Hi. Your rubbing could be anything. I would try spinning the wheel while it’s up on the stand to see if anything stands out. I suppose the bearing is a possibility. How old is the bike? Try grasping the wheel as near to 12 o’clock and 6 o clock as you can and try to rock it. Any play may suggest bearings. Could be old brake pads making a grinding noise. If it happens when you are riding, it’s a small possibility that there is a nail or stone stuck in the tread.
Hi. Well, to be honest, I haven't had the front caliper off my bike. It's something I've been thinking about doing for a while though now as I want to see what the condition of the brake pads are. However It doesn't look too daunting a task. As long as you remember where everything you unbolt or remove goes, make a drawing or film or photograph while you are dismantling, AND you do not put ANY strain on the brake pipe flexible hose, you should be fine with it. Oh, and do not press the front brake lever while your caliper is off as you may then make the piston pop out of the caliper and then it becomes a bigger, more complex job.
