      Ben: Good point. Hallmarks of prior generations were humility and modesty. Most of the true Golden Age stars didn't come from a pampered upbringing - they are endured and I think were appreciative of any good breaks that came their way: Bette, Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, etc.

    • @benkleschinsky
      @benkleschinsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@AstralPixie I think it speaks volumes she wanted to raise her kids in the same modest environment she was raised in. You can tell she really appreciated hard work and putting in the effort for her kids to have a normal and rather strict upbringing. That generation was raised to believe you have to put in hard work, and if you do you will get rewarded. In the Golden Age of Hollywood you showed up, and if you put in the effort you would be a star. It was where dreams were made. That is not really as true anymore to the same extent. The celebrities in our culture increasingly come from more privileged and less modest backgrounds.

      When she was working on a film with the Scottish actor, Gordon Jackson, she mentioned that she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. He bought her a circular one and as she unwrapped it, she barked "Its a round jigsaw, what in the hell are you trying to do to me? This is one of the most honest of her interviews that I've seen. She doesn't pull any punches nor sugar coat the facts of her life and her attitudes. Also, she reveals her softness and vulnerability along with her toughness here which makes her very relatable and even endearing. Great job!

      B.D. Is a bit...odd. She posts videos to TH-cam from her 'ministry' in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a few years ago, she posted a video about witchcraft and said her mother, Bette Davis, practiced witchcraft and that she witnessed her transform into a satantic figure with animal claws and claw at a door in their home. If anyone thought before then that B.D. Hyman might be a reliable source, it may be time to rethink that.

    She approached all that life threw at her in her later years like a trouper....that lady was made of iron...They say growing old is not for sissies..she met everything and fought right back and I would say that for the most part She Won. I can only hope for 1/2 of that kind of strength. I love all her interviews.

  • @pedal4ever
    @pedal4ever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I grew up with the wrong impression of her. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte was my first film. She was old and took different "crazy old lady" roles then. Good films for what they were. Saw her on talk shows and thought she was just a tough old actress who's time had passed. Well, I was dead wrong. Finally got around to watching her classic old films, like All About Eve and Old Acquaintance, and so many more. Incredible. Saw an interview where she said she fought Hollywood for scripts and roles that only she would approve...that respected her independence, and women in general, as smart and having a brain, contrary to the stereotypes of Hollywood back then. That shows in her films. She's right up there with Katharine Hepburn. Bottom line, has so many excellent films, and was such an amazing and powerful actress. One of the all time greats!
