I bought two sets in order to build the mid-sized ship. That was the one I had as a kid. A parts list of remaining pieces needed to build the small ship from leftover pieces of the second Galaxy Explorer Kit I purchased would be greatly appreciated.
that middle sized one almost looks better than the big one. Looks pretty close to the original explorer too in size. I'm considering building a little display area with classic and new sets together - so how much free space I have will decide which I go with. The small one I may not build at all, or at least will need fixed legs using spare parts
I wound up buying two sets. I built the main model and the medium LL 924 model. Not really motivated to build the smaller one either. These sets are so well designed that I wish Lego would let the designer keep going with the theme. They are just perfect. Exceeding all my expectations.
The robot seat on the small ship was indeed intentional, if I recall correctly the designer talked about it in an interview with Assembled. I have to say, these are incredible alternate builds. The ones in creator sets often look a bit jumbled together but these ships really don't have that typical alternate build look at all, they could easily be primary builds. The designer knocked it out of the park!
They should have included printed instructions for the alternate builds though. For a set you buy you shouldn't have to go online to download alternative instructions.
Mike Psiaki is the designer, an extraordinarily talented builder whose work I watched with fascination and awe years before he got the job at LEGO. He has designed a number of notable sets, mostly in the Expert Creator line. So glad he got the job at LEGO- super thankful for 10497.
I really love the mid-sized model because, with it looking so similar to the main 928 build, it could serve as a stand-in for the main build for builders with less display space.
That is a good idea. What bummed me out though is they changed the landing gear. I love the original Landing gear and one of mine broke so i was hoping they would offer spares but instead it has a completely different landing gear to the original lol
This was really cool to see. Essentially this is a 3 in one build which outside of Creator 3 in 1 is something rarely if ever seen from Lego. Definitely reminds me of when boxes had alternate builds on the back to further encourage creativity other than what was built. Though I'd build only the first model to get the full value of the piece count the second variation is also quite nice as well and for those with limited space a nice smaller display model.
Interestingly enough, the original Galaxy Explorer from 1979 had those images on the back you mentioned, so having alternate builds is kind of like an extra level of set accuracy.
I started building Legos at a late age (52) and I never knew how many sets I've missed over the years. I watch your videos and from time to time you show some pass models and they're great. Keep up the great builds and your honest opinions.
I recently had to give up for a while as i was spending far too much money but if you are after the best Star wars sets go for the Kylo Ren Shuttle and Tie Fighter. They are just amazing compared to most sets today. Another good one is the Stranger Things Upside down world set.
I think Lego have missed a trick with the alternative builds. They could have produced an upgrade set that would allow both the alt sets to be built. Including printed bricks with the old 918 & 924 on them. Throw in a couple of different coloured spacemen minifigs and they would sell like hotcakes.
Whilst I despise this new reimagined set with a passion, I can agree with the "shoulda included printed bricks for 918 and 924" such an omission is bewildering to say the least. AND agree with your "throw in a couple of new coloured spacemen" thing too.
@@walkerbeane4760 If Lego had wanted to celebrate the Classic Space Set they should have done so by rereleasing the ACTUAL set, not giving us this reimagined version. It's kinda like bringing back Firefly with a whole new cast who slightly look like the old lot... ish.
I remember as a kid working for days to make enough money to buy the original Galaxy Explorer. It was $50 back in the day. I think it was 1979 , or 1980. I had a few other Space LEGO sets but the Galaxy Explorer was the biggest. I held onto them even though I didn't play with them. I went off to college and my mom gave all my LEGOs away. I finally saw that this new version came out and decided to buy one. I am old, but I still want to reminisce while building it, I might very well send it to my grandson, but, it might be a healing thing when I give it away by my own decision. I really enjoyed the old Space Legos, they were molded, but not overly molded like so many of the new Lego sets. I also enjoy seeing that Lego created a landing gear that folds up, I remember trying to come up with my own back then. I hope Lego comes out with new Space Lego Icon sets.
