  • Let’s take a look at that Mega Man sprite from last week and see about giving it some more detail - it looks like there’s the foundation of a better sprite... we just need to take it a little further and find the right rendering style.

I could imagine if Mega Man had a dance club / disco level, you could put those new highlights on a new layer and have them fade in and out with the dance lights. Maybe even change colour in time with the music. 🪩

Tbh I always prefer colors in less saturated tones that are closer together and multi purpose
Not only it looks pretty but it can be considered to be impressive by some and on top of that it saves resources
Theorically, if you were to mod one of the og MegaMan to add these multipurpose versions, it would work except for some minor slowdown in some parts, since one layer of color doesn't update shape

    • @thetruered3d

It was a paradox as I didn't want to change the hue but wanted to make it brighter (which just isn't possible). I’ve been experimenting with the same things today - trying to find a middle ground between 3-color x2 size sprites and that overly-pillowed look, and also landed on a 9-color version as a decent starting point. Picotron’s alpha release has had me thinking of how to upscale sprites and also play around with adding color. 3-color versions look too flat, and while one cannot do photoshop tricks within Picotron the color palettes out there offer some good midway steps to choose from. I’m leaning hard into Picotron V4 on Lospec, currently (though I absolutely LOVE intense colors and am bucking against the trend towards desaturated palettes). Great content - I’d love to see you continue this experimentation and critical examination of spritework’s evolution beyond the arcade.
