  • Super Mario Maker 2 is a level designer tool for the mario series and for the most part, every element in the game is faithfully brought over from their original title. However, there are some items like power-ups, enemies, bosses, and more that have actually changed from how they originally appeared in either super mario bros, super mario bros 3, super mario world, new super mario bros u, or super mario 3d world. So in today's video I want to look at all of the differences and changes I could find in super mario maker 2’s item selection, while also giving my input as to what changes I like and which I didn’t.     I'd like to see a video about style-specific changes between items, like how Dry Bones in World is able to throw bones, but not in any other style.

    In my opinion, mario's frog suit should be red no matter what. In single player toad and toadette both have color coded frog suits but mario does not. It pisses me off.

      Nintendo probably made it like that because (Blue) Toad & Toadette just didn't even exist back in 1988.

      @@FusionCyborg Well, Toad actually did have a frog suit in an episode of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3. Same story with Peach (known as Princess Toadstool back then). And I’m pretty sure the episode was The Ugly Mermaid

    3:44 technically speaking, Nintendo simply made the Goombas share the color pallete with the Ground, which is why they look different Underground and in Castles.
    Nintendo didn't technically do this on purpose, and they don't consider this to be a serious design choice they want to keep. Or so I assume.

      No. SMB1 Goombas shares palettes with Buzzy Beetles, bullet bills and bloopers.
      The ground palette looks the same only in overworld theme and in castle theme, but it´s actually a completely different palette, this can be seen specially in underwater levels, where the ground is green and black but the goombas are white black and gray.

      Also, it's confirmed in some games that the Goombas you see in caves are actually a separate variant called Gloombas, mostly seen in the Paper Mario games (ik those aren't "canon" but they share all the same characteristics with the cave goombas) so by that logic it almost makes sense they weren't present in MM2

      they had the pallette change in smas smb1, and the snes was definitely capable of having a seperate pallete for them

      The Bone Goombas from NSMB2 used the blue coloration intentionally, iirc Goombas from that game also changed blue underground, I’m not sure why Nintendo only brought that back with that game and no where else

    In SMB1, the goomba palette swap actually also happens with all the other enemies (Except red koopas and podoboos)

    Fun Fact: The blue Goombas are unused in SMM1, also Yoshi's arms being orange was fixed in the PAL version of SMW

      I'm pretty sure Yoshi's arms are still orange in the PAL version. They were fixed for the GBA port though.

      I feel like they were stirrups that were "fixed" to become arms, the same way Yoshi's saddle became a turtle shell.

    9:55 the fruit change did have a mechanical function, if you ate them with Yoshi whilst they were fruity then you would get a powerup.

    The P Balloon is so much funner in SMM2. I recently replayed SMW, and the way the P Balloon feels in that game is so sluggish. No wonder Tubular feels so frustrating.

    12:43 I think that a contributing factor was how players in multiplayer used the shells to kill the other players, and by having the shell able to be entered, it would've caused a lot more pain as the players would've been able to hold onto the shell more

    11:25 another thing changed about charbarghs is that they used to spawn periodicly in a set position following the same movement while in SMM2 the position they atack from as well as the way they do it is random.

    Rolling long jump wasn't in 3d world on the Wii u, and I think Mario maker 2 came out before the switch port of 3d world

    6:09 it was a technical thing, the SNES uses a similar 8x8 tile system for characters to the NES, I bet they forgot somewhere in the lines of code for the palette the arm sprite was using.

    3:59 the frog suit is a pretty fun item and can be used for unique platforming challenges

      odyssey doesn't like the frog suit and I know why because it doesn't work well in most of the game's level themes so please be nice to odyssey about the frog suit in super Mario maker 2.