Honestly, Mike Psiaki is clearly a different beast. Almost all of his designs are amazing to say the least. He always achieves the perfect compromise between style and playability ! Crazy angles yet sturdy structures ! Anyone doing MOCs of any type knows the struggle. And he also looks like an awesome and funny guy in the few interviews I got to watch. (Don't get me wrong, I know he's not alone and there are other very talented designers at Lego. Cheers to them also !)
I bought two copies of the set, building the big 928 and the smallest 918, with the plan of dismantling 918 to build 924. However, in the meantime I built some MOCs with the 918 leftovers, and was so pleased with them I didn't want to break them up! So, in addition to providing amazing official models, I think this set is a great (and reasonably-priced) parts-pack for Classic Space MOCs. (I've since bought a third copy so that I can build 924!)
This brings back some nostalgic memories of my pre-teens. The original of these were my first ever LEGO sets. I even did a few stop motion short home movies on a VHS-C video camera using these sets.
I was actually surprised getting this for Christmas, I had thought it was a one and done set until I saw the link to the alternate builds which really grabbed my attention quickly because I mainly buy lego creator sets so that was a pleasant surprise for me
I am really pumped for this set. I hope to get mine tomorrow. As i said in the original video, I have the "original" 918 and can't wait to add this. One thing though. While I love the alternate builds, a nice throw-back, it would have been nice to make 924 and 918 brick for the sides, as they ALL have 928. :)
Just got this kit for Christmas. Was a fun one day build and took me back to the 70s when I played with the original. I think I'll be disassembling it on New Year's eve and building the middle sized one. One thing I don't care for on this kit, though, is the lack of any depth on the bottom. The original had the belly, which aided in interior space. Wondering what I might be able to come up with when I finish all of the different versions...
I love this idea and I will be buying 2 of this set because I love the galaxy explorer and the 924 space transporter was always my favourite out of the 3 and I still have all the original sets 😀
It seems silly that they didn't figure out how to allow you to build both alternates from the same Galaxy Explorer...it surely has to only be a handful of pieces, and some of the bigger ones perhaps could've been worked around, especially for the smaller one where I have to imagine the lack of features like the landing gear could've allowed for a few compromises/slightly jankier alternate-model techniques.
All three builds use pretty much all of the edge-building pieces (3x6 wedge plates, door rails, 30 degree slopes, 2x4 tiles, etc.) and printed pieces; they would have had to include a bunch of extra parts or changed one of the builds to use totally different techniques somehow.
You made a great point that the joy of rebuilding different models is a value of the set. Kids get tons of replay value out of Lego and afols not so much. This gives them some.
Can't wait to buy it ( I'm still at work and hoping it won't be sold out by the time I reach the shop ) small question, can we get a list of the pieces we would lack to build the 2 alternates model at the same time?
The sad part of thèse alternâtes models is that Lego didn’t include additionnal parts with the ships numbers (LL918 and LL924 bricks). Pretty sure people would have bought 3 copies!
I was about 10 or 11 when my uncle bought me the original set (the big one - and my grandmother was very angry with how much money he spent lol). It was my first and only "big" Lego set I had a kid and remember it fondly.
I still have the 3 originals made up in a cabinet to this day. I also have on display the early 80's blue and white rocket base, The Blue Robot, and a few of the ships from around then. Unfortunately my parents gave most of the Lego i had to my neighbours up the back when we moved house years ago as they thought i had grown out of it lol.
I found a workaround for the wobbly antenna: replace the grey round brick by a round transparent green brick , voilà: the antenna isn't wobbly anymore. That worked for me.
I own the original LL924 and LL928, now this is out there I'm definitely buying the new Galaxy explorer - would be interested to see how many pieces are shared as I would love to be able to build both of the new 924 and 928
Wow, didn't know you were into this part of the Lego-Sphere! Very much appreciated, hat's off to you! BTW/FWIW, I didn't plan to buy this, but there was a space on the floor near the cash registers this morning when I was checking out with a bunch of current, disco'd and brand-new Speed Champions sets and since this was mock-vintage and the last one in the store, it went home with me. :-)
I only had 918 when I was a kid, and I'm a bit disappointed by its modern recreation. I really liked that the cockpit of the original was recessed below the wing (also made a good handhold for swooshing as I recall!), and I would have loved seeing that in the small alternate model. I'm also missing a landing gear for the small model. I originally planned to buy 3 copies of 10497 to build and display all three models with my original 918, and I might still do so. At the same time I am tempted to try to make my own 918 recreation that is more faithful to the original.
