Single Dose Hopper: geni.us/TZ2S0 Dosing cup: geni.us/ppXnCk Is the silly appearance worth the performance? I was really impressed with this little gadget
It's absolutely not worth it 😅. Looks like a prop extra from a low budget sci-fi movie. One of the lovely things about the Breville machines is the way they look. This ... Changes that. There's also the issue of constantly opening your beans, exposing them to oxygen and UV. Is there a genuine benefit? When you talk about drinking stale grounds, you're talking about 4-6 hours between coffees on average (assuming 3-4 coffees per day) so are you *actually* drinking stale coffee? Is it really going to be more stale than if you've opened your bag of beans 4 times a day for 3 days? Seems unlikely.
I say, as long as it’s functional, then why not?! I have a similar looking hopper for my Eureka, and I wish I would’ve had this when I had my Breville - it retained quite a bit of grounds.
I have a coffee 'appliance', as people may say and I don't really care what comes into my cup and out of my machine but somehow I still find satisfaction and a 'right' answer in your videos, lol. Good job man.
@@AbdullahB17 the portafilter looks similar to my machine(homix), I hope it's not as bad as mine lol I bought a eureka mignon a while back and I've been saving for a new machine, I've got my eyes on the bambino plus and the oscar 2. not sure if saving up for the oscar 2 will be worth it or not... that's at least one or two months of saving up.
@@Max-wl5ll it depends on how 'important' coffee making is to you, if it's an art the bambino plus is the right way to go, if coffee is just coffee to you i reccomend my machine. although it might feel a bit cheap for the price, i assure you that the convenience of it will be quite good. this is my first coffee appliance, though. before buying this i had my eyes on a nestle pod machine as the convenience and variety in some of them is absolutely impeccable, yet they were too expensive and due to covid coffee pod shortages were on an all time high. but coffee appliances don't tend to be as sophisticated as coffee machines. they lack functionality and start to degrade a bit over time. and i must admit that my coffee appliance lacks things as basic as milk steaming rods, so there's a high chance with a milk carafe that the milk would go bad and the mechanism gets blocked up if you don't clean it as well.
@@AbdullahB17 the problem with mine is that it doesn't distribute water evenly over the puck of ground coffee, it's similar to one of the machines that James Hoffman reviewed in his sub-100$ machines showdown. milk steaming is also terrible in my machine, the steam runs out before I'm finished steaming and it's a really frustrating experience. I didn't buy it myself, my sister bought it a few years ago, long before I got into coffee. I don't really care about the features that 1000+$ esspreso machines offer like pid temperature control and pressure profiling, all I want is a functional machine that doesn't frustrate me every time I use it. I would be fine with using a delonghi dedica for example, but since I've already invested in an expensive grinder, why not go the extra mile and buy a fancy machine as well lol
I’ve started taking the lid and banging it up and down a few times toward the end of the grind in my BBE and it does the exact same thing. Pushes almost all of the grounds out.
I single dose and do prefer the technique. Being able to blow out retained grounds would be great, but like others I will wait for the price to become more affordable. As far as retention and contamination of a fresh dose with old grinds I have one issue with the analysis, I doubt there will be a 1:1 exchange of older retained grounds with the new grind. This would affect the ratio of old to new, however it might exacerbate the problem by including even older grinds into the new dose
I do the same. I do it about 3 times before nothing else comes out of it. But it doesn't push out nearly as much as when he did it with the proper bellow. It might still be worth the extra price
Christ, I wanted this so much as I already single dose into the SGP and notice a huge improvement in flow times after cleaning. $85 though, that's a lot of money...
I have Smart Grinder Pro I use for my Ascasco Dream PID. I been wasting coffee every morning because of this. Good to know about this - but if price does not go down there is always the handheld cordless vacuum cleaner.
Great review! You are right; the pricing is steep. But as you said and I agree it will adjust to the market as time goes on. Will keep a watch on this useful accessory! Thanks for the video! Cheers from Alaska!!
Where did you get the cup you use under the grinder and is it a good fit to the portafilter when transferring? I'm looking for a solution to the wastage over the side of the portafilter when grinding.
