Hey Brandon - highly recommend setting a keyboard shortcut for flip horizontal. I use it a tonne too and saves so much time. (Also have ones for flip vertical and 90 degree rotate). Great vid!
It kills me that I looked at the comparison between your pre-cleanup and post-cleanup Luke and was like "hold on the guy on the left is Anakin Skywalker isn't it?"
For your 10th anniversary of Luke sprite tests, I was thinking you could go for an infamously difficult sprite style that you've never discussed before. The Capcom VS SNK sprite style, this style is used for the SNK lineup of the roster along with Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, M. Bison (Dictator), and Akuma. It is inspired by the style seen in games such as the Street Fighter Alpha and Marvel VS Capcom series but is built around a 320x240 pixel canvas as opposed to a 382x224 pixel canvas. The light source is also purely from the top as opposed to being slightly to the front and the top. For other Capcom characters they automatically adjusted the Street Fighter Alpha (or in Morrigan's case, Darkstalkers sprites) to match the pixel canvas which looks a bit off. (Especially in Morrigan's case where the outline uses much darker shades than the Street Fighter Alpha or Capcom VS SNK sprites)
This series has become one of those events that make me think "whoa, it's already been another year"; it's been really fun and rewarding to see this year's progression! I also thought it was funny how it started shaping up to look like Anakin at first haha. The slightly more desaturated colours look really good in the lineup and it's awesome seeing the finalized sprite next to Vader from earlier 🤩 Excited to see what you'll cook up for the 10th entry in the series!!
Thanks man, pretty happy with how it shaped up given that it just started from the idea of "what if it was beeg?" 😆 Gonna have to take the year to consider something special for the 10th, maybe in the meantime I can dig out that wip sprite Anakin likeness and make that into it's own sprite 😅
I wanted to say how much it puts my mind at ease seeing you change the proportions around slightly when it comes to the Final Artwork section. It really helped me to not be worried about getting everything right first try in my own art. I love your videos, they've been a great source of inspiration.
This is definitely a matured version of your take on Luke's annual sprite! Really please with the final colour choice, light adjustment, etc. Keep inspiring us lot!
Very very cool, seeing them both together makes them look like a 90's beat em up game sprite. Like a Star Wars version of Golden axe or Streets of Rage.
Welcome to the 64px Club, Brandon, y'did good! Don't worry, I can tell you that you'll graduate to feeling like 96+px is out of your comfort zone at some point! >:3
Brandon you are the one who got me into pixle art so many years ago, i watch every single vid you made senes then. i don't know what to say man i just love your content so much
These videos have turned into a yearly tradition for me without me even realizing. Been watching for a couple years already, love catching these when they come out. Good video
Thanks! Yeah one of my favourite things in the past few years was experimenting with capturing different styles! Sometimes it makes it feel like I don't know what "my style" really is anymore, but maybe that's a style in itself 😅
I've been binging your videos. Your progress is so inspiring. Can't wait for this year's. I'm a beginner pixeler so the smaller sprites really appeal to me.
Cool! It's hard to believe it's already 2023 ending, I remember when you posted some of these earlier ones... Great job and have a great next year, Brandon!
Haha yeah this is always one of the things that makes me feel like the year is wrapping up, pretty nice tradition for the season - and thanks, happy holidays dude! ✌️☺️✨
Always looking forward to your videos Brandon, killed it as always. If you want to cut some time in your process in photoshop, you can make a copy of the current window and flip it so you always have a flipped version for reference, helps me out a lot when i forget to keep flipping ahah.
You knocked it out of the park, dude! There's much appeal in the subtle tapering to his limbs and the slightly oversized head. And I love the little warbles on the saber shaft - just adding some extra energy. Great work - thanks for sharing!
It's so interesting to me to watch how you do pixel art at the beginning. It's like chiseling out a solid block of pixels and sculpting its shape in passes. The way I do it is I sketch a pose drawing using a 1000x1000 px canvas and a thick brush and shrink it down to the canvas size I want. You'd be surprised at how well it works when it comes down to 64x64, because I just make an empty layer and trace with the pixels I want.
been watching your videos on and off pretty much ever since you started making them! I don't do much pixel art anymore, but your videos are always entertaining and quite informational on the medium. Here's to another year of making pictures out of tiny squares!
Watching your work inspires me to make my own pixel art again. When I was younger I used to make pixel art a lot more often, things like space ships, or landscapes. As I got older I slowly transitioned out of art all together but about a year or two ago I finally bit the bullet and bought aseprite and have been happily making pixel art gifs. Really appreciate you just sharing your content here on youtube it's a big motivator.
Hello there! It's difficult to describe how amazed I am with your work. I started my journey with pixel art a couple of weeks ago and I found in your art a big inspiration. Thank you!! Keep up the awesome job!
One way you could get more comfortable doing characters in larger resolution is tracing your small sprites scaled-up and adding increasing degrees of detail as the resolution increases
That was cool to see. The levels of refinement when seen in the animation amaze me. Also great to see you be able to critique and revise your own work so well. The flipping horizontal trick was also a beauty
You definitely should practice big detailed sprites like the ones in super metroid or street fighter, I can't imagine how cool that style would blend with your own style.
I have a Google Calendar reminder set to repeat on this day every year to check in on your latest video in this series, I hope you keep doing it! My first reaction to you not animating it was a bit of disappointment, but if it helped you get it out this year, then I'm glad you didn't to make it more manageable on you. Thanks for keeping this going!
I would love to see you do an old Luke from the new movies, maybe not for the end of year video but just in general. It's cool to see a character you like in different forms.
An awesome sprite to finish off the year! It reminds me of your sprite analysis of Spawn. Maybe next year you can do one of your style swaps and we can see Luke drawn in the style of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn the video game.
I've been working in a style where 1px - 1in so people being roughly 64px tall is on the shorter side, and it has forced a very different method of drawing characters for me, where I draw a lot of circle-nodes for joints first and connect them with curves to generate the first basic outline for a pose.
I think part of the reason that he started to veer more Anakin is because you originally gave him a more intense expression and even when Luke is serious he is a gentle type of serious. Luke is a soft boy.
its definitely interesting to me how with the megaman sprites you started out with you really went for details eyes, but as time went on you kept getting smaller with the faces. Kind of obvious since 2019 but idk now that you have this many examples I just find it interesting.
Next year how about have Luke in the Metal Slug style? If you want to make Luke even bigger how about Street Fighter 2 or The King Of Fighters style. The biggest though would be Art Of Fighting. I think that's around 150-200 pixels tall.
Hey Brandon - highly recommend setting a keyboard shortcut for flip horizontal. I use it a tonne too and saves so much time. (Also have ones for flip vertical and 90 degree rotate). Great vid!
Good luck with Mind Over Magnet!
Thanks! And yeah I should actually just set Cmd+T to flip horizontal, I think that tends to be my most used transform anyway 😅
The man himself in flesh!
the man himself comments
i just use the Aseprite default of Shift + H (and Shift + V for vertical)
It kills me that I looked at the comparison between your pre-cleanup and post-cleanup Luke and was like "hold on the guy on the left is Anakin Skywalker isn't it?"

