I wanted to mention because of a lot of comments, that my health is complicated. I am not back in any way. I have been ill for over a month and spent some time in the hospital in December, but I am still very ill with various illnesses and potentially some unknown illnesses. I pushed myself to film the outdoor portion of this video and it took everything out of me. I don't think I can film anything outdoors for some time. I am doing my best but for the time being I cannot film the way that I used to.

Hey, hope you get better soon.. great video. I would figure you would have tied this video with save the 40 s&w series. Back in 2012 I carry and used federal hst 165 grain. For personal defense. I used the federal round to incapacitate a pit bull that charged at me. I hit the threat center mass in the chest. As a result, the bullet tumble inside of him and came out its right side of it face. The dog ran off about 25 yards then turn back around to charge at me again. he was about 5 yards again and saw my firearm and ran off for good to his master. From my understanding the dog had to be put down and I was cleared without incident. Good luck hope you feel better. I was hoping you did a stand off between federal. Hst, gold dot. Hornady critical defense. Winchester defender, and remington ultimate defense/ golden Saber 165 grain would have been cool against windshield test/ car door since it's your car/truck gun.

Get better. Rest all ya can and heal up.
TH-cam can wait for a wee bit for you to recover.
Of late, I find myself gravitating to .357 magnum for concealed carry.
      But.
      For many years, my go-to, EDC, was a Glock 27 or 23 .40 S&W.
I've liked the cartridge since its inception and proliferation back in the 90's and feel that it's a lot better than non-+p and most +p 9mm.
It's only in certain loadings in +p or +p+ that 9mm approaches or matches standard .40S&W out in the REAL world.

I have been a range officer for the CHP for 22 years. We currently carry the 180 grain HST, in the SW MP .40. We have been issued ammo in the past from Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Winchester Ranger T-Series, and Winchester Ranger ( last non-premium ammo we carried circa 2004ish). Of those I didn’t like the either of the Winchester, both due to my range performance with it and in OIS, and I wasn’t a big fan of the Remington either. The Sabers had squib load issues and jacket separation problems.
I investigated Officers Shootings (OIS), for about 12 years as a member of a shooting team in two different Divisions, and saw plenty of dead subjects from .40 SW rounds. The Gold Dot did amazing. I saw what they do to stop a threat, in homes, cars or open spaces, and the Gold Dot just flat out does what it is supposed to do. I was so impressed by the Gold Dots I carry Gold Dot’s in my backup/conceal carry 9mm, .38 Special, .357, .380. and .45. to this day.
However, the HST has been our duty ammo for the past five plus years or so, and it does a phenomenal job. CHP tests our ammo constantly and if it doesn’t make our penetration, velocity, and weight retention standards when randomly pulled for testing, then that ammo is replaced by which ever premium self defense .40 SW 180 grain subsonic load will and the search for the new duty ammo will start. So HST is passing random quarterly testing for about five years or so and seems to be the best thing going in .40 SW 180 grain subsonic. Buying either of these and you will be well taken care of.
FYI for our 12 gauge it is the Federal Premium 00 Buck 9 pellet copper coated with Flight Control. I can tell you this stuff is the only defense shotgun ammo you should buy. It patterns like a slug out to about 15 yards from the 870 18 1/2 inch barrel shotgun and will continue to pattern to about a paper plate size spread to about 50 yards.
For the AR15 Patrol Rifle - SigSauer M400 - 20 Round MagPul it’s the 62 grain Gold Dot in .223 Remington and has been that way for about 15 years. Prior it was the Winchester Ranger Series but the Gold Dot .223 in 62 grain has been a solid performer for close to two decades. We had issues of the Winchesters bullet moving within the case as the round was stripped from the magazine and into the breech of the rifle. This movement caused the round to travel further into the breech, thus allowing the firing pin to fall short of the primer or make a lite-strike on the primer. This flaw caused the rifle not to fire. Often during a range session 4-6 rounds from two 20 round mags would fail to fire for this reason. Switching to Gold Dots and the problem went away.

Little brother was part of the panel that chose Federal HST for the CHP's M&P40 2.0's. If you're stuck in a coffin and have to shoot through cars, they chose HST for it's barrier blindness and terminal expansion.