It's a dosing cup by Crema that fit Breville (there is a link in the description). I have it for my Breville Barista Pro and I love it for exactly that reason. Grinding into the portafilter on this machine made a mess and wasted coffee. With the dosing cup there is much less waste and I feel it helps get clumps out of the ground coffee when I flip it.
Thermal imaging of the Cosa clone reveals that the hopper runs at a whopping 120F.... Not a place to store HQ beans... so yet another reason to single dose.
Yes i love this single dose hopper. I have Euroka Mignon and with bellow it comes out to $ 90 Ouch!! As much as I love fresh new coffee every morning, it is little too pricy for me, please update if you find any cheaper product!! Thank you
No real way to modify the Oracle because it’s so automated Biggest thing you can do on the Oracle is take full advantage of the excellent pre-infusion features :)
Hey do you have any recommendations for two hoppers? One for regular and one for decaf? Right now I have the Breville Oracle Touch and the only Dual Hopper machines I can find are Superautomatics for like offices, restaurants and hotel lobby’s. Nuova Simonelli Superautomatic - Upto $13K Franke Superautomatic Coffee - Upto $15K Jura Giga 6 - $6K Does Gaggia have a cheaper one? ...I may as well just by a second Oracle Touch just for decaf at these prices! Lol
Nothing other than a purpose-made superauto is going to have "double hopper" like you're describing. Even if someone sold a split hopper where you could close off one side and open the other, you'd still need to grind through a small amount of beans before switching. If you have an Oracle Touch, you're best bet would be to just purchase a second standard hopper, or even better, a second grinder! (cheaper than buying a whole second machine)
Hi, is there a really difference in taste when using the built in grinder in a Barista express vs using a good grinder like the niche for an espresso, both to use with barista express.
@@LifestyleLab_ thank you sir for the answer, the reason i was asking is that i have a barista express, and i was think about changing the whole setup to gaggia classic pro with a Eureka facile, or keep the barista express and spend more money on a better grinder than the eureka facile, do you have any advise?
I would go with the Eureka and Gaggia combo. If you buy a more expensive grinder for use with the Breville, it will eventually be held back by the 54mm portafilter etc
Yes.. However the oracle has that tamp fan assembly which might be a source of even more retention.. Or you could remove the tamp fan and tamp manually....
I've cut a round piece of cardboard and placed it between the stock hooper and the grinder to try and stop whole beans from getting stuck, it works decently for the moment but this is pretty awesome
And here I thought my OCD with a Dyson and a specially adapted nozzle attachment that I only use to vacuum out grinds was a little much. This might save a few friendships... might.
very interesting... have you done any testing on the Oracle? I’m guessing the numbers will be so incredibly bad that I finally get a Niche grinder and leveler tool

I would love to see you get your hands on any of the Newell Brands Competitor to Breville/Sage Barista Express /Pro. Very similar build quality but uses 58mm vs 54mm portafilter & baskets.

The Breville machines already come with a bellow - it's called "flapping" the hopper cover. After the single dose is finished grinding, I will turn the grinder back on and rapidly lift one side of the cover about an inch and close it and repeat quickly. Note that you are not bending the cover in any way, you are only lifting one side of it while the opposite side acts like a "hinge". If you do it right, it provides a bellowing effect and more ground coffee comes out. With this technique, my retention is usually 0.1 - 0.2 grams. The only exception is when I vacuum (purge) the grinder and I lose 2.0 grams on retention for the first grind. But I think even high end grinders like the Niche exhibit the same thing when you purge them. Try it!
Using this method doesn't solve the problem of the stale beans from yesterdays grind that's already stuck in the chamber actually.. Your method actually dislodges those stale beans into your fresh grinds affecting brew time and taste
This is a great idea but to high $$$$ for me, I make sure I clean my grinder 2-3 times a week and dose coming out for me is better, I also fine putting 2 or 3 beans in and fanning the hoper lid will get most of the coffee out then single dose and fan lid at end of grinding will help me get .01-.02 g if not all the grinds out :)
I did single dose with the barista express, but not to improve dose consistency which was good enough IMO, but because the hoper took heat from the machine, and the beans were getting stale noticeably faster than in a coffee bag
How do people store their beans for single dosing? Surely opening the bag each time you want coffee ruins the beans? I'm looking for a cost, time and eco friendly way of doing it.
