- On this episode, we discuss how to strip paint from your car in the most effective and efficient method. This was performed on my AMMO Porsche 964. The preparation process before painting is just as important as the actually spraying of paint. The car will only look as good as the metal, sanding, and prepping will allow. The most impressive sign of professionalism here is the practised way that he swaps from one task to another without wasting time to wait for things to dry/cure/strip etc.
radred609 yeah that's part of the industry. Time is money. I'm constantly doing bodywork on 2-3 cars at a time while something dries on one car or whatever. Sitting around doesn't get the job done
Only home garage hobbyists "wait for things to dry". There's always something else to do in a garage shop.

I am a (stereotypical) German perfectionist, but even I wouldn't have put that much effort into it. Your love to this car and your OCD to make it absolutely perfect is insane. And great fun to watch.

I used to work in a bodyshop that is owned by British guy, the attention to detail was just as equal and unless you have worked in this business people don't understand. He would always say, painting over dents is a waste of paint so he would fix the smaller imperfection cause he hates painting something with $500 paint only to see a little ding or dent.

Too bad that most "bare metal restorations" end up creating more problems than they solve. Any good, experiienced body man will tell you that the best "primer" for a new paint job is a sanded down factory paint job that's left as intact as possible. Modern "safe" paints, primers etc and a spray booth and HVLP gun can't duplicate factory results as far as getting good primer everywhere it needs to be on a partically assembled car and any paint job is only as good as the prep. When there are dents and dings or even small rust areas, its still best to work only the areas that absolutely need it so you leave as much paint/primer depth around it so that you don't have to match repaired/replaced bare metal/filler to "perfect" bare metal. If you leave as much of the original paint and primer as possible all you have to do is BUILD UP the paint and primer over the repaired area to "flush" with the remaining finish and then lightly sand all of it down smooth. If you're not going to take the whole thing apart and media-blast (baking soda blasting is amazing) and start all over to do the WHOLE paint job right, there's no sense taking the most easily refinished areas down to bare metal to start over. This is pretty much a hack job all the way around, as evidenced by the "body technician" not even bothering to get factory assembly manuals or information to know how the car is put together and what materials are used. He tried to remove something glued on that ended up being molded in and then said fuck it and hacked it off to glue on another piece. Suckers like you are the wet dream of hacks like him.
Anybody that calls THAT hack job "perfectionist" should be reading a dictionary instead of trying to play psychologist and explain OCD to people. Which, by the way, you also kind of failed at. OCD isn't limited to or even evidenced by IMPULSIVE behavior like doing things "repeatedly" and OCD has nothing to do with "perfectionism", which is actually a NEGATIVE personality trait and a highly self-destructive one and./or destructive to those around the "perfectionist". Especially when a lot of "perfectionism" is PROJECTED ONTO OTHERS while being unachieved by the "perfectionist". And there are different definitions of "perfectionist". Doing something "perfectly" is a good thing when perfection is required. Such as brain surgery. And when its demanded by and delivered by the same person with no negative effects on others. Bad "perfectionism" is of the "do as I say, not as I do" variety and the "perfectionist" will often only demand perfection from others in situations that don't require it and/or its impossible to achieve. Which is most situations. Or they'll insist on doing something perfectly because they know, if only subconsciously, it upsets someone else, causes them discomfort in some way or just keeps them from going somewhere or doing something they'd much rather be doing besides waiting on "perfection". In reality, OCD is very rarely the "repetition" thing and when it does happen its mainly a coping mechanism or stalling tactic while they resolve the "disagreement" between their rational thoughts and desire to be "normal" and their "irrational" and supposedly "abnormal" urges. By and large, so-called "mental illness" is a giant crock of psuedo-scientific bullshit. There is no such thing as "normal" or "abnormal" behavior and no person ever behaves consistently for any significant length of time. The brain never stops learning and the mind never stops growing and even things like "depression" can be "positives" for the "depressed" person if slowing down and not being wound up and hyperactive and stressed to the max until they're exhausted and then crashing to recover was "normal" but led them to....depression. The only perfection possible is in our minds when we do what we want to do and accomplish what we want to accomplish and don't let others "psychoanalyze" us and tell us that we're not "normal" simply because we're not what they think we should be. Which usually is actually what THEY think THEY should be or ARE and have their OWN issues with and would like to work around THAT by just having someone else validate them by agreeing with their assessment and being "normal" for them.