If this new reimagined version doesn't thrill you, you could always pick up the original 928 for about the same prices as the new one on eBay. You might have to wait a bit, but they are often listed.
Hello racing Brick i am here to tell you the lego postcard sets dont have the push boxes anymore at the back and that they now have tape to close boxes this is a great improvement in my opinion

I was surprised and shocked to see that my local lego store had plenty of this set (which I will build the main one) at 6pm, also amusingly had the ATTE wasn't interested in that so got the aston martin speed champions, kenobi brickheadz, london post card and NYC post card so got the forest man promo and spent £40 worth of VIP points
You should just get the ATTE anyway as it will be worth a fortune once it retires. People go crazy over those sets. Speed Champion sets are the best value i think.
Another awesome video I picked up 2 sets one to build one to save I have a question in the top left corner of your shelf you have the Technic race truck how did you do the spoiler on it is it on another site because that's just amazing looking I have the set.but it doesn't show the spoiler so thanks
You won't find instructions for it, I simply improvised that spoiler. As I'm rebuilding the truck for the BuWizz weekend I might create instructions later.
Too bad that you can't build both smaller alternates, and have all three spaceships with only two boxes. But... maybe you can get enough of the missing pieces separately to accomplish this? I still have the original 928 set up, but my original 924 is disassembled... until I manage to get all the pieces together again.
I have my set on backorder from Lego. I had the midsize cruiser as a kid, might even still have most of the parts somewhere. But I'm torn between making the Galaxy Explorer or the new midsize first... :D
Hey Balazs, I finished building them all. I am utterly in shock at the size of the titanic. I also heard that LEGO will be releasing a UCS Razor Crest.
Do you have a list of the required parts to create both alternate builds from one set? Most of them have to be pre-existing, easy to get pieces. I'll do it myself if I have to, but I'd prefer to not if someone else has it already done :D
I created the parts list by adding the list of parts used in both alternate builds, and subtracting the list of parts used in the main build, deleting any parts that then had a quantity of zero or less (which means that the 90 parts, quantity 341 pieces. Rebrickable estimates the cost of the pieces at over $50! I submitted this as a MOC to Rebrickable, but I can send you the CSV if you'd like.
@@Antidisinformation thanks, I'll definitely check out the MOC once it is public. Unfortunately the printed pieces won't appear anytime soon in Bricks & Pieces, maybe on Rebrickable.
FIRST i really thought you can build both with one set. Than i saw on the package that some key-elements are not double… So, if you want to build all three you need three sets. And for this i think there are too many parts left. The interesting question is: How many parts are from all three sets left and WHAT can you build out of all of them! So that you have a fourth model.
Excellent review of the 2 alternative models but I prefer the lego version that I bought today and I can't wait to build it because I will be very happy when I build it☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ You are the top😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎RacincBrick for your fantastic reviews and be amazed by your passion for legos
Main build is state of art, but man, it's way bigger than I expected. I consider rebuilding the bigger alt because I don't have enough space for displaying main model and other sets I want to have on display.
I only bought two thinking that the two alt builds could be built out of one set so this is disappointing but I am not to disappointed because I wasn’t to eager to build the smallest one so I am fine for now
I think bricklink i😊s going to be busy selling the parts needed to build more than one out of the kit. I have mine from the OG days so these will look great along side the re-imaged ones.