    The real reason Small Mario can crouch is so he can do the animation at the end of the level where if for whatever reason he fails to properly execute the level ending animation, he turns away and crouches in disappointment

    You forgot to mention that in smb1 & smw when you get hit with a fire flower/cape you don't go down to small Mario. Very very welcome change

    the clear pipe thing is a good-bad change. It's a good change that you can pass other objects in pipes, because there's no branching paths, but it's a bad change because you can't branch paths. it would have been much more interesting to let players navigate a 2D web of pipes in order to avoid obstacles in them, then have the clear pipes we have which are almost glorified doors

    I wish that blue and yellow Koopa Troopas would return for Super Mario Maker 3.
    Their presence alone would help to give more variety in terms of enemy palette, so we wouldn't just have the usual green and red Koopas. Also, imagine if in at least the SMW and SM3DW styles they would be updated to have their original behavior from SMW, thus making all the Koopas turn Beach Koopas upon being hit, then they would either try to return to their shells, or would just kick them away, or they would become Kamikaze Koopas, and become an actual danger to the player, like in the original SMW.
    In short, it would be a small addition, that would still add so much. (HECK, Beach Koopas DID return for SM3DW... there is no excuse to have them not return in SMM3).
    Similiarly, Blue and Yellow Yoshis can return, as separate variants, that have their unique powers from SMW... like what happened to the Red Yoshi variant.

    The crouch change while being small is actually pretty usefull, in some speedrun levels you can use It to crouch under piranha plants, for example

    I'm pretty sure the original SMW Bowser looked weird and green because of technical limitations, so the different pallet was inevitable

      And only ingame Bowser was "normal" in SMB3

    You missed out on a ton of things.
    I’ll mention some of them just to be pedantic.
    •Hammer bros won’t chase you after some time in the SMB style.
    •Fire piranha plants look different in the SMB3 style.
    •When a P switch is hit, munchers won’t turn into coins in the SMB3 style.
    •Bullet bills and boos are significantly slower in the first 3 game styles. At least you can give wings to boos to emulate their original speed.
    •Bullseye bills will now chase you on the X and Y axis in the SMB3 style, as opposed to just the X axis.
    •Spike balls thrown by spikes in the SMB3 style will roll if they touch the ground at any point.
    •Blooper nannies won’t throw their babies at you in the SMB3 or NSMBU styles.
    •You can’t pick up large Koopa shells in the SMB3 style.
    •Big goombas will split into 2 in the SMB3 style.
    •Bob-ombs can blow up blocks in the SMB3 style. (Super useful change, honestly.)
    •SMB2 Mario can’t stand on Pokeys.
    •Lakitu clouds can be ridden in in SMB and SMB3. You also don’t need Yoshi or a fire flower to steal them in SMW.
    •You can get a shoe goomba’s shoe by killing it normally in the SMB3 style. In the original game, you had to kill it on a brick block.
    •Magikoopas can now also be killed by fireballs in the SMW style.
    •Chain chomps are now attached to a pole, not a hard block, in the SMB3 style.
    •Many other things in the SMW style such as podoboos, On/Off switches, colored pipes, the Koopalings, snake blocks, etc were either recolored or retextured entirely. I should also mention how hammer bros look nothing like Amazing Flying Hammer Bros. Not even the same shading technique.
    •Monty Moles no longer leave a mark wherever they pop out of the ground.
    •The P Balloon uses the pokey palette, whereas it used the monty mole palette in the original game. It also no longer functions on a timer. (I hate both changed, personally.)
    •Fish bones will now chase the player in the SMW style.
    •The tips of skewers are much flatter than in the original SMW and NSMBU.
    •Parabombs and parachuting galloombas no longer face the screen as they fall. They just look in one direction, kicking their feet up and down.
    •NSMBU has the same spin jumping rules as SMW (How did you not mention this?)
    •Fire piranha plants retain their normal behavior in the SMW style, instead of jumping as they did in the original game.
    •Many items and objects glow now, like P switches, POW blocks, keys, and Wendy’s Rings.
    •Rocky wrench wrenches use a different design in the NSMBU style (This used to not be the case in SMM1 until the 1.4 update. Such a useless change, in my opinion.)
    •Boo buddies no longer make silly faces. All of the boos in a circle have the same expression. (Kind of boring, in my opinion.)
    •Hitting a dry bones on a ? block or brick will kill it in the NSMBU style. In the original game, this would’ve just caused it to crumble.
    •Hitting a spiny on a ? block or brick block in the SMB style will cause it to turn on its back. In the original, the slimy would’ve just jumped a bit when you did this.
    •Green cheep cheeps no longer chase you in the NSMBU game style.
    •You can slide kill piranha plants and spinies.
    •You can’t slide on seesaws in the NSMBU style.
    •Boom Boom will do his spike flashing thing in the NSMBU style, which he didn’t do in the original game.
    •Koopas, spinies, and bob-ombs won’t chase you in the 3D World style.
    •Hop chops act completely different in the 3D World style. Now, you can just bounce of their heads, instead of in the original where you had to kill then to see which one would turn into a trampoline.
    •Twisters act completely differently in the SMB3 style, and have a cloud creature at the bottom to cue where they are.
    •The angry sun was nerfed in the SMB3 style. It doesn’t hit where the player is at, but rather just moves to the other side of the screen.
    •Snow pokies in the 3D World style only drop one snowball. (This change was probably to make them fit in more with 2D)
    •Propeller boxes can now be used 3 times before landing. Mario will now also sport a red box while wearing one, not an orange one.
    •Red POWs can’t float like in the original. (Awful change.) And, you can carry them.
    •You can now carry P switches in all styles beside SMB.
    I probably missed a lot too, to be fair. I just tried to list of all of the main ones.