As long as you remove the air from the bag or container each time you store, there is no issue! The standard hopper is not air tight, so bean will go stale quickly if left in there too long
I just use the lid and get the angle right to smack it on top of the hopper, do it a couple of times and it works like a charm once to get the hang of it. That being said, this is still pretty cool, the marvels of 3D printing strike again.
Using this method doesn't solve the problem of the stale beans from yesterdays grind that's already stuck in the chamber actually.. Your method actually dislodges those stale beans into your fresh grinds affecting brew time and taste.
Like I mentioned in the video, it's definitely a product in its early stages, and I'll be sure to update as it becomes more widely available and therefore cheaper
thank you for this evaluation! Do you think this is worth doing with the super high retention Oracle or just switching to a Niche and Acaia scale? I see coffee on portofilter facing side of the distribution/tamping fan that bellows wouldn’t help? Also, have you measured Oracle retention? Guessing 2+ grams
It likely wouldn't be as good of an addition for the Oracle in particular. You would not be able to blow through as much air, because the portafilter is actually sealing the grinder opening. If you get a Niche, no need to splurge on an Acaia scale. The Timemore Black Mirror we reviewed was great for a fraction of the cost!
@@LifestyleLab_ thank you… oh, of course, it must be pretty much sealed 🙃 I’ve had an Oracle for about 7 years (just got a new one last year) and find that shots vary a great deal - I understand why the first one of the day is off because it has 2+ grams of ~15 hr old ground coffee, but why would there be sudden changes in the first few hours of the day?
@@LifestyleLab_ I unscrewed it, then screwed it back till the lock hopper message disappeared. I was able to pull a shot after that, but 3 shots later, it got messed up again. The thing is it is acting as a grind adjustment without telling u the size lol. I backed the Goat Story ARCO back in April 2021 which should ship soon, so might not need the Barista Pro grinder anyways. Hopefully we all get our ARCOs soon ;p
I have a Barista E and definitely single dose every time. Very interesting. Never heard of these types of devices. So does it just move air around so the beans get ground? How does it work exactly?
@@alucardleashed the lid is made out of rubber and makes a air tight seal so when you just place the lid on the hopper without fully pressing it they pushing it very hard it creates pressure and pushes some coffee out
Just ordered one..... FML it came to 130$ Cad!!!! I have been searching for mods to improve my 870xl as space is a premium in our kitchen so an integrated unit is all I have room for.
Hmm 1 year later, still the exact same price of 85$USD which is ridiculous for what it is and have to order from USA even if it says "Free Shipping Worldwide", definitely included in the price.
I have a Barista Pro. In the morning first doppio always pours perfectly. Delicious. My second doppio chokes the machine like clockwork... drip drip drip. Workflow is: single dose, grind, lightly distribute, tamp, brew (perfect shot). Clean and dry portafilter, run naked shot to clean group-head, dose, grind, distribute brew (shot chokes). What is going on here?
The process shown here might actually be contributing to that! Your first shot has a gram or two of older coffee from the burrs, while the second shot is all fresh coffee. Try purging a couple grams of grinds from the grinder before dosing and see if that makes the first shot more consistent with the second

@@fLiP7o7 Update: Yep, I received mine maybe a week ago (July 5th). So all in all took a month to get to me. Stay strong my friend, its def worth the wait. I was a little upset too with the shipping time but it is coming from China. Overall product works as described. I'm able to get a lot of the coffee grinds out. Dude I kid you not, the very first time I used it just to clear it out, it must have spat out .5g~1g of old coffee!!!! If impatient, they have some cheaper alternatives now on Etsy. They're literally half the price. And promise a 3-4 day shipping. But I cannot attest to their functionality lol. Overall been recommending this one to my friends/ family , told them its worth the wait since now I can get exactly the 16.5grams of espresso....
The biggest problem with single dosing on machines without some sort of feed restrictor is the grind actually changes as the weight from the beans change.
