    Today, Steam launched Steam Families.
    The new system gets rid of limits on how many people can play games from one library, makes buying games for your kids easier, and adds new parental controls and sharing options.
    Before, you needed to use two different systems - Family Sharing and Family View - if you wanted to share your library but limit which games your kids could play.
    Also under the old approach, only one person at a time could play a game from another’s library. Now - to use Steam’s example - if you’re playing your copy of Portal 2 and someone else wants to play Half-Life from your library, that’s fine. They’ll only be booted if you start up Portal 2 while they’re playing it from your library.
    You’ll need to be in the beta program to try it, which you can do by visiting Settings Interface Client Beta Participation and selecting “Steam Family Beta.” Then, to create a family, go to the Store page, click your account, then Account details Family Management Create a Family.
    Accounts can share a library with five other family members, just as before, but there’s no mention of limits to the number of devices you can authorize. (It was capped at 10 before.)
    Offline play is supported now, too, whereas the previous sharing scheme required you to be online to play games from someone else’s library.
    A note of caution, though: the new system is region-locked, so if you’ve been sharing with someone in another country, you might not be able to continue doing so. And if someone leaves your family, they can’t join or start another one for a full year.
    Steam says developers have to approve their titles for family sharing, while others, like free-to-play games or those requiring third-party keys, accounts, or subscriptions, can’t be shared.

    Pretty sure the family sharing limitation and the 1 year block is to prevent 100s of accounts with 1 game (like the blackhat ones sold in RU) from becoming massive networks of account sharing/piracy. Not even factoring in like stolen CCs for those accounts, in some regions its actually cheaper to buy 1 game an acc and sell the acc to someone in the middle east etc. This is probably why this feature is also region locked rn.

  • @PyroTech03
    @PyroTech03 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yea the use case of you using your steam deck and pc at same time is a protection factor to keep everyone from just using same account.
    And the device limit looks like it's gone now as there's nowhere to manage devices anymore.
    And the year thing is just to prevent family hopping. So you use family as it's intended.

    Combine our resources? We're not doing that, my man. My fiancee and I buy enough games as it is. My plate is so damn full, I'm going to need a dinner tray to hold all the games we bought but haven't played yet. We play everything across all platforms and genres of gaming. From all current consoles (Series X, PS5, and Switch) PC gaming and Steam Deck, we love it all.
    We just jumped in the Steam Deck playing field, and we both love it. It is the first console that I didn't pick up on day one since...2001 with the GameCube. You can bet I will be there on day one for the Steam Deck 2. I'm still blown away that you can play freaking Series X and PS5 games on our Steam Deck. I played Rise of The Ronin (brand new PS5 exclusive) on our Deck all last night, and it ran flawlessly. Now, I'm wondering if I can force the PS5 to play Ronin @60FPS on Fidelity Mode? The Steam Deck allowed me to force it into 60FPS while on Fidelity Mode, but I stupidly didn't look at the 4K TV when I did it. I'm trying it tonight.

      My suggestion stop buying Steam games because you do not own them you can not download them to storage that you own. GOG is the only game store that lets you down load all your games to your own storage device. You want to run GOG on a steam deck run Linux and Heroic games Launcher.
      The problem is most people thing Steam is great they are a walled garden just like Apple Epic Microsoft EA and so on. Give you money to GOG no DRM and you own what you pay for. If the game you want does not come to GOG is this a game you really want a game that you will never own.
      GOG does not stop you from playing the game on as many devices as you won. I play the same game on my Gaming PC my TV PC and a laptop. Same game purchased once. Just do not use GOG Galaxy just download the game and install. Not of fan of most game Launchers, but I do love Heroic games Launcher on Linux works great
      This is my personal opinion.

    Would be interesting if Steam integrated an OPT-IN for Devs to let people play 2 instances of the same game for multiplayer purposes. Think; With split-screen being all but gone in modern games it would be cool to see Devs offer that same kind of experience through family-sharing. Games can market on that while also preventing players from garnering in-game stats to prevent the overuse of the feature.

    I am a great fan of Steam Decks and now have both the LCD and OLED models, but recent ASUS ROG Ally discounts (as low £529.00 in the UK for a new Z1 Extreme model) is seriously tempting me to buy one and play some of the games in my Steam library that need a little more performance than the Steam Deck has to offer to play well. When venders such as ASUS and Lenovo start to heavily discount, it is usually an indication that they are trying to shift stock ahead of releasing a new model, so perhaps an ASUS ROG Ally 2 will be with us in the next couple of months. Using a Windows gaming handheld is like running the Steam Deck permanently in desk top mode, but there are software tools and configuration changes that improve the experience, which I discovered when I first got into Windows handheld gaming almost five years ago with my GPD Win 2. But Steam Deck gaming mode is still the best handheld gaming experience so far.

    can the deck (at least the oled) emulate the ps3/switch/dreamcast well and or also play blizzard games like wow or d3 or d4? bc that seems like the biggest reason to buy an rog ally or lenova etc.
    (ease of use too for emulating those, some installs are easier or harder than others)

    • @alanMdC
      @alanMdC หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Even the LCD Deck can flawlessly emulate Switch, Dreamcast, Wii, Wii U, GameCube, etc. Depending on the game, even with boosted resolutions. I emulate these since day 1 of unpacking my Deck.
      I haven't tested PS3 emulation, but X360 emulation (same generation and direct competitor) works very very well.
      Never played WoW ever, but saw several videos of people playing on Deck without a problem. Also plenty of mods available to make the game plays like native using the deck controllers, without needing much mouse/trackpad movement.
      Have played D3 and D4 and they both run at high/ultra no problem.