      a lot more:
      •grey cheep cheeps were changed to green cheep cheeps due to no palette limitations, and work entirely differently too.
      •the nighttime palette was changed drastically in SMB1
      •NSMBU enemies no longer dance to the music :(
      •Cannon Boxes and Propeller Boxes no longer need to be collected from a question mark block
      •10 coin blocks no longer turn into a wearable coin box in the 3dw style
      •blasters sport an entirely different look in the 3d world style
      •cat banzai bills were completely removed, despite homing banzai bills being added to every other style. and banzai bills cannons can only face forward, and act like the other styles if facing other directions.
      •stars can now defeat charvarrghs
      •parabones can lose their wings in the 3d world style, as opposed to the really annoying originals
      •skipsqueaks were changed DRASTICALLY, from staying in place on moving platforms, to being moved by them, and they now always run towards their original positions when moved.
      •big boos move much faster in smm2
      •lifts in 3d world act like the ones in SMB1, while they act like the other styles in SMM2, aswell as having a new look
      •donut blocks no longer look curved at the bottom (no clue why this was changed)
      •you can pick up boxes in smm2, whereas in 3d world they are stationary, and can be fireballed
      •p switches were changed in the 3d world style to better fit the other styles, turning from a stationary button to a movable switch
      •key coin's appearances were changed from orange to red/pink in the 3d world style, to better fit the other styles
      •spikes in 3dw no longer throw spiked rollers (the wiki says so), and now throw spike balls like the other styles
      •you can no longer stand on big buzzy beetles in the nsmbu style, to [again] fir the other styles better
      •none of the koopalings work like the originals, except for lemmy (excluding his appearances in NSMBU and SMW)
      •yoshi can eat fish bones in the NSMBU style, and spits out bones when spit out
      •there are no big icicles, and they do not act as semisolids when falling in smm2
      •big wigglers cannot stand in poison anymore
      •flying galoombas have their feet color changed in smm2 (another weird change)
      •magikoopas in the smw style can now turn hard blocks and ice blocks to items and enemies, instead of only flip-blocks
      •monty moles in the NSMBU style can now be placed in the ground in smm2, and vice versa to SMW without them in the ground
      •parachuted enemies in the smw style no longer face the camera before landing (sad change, removed the charm to parachutes)
      •fireballed enemies no longer produce coins in the NSMBU, 3DW and SMW styles
      •collecting p balloons now award points
      •vines cannot bring you to sub-areas in any style
      •checkpoints no longer always award mario with a mushrooms in any style (also changed from smm1)
      •switches cannot reveal hidden blocks/make them appear
      •skull rafts now fall in the SMW style (and all other styles, to an extent)
      •bob-ombs launched from cannons no longer explode on their own (did not know this was in smb3)
      •chain chomp stumps look different in the SMB3 style than the original
      •green cheep cheeps can now jump in the SMB3 style
      •missile bills now follow mario completely, instead of only turning around once if it misses (added from original comment)
      •red piranha plants now only have one leaf segment, and the green ones with one segment are completely absent (SMB3)
      •Platforms look different in the SMW style, no longer being (seemingly) made out of wood
      •sledge brothers have yellow skin in smm2's smb3 style, looking more similar to the hammer bros.
      •spikes are colored a bit darker than the original in the SMB3 style
      •stretches can be placed anywhere, as opposed to only platforms, and have a different color palette, matching the boos
      •thwomps are no longer blue in the SMB3 style
      •winged green koopas can no longer fly back and forth in the SMB1 Style

