I legit played this on Gamecube. In terms of the presentation, yeah it was really good, but the washed out colors just didn't ring well with me. Character models were on point for the Marvel characters at least.
The Imperfects were really unbalanced, packing the higher levels of strength, and felt like if you weren't skilled enough to beat ass with the Marvel team, the Imperfects would be grossly too powerful. Very few Marvel characters could lift the heaviest things by comparison.
EA didn't get a chance to utilize the Imperfects, nor did they get the chance to balance them out, and the ad campaign being all about Paragon was... Shallow at best...
Honestly, they should have just focused on more content. Adding more characters to the roster, and more stages, and let the players duke it out in ALL the stages in ALL their glory like a backroom brawl at a WWE event at the time. If the entire stage was more a split screen affair where you met up in the middle of a large stage with an arena in the middle, it could have been a lot better.
But in terms of controls, EA really fucked up and got it backwards with B being to jump, and A used to attack. I get the A button on the Gamecube controller was the biggest button of all, but it was no excuse to reject the control tradition of "B = Attack, & A = Jump"!. they made a terrible mistake on that control setup.
Also, the whole "Sacrifice" bullshit where you were FORCED to sacrifice a Marvel hero for an Imperfect's story was just absolute BULLSHIT! ESPECIALLY with the story ending with the Imperfects taking the helm, when we know a hero like Wolverine would just come back angrier than before and unleash his rage on whoever tried to bring him down in the first place! AND if he found out anyone he was friends with was killed, then a quick death from Wolverine was the smallest gesture of mercy, compared to him eviscerating you like a group of inmates in prison would to a pedophile!
It felt WRONG to sacrifice the Marvel heroes, including beloved heroes like Wolverine and Spider-man for characters like Johnny Ohm, Brigade, Faultzone, and eventually Paragon and Van Rokel. It felt more like blasphemy to be forced to end the story of a Marvel hero for one of the EA Mary Sues.

The fact that the renderer would crash the game when the camera was at a certain angle is silly, but the fact that they could never fix the bug and just locked the camera so the deadly angle could never be reached is just... transcendent.

@@viscountrainbows2857you clearly have no idea what game coding in company time is, since your example is waaaaaay off. Let me tell you why.
They designed a camera system. That camera system, because of not concrete evidence and experience, was acknowledged as a working system. That camera system works with a third party renderer.
Let's say during alpha testing, they didn't find the bug, because maybe the bug didn't occur in the first place, because probably they hadn't put everything yet (it's still alpha).
Let's go to pre beta time. During testing, the renderer is overlapping some whatever code and causes the game to crash, as it stops the game's frame update.
Now, the debugging comes to place. You run diagnostics, you run safety checks, and after days (which are days without progress, so losing-money days) you find that the renderer is causing it.
There you have to face the reality of the situation:
      a) spend human resources and lots of labour hours on a THIRD PARTY RENDERER (meaning not company's renderer) to debug, diagnose and the recoding
      b) limit a bit the gameplay and save tons of work on a THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE.
The sane choice is to go with b, since the third party renderer might not be used in a future project, so fixing that bug, would classify it as totally useless, since there is already a b option.

As a naive teen, I thought that the relationship between Capcom and Marvel was one of mutual admiration and respect, that Marvel permitted Capcom the license not just for the money (I wasn’t aware how dire the straits were for Marvel when they agreed to those deals), but because they thought Capcom would handle the IPs the best (definitely better than LJN and the other companies doling out terrible games) and the success of those games are what kept it going. Heck, the release of Pocket Fighter made a possible X-Babies Vs Pocket Fighter seem like a natural culmination (imagine the chibi characters fighting a comics-accurate Mojo).
When Marvel Nemesis was announced I was appalled. Why trust anyone else but Capcom? Of course, hindsight is 20/20 (man, does that sound different post year 2020), and while it’s on record that Capcom employees were massive fans, for Marvel, it was strictly business. A shame.