Great test. .40 S&W really is a good round overall. I was at a ballistics seminar a few years back put on by our local FBI and they way their guru put it, the .40 essentially does what a .45 does but from a 9mm sized gun ... sorta.
We tested HST rounds, 180 and 165 through auto steel, auto glass, clothing, basically their who schtick and it did VERY well. It was one of the most barrier blind .40 rounds we tested. Again, a few years back but I assume things are the same.
I, too, most often have an airweight revolver on me. But I usually have a vehicle gun, too. It may or may not also ride on me, or be secured in the vehicle, but usually the thought there is a bad situation is suddenly WAY worse. Great video!

I like the hst 165 best but I also like the barnes 140 vortx, the vortx doesnt match up ballistically but its solid copper and the expansion is about the size of a penny and the petals are kinda sharp...also expands well out of a short barrel and felt recoil similar to 9mm.

3 loaded magazines two with 165gr HST and one with 155gr Federal Hydra shock .
I have never considered switching from 40cal but if I did it would be 10mm!!

in and around vehicles, I don't think you could pick a better caliber than 40 for carry. DocGKRs own research concluded it was the best for intermediate barrier penetration, and it tends to do the best through auto doors, laminated glass (windshield) and heavy clothing. 40 also does very well against animals, too. The gold standard for animal testing is a round that does well through the laminated auto-glass test, according to Dr. Roberts. 40 also boasts really good capacity and form-factor size and weight compared to 45 but with much better intermediate barrier penetration than 9 (and on average a 33% larger wound volume).

Gary K Roberts is a dentist .... not a terminal ballistics expert. Just look at his asinine comments about the 357 Sig for starters. The guy is a joke.

    • @tenmauto
      @tenmauto 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

He's said 357sig is perfectly fine, albeit expensive to shoot. But I'm assuming you're implying something about his dismissal of ballistic pressure wave voodoo. Remember when Massad Ayoob stated that 357sig would kill snakes just by the bullet passing near them? lol. And just a dentist? Here's a tiny part of his bio.. "Dr. Gary K. Roberts (DocGKR) is currently on staff at Stanford University Medical Center; this is a large teaching hospital and Level I Trauma center were he performs hospital dentistry and surgery. After completing his residency at Navy Hospital Oakland in 1989 while on active military duty, he studied at the Army Wound Ballistic Research Laboratory at the Letterman Army Institute of Research and became one of the first members of the International Wound Ballistic Association. Since then, he has been tasked with performing military, law enforcement, and privately funded independent wound ballistic testing and analysis. As a U.S. Navy Reserve officer from 1986 to 2008, he served on the Joint Service Wound Ballistic IPT, as well as being a consultant to the Joint FBI-USMC munitions testing program and the TSWG MURG program. He is frequently asked to provide wound ballistic technical assistance to numerous U.S. and allied SOF units and organizations, such as the Canadian Armed Forces Weapons Effect and Protection SIPES TDP. In addition, he has been a technical advisor to the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners, as well as to a variety of Federal, State, and municipal law enforcement agencies. He has been a sworn Reserve Police Officer in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he now he serves in an LE training role." It's amazing how many people blindly refer to the IWBA and Gary Roberts as the de facto authority on ballistics.
Do you know what peer-reviewed journals are and why Gary the dentist doesn't publish in them?
"The peer-review process subjects an author's scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field (peers) and is considered necessary to ensure academic scientific quality."
With the exception of a few doctors, the "review" panel of the IWBA is comprised of dentists physicists, criminalists, law enforcement, engineers, ect.
Engineers, physicists criminalists and alike are unequivocally [not] terminal ballistics experts. As such, you can't refer to an independent ballistics source as being the de facto authority. ... * unless the entire review panel are actually experts in the field. *
Gary K Roberts and his completely erroneous comments on the 357 Sig when compared to the 9mm = "At best it offers no gain in bullet penetration and expansion characteristics. What is the point of this cartridge?"
What kind of "ballistics expert" does a hit piece on the 357 Sig with Lucky Gunner and uses a 9mm 147gr projectile to compare ballistic performance with a 357 Sig 125gr? The answer is either an unintelligent one .... or a completely disingenuous one.
The 357 Sig unequivocally outperforms the 9mm in both penetration and cavitation and that is easily demonstrated by shooting the same bullet weight from both weapons into 10% ordinance gelatin.
Oh and Gary the dentist doesn't have even a shred of accredited authority to "dismiss" the dynamics of ballistic pressure waves.