    13:13 Absolutely correct me if I'm wrong, as I have no way of knowing for sure. Wasn't the rolling long jump added in the switch port with Bowser's Fury? And of course by then, Nintendo had pretty much given up of MM2, so they wouldn't have much of a reason to add a new feature to just a spinoff game.

    The pokey's taking on a fruity appearance in NSMBU actually had a utility. Yoshi could eat them in while they were fruit-like (Something he cannot do otherwise) and it will count towards his fruit counter, meaning that if the pokey is tall enough Yoshi can create a power-up super easily. Each pokey head counts for a separate fruit so it is a huge thing

    You forgot that in MM2 Mario 3 can grab shells from the top, you can now spin on spiky enemies in Mario U style, and the cat power up had a change of controls between the two games.

    *Here are the downgrades that I would bring back for SMM3:*
    You can slide down slopes in SMB1.
    All players are different colors with the Master Sword and Frog Suit.
    Goombas would be blue in *all* the darker themes in SMB1.
    All different shell effects when Yoshi eats them would be back.
    Mario would have another power up with the P Balloon.
    You can spin jump on Boos, Lava Bubbles, grinders, and spike traps, among other things.
    Bowser would have his original appearance when you put him in a Clown Car in SMW.
    Pokeys and Snokeys would BAH into fruit.
    You can wall jump straight after propelling, and spin jump right into a squirrel glide.
    You can roll right into a boosted long jump in SM3DW, and spin inside shells.
    The empty space in the game selections would be FILLED(with SM3DL)!

      3DL is cool but I think they'd go for a more different one, and maybe would add 3DL features in 3DW style
      Mario 64 or Galaxy would be the most likely, or maybe something complitely different like Paper Mario 3

    Good way to replace is add Blue Koopa that Mario can acturry enter his sheel (base on Blue Shell from NSMB)

      That wouldn't really be good game design considering there would have to be something that tells the player why there's a difference. If anything, if they made it so Normal Koopa Troopas didn't exit their shells upon being stomped, and added a version that did, and you could then ride their shells, that would prevent the main issue I imagine is why they just left it out completely. So people can still have Koopa Troopas in a level without having to consider people using their shells.

    One thing I think you should have added to NSMBU section is that when you touch the flagpole, the characters don’t do their little victory pose they would always do in the original game and also the BAHs are nonexistent which leads to enemies not doing little dances anymore.

    As the tanooki tail has always been one of my favorite powerups, I noticed that now it refills its P-meter if you bounce on an enemy while flying with it, leading to unique flight levels with their own mechanic different from those of the cape, balloon, acorn, or propeller hat. Without this change (and the combat buff to match the cape's interaction with Dry Bones), the leaf would just be an inferior version of the cape.

    The real reason small Mario can crouch in the Super Mario Bros. style is because in the first Super Mario Maker, all the Mario mystery mushroom costumes allowed him to crouch, and it would be weird to leave out the actual Mario.

    A lot of Mario U content was changed because the game's entire visual style had to be converted to work as pre-rendered sprites, unlike the original which actually used 3D models.