This doser was actually designed with a very narrow channel leading down to the burr, ensuring as much weight is placed on the beans before it until the very last bit.
@@LifestyleLab_ how do you find screwing the single dose hopper up and down every time you want to make a grind adjustment? As I understand, the hopper can’t touch the bur and there shouldn’t be too much of a gap as well, meaning if I want to change my beans or the same beans is getting older, it’s tedious to make grind adjustment.
They're being 3D printed in very small batches. The price will certainly come down in the future once production ramps up and they get an injection molding jig etc...
Using this method doesn't solve the problem of the stale beans from yesterdays grind that's already stuck in the chamber actually.. Your method actually dislodges those stale beans into your fresh grinds affecting brew time and taste
Overall very disappointed at the single dose hopper mod. Paid a fortune for it and got an inferior product as compared to what was shown shown on your video. The bellow is considerably shorter and the cap is not made of metal. It looks cheap. Won't be recommending it to anyone anytime soon.

They have the full set, a bit confusing to me. Single doser or full set. Which of these two is the right to choose?
The full set! The Single Doser by itself works wonders with retention... But gets even better with the bellow for those last bits
You weren’t kidding about the price. Hopefully done better off folks can drive down the price for the rest of us 😂
Literally this was me the second I saw the price LOL
Wait for the chinese 😁
I did single dose with the barista express, but not to improve dose consistency which was good enough IMO, but because the hoper took heat from the machine, and the beans were getting stale noticeably faster than in a coffee bag
Good point!
Nice... can be also use on the SGP.
Do you actually use this hopper daily? I just bought a Smart Grinder Pro and Im thinking of buying a single dosing hopper.
When I used this machine absolutely!
Just a simple coffee grinder … it does the job and price was really good.
I LOVE Mirror Coffee Roasters! Their coffee is amazing!!
Me too! And I swear I wasn't wasting their coffee while testing! It was an old stale bag that I used just for filming purposes, haha
Great video
Pretty cool device, a great find, as always fun and superbly done.
Amazing!
Interesting! Thanks 😊
Definitely interested... But not at this price!! 😅
Its too expensive £79 !!
I like the idea and ill buy it when it become cheaper £20 i think will be reasonable.
good info. However, as a breville espresso machine user, my recommendation is to get a hand on a better grinder.
The price is an immediate turn away
Like I mentioned in the video, it's definitely a product in its early stages, and I'll be sure to update as it becomes more widely available and therefore cheaper
$85 is ridiculous. Wouldn't pay more than $20 for ultimately what is a piece of cheap rubber.....
Oh this is genius!
You can just use a toiler plunger :)
thank you for this evaluation!
@@LifestyleLab_ thank you… oh, of course, it must be pretty much sealed 🙃
I’ve had an Oracle for about 7 years (just got a new one last year) and find that shots vary a great deal - I understand why the first one of the day is off because it has 2+ grams of ~15 hr old ground coffee, but why would there be sudden changes in the first few hours of the day?
This thing is messing up with my grind size. I think it’s adding pressure on the grinder causing it to grind very fine. Super disappointed with it 😔
You may have it screwed in too tight? Try unscrewing by a few rotations
Very interesting, I didn't run into this issue on my Barista Pro or Express. Perhaps reach out to the seller for a replacement :)
@@LifestyleLab_ Will do, thanks for getting in touch man ;p
This is cool.
Wait, there are people who are not single dosing with there barista express?
ugh someone please make a schematic for 3d printers !!! lol 80 bucks is kinda steep :(
I have a Barista E and definitely single dose every time. Very interesting. Never heard of these types of devices. So does it just move air around so the beans get ground? How does it work exactly?
AFTER the grinding has completed, you give a few pushes and the air pressure flushes out any grinds stuck in the burrs :)
“For there are devils in the deep,
but worst are the ones
we make.”
This vid and hopper were made for me...
I get it but the price is way too much...
i would like to have that 1 gram form yesterday instead of paying $100 bucks for this, pre ground coffee still a good coffee
you could try using the lid of the hopper to do the same, I don't know if it is as good but is much cheaper!
