Bette Davis has to be given great credit for appearing as a guest on talk shows such as Letterman and Carson after experiencing severe heath problems, including a stroke. She always appeared dressed to the nines and she was always entertaining. What an icon; she was a walking history of outstanding movies: All About Eve; Now Voyager; The Petrified Forest; Jezebel; The Little Foxes; Dark Victory. An extraordinary life and career.
I have never realized how incredibly funny Bette Davis is! She is spot on! I love when she's talking about the awards. And I laugh and laugh when she laughs. So beautiful she was even at that stage of her life!
It's amazing how you can see her spark. And see glimpses of her when she was starring in movies in her twenties. Those looks, that sparkle, her gestures. Just beautiful!
No one had the guts to tell her she couldn't smoke and they came to Dave about it and he said "Let her smoke, I'll pay the fine". So every time she came on Dave paid a $1000 fine to NYC
Elee Moussa There are - as far as their craft is concerned - good actors today; however, there are no longer any "movie stars". Bette Davis was, in every sense of the word, a Star!
The sweetest, most charming, and magnetic and accomplished actress, cinematic presence, and cultural icon. What a joy to watch this! And David Letterman is a very amusing foil to Bette Davis' unassailable glamor. Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I remember when Bette Davis was quite ill and going around the talk-show circuit for what I look now realize was her VICTORY LAP....a wonderful way to go out! GOD BLESS HER.... She showed up with entertaining stories and always dressed to kill...so thankful that she chose to get out there and let everyone say goodbye...
Hear! Hear! 1st thought that came to my mind. Give the great lady a standing ovation. she has given you more entertainment and talent than the 5 minute talent show auditionees.
She is a treat. I love her little questions and then presenting David with plastic lips. And then her comment that he shouldn't bringing up the subject of his pants since he wasn't married. She is so cute!
WHAT A CHARISMATIC AND WONDERFUL ACTRESS SHE WAS, WATCHING ANY VIDEO WITH HER , FEELS LIKE SHE'S STILL ALIVE .......................A POWERFULL WOMAN!!!
I totally agree! I was watching this thinking the same thing, they should have given her a standing ovation. She was the GREATEST actress ever to grace a movie screen, totally the best. The American Film Institute picked Katherine Hepburn as #1, and Bette Davis as #2 in the list of the greatest American actresses. In my book Bette Davis was #1, no one could beat her. A BRILLIANT actress all the way, in a class by herself!! Yes, definitely the greatest actress that ever lived!!
Bette DESERVED the OSCAR for "ALL ABOUT EVE"...wld've bn her 3rd. But, due to Anne Baxter's SELFISH PLOY, it didn't happen. Will NEVER forgive Anne for that.

She was the best actress in the world! No one can replace her! Only maybe Isabelle Huppert from France. But even so, Bette Davis was daring and saucy in 30s and 40s. That was a tremendous risk and she did it. She is still remembered. Davis is not only a star, she is one of the great personalities of XXth century in American History. She paved the way to current actors and actresses. Thanks for uploading this interview.
i would pay a pretty penny to have seen her in person - David Letterman and every person in the studio should feel fortunate to have witnessed one of the last great actresess of all time
Amazing how they give a standing ovation forthese hacks today that walk on stage and only one or two in the audience here began to stand up and no one else followed. She deserved an ovationespecially since she was a living legend.
Why does the audience not stand up for her??? I see one man does, but sits down when he realizes no one else is... Come on, this is a LEGEND here! ;) Anyway, I love her in this.. Yeah, sad to see her as so old but all of her wit and charm are still there and as sharp as ever. RIP Bette!!
I just finished reading her autobiography, "This 'n That", released just two short years before her death. It's a great book! If you get the chance, check it out! :D
Bette Davis was a petite woman. I heard she stands 5'2 tall. Women in those days were smaller than today's women. Marilyn Monroe was short too! I love small women! They're so sweet!
Love how she acknowledges her fans by head bows, wavea, and blowing kisses to the crowd. Will never be another like her. Thank you for your talent miss davis
She was amazing! She didn’t take a role so she could look beautiful, she took it for the privilege of bringing that character to life. My favorite line of hers is, “I’d like to kiss you, but I just washed my hair.” What is your favorite Bette movie line?
Well it looks like one guy stood up & then looked around & saw no one else was & looked like he said oh, ok, no one else, I'll sit down. A legend & ppl just sit there! Well I stand up for you too & Im with you on that one thesethingz!!! Bravo! A truly great actress- Miss D!!
I would have thought more people in the audience would have stood up for Ms. Davis when she came out onto the set. Class and manners are a dying if not dead art. RIP Bette
@@pamm8608 I noticed that 00:23. He shrugged and gave up. The audience didn't calculate or didn't care about all the many hours of wonderful entertainment Bette Davis gave them
All her Characters were Powerful and aloways surprised everyone at her size. She had an indominable spirit. The Lighting they used during the Golden age of Hollywood's Black and White years led us to believe these Incredible actresses were 9 feet tall. Joan Crawford was 4' 11'' as with Judy Garland. but they were all larger than life.. It's a shame today's actresses dont have the talent these women do...
I bet you Dave looks back on this one fondly. Even as a frail old lady all eyes were on Bette. A Star like no other. Smart and funny and quick-witted to the very end.
Her charm, manner, eyes and life are so apparent. 🤩🤩🤩 She died the same day as the 1989 San Francisco area earthquake. Oct 17, 1989. It figures. Love you Bette.
@Brighteyes1ful this clip was definitely from the 80's so it may have taken place after her stroke. In any case she holds up pretty well for someone in her 70s.
She was a fabulous actress. She was a very truthful person and her own biological daughter treated her disgracefully. BD Hyman is a Born Again Christian who now claims her mother was a Witch 🙄
@Tomcat28563 Agreed, I thought the same thing. This is a Hollywood legend in the midst of their presence & they did not give her respect by standing up. I would have killed to be in that audience. Legends like Bette are no more. This woman is a true icon.
@NFitalianGuy It is one of the many reasons why I choose not to watch Letterman. If she were alive to have been on Jay Leno, no one in the audience would have sat or stopped clapping until she directed them to.
lol no she wasn't. Joan Crawford literally screwed her that one time and Bette probably never forgave her for it. The media folks knew it & would leave no opportunity to bring Joan up. That's all.