    • @alanMdC
      @alanMdC หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's also a Linux Flatpack called EmuDeck which installs and optimally configures every emulator that you choose in a matter of a couple minutes. So zero hassle to install and configure any emulation software (apart from Citra and Yuzu currently, because of Nintendo). Just a couple of clicks here and there and you're all set.

    Just to clarify your region locking and 'changing a family' points you made from 4:30. The region locking is in place as Family Sharing is designed for households. The 1 year wait to join a new family is counted from joining the previous family group, not leaving the previous family group. Which means you could technically join a new family straight from leaving a previous one, but this will reset the one year timer from that point. As you said, both of those rules are in place to prevent abuse of the system.

    5:06 the issue is not server overload, but that the games business model arent based on an unlimited number of people playing an game with a single purchase, companies chose how much they will charge based on how many copies they plan to sell, if most people chose to borrow games to friends instead of their friends purchasing the same game that can affect sales and companies will nave no option but to raise the prices, reduce their margins or in some cases go bankrupt.
    valve may not care about that, gamers may not care about that, but if thirdy party developers arent happy with steam they might pull then to put on other stores like epic, so valve have to make some comprossides that benefit developers rather than users.

TY!

    The new family stuff is cool, but it's just stuff you'd be able to do with traditional physical copies that they should've been allowing the whole time. You can lend your disc/cartridge to your friend to play in their own system, but two people can't play at the same time (without making a copy). The fact that you still can't sell your Steam games is annoying. Yes there's the refund system, but sometimes you go over that 2 hour or 2 week limit or whatever without really even getting into the game and then you're just kinda stuck with some game you don't like (maybe you left it open, maybe you idled for cards which put you over the minimum in all your games, maybe you just wanted to take more than 2 hours to tell if you really liked it). If these were physical games, you could go sell that game on eBay, but with Steam you're at the mercy of Valve to let you refund it or not, and in a best-case scenario you'll get what you paid for it back, often meaning the price of the game on-sale, whereas if you had bought a physical game on sale at GameStop or WalMart, you could sell it for more on eBay than you paid for it. It could help fund you getting more games that you might actually like. These are the things they're taking from us with the push to digital-only.
    The owner of the game getting banned if the person borrowing it gets banned *plus* the fact that if multiple people in the family have the game you can't pick which person you're borrowing from is pretty nasty, especially combined. If you have some young kids or irresponsible people linked to you, it's like you're gambling on someone getting banned. They could ban the person who was actually playing instead, maybe even not let them borrow that game from other people anymore. As it is it sounds like you could borrow a game, get banned in that game, screwing over the owner, then go buy the game yourself and play as if you'd never been banned...
    I definitely think we should signal to Valve that we like and appreciate these improvements, but it also feels like some people are overly enthusiastic when it's like we're slaves getting a bit more time outside the dog house. We're simplying getting closer to what should've been the minimum. And that's not even getting into the fact that there's no reason for the physical problem of scarcity to be replicated with digital goods when we could all have infinite copies of digital goods without the original being harmed or removed.
    With the ability to move copies of games around, it would also be nice if people could have multiple copies of games. I have two physical copies of Splatoon 3 for Switch, so if a friend brings their Switch over I could let them use my extra cartridge and we could play together. This use-case is kinda missing even with the new Family features. This would be especially cool for LAN party settings where someone who regularly hosts could have several copies of a multiplayer game. The 1 year delay on changing families kinda gets in the way of that use-case as well. Realistically you could circulate a cracked copy for LAN play with some friends, but it'd be neat to have a more legitimate route as well.

    I don't think the SteamOS will ever come out, Valve can tailor the OS and the proton libraries to the fixed Deck hardware like a console, the moment you introduce an infinite amount of hardware combinations, more compatibility problems will surface and people will go crazy on Valve, it's an uphill battle for them. Another point is, what will they do with distribution? Will they charge for a system that Linux enthusiasts can download for free, just because the can update the system and make you "safer" like Windows? If they release it for free, suddenly every portable PC is a Steam Deck now. This is also a point I make for the Xbox Portable, Microsoft would never make Windows lighter when they can just make their own portable run the Xbox OS, they already have the Series S hardware, which is very small, they could make it even smaller.
    I would love to be wrong about SteamOS, but that is dangerous for the Steam Deck itself and Valve knows it

    That isn't why Final Fantasy Rebirth isn't selling. It's not selling as well because they didn't give people what they wanted. They promised a remake not a convoluted sequel, and the end of Remake said it'd basically be whatever they felt like making now. I personally want nothing to do with that.
    Also IMO, Remake was so stretched out to make one small part a 'full game' that I was sick of playing it and its fetch quests by the end, so even if it did stick to the original story, I didn't want any more of that.