@@BJGpixel Hahaha that'd be awesome!! A beeg happy Star Wars family 😄

It almost feels like a Lucasfilm Games/Lucasarts style sprite. Something like the Indiana Jones games and Monkey Island. Love that.
Very very cool, seeing them both together makes them look like a 90's beat em up game sprite. Like a Star Wars version of Golden axe or Streets of Rage.
May the force be with you
This is super cool, it's inspiring to see how much you've improved steadily over the years and the Luke vs Vader posing is incredible
Oh yes! It's that time of the year already! Great to see your idea of the same subject. So inspiring 😊
I love how it seems to have settled into being a December activity; very nice way to send the year off for me :D Happy Holidays dude!
@@BJGpixel and it look like people recognise this as well ☺
Merry Christmas Buddy! 🎅🎄

wow , your improvement is awesome! i like how every year is a different style which means u range is insanely wide! nice!
Thanks! Yeah one of my favourite things in the past few years was experimenting with capturing different styles! Sometimes it makes it feel like I don't know what "my style" really is anymore, but maybe that's a style in itself 😅
I think this is my favourite Luke, especially with how it looks next to the Darth Vader one which is my favourite work you've ever done. Great video 😊
Wow this is the best sprite yet! So awesome!
It’s a good day when there’s a new BJG video.
Flipping the sprite to check proportions is a great tip, I'll definitely be using that
Yay, a new video! Not very many people make pixel art. I do, and I'm glad that a TH-camr does! 🙂
I've been binging your videos. Your progress is so inspiring. Can't wait for this year's. I'm a beginner pixeler so the smaller sprites really appeal to me.
This sprite is too good, man! Well done! It feels like it could be a fighting game sprite
The fact I have been here from the 1st published video is insane. Keep at it!
i like how even though i might not be subscribed to this channel, i still manage to get these videos in my recommendation every year which is amazing
I swear you just did last year’s sprite, time flies. And great job on this one!
What a cool design this year. I looove this tradition, keep it up!!
The 2020 video was where I discovered your channel, always love this video each year
Its always SO cool to see this progression- this is I dare say a new favorite!
this is also the first sprite since 2019 that didn't involve animation or some sort of gimmick, which shows maturity and return to form
I've loved watching these each year. Such a fun little tracker of time and progress!
Looks fantastic
But you forgot Luke's mechanical hand!
Cool! It's hard to believe it's already 2023 ending, I remember when you posted some of these earlier ones...
Great job and have a great next year, Brandon!