The letter !
Never again will we see a Miss Davis!
YES!
Her red Paris dress on Johnny Carson was the best! ❤
We will not see a person like her again but if I had met her I would be scared oh yes but she’s amazing so dedicated to acting ❤
Sharp like a tack until the very end - LOVE this great woman!
I have never realized how incredibly funny Bette Davis is! She is spot on! I love when she's talking about the awards. And I laugh and laugh when she laughs. So beautiful she was even at that stage of her life!
One of the greatest legends ever. They don't have any stars today that could compare to her.
One of the most adorable moments in TV history! Really enjoy David interviewing Bette. They get along so well.
Will never be another Bette Davis-ever! God broke the mold with her! A True-Blue Movie Star, in ever sense of the word! Rest In Much Peace Ms. Davis.
Nobody tops Bette Davis. She is HYSTERICAL and smart!
So glad I found this interview with her wearing the Patrick Kelly dress! What a great designer gone too soon!
It's amazing how you can see her spark. And see glimpses of her when she was starring in movies in her twenties. Those looks, that sparkle, her gestures. Just beautiful!
Wow she is so fabulous- what a great sense of humor!! She should have gotten a standing ovation!
ABSOLUTELY ✊⭐️
I said the SAME thing! She UNDOUBTEDLY DESERVED a STANDING OVATION...What a LAME audience!!!
Best David Letterman guest ever.
This video really is the bee's knees.
Thank you and best wishes from Moscow.
Notice the cigarette?
Only Bette Davis could go into NBC Studio's and do that!!
No one had the guts to tell her she couldn't smoke and they came to Dave about it and he said "Let her smoke, I'll pay the fine". So every time she came on Dave paid a $1000 fine to NYC
What a legend! All these crappy actors today should take note from this fantastic actress!

HORRIBLE AUDIENCE to NOT give her a STANDING OVATION! Where did they all come from? N Korea? China? Russia? Alabama???
One thing that I loved about Bette Davis was that she often dressed up for television interviews. She never looked sloppy, even when she dressed down.
Yes. She truly is one of the greatest that ever lived.

The Great Miss Bette Davis chose a black fashion designer (The Talented Patrick Kelly) to design that pretty & whimsical dress!👏🏾

WHY? WHY didn't the audience STAND? And, to think she only died a few mos later.
i love everything about this..every single second
I remember this! 1989. Thanks!!
she was so great, i wish i could had a chat with her
I never knew how great she was with people and very charming :-)
I wish we can still write her and Joan fan mail

Making Letterman nervous and maybe blush!? Only Madame Bette! Love love love her!
A LEGEND
I would've stood up to applaud regardless of anyone else :)

Small lady. HUGE personality. A classic star. :)

I love Bette's "Pimp Cup"!!!!
My grandmother just passed @ 95 she always dressed to the nines' this interview makes me think of her.
Thank you for your uploads of this phenomenal character!
This was one of her last TV apperances in April 89. She was 81.
She was so lovely. I miss her honesty and her Talent greatly. They don't make him like that anymore. All hail Miss Bette Davis.💕🏆🥰🚬
The brightest star in the Hollywood firmament.
Susan Saradon should've played her in a movie. She looks like her and has her kickass attitude.
For a minute I thought she was going to climb up on the desk like Drew Barrymore!
Bette Davis, such a cool person.
Davis always had a goblet on later year interviews. Here she knocks it over.
I like it when the guy stands up 0:25, Oh well no one else stood up..i might as well sit! LOL
So long since I've seen Miss Davis in this last chapter of her life. So frail and yet so feisty! Has it been that long since she passed away!?!?!
She died in Oct of 1989
Bette reminds me of my late grandma who died in 2017 at 87.
I would have thought more people in the audience would have stood up for Ms. Davis when she came out onto the set.
Class and manners are a dying if not dead art.

Ms. D. & Patrick Kelly. Two legends!
indeed, she was a true movie star, at true actress...movie star royalty.
She was adorable.
@caligirl3000 totally agree with you. None of the stars nowadays has that kind of regalness and depth of character.
😉 Love the outfit. (???) By Patrick Kelly
