A word from someone that nearly lost a finger. NEVER wear a metal ring while working with anything heavy, on equipment or with tools/presses. OR around electrical. Just don't. If you want to wear a ring get one of those silicone ones. It will only take one slip up to either crush your finger or it get snagged on something will deglove the finger. If you don't know what degloving is google it. Not pretty. I was working on my trolling motor batteries and my ring came between the wrench and the other terminal. One spark and it was red hot. 3rd degree burns around my finger, it seared the skin. Then I nearly degloved the finger trying to rip the ring off, while burning my fingers on my other hand. Lesson learned, never again.
He should google ring sheathing accident pics 😢
Yep I preach this all the time. I always get mixed responses though, some people actually get offended. My dad was strapping down a ladder on top of his truck and he jumped down and his ring got caught on the ladder so all of his body weight hit the ground while his finger was held up on the ladder and by the time he jumped back up his finger was barely hanging on. Thankfully they were able to save it but they had to cut the ring off.
Got mine caught on a door lever/ handle as I opened it and exited. Wore it on a chain around my neck there after...until the divorce.
When i did my hd mechanics course in the 80’s, another student grounded his metal stretchy watch strap on 24v power source
The burnt meat smell stuck in the shop for days.
I never wore jewelry since
Be safe
My wedding ring is in the wife's jewelry box where it belongs. I never wear any jewelry, ever. She will get over it.
the bolts came right out, because you welded a nut, which introduced heat to them, which freed them up..
One of the first rules taught in shop work, or any type of manual work, no jewelry of any type, especially rings, watches and necklaces. Seen a guy fall off a short ladder, maybe four feet up, he grabbed a pipe, wedding ring caught on a bolt, almost lost his finger. he was better off letting the doctor cut it off because it never worked right after, and that was 40 years ago.
GREAT VID - Stumbled across your channel last week. Have been watching since! The RING thing - 8th grade 1969. The fad was a silver ring, embeded black onyx stone with your initials. I was doing chin ups in the boys locker room on the toilet stall. The top of the bar came to an outward "V" so you couldn't do chin ups. Well, when I finished, I let go and my ring caught the V and I hung there, ring cutting into my finger. Long story short, back then the police dept. had a cutter and the cut the ring off. Go figure.. No more ring since. Not even a "silicone" wedding band. No thank you. My wife understood/understands. Keep the vids coming!
So glad I live in a warm climate with unlimited places to ride off-road.
For people who love to work on their own stuff, this is ASMR for the @home mechanic.
In my lifetime, I have never before seen a Mechanic so adept, Knowledgeable and willing to share what you have done. EXCELLENT, beyond words for this backyard mechanic. I can't wait for the rebuild and running of this Polaris...
Why did it happen? Polaris UTV engines are known for having crankshaft oiling problems. Defects or restrictions in both the block and the oil passages in the Crankshaft. I've heard of Many Polaris engines with less than 100 hours on them blowing up and having to be replaced. The 2012 Polaris rzr 900 xp engine that I just rebuilt only had 384 miles on it and it was blown up Twice. The 1st time it spun both connecting rod bearings and seized. The 2nd time 3 of the 8 valve guides dropped out of the head and bent 2 valves and broke 1 valve, piston, and bent 1 connecting rod. If you ever have the head off check and see what valve guides are in it. If they are the composite Steel ones, (they will be magnetic so check them with a magnet) replace them with good quality Bronze valve guides. The steel ones do not expand at the same rate as the aluminum head does when the engine gets warm which causes them to drop out of the head. Bronze has a similar expansion rate to aluminum so replacing them with Bronze valve guides is a very good upgrade.
That happened to my ring at work one time..after that I got a tattoo ring and will nvr wear a ring again on any finger..my shit almost got cut off due to ring crush..b safe.peace
For safety I keep my wedding ring in my safe and wear a silicone band for safety as I work with my hands as well. This way your finger won’t get ripped off.
Sorry about your loss Joe. Took one on the chin for the rest of us to learn from.