This is why a proper paintjob is expensive. Im a DYIer, and this will be very helpful to me on painting future projects. Glad to see there are bigger perfectionists then myself 👍

same here never been interested in cars and then about a year and a half ago youtube started bombarding me with all these restore related posts. especially like Barn Find Hunter/ Hagerty - this channel and whatever else pops up pretty much. got into rust valley restorers and am mad for the whole patina vintage car thing - and now wish I had the knowledge to do all this work myself. anyway about two weeks back I put a deposit down on a 1963 Chrysler Valiant AP5 Wagon Push Button Auto - It'll probably cost me a fortune to get others to do the work but FK it, you only live once..

I'm sure it sounds weird to most people, but watching this series helps my ocd. Most of the time I try to ignore my ocd, but sometimes I get overwhelmed and I need an outlet. Usually that means playing a game like factorio where I can lay everything down perfectly. However, I'm a real human being that is also a car enthusiast, namely towards an mk3 supra. I've got a '91 with the rare shadow grey interior, rare factory sunroof, was a factory turbo car with the r154 manual transmission. Mine is special because it has a 1jzgte swap from a jza70 half cut. My ultimate goal for the car is to turn it into a show car style of detail, but drive it every weekend, long trips, and the occasional track day and autocross. I want a restoration and paint job exactly like this. Rewatching this series made me realize I'll feel more complete as a human being if I can pathologically restore my car making absolutely every detail perfect. I really respect that ultimately this car got a clear bra over the entire car so you can use it without feeling guilty and obsessing over every little bump, rock, or bird poop. All cars are meant to be used, some meant to be enjoyed, and some are meant to be art. When you can use, enjoy, and gaze at your pride and joy... there's no greater feeling (at least to me). 😊
wow I'm seriously impressed by the amount of care he has for the bodies he works on. I'm sure he sustains this level of professionalism even when he isn't being filmed.

Im a car guy. I've done mods to my own car. I've cleaned and polished my own car plenty of times but I didn't realize how much I didn't know until finding your channel. I love learning all this new information!!!

One of my restorations had 11 coats of paints when it came in. After a couple of days we gave up on the stripper and went with coarse discs on larger grinders. That was something I'd never seen before. It was so thick the door edges were chipping the fenders when they opened.
The sheer effort put forth in this video blows my mind

The first minute I've found a few ideas that are awesome... The plastic over the paint stripper stops it from drying prematurely and could be used fro stripping paint on wood furniture also.... and that mixing tray is genius whoever thought of that.

True. Imagine having rock chips on this beautiful car, or even worse, someone smashing into him. On the other hand, I don't want this car to become a garage queen (and that's probably Larry's opinion as well). So my recommendation would be: Keep driving it, but don't race it. Get another cheap 964, and turn it into a hardcore race car, with roll cage, livery etc.

Kiera, a good paint job is $5-$6k this is more like $40-$70k
I wouldn't paint one for $1500. Depending on the color I've seen a qt of basecoat cost $350. Just a strip and paint I would have charged $10,000-$15,000 for this one.
George has the level of focus and determination I desire to have.
I think those extra steps that most people would simply skip is the mark of a man who loves his job and loves cars thus wants to make them last for as long as possible. Its super admirable and I hope he's making a killing in his career

this is relaxing my grandpa owned a shop until the day he died a couple years ago (almost 90 years old) and my dad owned a shop and a restoration business so its nice seeing it all again so many hours sanding for them lol anyway awesome video

It's a 3 week job which is quite materials intensive. I guess it's definitely not cheap. I also guess someone else could have done it cheaper but that George guy seems worth every extra penny.
it varies a lot, most body shops dont just work on a single car at a time. My family has 3 shops that we own and to do a similar job of just sanding, basic repair, and painting without any major body work will run around 8 thousand.

