top handles

For those who absolutely adore the Lady Dior, it was my 3rd bag. Mine was a beaded calfskin, and it's been wearing quite well over 2 years! Feel free to go for it if the calfskin's what you love

My first designer bags were Fendi, Gucci and Chanel. This was a long time ago so the price at that time was much more affordable. Chanel classic flap price is just too high now. I'm thankful I have been collecting the classic flap for several years now. Also my first designer bags are in great shape, they were made so much better before.

Love the nails today!🥰 Agree with the Hermes point! I cannot fathom getting use out of a 10k+ bag as my first and only bag. Had so many people tell me the Dior Saddle would not fit as a first bag and I still went ahead with it, ended up regretting and letting it go 💀 so designer buying is 100% an emotional choice

I agree. Bought a pre-loved Chanel bag. It was older, but in great condition and was the chocolate brown I wanted and it even came with a “wallet”. However, once I began to use it, I realized I would need to carry it around like a running back, tucked under and in the crook of my arm. I couldn’t stand it. Realized then, I don’t like shoulder or cross-body bags. I gave it to my 18 yo granddaughter, who squealed with delight. So, Cassie, you have hit the nail on the head as to whether a bag is right for you. Keep it up girl!

My first designer bag was a LV speedy. It’s a classic so I wasn’t worried about it being too trendy or limited edition and therefore irreplaceable. The canvas is so durable and it wasn’t too expensive so it got me comfortable with carrying a designer bag before I took the plunge into more expensive leather designer bags

I’m glad I got a Chanel boy as my first luxury bag before that “goal post” got any further away! I love it so much and I don’t like the classic flap except the minis :3 and ugh the raw textile handles on the Dior book tote…I can’t deal with them. Love your blue Chanel bag!!

As basic as people say it is my first luxury bag was an LV Speedy 25 in Damier ebene. I think it’s the ultimate bag. Hard wearing, versatile, matches so many outfits if you wear neutrals. I recommend it over and over again.

Totally agree with your list. My first bag was an Alma BB in Damier Ebene. It is durable, has a top handle and a strap, fits a lot for its size and has feet. The color suits my clothes just perfect. My second one was the Neverfull MM. So i had everything covered :D I still have them and use them a lot, even with a bigger collection now. They maybe flashy for some people, but the canvas is very hard wearing. I think the Prada re-edition would be a great first bag, too. Afortable, durable and versatile.

LV canvas it’s always the best way to start. As basic as it is. Those banks are like tanks in a good way, the LV canvas bags are bags that you can get them through the ringer and will stay in great shape

I got the prada Crystal reedition bag as my first and only designer handbag. She makes me feel like a queen When I wear her on my arm. In i fell head over heels in love with her blingliyness, when you unboxed her on your channel. She’s not practical or an everyday bag but I love her an she sparkles in my bookshelf on top of the crystal loafers that I of coarse “ had to get” to match the bag with… no regrets what so ever they bring me joy everyday, even just to look at

My first bag is a Vintage Chanel Classic flap in Beige lambskin. It was really the only bag in my wishlist at the time lol but I’m so glad I went for it, considering all the price increases. I personally don’t baby it and have gotten a lot of use out of it❤

I definitely agree with everything on this list! Miss Cassie just knows everything. I have the dior medium book tote in the reverse toile de jouy colorway and I can strongly say that it SHOULD NOT be part of your starting collection just because of how delicate you gotta take care of it, especially if it is a light color. I definitely and highly recommend getting 2 twills for the handles as some form of "insurance" for the handles, but even then, it's like ya gotta do the most (especially when you know dang well you do the most lol).
But yes! Buying designer is a commitment and if anything, people should hold off for at least 3 month, unless they cannot get it out of their head or are consistently thinking about. As someone who works in A REHAB with addicts...🤪, it generally takes 90 days or even more to break a habit. If you're thinking about that handbag for over 3 months, try it on, and goes with you/your personality/style, I would say GO FOR IT!

One of the best bags I’ve had is the ysl toy Lou Lou bag. It fits just enough for day to day essentials. The leather has barely worn and cost per use has been insane. Very low maintenance in the black leather. Highly recommend!

Great advice, Cassie to those just starting out with high-end bags. For those of us who have a collection dating back years/decades, then it's a different situation with selecting bags as we can choose about anything that strikes our liking and make it work. But, we have a lot of other bags to fall back on in our more regularly-used collection.
As for tote bags, my number one (non high-end) bag is the leather Kurt Geiger, Violet-model tote bag that comes in a variety of colors of which I have in ten different colors. I use it nearly daily, along with a cool, small high-end crossbody bag to hold my keys and a few other items that I need to access quickly. That tote works like a dream and then I can have a selection of tiny crossbody bags as I know that all of my primary bag belongings will go into the tote bag . And that Kurt Geiger tote fits very comfortably on the shoulder.
The other tote bag that I love is my light-blue denim Celine (Cabas Thais) tote. It looks really classy and goes great with all of the denim looks in clothing.
As for my first high-end bag, it was in the summer of 1980 in Paris when I went into the Maison de Louis Vuitton on the Avenue Marceau and purchased the monogram Chantilly crossbody bag. It worked for me at that point of my life. Plus, LV monogram is nearly indestructible. I bought LV, in both monogram and epic, for a good decade and a half or longer. I also had my Chanel, but bought in Paris at the flagship Chanel boutique in the early 80s at about one-eighth the price of today's inflated Chanel prices.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