I really wish my dad hadn't have given my 33 Lego base plates to the neighbours kids when we moved years ago lol . I had no idea how expensive those plates would become to get again. Thankfully a few years ago i did manage to get the ones for the Galaxy Explorer and a couple of extras but prices now are kind of insane. I think i paid $25 for 4 plates now some people want $50 each lol
@@lovemadeinjapan What a load of rubbish lol. I have tons of like new 70's and 80's Lego. As long as you didn't leave it outside in the weather it should still be in excellent condition anyway. I bought an 80's set off Ebay recently too and it has nothing wrong with it. the only issue was the original space helmets tended to crack hence why Benny has a cracked helmet. I still have plenty that didn't crack though all the same. If you want base plates for Space Lego these days 2nd hand is your only option anyway unless you want crappy looking brick built ones.
@@DEVILTAZ35 I gave my LM924 a second chance, and it is quite cute. Did not realise how much more intelligent humanity was in the eighties. 10 steps in the instructions only, no brick-pick inserts for what you need. Lego allowed our brains to work back then. Today manuals are 1kg and detail every step so that a 18+ model like a Lamborghini Sian can be build by a 5 year old.
Your video is great! The starship looks cool, but I think 100 Dollars for the starship is a really ridiculous and rude price. Lego tries to rip people off because they know people love nostalgia. And that's absolutely rude from Lego. I don't think that production costs for one set is more than 10 dollars.
Such a great set! I hope to get my hands on it tomorrow, but already sure I'm gonna love it. And the option to build these two only adds tho that. I do think it's a shame however that you can't build both at the same time, as that would make getting a 2nd set basically a no-brainer. But to buy three sets.....even with the very fair price that's really stretching it. Also, while I do love that this set has only prints and no stickers, I wouldn't have minded a few for the LL924 and LL918 numbers. But still, those are only minor nitpicks.
The 918 variation is clearly a fail. I‘m afraid this has to be fixed by using some extra parts, just saying. 🙄 The bottom of the original ship is one brick under the wing so the astronaut is seated much lower than in the bigger ships, this was ignored by the designer and therefore the model is way too far from the spirit of the 1979 set. 🤔
I suspect part of the reason they went with a 'reclining seat' arrangement for the pilot is that he (along with his 'reclining steering wheel') fills up more space in the cockpit; if the pilot is able to sit upright, as in the original, this cockpit (under its huge canopy) looks very empty.
I think I’m kind of emotional about the 918, me and also my brother got one for christmas in 1979, we both were absolutely fascinated with that and so we asked for more Lego Space whenever a birthday or christmas was coming. I‘m already making plans how to improve the model - maybe I can use the canopy of a Battrax or something.. 🤔
Thank you very much, this video is very helpful and easy to understand. I'm from Indonesia, nice to meet you. Please feedback for me. thanks very much😁
The building is weird. I've the original 924 manual in front of me. 8 pages, 20 building steps. They knew how to make building instructions back then. Today they treat you like a baby.

@@RacingBrick OK ty very much
going to experiment to see if the middle one can be modded to take a small buggy in place of the storage area.
Too bad that you can't build both smaller alternates, and have all three spaceships with only two boxes.
But... maybe you can get enough of the missing pieces separately to accomplish this?
I still have the original 928 set up, but my original 924 is disassembled... until I manage to get all the pieces together again.
R2D2 slot in the third build?
nice review! can't wait to get one set from the store. btw, what software do you use to make the rotating animation at 1:18? thank you!
Ldview was used
I have my set on backorder from Lego. I had the midsize cruiser as a kid, might even still have most of the parts somewhere. But I'm torn between making the Galaxy Explorer or the new midsize first... :D
Cool set, with a great guy, next to a very poor box 😕
Just wanna say thank you!👍
Hey Balazs, I finished building them all. I am utterly in shock at the size of the titanic. I also heard that LEGO will be releasing a UCS Razor Crest.
Out early next month at some stupid price that it is just not worth lol. Plus it has lots of stickers :(
Do you have a list of the required parts to create both alternate builds from one set? Most of them have to be pre-existing, easy to get pieces.
I'll do it myself if I have to, but I'd prefer to not if someone else has it already done :D
I don't have a list, but there are some printed exclusive parts that you will miss for sure
@@RacingBrick yeah. I hope LEGO releases them on the purchase bricks section.