First thing i do always is a DEEP clean of the thing I’m working on , I hate working on dirty things I’m surprised you didn’t either , couldn’t imagine working on my bikes that dirty something is bound to find it’s way into whatever you’re taking apart, is the only reason you didn’t wash because of the weather? I’m in the south so never have snow issues anyways sweet videos as always 🤙
great video as always. Vinnie running across the screen back and forth in the beginning was great :)
haha he's a crazy dog
Just a tip, when splitting a case half get yourself some extra bolts 2" longer than stock, place and tighten in 3 or 4 spots across the cases and give them a whack with a hammer and your halfs will pop apart.
Edit: new oil pump assembly would make for cheap insurance for the amount of $$$$ your putting into it.
And now the star of our show, 2Vinny. Looks like a change of seasons in the Dairyland. Other than a dusting we have little in Minnesota
Sorry about the Polaris, built-in Osceola WI. Part out? Surely something you can salvage
Number 1 rule never wear rings in the shop. I've heard about people losing fingers from things like that. Sorry about the ring though that really is a bummer.
Remember this one thing on those engine's keep the motor oil changed regularly on those machines. That's for all of them that you have Joe. And always change the oil filter when you change the oil to.
Vinny was really motoring out there, he blew past you a few times. Looks like he was having a great time.
JMO look at the crank shaft rod journal and see if it blueish purple if it is that engine was starved of oil. The carbon build up tells me high mileage quite possible, but oil consumption due to oil change interval may be a factor because that oil was really black and looked a little thick there was a little sludgish oil in there and sludge doesn't lubricate. Lack of lubrication will eat rings and bearings.
One thing I’ve learned from watching your channel is what brands NOT to buy. I’m thinking Yamaha looks to be the best choice for everything.
Yamaha used to be good. Now they are outdated. If you want any kind of power, the only brands are Artic Cat, Polaris, Can Am.
Here in the west, it's all you will see.
Big dunes take horsepower.
The Arctic Cat Wildcat XX does use a Yamaha triple that kicks azz. It's 130 hp that will tune to 150 hp. The chassis was designed by Robbie Gordon, Baja champion. Built like a tank with an excellent suspension. It also has a belt driven alternator for a ton of lights.
@@TheBandit7613 I’m talking about reliability, and ease of repair.
@@TheBandit7613 Honda is still the most reliable brand your money can buy that’s a fact sure the others have all that power but you’re working on it more than riding it so I’ll stick with my Hondas at least I can ride them home and not be trailered home.
@@lukecombs5242 Nothing has ever broke on our Wildcat XX or our Maverick X3. Nothing. And we ride them hard.
The Honda will not make it up the big dunes at Dumont or Glamis and the suspension sucks over whoops.
@@lukecombs5242 Word. I got a free 1984 Honda TRX200 ATV a while back and the entire engine was so fucked it's a wonder it even ran. Rusty cylinder walls, worn rings, stretched timing chain, scored cam. You'd never know it besides some extra ticking. Honda is the way to go. I gave that quad to a friend and bought myself a new Rancher.
This guyi is a wizard. I would buy one of his atvs. The last time I split the cases on my bike was 1982 lol.
something oddly satisfying about pressing bearings in and out
Some of them box stores like menards or home Depot puts up Pole barn metal structures. You can get a big one for like $15000.
yeah I will have to build it. Would you watch a video on the building process?
@@2vintageI definitely would!
Joe, you could buy a metal ring sizer and slide your ring to your size to restore its shape of a jeweler could do it for you
Wow those parts are not cheap. I see a garage in the works by next summer maybe.
bent ring similar fashion to yours, was lifting a snowmobile frozen to the ground in severe winter conditions. wearing mitts, didn't notice squished ring until several hrs later when took mitts off. Could easily have lost finger to frostbite. Not worn ring since, spousal approval. I work with my hands constantly..
I love snow just as much as anybody who has lived with 4 seasons their whole life, but to see that much snow on the ground in NOVEMBER.. nah.. you can have Joe, you're a better man than I am. I know you're way up there, but man.. I'll be ok if it takes until January before we get a layer that thick. - I know that's not even really snow for you either.. I'm just saying! haha
Got my ring smashed once had to cut it off. I like the new ones out there. Save the gold for "going to town". Cool rebuild. The old Honda fired right up.
