We've used your easy and informative videos for the best part of a year now, after being let down by a plasterer last minute on one of our refurb properties. Continued to use on another 3, saving £'s. Speedskim is invaluable and our standard gets better everytime, except for wet corners ;-)...much appreciated and keep up the good work.
Thank you for the videos Blaine. I am a long time viewer. I am going to give plastering a go in the new home theatre I am building. There will be a mix of solid plaster where I remove dot and dab and possibly tape and joint the ceiling. It is all going to be hidden behind fabric so it is a good opportunity to learn without having to redo it (hopefully).
Just a little point of view for the beginners, sound and fire boards pull in faster than standard plaster boards, and it helps if they are tapered edge boards fill out before you start to apply. Great video as always 👍
I used to be a plasterer/taper 25 years ago and things have moved on. In respect of the edge beads I used to trim the setting back a bit on the first coat. Helps stop the build up of plaster on the edges. Used to use Ragni/Marshalltown
I'm a jack of all trades, have done loads of plastering over the years, and mainly onto plasterboard, which I find fairly straight forward and get a top finish. Where I do struggle, though, is hardwall/bonding onto an uneven wall. I struggle to get that stuff flat, and for some reason, I struggle when skimming on top of it! Why? I'm hoping you can tell me! Thanks for the content. It genuinely helps!
I'm a Plaster, Applying hardwall/bonding takes a lot of practice and skill to obtain a good/flat surface, one tip would be to apply the finish coat plaster just before the hardwall/bonding has completely set, that way the finish coat won't dry too fast, another tip is to apply two coats of PVA (preferably water proof PVA) to the hardwall/bonding, this will help kill the suction and in turn give more time for the finish coat to be worked smooth.
I've been plastering for 30 years. Always laid in, the top half then bottom half, then trowelled horizontally with a watered paint brush. Not used any fancy gadgets, not even a twitcher or those long things. But the last 12 years I've only plastered weekends to help people out. £100 for the day, I'd come and skim for family n friends or workmates that are moving in n out. Interesting technique.
Good vid, what I also recommend is be patient and not bite off too much than you can chew to begin with, I think that's the first mistake beginners make. So what if it takes you a bit longer, but you will get a better quality job, speed comes with experience, and you won't have to redo rushed work or tried doing too many surfaces and allow one surface to go off to much that you may need to apply a third coat. Take your time, and dint make your plaster too thick, give yourself a little time to play with it
wish i had that speedskim when i did plastering . but yeah keep ahead all the time cos if that plaster goes off before your ready u will be chasing your tail the rest of the day . tools clean , buckets clean as u go . if your well prepared u got time to keep everything clean as you go . i really miss doing this job but in my day its taking its toll on me and my back is knackered from carrying 50 kilo bags etc and plasterers hod which nobody mentions is about 4 times bigger than a brickys hod and holds about 4 shovel fulls of mix and weighs about same as bag of cement
Thanks for providing these videos. This trade is vanishing here in the Banana republic of USA. Can you offer any help in finding a way to reproduce this type of knockdown plastered ceiling? (I included a link for you to view on this). I cannot get this textured look. However even though I am a beginner I have done this before using drywall mud with Silica sand in it. This will never give you that plaster textured hard look ever. So I need to find a good plaster mix I can put over painted drywall as well as a textured sponge or stomper to do it with. Can you recommend what type of plaster I can use to do this with as well as trowels and sponge towels I should have? For me, this is the best way to put a quality look on ordinary drywall walls and ceilings. I just have to make sure I am using the proper plaster mix product. Alot of what we have here can be d found in stores like Lowe's, but I have also bought aged lime mix in 5 gal buckets used for reproducing historically correct plaster wall and ceiling renovations. It was called Master of Plaster(I added Silica sand as well).Too expensive. Need something like it but cheaper. I am including a video of this textured look I am trying to duplicate with plaster, not drywall mud. The guy is not responding to what he used or how he made it. Hopefully you can help as this look is very popular here, but I would only want it done with a plaster coat. Can you help me out? This is video of the look I am trying to get but not successful. yep definately hard . i did it for years 30 years ago , just holding that hawk full of plaster all day is hard work and gets heavier and heavier as the day goes on .plus when u put the plaster on the wall you do have to apply pressure so hard work on ur right hand as well
How about another tip, advice maybe. What happened to me (beginner) is that after 2 or 3 mixes the plaster in the bucket became pretty hard after couple minutes. Freshly opened bag.

everyone that watches thinks it looks easy untill you give them a try . top coat plaster work not too bad but sand and cement work is different game .. its hard work . ive had my hand cramp up on me near end of the day doing sand and cement and couldnt let go of the trowel , had to prise my fingers off the trowel . its also hard work holding the weight of the hawk fully loaded, fine at start of the day but it seems to get heavier at end of the day . best job i had but hard work , but if quick u can make some money
Hey Blaine another great video. As a new subscribe to your Beginners Plastering, would a lime finish (just lime mixed in water) work instead of the Thistle Multi you are using? I cannot find that to buy here in USA. Would I need to put any gauging in the mix? This is hard to find correct finish to use here although Diamond finish and Imperial can be bought. Also do you have any suggestions for a base coat I can use over painted drywall? Would Structolite work here in place of Thistle base coat? Again, most all work would be over already installed drywall that has been painted and finished.
How come you are painting after 6 days the fresh plaster? I think on all paints / plaster guides it says wait 4 - 6 weeks before painting. And the first coat should be a 50/50 mixture of emulsion paint and water. Is that wrong or?
i forgot to cut the holes for down lights last week and feed the cable through. lol. spotted it before i started mixing luckily. but yeah, cant even get the basics right some days.
2nd coat wish I could train my misses to do a mix. Another ti is if your doing old walls guys make sure you put x3 coats of pva on. As this stop your plaster drying out to quick.

Hi there, If anyone could answer this question I would be truly grateful. I have recently had a plasterer come to my property. When they plastered it left loads of blisters/bubbles all over the walls and the same has happened to a ceiling in another room. I have had 3 people up and apparently they have never seen nothing like this before. So what they have decided to do now is to cover a solid wall with plaster board and plaster over that but the have left a gap between the solid wall and the plaster board. I don’t understand why they have not put it directly against the wall. I believe that the property did have mould and I don’t believe this is right. Can anyone give me some advice? Won’t that gap cause a problem?

Always scrim the bead wing to the plastrbisrd, stops cracking on the bead, especially when the bead gets knocked