I've done this before to my old 280z when I was stripping all the paint off. Was really satisfying to do honestly. It's a lot of fun to just kinda scrape all the paint off and have bare metal left behind.
He does good work but never do what he did without protective eye ware at 6:57 min. with that wire wheel. The little bits of wire will go flying off and puncture your eyes. Shop safety is most important.

Fun fact did you know the acid that is used to clean concrete off of equipment was first discovered in the human eye?
I used to use the grinder wheel in shop class without safety glasses half the time because it would shoot everything down, then my optometrist said there were tiny little rust spots and debris on my contacts and that’s probably why they were drying out quicker than usual. That was enough of a wake up call.

You know you've worked really hard for your money when you're in pain watching your car being stripped. It also shows some serious love for it as well.
I work at a bodyshop and when you start removing paint in front of a customer, they get super nervous and sometimes ask you why your doing it.

There are people who do their job for sustenance or money, and then there are people like George who are basically in a flow with what he does. Such a mindful, handy and efficient worker!

If you don't want problems with the EPA, there's now an environmental friendly paint stripper that still does the job really good.
it had this paint stripper called bill hirsch from eastwood company many years ago. Came in spraycans. Is that the same chemical used? It was also very agressive agent , banned in europe by their ridicilous environment policy

It's most likely not he same considering how strong methylene chloride is I don't see why they would put it in a spray can where the spray cap wouldn't melt (assuming it is plastic)
Here in the states, the use of methylene chloride has been banned in most states and now we use whatever the environmentally friendly stuff is, I have not bothered to search what the chemical composition is. I'll do that and get back to you so you can use it, it's pretty good.
ok thanks for feedback. It is ( was ) a agressive sort of paintstripper but just checked and it is not available anymore. The stuff came as for brushing on surface or as i had, in earosol or spraycans .
What we have in europe ( holland ) is crap, expensive ca. 35 € (45$ gallon), i used it as i did not know, but never again.
Just like the surface metal primer we had back in the days. Called red lead primer. The best there was, but due to environment policy, banned years ago. We've got all the water ( acrylic ) based shit that wont cut it.
Sidney Isais what is the name of the environmental paint stripper used for autobody work? And the best bumper materials for fixing a bumper that won't cost too much money. It just has to be touched up spot area painted the entire bumper doesn't need painting.

a$$ job on my front bumper area; is starting to feather & crack. It's only been 3 yrs, driven only on occasion, & garages full time. Smh
I paint racing helmets, only one at a time, and this is the level of detail I strive for.
I'm building a post apocalyptic car and I've been trying to strip the paint off of it for months, it's a lot harder than you would think if you don't have the right tools. This video was actually really helpful! It's also kind of amazing to watch a true master at his craft doing his work at the highest level. I wish more people thought this way, the things we could build and create would be completely different.

Daniel, this is an absolute waste of time and money. I could replace every rotted panel and use almost no body filler much faster and cheaper. To add to that the paint process at Ammo is very inefficient, they waste a shit ton of material. You shouldnt need that many steps to get flawless paint unless the guy doing the prep sucks.
The paint he's using is from a German company it's their "Basic" black runs about $400 a gallon.
Rovid, I understand this, but I don't understand $1000 dollar computers and TVs. Just depends what you enjoy in life, what your willing to put your time and money into.
I was painting my bike and the paint remover went through my gloves and hit my hands, after a few minutes I lost feeling in my fingertips for about a month

I work as a car stripper and I have to remove the paint from the car before I do anything else and it is so satisfying to just watch the paint lift off the car and if I could I would just watch it for hours at a time

I’m very concerned about the part where they used the paint stripper without eye wear and respirator. That stuff contains methylene chloride which is extremely dangerous. Look it up. Several have died from using it.
Yeah seriously. Dude is an idiot with a death wish! If I saw one of my employee's doing this in the shop they'd be up for a dismissal. Shop safety is paramount and this shit can literally give you a one way ticket to terminal cancerville.
I'm repainting my car right now... in the prep stages but this makes me want to restart fully and go from the ground up and do it right. Thanks... I'm happy and mad about it.