How so? You have my attention.
@@alucardleashed the lid is made out of rubber and makes a air tight seal so when you just place the lid on the hopper without fully pressing it they pushing it very hard it creates pressure and pushes some coffee out
@@drizzle1482 I'll have to give that a try sometime.
nice stuff but too expensive.. hope the price go down below 20
Danngggg. Just had a phonecall from early 2000's, they want their website back. (Single Dose Hopper link)
The price is insane.
Just ordered one..... FML it came to 130$ Cad!!!! I have been searching for mods to improve my 870xl as space is a premium in our kitchen so an integrated unit is all I have room for.
Looks like a great solution, but $75? That's dumb.
Hard to come by ? Please. it's a 3 cents print with a scope rubber eye piece on top. Make your own for $5.
Hard to come by commercially so far… not talking DIY
😎♨️🔥 Single serve is my middle name
Nick "Singe Serve" Osborn
I like it! 😎😎😎
Before you buy, just wanted to let you know:
My Purchase date: APRIL 29th 2021
Date "shipped": June 11th 2021
ETA Arrival : July 2nd 2021
Still waiting.... Shipping info hasn't been entirely updated =\ Probably wouldn't buy from this vendor again
Have you received yours? I ordered mine June 4th and it shipped June 22nd. I was unable to track the package with the link provided. I received a message back saying the item was lost in transit and I'm being shipped another as of July 7. Another guy I talked to got his but it took a month..
@@chizuoka sure, that helps some. But the last bit, especially the popcorned it will not be the same
@@chrisjames7489 there’s a single dose mod by FusedLine that has a plunger design to mitigate this very specific issue.
You may be interested in this then ;)
th-cam.com/video/6x-eKMajcTw/w-d-xo.html
@@LifestyleLab_ how do you find screwing the single dose hopper up and down every time you want to make a grind adjustment?
As I understand, the hopper can’t touch the bur and there shouldn’t be too much of a gap as well, meaning if I want to change my beans or the same beans is getting older, it’s tedious to make grind adjustment.
is this the first time we've ever seen his face????
Nope!
Last 6 or 7 videos now :)
The price is "a bit steep"... £90...
Great idea...however STUPIDLY overpriced for some 3D printing and tubing.
For Pete’s sake, the price is absolutely ridiculous. Laughable really. Too bad, it’s a great idea.
A little expensive... it is $100 that is insane.
Again, its not really a mass produced item yet. Prices will drop significantly once someone starts injection molding them
Steep? The price is ridiculous! £72 for a single doser only. Over £90 for the whole set? Nah, thanks. I'll pass.
They're being 3D printed in very small batches. The price will certainly come down in the future once production ramps up and they get an injection molding jig etc...
You can tap the original hopper lid a couple of times and the retention is almost cero. No need to spend $100 on this for a regular home machine IMO.
Using this method doesn't solve the problem of the stale beans from yesterdays grind that's already stuck in the chamber actually.. Your method actually dislodges those stale beans into your fresh grinds affecting brew time and taste
it's impressive but too much!
The price. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Overall very disappointed at the single dose hopper mod. Paid a fortune for it and got an inferior product as compared to what was shown shown on your video. The bellow is considerably shorter and the cap is not made of metal. It looks cheap. Won't be recommending it to anyone anytime soon.
What a joke! There is no such thing as a perfect cup of coffee.
That's your takeaway from this video?
Nah
At $108 Australian, I’ll pass. But thanks anyway mate.
DO NOT ORDER
I used the link in the description to order this, but never received the actual product or an confirmation. They are also not responding to me on messenger. I tried to check my order history but even that is not possible. I paid 85 usd for this. I hope I can get my money back. Anyone knows more about the seller?
Update 1:
They send me an e-mail after 4 days of ordering that they are preparing my shipment. I ordered from the Netherlands. I will update if I received the shipment.
Update 2:
I still haven’t received any update about my order for the single hopper. I tried contacting them again and they do not reply anymore. I tried to contact them via instagram and messenger. Both do not work.
If you want any advice. Do NOT order this from the link in the description . I lost the money.