Good to see you back. I always carry a G19 with a spare mag and never feel undergunned. You have to consider the likelihood of a stop in 5 shots and what could be the capacity of the bad guy's firearm; he could have a g17 and a 33rd magazine.
147gr +p 9mm G2 Gold Dot is a very good barrier penetrator, the same as a 180gr .40 Gold Dot in my experience. The .40 has much greater expansion through barriers like auto glass, wood and sheet metal from deformation. I don't find HST to be the most accurate or available but Gold Dot has been acceptable and always in stock.
A buddy of mine was involved in a defensive firearm use in a road rage situation. He managed to draw on a guy who drew on him first and put a couple of rounds on target from behind through a rear windshield and car seat. The guy drove 15 miles and passed out from blood loss as the police arrived. He survived his injuries and nothing happened to my friend except his firearm was seized and never returned. My friends gun was a Taurus g2c loaded with FMJ of unknown brand/weight

Man, hope you get well soon! I own that same .40, so I appreciate when you do tests with yours - it's what made me feel better about the Critical Defense ammo I bought!
I like 180s, they aren't as snappy - but then they don't hit with as much authority either, since they can't hold as much powder as 165s and lighter.

    • @Ret.MSgt4045

Momentum! A 180 grain bullet hits plenty hard. One definite thing that was discovered during the Thompson and Lagarde tests back in 1904 yet somehow has been forgotten in just the last few decades by many in the gun community is that the calculated energy on paper (kinetic energy) doesn’t always equal useable energy. While a 165 grain bullet might have more kinetic energy the 180 grain still has more mass as an advantage and I can remember reading many years ago one of the FBI agents involved in the move to the .40 S&W state he wanted the round that would have the same characteristics as a 230 gr. 45 ACP round. Well they ended up determining that it needed to weigh 180 to 200 grains, and travel between 990 and 1050 feet per second (fps). So even back then the FBI understood momentum was more important than kinetic energy. How much of a difference 15 grains really makes I couldn’t say but like you I do like the recoil of the 180 gr better and a lot of law enforcement have used and still use the 180 gr round as well so I just stick with that.

I have a friend who started carrying at 21 back in 01 and that was when .40 S&W was the thing. And he still carries it. He started with a Beretta 96, then went onto a Glock 23, then Sig P226 .40 and he's got a bunch more. I got into in a totally different way, I started hearing how 9mm was "king" and how .40 S&W sucks, as about 9-10 years ago people started the nonsense about .40 being terrible. I got into it by being curious, testing it and looking at street data. Considering the fact that it's about as high as you can go for a pistol that still fireds with limp wrists and regularly shows 1-2 shots stopping threats, i'd say it's about as good as it gets.

Thanks for this review, Sam. I use a 40 S&W for my carry gun quite a bit. I've been really impressed by the accuracy but have never had the chance to fire the ammo at anything other than paper or steel targets so I always wondered about expansion in jell. My firearm is a S&W model 646 and it is amazingly easy to shoot accurately using double action. It points so naturally it is like pointing my finger and is fast to reload.

Take care of yourself! Always enjoy your videos. I bought the Ruger LCR 327 myself a few years ago. I pocket carry it on the farm most days while working. Not too concerned about 2 leg varmits there so I usually carry with 32 Long or 32 H&R Mag. It carries pretty easy in my front pocket even when working. But don't often carry it in most other situations. The reason, I am concerned that if I need to protect myself it might be in a situation where I really need more rounds. Your story drives home that you never know when a threat and what type will come up. You really want to be sure that you feel comfortable with wat you are carrying when it comes. So a semi auto makes me feel a bit more prepared.

I prefer 40s&w M&P first gen and I use 180 grain gold dots. I fell in love with that combo when I was cooking and a buck came very close and my hunting rifle was too far away to recover. I used my pistol with my carry ammo shot that buck at 7 yards. Buck was sideways to me and the round hit a little far back due to human error, missed first set of ribs, went through a lung hit a rib on the far side deflected and punched through the other side but looked like it was pretty much out of energy. Bullet expanded and one round did the job, buck ran and died 50 yards away (ran past my rifle). At this point I 100% trust that ammo so moving to any other ammo that to me is "new" adds a level of doubt that I should not have.

Good test, Sam! I’d lean toward the HST, but it comes down to which functions most reliably and accurately. And, since you envision defense in or from a vehicle, possibly some barrier testing might be in order. Thanks for a fascinating comparison. 👍

I carry a (5) shot revolver on occasion , but hearing your experience makes one realize that there's no substitute for firepower . The FBI concluded that the .40S&W is the best compromise and the statistics confirm it . Great test , I think either one would be good . I think it's a great cartridge. A majority of people will tell me that it's dumb and with a 10mm it's the same but better. But they are not factoring in that a 10mm is a .45 ACP frame size and that recoil can make some guns malfunction, in fact I see a lot of malfunctions online with various new 10mm pistols. Seems like .40 S&W is backed off just enough to to always run and still have a lot of stopping power potential.