Great audio and video technique! Impressive skill + good teaching/sharing style. Bravo. Looking forward to re-assembly.
Those Polaris engines have had a problem with the oil pressure relief valve getting stuck and having no oil pressure. There are some videos on TH-cam that talk about that and show how to fix that. I have rebuilt three with bad cranks and I now stay away from Polaris stuff. I also wonder about how dirty things are, even when you're putting them together, I have to have things spotless for reassembly. Especially parting lines. You need a small parts cleaner, makes it easy to clean things up. Great videos, very informative. I don't know how you put out so many. Vinny is great too, where has Jade been??
BINGO oil pressure relief valve
The breaks & scrapem of utv engines, the exh. valves became maladjusted, during break-in and burned, rod bearing serves as an early warning alarm when the oil pump fails and the bad ring gap is factory. lol
You should mount a winch on the floor or wall to pull stuff into the garage!
Well Vinny seems happy to see the old Foreman 450
My fav channel. Love when new videos get posted. ❤ Vinny
You need spiral sockets... You can hammer them on the outside of rounded allen head bolts, saves so much time
I like to use a bolt to remove broken bolts. Ya build up with weld until its sticking out. Then you can weld the whole way around the bolt. The problem with using a nut is getting weld to stick to whatever your getting out. You have a small hole and it always welds to the nut and breaks off of the bolt.
It would be so satisfying if you bought a vapor honing blaster. When you were splitting those cases I just wanted to start scrubbing. Haha you mentioned getting a sand blaster which would also be great for some applications, nothing like putting fresh looking parts back together. Great work, I’ve learned a lot from you!
Guy at old job.. was trying to guide a drill on a long shaft for trailer skirt frame holes. Mistake # 1 was zip tying trigger. 2nd was holding spinning shaft with gloves to guide it. Grabbed glove and pulled hand / arm around the shaft. Had a wedding band on that smashed onto his finger. They had a hell of a time trying to remove it, as his hand was swelling up. Same can be said around electrical work as well. No jewelry while doing these types of jobs.
I always enjoy watching your videos and love the content, but just curious why you don't have a parts cleaner barrel to have clean parts when rebuilding an engine. A clean part is better than a dirty one lol
It is awesome to see that you actually fix things the right way and not just getting them and putting a little money into them and reselling them.
Keep up the good work and as always see you on the next one.
Enjoyed that teardown!
Damn that's alot of parts Joe...can't wait to see it all back together man. Thumbs up as always
Normally enjoy an engine out rebuild, but this looks like a mess. Appreciate the nuts and bolts patience and knowledge. Noted Vinny didn't trust it enough to ride on it without a crash helmet.
We learn something every video. Thx Joe for your hard work, it’s inspiring.
Minor details but Polaris didn’t start making ranger 570 (midsize) until 2014, not sure why the kit says 2012-2017 ranger as they didn’t exist 2012-2013. They were in the rzr line up.
Make sure you take that head in for a valve job . Take new valves and buckets and cam to machine shop. Those seats definitely need to be ground . And he can set the heights by grinding end of the valve to make lash right
As mentioned earlier, it's the oil bypass valve. They stick and bypass all of the oil pressure so it burns the crank bearing out. You need a new crank and rings, gaskets. Everything else is reusable. I've used Rev6 and they're Chinese junk but the best of the Chinese junk so go with it.
Didn't see valve seals included in the replacement kit? GL with the rebuild. Thanks for the videos Joe, very informative & varied, really look forward them.
I used to store my Kawasaki Prarie under a tarp until oneday it wouldnt start. Turns out field mice like making nests out of and in the wiring . It now stays in my shipping container.
You need a whisk broom for the snow. Keep on making this great content! Thanks for your hard work I’ve learned a lot!
26:55 Doing all the work you do you should really upgrade your ring to a Tuscan ring. Its way more durable ring and wont do that.... I have had one on my had for 16 years and no issues.
Hopefully you replace the oil chain sprockets too. It’s more likely they’re just as much the cause of the looseness as the chain. It should all go back as a set new.
