  • Learn to glide, then learn to ride! Pedals off, learn to balance, then pedals on. Additional drills included. Fast, easy, and it works for all ages. I've move to the channel " mybikeskills" on TH-cam and invite you to stop by.
Special thanks to bike education superstar John Waterman of the ARC Cycling Program who introduced this learn to ride technique in 1988. www.bikeprogram...
Special thanks also to my learn to ride mentor- John Cicarelli of bicyclesolutions.com, Phil Segura of ridesfo.com/sfbikeexpo.com and Ian from stampedebikes.com for the excellent bikes seen in this video.
    Thanks for watching!

Hi J, it really depends on the child. Generally 4 years and up, although very physically coordinated children might pick it up earlier or those that use balance bikes (bikes without pedals). Balance Bike Tip: if your child isn't motivated to get on their balance bike on their own, try arranging a biking playdate with another child that is interested in using theirs. The enthusiasm is often contagious.

I'm glad the video was helpful for you. I have found that when the pedals are left on, the person learning will try to use them. If they haven't yet learned to balance/glide, then they often get frustrated, and learning time is wasted. I will let them know that they will get pedals after they can glide on their own for 8-10 seconds and also glide through turns to the left and the right. If they can do that, then riding independently comes soon after. That might mean right away or a day or so later during their next practice session(s) which are usually done with just a friend or family member present.