I love your vids and your art style! I've been following you for a while and it's nice to see this tradition being kept :)
this is by far my favourite Luke sprite, so crisp and clean.
Always looking forward to your videos Brandon, killed it as always. If you want to cut some time in your process in photoshop, you can make a copy of the current window and flip it so you always have a flipped version for reference, helps me out a lot when i forget to keep flipping ahah.
Over time my bias has shifted towards small sprite size and limited palette (love 2022's!), but this one blew me away. Amazing work as always!
You knocked it out of the park, dude! There's much appeal in the subtle tapering to his limbs and the slightly oversized head. And I love the little warbles on the saber shaft - just adding some extra energy. Great work - thanks for sharing!
Been following for the last few years, and really enjoy seeing this come around again. This one might be my favorite Luke so far!
bro that looks AMAZING - the lightsaber glow is epic
Another amazing Skywalker sprite! Always enjoy seeing your videos in the notifications!
this is something I look forward to every year

Can't believe I've been watching since about 2020. Amazing video!!!
To see all of your progress, it's magic!
I think it's the best luke skywalker sprite you've ever made, amazing.
My favorite tiny square channel
I think this is my new favorite from the lineup! great work as always man
Loved this one!! Might be my favorite of the series. :D
Hello there! It's difficult to describe how amazed I am with your work. I started my journey with pixel art a couple of weeks ago and I found in your art a big inspiration. Thank you!! Keep up the awesome job!
Sir, thank you for being yourself in your content! Your pixel art journey heavily inspired mine! Always watch your annual sprite redraws!
I was having a feeling a new Skywalker Pixel Art video would come out for a few days now, I look forward to it every year now!
I love this tradition!! Happy holidays :D
Great add on to the yearly tradition, looking forward to next year's projects!
Been following you for years, here's to another great year!
One way you could get more comfortable doing characters in larger resolution is tracing your small sprites scaled-up and adding increasing degrees of detail as the resolution increases
I always look forward to seeing your Luke every year. Reminds me I need to get back into the pixel art game.
Your skill skyrocketed in the last year! Damn thats a good luke skywalker
Awesome job this year! I can totally see you comparing your future ones back to this one in the upcoming years.
I find it truly admire how you find a way to innovate this project every year.
Wow, the final piece looks great! I'm definitely looking forward to next years design.
That was cool to see. The levels of refinement when seen in the animation amaze me. Also great to see you be able to critique and revise your own work so well. The flipping horizontal trick was also a beauty
Always look forward to these
I live for this video every year
i look forward to this video every year! great tradition. i think this one and 2021's are my favorites.
Same hier the one from 2021 looks so great
I love the hair and the face of this years rendition
This work is amazing. It calls my attention how you have kept the Megaman pose all these years.
Wow thats really cool! Probably my favorite one yet! You should make a piece based on Scott Pilgrim, I think that would be cool!
I'm calling it.
Next year's Luke will be a 3D picoCAD drawing.
This is easily my favorite one so far!
You definitely should practice big detailed sprites like the ones in super metroid or street fighter, I can't imagine how cool that style would blend with your own style.
this ones so prettyyy

this is awesome bro!
Watching you work really make me want to pick up my pen and do some pixel art. Gives me that itch.
Brandon, Brandon, Brandon i love your pixel art work!!! ❤
Damn it’s really that time of the year again
Tenth anniversary! Battle between Vader and Luke!!
I would love to see you do an old Luke from the new movies, maybe not for the end of year video but just in general. It's cool to see a character you like in different forms.
Been waiting on this one.
I think this year’s sprite is my fav so far!
An awesome sprite to finish off the year! It reminds me of your sprite analysis of Spawn. Maybe next year you can do one of your style swaps and we can see Luke drawn in the style of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn the video game.
Fitting that it started out looking like Anakin
Super cool! One day I want to make good pixel art like you
2020 is my favourite, it looks so cool! 2021 reminds me of Fire Emblem
looks very cool
I've been working in a style where 1px - 1in so people being roughly 64px tall is on the shorter side, and it has forced a very different method of drawing characters for me, where I draw a lot of circle-nodes for joints first and connect them with curves to generate the first basic outline for a pose.
I think the glowing effect would be so cool if you made this an animated sprite and the glow moved with the sword
TIL I've been watching the channel for 3 years
5:46 I prefer using glow blending option for this stuff because it kinda of adds that occlusion, a choice of style tho
For the anniversary, you have to do an aging animation, of course! (including his Force spirit as transition) [/Force persuasion]
For the 10 year anniversary, you should do an ensemble of them watching the suns set on Tatooine.
"me and the boys watching the sunsets, back where it all started" 😎
@@BJGpixel Have you ever done a pixelated self portrait before? Maybe that can be Year 10: Luke Skywalker, sat at a laptop making pixel art.
Wake up babe. Brandon just did this year's Luke sprite
I think part of the reason that he started to veer more Anakin is because you originally gave him a more intense expression and even when Luke is serious he is a gentle type of serious. Luke is a soft boy.
i’m surprised that it’s been a year since last time! it feels like just yesterday!

I quite like the Metal Slug idea, that'd be a fun one to explore with animation too!
Aw yeah!