I started policework in 1998 and we carried S&W 4006’s and we used the HST ammo. We later went with Glock 21SF, which I hated. It was just big and brick on your hip. We used the HST with that as well. While on the SWAT team we carried Glock 35’s and used HST ammo. Currently we carry Glock 17’s and carry Hornady critical duty ammo. I personally EDC a Glock 23 with the Hornady ammo. Hollow points are illegal in my state.

Hope you get better soon! I had a couple of young guys in a big lifted pickup try to run me up into the curb and off the road one time because they wanted to cut in front of me into a right turn lane. I guess they were pissed because I knew they were planning to do it and I took off when our light turned green, but they were going to just run right into the side of my car.
I wasn’t interested in being involved in an accident and let them go in front of me. But if they had done anything too crazy, like stop the truck and get out to mess with me, they would have been looking down the business end of a Glock 22 loaded up with Hornady Critical Duty-not a bad choice for car doors and glass.
My 40s are loaded up with Winchester Ranger 165-grain at the moment, just because I bought 500 rounds a while back on sale. It is definitely a good weight for the 40.

I'm not even going to get into the windshield and car door penetration business. No, I'll just stay with a very general impression of "effectiveness" in my statement of personal observation. I have been known to get wrapped around the axel with all the minutia associated with "this versus that," and "that versus this" when speaking of pistol calibers. Guilty your honor. Then a couple of years ago two guys came across our stainless tables as a duo that had been in a botched home invasion. They both breached the homeowners door consecutively and both were dispatched consecutively. Both characters received two shots each. One took two to the chest and the other, one to the chest and one damn near straight between the eyes. The homeowner released the two from their earthly bonds with a Glock 19. I can't help but think the homeowner is a satisfied customer and likely (although I'll never know) isn't getting himself turned on his head over if he should have been using .40, .357 Sig, 10mm., .357 magnum, .45 acp., a rifle, or a shotgun. What struck me was 2 shots on each perp caused the passing of 2 decedents with 9mm. Luger in this particular case. Double tapping each perp was probably just good training practice but the reality is 2 shots each may not have even been necessary to affect a stop. It was sort of an epiphany for me, the guy who owns and champions all the aforementioned pistol/revolver calibers and still has some strong opinions as to each one's efficacy. It's just that today, those opinions aren't nearly as pronounced since that day.

Sorry you had to go through that, and sorry you are sick! I hope you get better. On a different note, I only buy two kinds of ammo for my 40 S&W, the 165 grain HST, and the G9 defense 95 grain EHP. There is no better ammo as far as permanent wound cavity is concerned than the G9. Look at viper weapons systems testing on it and you will see it performed the best out of every other caliber. But it's accurate as well. If you only had one shot left and you had to make the shot count, G9 it would be for me, and it being barrier blind is a plus

Seems like they always expand those very tough copper petals out, and they tend to stay out really big a majority of the time. Number's like .70" expansion is pretty normal or even .80" and .90" expansion for larger calibers is common. I just don't see that with other brands. Winchester T-Series does do that, but Winchester is confusing. They offer 'bonded' and 'T-Series' and other varieties all with different bullets all in the same Ranger blue box so it's easy to get something different than what you wanted. The HST is simple, always easy to get the right one. Probably why they made the name so short lol

They'll figure out what's getting you eventually and start accurate treatment. Your recovery should go quickly after that you're a young guy.
Thanks for the test. I recently went back to .45 but found holsters, parts, and accessories can be difficult or non-existent for .45's that aren't 1911's. But they typically are available for .40's because 9x19's & .40's normally share frames. So I've gone to .40. (Beretta PX4) And I'd chosen HST 165's a few weeks ago.
You'd been fine with the LCR .327. Your mission is only to break contact. At least when you're alone. More gun does give you other options. I have LCR .327's, too, wife loves it. However, while loaded-up .327 Fed from a snub can give up to 9x19 performance, the reduced loadings and .32 mag loadings just provide .380-like performance. That's not very reassuring. Carry "more gun" when you can, as you've decided. Get well soon!

Being shorter than a 9mm cartridge, you sacrifice valuable powder space with the 180gr. That sectional density could be fun to have in certain situations tho.