Tbh I’ve never ever regretted a statement bag purchase, I question myself more in retrospect on the more basic/classic bags lol when I look back on my LE’s and seasonal pieces that were harder to come by they give me joy and I never tire of them. They’re memory creators, outfit makers, and the best expression of my personal taste and personality. So if I went back in time i’d go for all the blingiest 😂
Plus, if I’m going be spending that much I’m the type of person who wants the farthest possible feeling that I’ve acquired something that “everyone” has. I want a piece of art or a piece of history.
I agree too that the Fendi baguette is the most timeless universal bag, it’s a blank canvas and there’s a version for everyone.

If you're looking for good quality leather and want something more affordable highly recommend Polene and Pinko both very different styles but the quality on them is great and most of the bags are under $500. Was a perfect 1st bag for me to get used to carrying and caring for leather.

  • @amym5373

You are so right about not knowing what will work, and how to care for your first designer bag! My first was a Dior open bar bag tote- way to big and heavy- but she was so hard wearing and amazing quality. My second was a YSL medium envelope bag- again the leather was amazing and hard wearing- but I still managed to bang her up! Learned how to treat and wear my bags properly- and I have finally graduated to be able to use my new small Chanel Coco handle in caviar as my everyday bag! So far so good! Where practicality and the heart meet is the the sweet spot to shoot for! I recommend a crossbody with a top handle option in a hardwearing leather or canvas as a first bag. LV pochette Métis or YSL college bag.

Happy Friday Cassie. U are soooo right. Buying those bags first thing starting your collection. I know I would be afraid to wear her. Worrying about scratches, color transfer, & if it gets wet or scuffed up. I would get other bags & wait on those even if it's the 5th or 6th. I take my bags serious. I have a bag now that got scuffed up when I fell years back. It is repairable due to the type of leather. As always Cassie u are just wonderful bringing the info. Hope your Thanksgiving was superb. Love your nail color. Have a blessed day. 🌹🌹🌹.

You are so cute and animated! Love your personality and your take on handbags 😘😘
I agree with the Chanel flap bag. My husband bought mine a few years ago and I do use it often enough, it's just more of a sentimental piece than anything else. It's hard to justify the current prices and the long queue to get into any Chanel store.

My first luxury handbag was the Alma BB in Damier Ebene. I highly recommend, it is extremely durable, classic and decently well priced. Now that my collection has grown, my most used bag is the LV pochette accessoires in black patent epi leather, other most used bags are my mini backpack from MCM and prada mini similar to the pochette accessoires in Aqua leather.
Side Note as an Aussie: Magpies are aggressive af and will attack you if you walk too close to their tree. LOL

Thats a brilliant choice - LV canvas is so hard wearing its amazing. My first two designer bags were LV 🙌🏽

I love this video, and I agree!
My first designer bag was a Chanel classic clap - I don’t ever reach for it but I can’t bring myself to sell it!
Recently got an LV speedy in the world tour version. It’s loud, it’s in your face and I use it everyday. In fact I used another bag yesterday and there I was missing my speedy 😂❤

I was listening with headphones, cracking up, and my husband made me turn on the sound. His exact words were “THANK GOD SHE’S GOING TO INFLUENCE YOU NOT TO SLEND MORE MONEY.” My response,” she said first bag darling. I’ve already got more than a first bag 😜”

Thank you Cassie for the suggestions as usual. Based on one of your videos I've saved money to celebrate my start in my career and I was considering a Fendi by the way bag as the neutral colors and leather speak to me.

Agreed! A lot of these I wouldn't buy in any case - but thats just my personal taste 😉 First 'sweaty palm when paying' bag was the Alma BB in DE. A versatile and hardy lady....mine still looks as good as new after years of being dragged around. Deffo recomend. Also think the Chanel WoC in caviar is a great first 'bag' for similar reasons - and with a base shaper she fits a surprising amount.

I agree, as a first bag you need a versatile workhorse that suits your lifestyle. Other thing to consider is where you live. City? Seaside? Different vibes. If there are a lot of pick pockets you’ll need something with a zipper closure. Do you take the metro a lot, is there a risk for someone stealing your bag? Then opt for something with minimal logo/ branding or an obscure brand that’s not well known. If you need a bag that transitions through seasons opt for a light colored or brown leather. For me the bag that ticked all the boxes was Mulberry Bayswater ❤

My first luxury handbag was the medium classic Chanel bag. BUT I bought back when it was in the $3000 range. I agree with you about the bag fitting everyone's first needs (Sturdy, classic, versatile, etc) but damn that cost. I don't think I would pay...actually I KNOW I won't pay the current price for the classic. Its crazy ridiculous pricing for the quality! But I have worn my medium to death in all sorts of scenario. If you have the money, you won't regret it :)

I got a pochette Métis in empreinte as my first bag and I’m so happy with it. It’s understated enough that it’s really versatile and the empreinte is hard wearing, not too precious. I would never have used a classic flap if it was my first bag!

