Hey, great video! What's the time between having applied the first coat and flattening it the first time? Also, should you wait for the first coat to dry up before adding the second coat?
First coat flattening u can do straight away after u apply and for the 2nd coat feel your 1st coat and if it’s sticky to the touch then u can start applying your 2nd coat
Great video, I had a go at plastering for first time today after watching your videos all week, messed up on my mixes but did turn out not to bad :) so thanks your channel helps

Due you apply anything to the plaster board before you start, and what type of plaster would you use for a beginner for first and second coats, also what would you tape , fill any gaps before plastering, thank you Mike
Many thanks for this demonstration, really useful! Do you know what the timings are between each stage? I know some timing are based on the temperature and humidity but on average how do I know the plaster is right to move to the next stage? Keep up the great work!
Just like u not much experienced on that but as a good timing for me I check how hard the first coat is so if is too wet I’ll give it a more time but the problem is on summer where u must be quick otherwise will be in trouble to get it flat…
Hi i have try plastering with Thistle Hardwall Undercoat Plaster on plasterboard, but i find that it dry to quick within about 10 min. I have also try loosing the mixture but it doesn't help. Is there any tips you can give me to keep the plaster from drying too quick. Thank you
When I learned to plaster it was just marshalltown trowels for the job. I've bought myself a spat and a plaziflex to have a play with next time I have to do some skimming.
Hi all I love watching this guy, he’s helped me a lot….manages to dumb it down, even for me 😁 I have a question….I have watched plasterers, & Mr Gray here. When applying your plaster, or flattening off, I notice you sweep back & too with your trowel. Do you lift off, when coming back, or just tilt the trowel? I have tried tilting, & I end up getting stuck to the wall…maybe it’s just my technique, so I lift off, & things don’t seem to flow nicely. Thanks in advance
Thank you mate! Really appreciate that. It's easier if you lift the trowel off if you're starting out. It's quite hard to work up and down in one motion so just lift the trowel from the wall for now...it's a lot easier that way! Hope this helps and thank you for watching.
Can someone tell me the tme frame of each of the steps. 1st coat how long before the second goes on? How long to you wait before the stages of troweling and flattering etc?
Hi there, I am wondering what types of plaster do you use for your first coats and second. Looking at doing it myself but im still not seeing much about actual first coat mixes. Great content by the way. Cheers
It's muilti-finish and he's applying 2 coats of. May have used some thistle bonding at the start if the wall was out. But it's the same plaster. Different mix.
@@PlasteringForBeginners hi 👋 Thanks for getting in touch Blaine, i really enjoy your content. Very helpful videos indeed, may i ask if its two coats of multi finish. What do you use for the base as in doing the joins to plasterboard and screw holes? Iv watched most of your video's and i will get through the rest im sure. Thanks again 👍
Remove any loose paint and plaster or wallpaper from the walls. Fill any large voids with bonding and then prime the walls with watered-down PVA before applying the multi finish.
Fantastic video as always! Love watching them and a great top up with the blueprint as your guide. Quick question through; how do the timings look when adding in the speedskim, as the blueprint doesn’t include the use of it? Thanks again!

Hi mate, I’m 16 and looking to get into plastering and i am just wondering what you think the best way to get into the trade as I don’t know any plasterers first hand.
Great videos you do,thank you. A couple of questions, firstly I've never done plastering before but really want to learn. I have old walls that imo will need bonding first. Has the bonding got to completely dry before I put the first coat of plaster on. Secondly how long do you have to wait before I start the second coat. Many thanks.
Bonding needs to be dry before applying the finishing plaster. Wait around 20min between coats of multi finish. Just enough time to clean off the tools and mix up a new batch of plaster.
Thanks for these videos, really helpful. I'm about to try plastering a room for the time. I've got some bags of multi finish plaster but the date in them is about 2 weeks ago. Will they still be ok to use??
@@PlasteringForBeginners yeah loads, thanks Blaine. You make that all look effortless and although I guessed a fair bit of pressure would be needed. It all helps. mate, ta!
Hi a couple of Q's - why did you you mix a fresh batch for the second coat - was it because it was going off in the bucket or because you had used it all or most of it? Also how important is the trowel - I have an old clean steel plastering trowel and aluminium hawk - is it going to matter that much if it isn't the latest and greatest trowel in the shop? Thanks great content.
(1) You only have a small amount of time to work with the plaster before it goes off. So it's important to mix a new batch of plaster for each coat. (2) The trowel and hawk always depends on the plasterer. If you find the trowel comfortable to use then you shouldn't have a problem. The only difference between cheap and expensive trowels is how long they last. If you're a DIYer then there's no need to buy the most expensive tools in the shop.
Two things - 1. What trowel you using for putting one ( 1st 2 coats ) 2. What is the best light you use. Used a few in my time some crap some good. Great video pal

Good video blain you just need to go into trowel angles at different stages more, when you should open your trowel and how far away from the wall it should be
If I had to plaster over an internal wall and the base is sand and cement what would be your suggestion? Should I first use a bonding plaster and then the multi finish?
No...just 2 coats of PVA! No Bonding. Just use Multi Finish plaster - it's designed to be used on all backgrounds so it'll be fine. Hope this helps pal.
@@PlasteringForBeginners Many many thanks! Should the PVA be 3:1? I guess I have to wait for the first to try entirely, then put the second, wait for it to be tacky and then go with multi finish 2 coats?