I created the parts list by adding the list of parts used in both alternate builds, and subtracting the list of parts used in the main build, deleting any parts that then had a quantity of zero or less (which means that the
90 parts, quantity 341 pieces.
@@RacingBrick MOC wasn't approved, because it wasn't a MOC… but here's the list of required parts.
I actually love that this set has alternate builds. This is how I look at Lego. I don't care for the licensed themed sets.
Excellent review of the 2 alternative models but I prefer the lego version that I bought today and I can't wait to build it because I will be very happy when I build it☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
You are the top😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎RacincBrick for your fantastic reviews and be amazed by your passion for legos
Wish I had the set, maybe one day! Hope you have a great time building it!
Main build is state of art, but man, it's way bigger than I expected. I consider rebuilding the bigger alt because I don't have enough space for displaying main model and other sets I want to have on display.
I think it would be cool if u could build both b models simultaneously
I only bought two thinking that the two alt builds could be built out of one set so this is disappointing but I am not to disappointed because I wasn’t to eager to build the smallest one so I am fine for now
I grabbed two this morning.
I think bricklink i😊s going to be busy selling the parts needed to build more than one out of the kit. I have mine from the OG days so these will look great along side the re-imaged ones.
Bocsi hogy megkérdezem, de az egy nagyból kijön a két kicsi? Vagy egyszerre csak egyet lehet megépíteni?
Egyszerre csak egyet, vannak közös alkatrészek
@@RacingBrick Köszi a választ.
The original designer must have liked Porsche when you see the numbers
Awesome!
Of the 3 designs, which one is your favorite one? Which will you keep as your display piece when not rebuilding?
I'm hesitating between the main build and the bigger alternate model
so just buy one and you can assemble 3 size of spaceship, just download the guideline from web?
Yes, but you can only build one at a time
@@RacingBrick 👌❤😁
I really wish my dad hadn't have given my 33 Lego base plates to the neighbours kids when we moved years ago lol . I had no idea how expensive those plates would become to get again. Thankfully a few years ago i did manage to get the ones for the Galaxy Explorer and a couple of extras but prices now are kind of insane. I think i paid $25 for 4 plates now some people want $50 each lol
I would not pay a cent for classic lego. Brittle and yellowed.... The old plastic is pretty crap compared to the current quality.
X-Mas X-Wing! FLEXXXXXXX
Nice
haha i just bought 3 sets! fun to play with the kiddos
no, I want my lego movie spaceship!!!!
7:21 if you SPACE it out... 🤣
Ok I’m probably gonna sound dumb but these are coming out as actual sets right?
10497 is the main set, and you can build the two smaller versions using the instructions available online
@@RacingBrick Ok thank you for the clarification
You can't build the two side builds together... could of done with this info before buying 2 of them
The information was in this video, could have watched it first :)
if they’re unopened, you can return them for free, but also doing a little research before gambling $200 would be smart
GOorrrrrrdito :)
Your video is great! The starship looks cool, but I think 100 Dollars for the starship is a really ridiculous and rude price. Lego tries to rip people off because they know people love nostalgia. And that's absolutely rude from Lego. I don't think that production costs for one set is more than 10 dollars.
Lego is expensive, that is true, but this set is on the cheaper side by price per piece (8c vs 11c average).
No one will talk about the semi destroyed box?
If you watch the main review you will know what happened :)
@@RacingBrick 😂
i have the original sets
The 918 variation is clearly a fail.
I‘m afraid this has to be fixed by using some extra parts, just saying. 🙄
The bottom of the original ship is one brick under the wing so the astronaut is seated much lower than in the bigger ships, this was ignored by the designer and therefore the model is way too far from the spirit of the 1979 set.
🤔
I'm thinking of adding that extra section below the wing-level, but as an additional (possibly easily-detachable) cargo-space.
Please feedback for me. thanks very much😁
Glad you like the content!
The new one simply doesn't look as good as the original.
Original space were better. Looks weird and is built weird
The building is weird. I've the original 924 manual in front of me. 8 pages, 20 building steps. They knew how to make building instructions back then. Today they treat you like a baby.
First!