If you have a good enough air supply a 3/4" impact wrench has, 1,200 ft-lbs. of nut-busting torque maybe add one to your tools. Love the videos keep them up.
So from what I see, it looks like there was some overheat possibly at some point. The exhaust valve springs are either weak from heat exposure or they were not closing completely due to, improper clearance between the cam follower and valve stem. Rev 6 is nice aftermarket parts, I am curious if you are going to replace the valve springs especially the exhaust? Also it seems strange to me that the oil pump chain is stretched so far that it may have jumped teeth on the gear. I wouldn't think that the oil pump would have loaded the chain to where it would stretch, unless it passed some foreign material through it and restricted its ability to rotate. Curious to see how tight the new chain is. I look forward to your rebuild video. I am a fan of Polaris, I think they are one of the better machines on the market. I still think you should get a Vapor Hone cabinet and clean-up the cases and parts. It would look like a new motor when you put it back together. Thanks for the video, Very Respectfully Lance.
Man, quite a project, cannot wait to see it run👍👍👍
Get a oil filter cutter to check the inside of the filters.
You should see what happens when jewelry shorts across something on an electric forklift with a 1000 ah battery. It instantly goes molten and then explodes throwing liquid metal like shrapnel.
That rev6 kit comes with a hot rods crank bought one of there kits and thats what came with it
I went to pic up a washer off my shop floor a few weeks back. Turns out it was my wedding ring! No idea how that happened (or how long it was there) LOL.
Did anyone else hear Vinny (at 1:00) saying "Ha ha ha dad, I'm way faster than your quad!"
You need to get Vinnie some goggles so he can ride with you .
Some advice for people splitting cases without a tool grab some bolts the same thread pitch as case bolts but longer and thread them all the way in on opposite sides and hit them with a hammer a couple times then tap around where the cases meet if they don’t come apart right away with a rubber mallet or dead blot. The longer bolts you thread all the way in will not damage anything they will bend before anything. Your welcome
At 21:40, I see the frustration and aggression rising! 😂 I've been there Brother, take your time and do it right the First and Only Time!!
How come you don't clean the machine before working on them? They'll look a lot better clean. I never worked on anything dirty
Do you have a spot on your property to build a storage shed? I wonder how much a 20x40 pole barn would cost. If so, sounds like a great next goal for the channel.
Yes on my other land I have some room
Those header bolts came out easy because of the heat from welding expanded the aluminum just enough to lossen the bolts.
Cause a lot of people do one and not the other which causes timing chain stretching out.,an etc.,etc. Wallet wise. It'll cost yah everytime over something simple as changing the oil and oil filter.,or adding coolant and so on. Spark plugs and Air filters to.
Hey from Ontario...that's definitely the result of it working hard... Most likely high revs, combined with back-torque and GARBAGE oil.
the cams said it all... they were untouched... great video...I think you'll make money flipping it... new ones are ridiculously expensive.."if" you can get one. Supply vs Demand... cheers...:)
Joe, I commented in the last video about your ring. Had a “premonition through impression” something was coming and posted it with last video’s comments.
You need a tour h to heat things up. Broken bolts and bearings will come out much easier if you warm up the housings.
Also, all that carbon in the head, I bet it was burning oil, they ran it low on oil, the crank got hot, rod bearing scored. So they quick did an oil change but it was too late. That's my guess.
Very possible
Likely a great guess
Well you just learned a lesson about being a mechanic wearing your wedding ring. I have seen a lot worse the best are when you arc it across a hot wire. Haven't wore mine for a long time.
That crank had gotten very hot to almost weld itself to the flywheel and other stuff. Whomever was driving must have smelled it but kept the pedal down. HaHa - I welded my ring between the starter hot stud and the frame of a old car that taught me to remove them. In this instance the ring took one for the team and kept his finger joint from getting smashed.
I've heard of guys losing their fingers cause of jewelry. Jade needs to get you a rubber band wedding ring. Maybe she would propose to you and it could be a whole new ceremony and more TH-cam content.
