    The department that I worked for 27 years let you carry the caliber of your choice, justhad to be a glock. If you didn't buy your own, the issued side arm was a glock 22 in .40 S&W. So I've done a lot of bilistic tests in .40. Always believed that .40 performed better in the 155-165 range. 180 seemed a little heavy to me. 180 is great for 10mm, but to much for .40 . Really enjoyed the test as always. Have a wonderful day.

      Fully agreed Joe. Mid weight, high velocity loads are the .40's sweet spot, same as 124gr is the sweet spot for 9x19.
      I personally prefer a 165gr Ranger T/Bonded or Speer Gold Dots, as they perform best in .40 and that's what's in my G22. 180gr .40 loads came into being because of the 10MM, personally 180gr should've stayed in 10MM as it performs better in 10MM than .40

      .40 s&w is the ideal cartridge caliber, but 180gr was always too heavy for the .40 s&w, great for the 10mm auto though, between 135gr minimum and 165gr maximum parameters is best, with 155gr/150gr bullet weight being ideal

    I think 165 gr is the sweet spot for 40 cal. especially in the shorter barrels. I carry a Shield 40 with a 3.1" barrel. 180 is 10mm weight. 165 gr gives you the speed and the hard hitting weight. Underwood makes some pretty impressive 40 cal ammo, but hard to beat Federal HST! Great video.

    Interesting the 155 HST didn't go all the way through the gel block. It was the size of a barn door. Both rounds were impressive, 40 S&W ammo is available and the prices are coming down due to unpopularity. That's sad since it's such a good round.

  • @c.r.chandler5905

    Both of those were very impressive. My calibers of choice are .357SIG which is CLOSELY followed by .40. The primary reason why I have began to edc my P-229 in .40 is because ammo is just so expensive and hard to come by in .357SIG. I would be interested in seeing how those perform out of the full length Beretta.

    Another excellent video man, I appreciate your work. Now that even more people are bailing on .40 for 9mm, I have seen .40 ammo and guns drop below the price of a 9mm, and with the ammo variety available for each caliber, I don't think you can make an argument than 9mm can match or beat .40.

    Dang! I don’t care what anybody says, the 40 is a kick ass round. While I prefer 357Sig my summer carry is a M&P 40 Shield. I guess everyone has a grain preference but with that kind of action and expansion, hey, just pick one!
    As a side note you should check out Taylor’s Knock Out (KO) formula. It uses bullet weight, MV and caliber (for hollow points the size of the expanded projectile) to determine the KO number. The higher the value the better the end result.

      9mm = not enough🤏
      10mm = too much💪
      .40 s&w = just right👌
      also;
      .45 acp = not enough(velocity & fpe) and too much(bullet size{penetration suffers, especially through barriers} and weight) at the same time🤏💪
      .357 sig = too much(velocity is too high for a small bullet, creates over penetration issue) and not enough(bullet weight and size{over penetration and small wound expansion, performance is less than expected too for such velocity, because of the small size and weight}) at the same time💪🤏
      and if you divide the bullet weight and size and the velocity and fpe of the .357 sig with the .45 acp you get the .40 s&w, ie; "just right" 👌⚡

      @Ethan Mac higher speeds TEND to improve expansion and reduce penetration. Weight is the primary driver for an expanded bullet to penetrate. Light and really fast bullets tend to dump their energy more quickly than slower heavier bullets. Their wound channels tend to be wide in the beginning but end sooner than heavier and slower bullets.