      Nope. A colored Yoshi would gain both the ability of his color and the ability of the shell's color. If a Blue Yoshi ate a Red Shell he would be able to fly and shoot fireballs instead of spitting back the Shell

    there are some changes about the mentioned items you didn’t mention
    the P-balloon can’t stomp enemies anymore (probably a needed nerf since you can fly everywhere)
    in new super Mario bros U you couldn’t spin jump on spiky enemies at all. In mario maker you can
    the chavargh chase you now in mario maker2 where in 3dworld they just jump once
    the twomps instakill in 3d world but in 3d world they don’t (3d land didn’t either)

    Another thing left off on the SMB3 airships is that the Bullet Bills fly straight, intead of lowering and raising with the screen. that way, if it fires from a place one block higher than where you're standing, you might not be safe

    I don't know if it was present in SMM1, but in SMM2 being able to crouch as small mario probably does matter in terms of multiplayer! I don't know for certain if it happens in every theme (don't have the game myself, just watch gameplay of it, so someone could back me up or correct me) but your interactions with other players change based on whether you're crouching or not, most commonly the jump height if they bounce on your head. as a result you'd need to be able to crouch at any size to make sure you always have the chance to deny giving an opponent uppies

    Fun Fact for Super Mario 3D World: The Super Bell was completely butchered in SMM2. In 3D World, the cat dive was mapped to the claw button, which allowed the player to breeze through levels fast. In SMM2, the cat dive was instead mapped to the shoulder button, ultimately making the power-up awkward to use.

    Another change for Mario 1 is that you can now bounce off enemies with a full jump by holding the jump button while landing on them, something that wouldn’t show up in the series until The Lost Levels.

    One other thing you are missing is bowser in new super Mario bros u. He was much bigger on the final boss fight and also you can hit him on the head or the shell with bowser Junior’s Koop a troopa clown car! And he would act like a three phase fighter whereas in Mario maker he gets 20 hits with the Mario’s fireballs to kill him and 40 hits when increased in size with a super mushroom!

    Mario Maker gave Buzzy Beetles a new sprite for the Super Mario Bros. 3 style. In the original SMB3 they used their SMB1 sprite with a different palette.

    The color of the underground goombas in SMB1 is probably due to hardware restrictions. All the blocks change colors except question blocks and Mario, and they share the same color as the ground/blocks

      To be fair the Hammer Suit is literally just an alternate Fire Flower that's more powerful, while the Frog Suit had a unique style of gameplay (Water-based, and only 2 other powerups in mainline games are water-based as well.) compared to the other 3 powerups introduced in SMB3.

    Now here’s what I would ADD into SMM3:
    Beach, Mountain, Volcano, Tower, and even a Toadhouse theme with all the current ones.
    A night theme for SM3D World and Land.
    Bring back every Terrain, Item, Enemy, and Gizmo from every original game(and some new ones).
    Story Mode might be inside of Course World(with only completely new levels), along with every current feature(and some new ones).
    Player select: Mario, Luigi,(you can choose what kind of)Toad, Toadette, Wario, Waluigi,(you can choose what kind of)Kong, and Nabbit.

    One thing kind of overlooked on the ducking aspect with SM1 (and I think even SM3) is that ducking even while small allows you to avoid some hits. In the original SMB1, you couldn't duck and had to take the hit. And I think in SMB3, while you could duck, but it didn't lower your hit box any.
    Regarding being able to enter a shell in 3DW, I can see the logic as to why they got rid of it. Basically anytime you added a koopa to a level, this mechanic was now going to be possible. I'm guessing it could probably be used for some crazy exploits that would completely ruin the actual purpose of putting a koopa in your level. So as cool as those exploits might have been, it probably was 'for the best' to keep the game as true to the original spirit as they could. (Although I'm sure there was also a cost associated with it as it would be just one more thing to custom program for that game mode.)

    They didn’t just remove the Pokey becoming a fruit when the bah comes up. They removed ALL OF THE BAH ENEMY AND OBJECT ANIMATIONS (like the Koopa dance and the mushroom hop) I know it’s to blend in with the other styles, but seriously, THEY LITERALLY TOOK EVERYONE’S SOUL AWAY IN THAT STYLE AND NOW THEY JUST DO DEPRESSING AND BLAND ENEMY AND OBJECT THINGS.