A tag around Your 💍 ring and channel lock pliers lightly squeezing it open on all sides of the ring.,or around it Joe.
I love Vinnie he's on it. But sorry about your loss on the UTV
Hard to make any money with these brand because of serious engine damage every time, top price would be 1K only
If the filter was doing its job then you wouldn’t be able to pour out flakes 😂
A man of patience but knowledgeable......great job, Dude....
Joe remember Red armor 2 stroke oil.,an Redline fuel treatment complete fuel system cleaner.
Awesome 👌 video man keep them coming
Sorry to tell you but you need to cut the filter open and look on the other side of the filer element. Just but a filter cutter wrench for future videos. Do it right for the guys that don't know.
And don't cut it with and kind of saw. That will put metal into it bud.
I had one break it folded inwards and I had to use plyers to get it off, never again take it of and put it back on afterwards
One last thing remember to re-adjust the valves to now on it. There possibly out of adjustment bye now for sure.
Why don’t you use some carpenters clamps to split the cases? Most can be converted to spreaders, it would provide a square push and less likely to bend a horn.
You should do a giveaway once a year for someone that comments or something would bring more traffic to your channel
Hopefully I can soon!
I think you need to take Vinnie with you before buying these things. He usually knows what is wrong with them.
You Gotta cut open filter to see Center hole on filter is return where clean oil comes out
I have used hot rod cranks in all my stuff and have never had 1 problem with them. A lot of problems I see from them is people doing things and they don’t know what they are doing.
I think you couldve got those bolts with vice grips and some heat!lol but you mentioned youve had trouble in the past welding nuts on studs make sure to shine up end of stud and grind galvanized coating off nut put your helmet on and stick the wire right down on stud and dont stop untill nut is full and the reason the studs were loose is because alum expands quicker than steel the heat tranfers from the welding and i havent seen you need this but you were working on seals i it reminded me of a handy tool for pulling seals on like side cases where you cant get into other side is to get a long sleeve nut and weld a sheet metal screw on one end and screw it on slide hammer then obviosly just drill little hole in seal screw it in and pull seal you mayhave known that but im old and been doing those kind of things a long time! (welder/fabrication) and a side note my dad was a jeweler and your ring was toast so a good pair of side cuts will snip that gold band and pretty easy fix for jeweler they resize it youll never know it!! And as ive said in previos comments get a milwakee cordless ratchet itll become your favorite tool! lol love the vids!
You need DeWalt impact the big one
I trust you are changing all the bearings
yes
I would inspect those cam chain guides out on it to. They might need changed.,or replaced.
This thing was likely burning oil and they ran it low. High RPM of driving on the road sucked what little oil there was in the pan out and destroyed the bottom end. They likely added oil later when they tried to get it running.
More complicated than I was expecting. All I can saw you know your business. Any idea what you spend on parts a year just to delight us watchers? 😊😊😊
Less than what he earns from views 😅
Need to build yourself a pole shed. I would save the equipment from the direct weather.
I need one bad
You should check out ground thumping motors out of Florida they deal only in Polaris engines.
Change your oil people. If the rings are that worn that bad it sucked in dust and that takes out the top end followed by the bottom. That chain would have needed to be stretched to the point of skipping teeth to cause the issue.
I think this might have just been run low on oil. It seems like it was burning a lot.
The dirty, dirty oil left in the bottom end shows that this UTV died of neglect, not much different than abuse.
I should have told You long ago that wearing a ring working in the garage is not a good idea . Get one of the flex rings .
The rev6 comes with hotrod crank
I am really curious why you went straight to cutting the heads off the exhaust bolts. I was wondering if you own an oxy-acetylene torch or even just MAP gas. They probably would have come out with heat and vice grips. I am glad you got them out easy enough but i would say the reason they came so easy was because they were hot from welding. Just curious on your thought process. For me cutting the heads off of bolts is usually last resort especially if they end up flush, which i realize they werent in this case. Good job anyways, i love your full engine rebuild video.👍
Exactly what I was thinking.
They were stripped out
@@2vintage hey man I mad a comment on your post about trying to reach you about a 400ex if u can get back to me that would be great thanks man