    • @lesleyo19

i wouldn’t go directly to Birkin or Kelly… but to the Herbag, which is more cheap and easy to get. then would use her like a Kelly and open like a birkin… to see which of both styles would fit me better to be my second one! The Herbag would give me history purchase to get a B or K.

Soo agree with the hermes points!! Bags are soo difficult to judge until you get it home & see how it works. Ive spent months thinking about certain bags, adamant I’ll use them all the time, got them & only used a couple of time. Ive impulse brought others & they’ve been the best bags ever. I think as long as you have that lbb ‘little black bag’ with whatever hardware suits you you cant go wrong as a first bag. Go small if its for going out. Go big if you want it for work & you wanna get a laptop in it. The bag I use the most is my black vintage fendi baguette. Its perfect for almost everything!

Hi Cassie. I agree with you on hermes and chanel bags as first purchase bags. Quite expensive and one may be intimidated not to ever use them. So why investment so much on a first purchase when you are limited with its use. This was a great comparative video. Have a splendid weekend ahead😊

Cassie dear you are so practical! I have come to think practicality and loving luxury don’t go hand in hand in my case. In fact I think all those bags ( bar the Chanel classic flap) are so IT for me. Oh well, they’re all in my collection and were probably somewhere around second third fourth bag 😂
But I am happy to say I am still waiting for my Mini-Kelly although that situation is not due to me being cautious but bc I am still on the list and haven’t been made an offer yet 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Your Marine Serre in blue gets me every time! I which they would do it again in this color line. Works better than the browns, whites, Cremes and reds imho.

Oh the re editions are so gorgeous!! I have two in the crystal and I love them and use them all the time I feel like they are the perfect blend of sport and sparkle for everyday ✨ but my first major purchase was a longggg time ago and it was a LV coated canvas (Murakami ☺️💖) that has held up really well for being nearly 20 years old.

  • @CocoLainey
    @CocoLainey ปีที่แล้ว +1

💯 agree! I started collecting when I was 25 (2007) & my first bag was the Marc Jacobs Stam Bag - it was peak ‘It Bag’ season & every year after! As I live in Australia, it was super hard to get pieces as the fashion brands were only available in certain states/stores so would have to fly to Sydney to buy & it was really a situation of buy now or never see it again! 😆 So I was very much Carrie Bradshaw ‘Labels before Love’ situation 🤣 but I look at the prices of my pieces from back then to now Eg. Chanel Mini Classic Flap AUD$1360.50 to now AUD$6680+ & although there were times I ate baked beans on toast - it was worth it!!! 😍

If you buy a first LV bag buy canvas. If you buy a second one etc… buy leather. Canvas is cheap(ish) and will get attention but the leather bags lasts forever and can be refurbished by LV or a good cobbler. Kelly/Birkins aren’t user friendly. They’re arm bags. They don’t close easily. They’re kinda large. If you get a mini, they aren’t practical. Have a few Chanel bags that I had to have in my younger years BUT I never carry them anymore because they have a “look” and I don’t find that now that I’m older, the jeans, t-shirt, Chanel, look works anymore. So be aware that as you age…bags designed for “ladies who lunch” will scream “50yr old!” you when you want to look fresh, fab and 40.

    • @katemiller7874

I think the best option for a first luxury bag is a pre-loved one that is cheaper. I found mine and now I know I want more after saving some money 😉 The first investment could be hurting when you're not sure of the quality so vintage market is a great place for starting your collection 🤩

What great advise lovely Cassie. You hit the nail on the head with all these bags. Definitely not first bags in your collection. Chanel is just getting ridiculous in price. Here the medium CF is getting up near AUD $15k. Just not worth the price even for your say 5th bag. Just not made like they used to be and not worth that money ever. Much love to you, Nii and your wonderful parents. Jenni from Australia. XXXX

Sometimes I wish I’d just bitten the bullet and purchased a Chanel Jumbo first. I’ve spent so much money trying to buy comparable styles, but the reality is that I still want it. Now that the price is where it is, I’m over the thought of getting it brand new at boutique. Not a fan of the preloved prices either. I really think people should go in and try bags on because what you thought would be a good fit for you could turn out to be a regretted purchase. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This made me laugh as my first was the Prada Crystal re edition in lilac, still my only proper luxury bag. No regrets though as I don’t think I’ll have a large collection. My next will hopefully be the Fendi baguette sequins. I think I just love sparkle too much 😂
