- m0a.com When is the last time you actually dusted off the ole' manual e6b? In this technology driven world I bet it's been awhile. I strongly believe it's important to have a strong manual e6b skill set to fall back on during your training and beyond
I need an E6B that size just so I can see the numbers!

Get yourself the "circular" E6-B from Sporty's. They came in 3" and 6" models (apparently they don't make the 3" anymore). I had the 3" but couldn't see the numbers so I got the 6". Much better and the 'circular' E6-B does not have the annoying slide card. Just flip it over and all your wind calculating can be done by spinning disks.
You'd have to re-calculate W&B if you brought that in your flight bag.

The best thing about E6B is that it never runs out of battery, it doesn't hang and it never loses GPS signal.

Dont forget that when you are actually using this in flight, and not for just the question, Met wind is in magnetic so you gotta take variation in account before plotting your true winds.

I was calculating based on geometry & vectors to exact value. But, E6B makes easier to get value faster once I learned how to use it. He speaks clearly especially on numbers, which helps me to follow.

I'm a slide rule (and mechanical calculating machines) collector from germany (with a bit of fascination of aviation too) and I came to an E6B and asked myself "how does this freaking cool thingy work?" Now I know the basics, thank you for this, I'll calculate some routes now, just for fun. I hope I'll do my license some day, bit expensive here in good ol' germany, so I guess Gyrocopter would be a dream. It's a bit cheaper and I love Autogyros.
not a pilot, have only been on one commercial flight, but these slide rules fascinate me (I'm a bit simple too ha) I can just imagine the people who worked this system out toiling for hours and the absolute joy they must have felt when they got it all right, able to put so many skills in the hands of the laymen in one simple compact device.
must have been quite the instrument in its day.
I got this actual question in Sporty's Study Buddy, and got it wrong because I guessed I haven't done calculations yet! but I aim to take my written this Feb so I better brush up! :)

I will definitely try the example question worked on the vid, i am still in my early phase of the PPL some of the theory speaks about the flight computer..........I have one and I have not used it as yet...........this clip makes the type of career I chose to be very interesting I really cannot wait to become a fully fledged pilot.............

Just started flight training. Is this mainly for pre-flight planning or will the checkride examiner expect one to demonstrate this in flight? Tried solving a problem while flying x-plane and it wasn't pretty. Can't find any TH-cam examples of pilots doing this in-flight.

I have no experience and just beginning to learn from watching content. One thing I don't understand is how did he get 181=TC. And definitely don't understand how he got 104? Please explain, dummy it up for me.
Shaun Bryant you get your plotter and put in on the map to those two airports he shows. Make sure the plotter wheel is straight which means the 0 will always be straight up and parallel to the longitude. Then you basically just see the angle which is around 181°
Shaun Bryant 104 is the ground speed. After he did all those steps your ground speed is where the open hole which is located in the center of the e-6b

No, there is no FAA rule that says you must use an analog e6b on your checkride. You know how I know? I did it on my checkrides and passed, and I've sent students to their checkrides with electronic calculators and all passed.
Except now the faa has explicitly said that fore flight and garmin pilot are acceptable for use on checkrides, your examiner should not take it away from you as it is accepted as a primary flight planning tool

How do you do all that while flying?
Andrew Wilkerson these calculations are performed before your flight, typically for a VFR flight plan.
however robo is correct that most calculations are done before flight, We still us this method while flying cross countries to make sure were still on course and to verify that we have enough fuel. Cross country flying is very busy to say the least!
Do as much you can on the ground. In the air is all about guesstimate.

I passed all my checkrides without knowing how to use the e6b. the FAA does not require you to know how to use it and you are allowed to take a electronic computer in the test. its obsolete.

Must be an approved, i.e. aviation, electronic computer. You still have to know how to do all this, you just get to push buttons instead. I haven't used an electronic E6b, but I like having all the extra stuff like wind component and xwind correction charts right there. E6B is just more intuitive to me.

At minute 1:18 you say, "And I'll do a little bit of the leg work for you!". I need help with the leg work. On the test, I can't accurately measure the True Heading or the Distance....super frustrating!!!!!
5:35, Update, you are allowed to use an electronic E6B on any FAA knowledge test
You are allowed to take your electronic E-6B to your Written as long as it's not on a phone or tablet!
for times when the gadgets/toys lovers run out of power. ...in the past I lost power on all my gadgets while boating in the dark and ended up on a sandbar. Good thing that the boats can take a break when the navigator looses the bearings. While driving in the big city, I often get lost when my GPS runs out of power, maybe I need to learn to use the paper maps

Does this work with smaller numbers as well? For example, legs shorter than 10nm and time less than 10 minutes.