At that time EA was HUGE and was cranking some absurd numbers: Need for speed, lord of the rings, FIFA, 007, def jam, burnout, 007... They had an absurd number of big seller franchieses and licensed games and as much as I love MvC it did not sell as well, it wasn't mainstream enough.

it gets to the heart of the problem with Matt's overview here: Marvel in 2005 absolutely thought a fighting game deal with EA would mean The Thing and Spider Man VS Barry Bonds and Busta Rhymes. Marvel as a "serious" company that guarded its IP didnt happen until the Iron Man/Avengers movies became a hit.
Also: a "sports celebs" vs Marvel heroes game... definitely woulda made more money than this shit. I am guessing the road block was in portraying the athletes' likenesses

He even had the longest (that I can remember) combo string that almost resembled a bnb from umvc3

    • @ElSandwich777
      @ElSandwich777 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@oknodiangames6three things I recall strongly from my experience.
Venom was busted. Ranged throw, projectile and super strength. Also his air movement was goofy. Always gave me a hard time.
Brigade was more busted. Though he ate energy like a termite eats real estate, he was able to kill in only three moves, had super strength by default and could tank anything that wasn’t the existential crisis he suffered when his energy bar got too low.
Iron Man was the GOAT. He could fly, had THREE projectiles, super strength, was exceptionally sturdy and could just set up a wall of pain that lasted for days without ever having to worry about recharging. Worse yet on some consoles his rockets had homing capability. Which was great. One of the easiest ways to shut him down was to use the Glass Cannon Magneto and lock him in the wall throw glitch. But in order for that to work you’d need to ensure he never got a shot off once.
Why even bother adding Human Torch or Spider-Man at all when Venom and Solara were far superior alternatives? It’s been nearly 20 years and all I have are more questions.

I bet it felt like it was YOUR thing. You were part of it since the beginning. You owned it all and read and played everything. It is a cool feeling, as it would be difficult to have the same thing with the X-Men, for example, as they were created on 1963.
I felt the same for Generation X, which was MY new team on 1994. I saw the cast appear on an X-Men event, then get their own comic, I had the whole series (except for one issue) and the annuals and specials. I am happy to say that, for the most part, Generation X was a better product than the Imperfects.

@@ElSandwich777I wonder if this is more design oversight, or the devs taking pity on people who quit the story mode and just wanted to box for free in versus without an arm and a leg tied behind their back for more of the Nintendo Hard mission objectives and decidedly unfair boss fights.

I didn't mind this game as a kid but going back to it... Holy crap!
The mix of up close and long range meant that Daredevil and Elektra throwing knives and their clubs could work from across the stage. In the 2 player mode it basically meant that the advantages range from which ones were able to lift cars and which ones had long range attacks. I don't remember if anyone had both but it basically meant if you picked a character who couldn't do either like Wolverine you'd be fighting a very uphill battle while your opponent would be spamming moves.

I loved this game as a kid, jank and all. It was just fun playing as such an absurd crossover of various Marvel Characters. Johnny Ohm's hover ability is broken as hell, in addition to the main imperfect Paragon just essentially being an invincibility code if you simply avoided being hit and connect all your attacks. And for the love of me I could never consistently pull off the finisher moves but of course, the computer made sure to make me look like a PUNK by flexing on me with moves that could literally disintegrate me.

    2. The 3rd Birthday. Parasite Eve is just a super slept on series imo, but the last entry did a lot to bury it. Wasn't totally without merit though.
    3. Hotline Miami 2. Easily the one I want the most, if for no other reason than to get more people talking about this game. It was kinda savaged when compared to the original, but has seen some positive resurgence over the years. To whomever reads this, if you've never played this game, this is an immediate must. The Imperfects had some interesting stories but there wasnt much done with them as characters, save for maybe Paragon and the main villain. And even then, it felt like they pushed the Marvel characters to the side in the end as we see them gathered together as a team, despite them never acting like a proper team. A shame as some good stuff could have been done in between all the missions.
Also the DS version is broken. I played it out of curiosity and the AI kept doing combos to a wall before I killed them.

The story mode sucked SO MUCH thanks to characters designed for one-on-one combat, meaning taking on lesser baddies was THE WORST since your attacks could only take on one maybe two minions while you where constantly getting swarmed by others in your weak spots... that is by the ones who DIDN'T use projectiles attacks from off screen thanks to the horrible camera! Even if you just focused on the vs mode, it got dull pretty fast.
