Hi! Thanks for watching. I just wanted to let you know that after I made and published this video, I realized that I had made several building mistakes. Sorry about that…I’m just an old guy who had brain surgery a few months ago lol. But I’m glad to be alive and glad to be building and making videos again. Thanks to all who have pointed out my building errors!
Just realized that Benny's having LL 929 and the galaxy explorer being LL 928 made Benny's basically a next gen galaxy explorer. Though I am sure some people noticed that when Benny's came out.
Some of your "mistakes" could be seen as personal touch or customizations. The blue piece on the aft door you have on inside out could be a useful way to mount some other gadget like even more lights or a sensor. Even the way the instructions have them on the inside, it feels like something else should go on them like lights, more tools, or display panels. The triangle pieces near the yellow/black "Invasion Stripes" could just as easily go where you have them.
I think the Galactic Explorer had to stick to the old “clean and simple” look a lot more than Benny’s. Benny’s was the ship you made with all the space parts you had from the sets. I thought the engines come off it to be little mini scooter type ships?
100%. They're both good in their own ways, bennys ship feels like a new set with new parts that follows the old blocky classic space build, whereas the galaxy explorer feels like a modern sleek and detailed recreation of classic space. Both are great and I'd be totally fine with either
@@Gameprojordan I think one or two a year like with the modular buildings could be cool. The smaller ships could even be part of a base or just a lower price. the same with the Castle line would be nice too.
@@manifestman132 I 100% agree. Hope Lego noticed the popularity of these 90th anniversary throwback sets and makes it a habit of releasing other ones later on. there are actually instructions online to build smaller ships out of the Galaxy Explorer. A remake of Set 6985 "Cosmic Fleet Voyager" would be amazing though
it's still not a patch on the original though. Something about the jerky oversized yellow ratchet style cockpit covers just aren't as cool as the original opener :). It also should have had the planet logo pieces on the sides plus actual printed pieces for the side grills as what they used is not a good replacement for that design. Also it looks weird that they went with a printed planet piece so small and just surrounded it with other non printed pieces on the front instead of just a larger design like the original. I do appreciate all printed pieces however. Especially for all of the computers. Unlike most Star wars sets today lol
Just a few points, your 2x2 toe triangles on the wings are in the wrong place. You have them along the tile edging and they are supposed to be back a few studs. Also you said the original Galaxy Explorer had stickers for the arrows. Just for clarification, they were actually printed pieces. There were no stickers in the original space sets.
Having just restored my 1979 model with all original parts, I fell in love with the model again, so LL928 all the way for me. Now, I'm looking to get my hands on the new version. That's so nice.
Benny's spaceship looks much more like sets made in the mid 90-s. Very busy, plenty of slapped-on play features and detachable modules. The new one is sleek and minimalistic by comparison, but it's also much more artistically pleasing for that reason, and that doesn't come at the cost of less play functions - it's superior in that regard to the original model - which is already enough IMO. I have nostalgia for the times where models looked like Benny's spaceship, so I'd probably want to build that one first, if given a choice
The best way to describe Benny's Starship... is Classic Space filtered by late 90's/Aught's Space. It would fit in next to next to Mars Mission/SP III with out clashing in styles with appropriate Space mini figures instead of the movie ones.
I have both these models. As a child, I had the LL 918, and still have a number of pieces from it, including the number bricks. They're now attached to the Galaxy Cruiser
Now that you pointed out that Benny's ship looks like a fighter jet it actually makes the set alot cooler. I could see it acting as a military ship where the blue and black spacemen pilot to patrol the areas and defend against any threats. I'm pretty sure the blue space guys are meant to be soldiers, while the black space guys act as spies.
I regretted not buying Benny's Spaceship after it went out of production. Thankfully the new Galaxy Explorer came out which is so much better for someone who had the original back in the day. Nice clean design but upgraded to make a fantastic tribute to the original.
So, I was never into Classic Space; never had any sets from any of those themes. However, the old school in me is really drawn to the Galaxy Explorer out of the pure nostalgia factor, but now as I have also seen the set actually built and up close, I'm also very drawn to how sleek the updated build looks, while still calling out to the 70's build. Benny's ship does have a lot of parts that directly evoke old school parts, but I don't get the same feeling about that as I do seeing the G/E. So that definitely gets my vote!
The 70's build you could hold by the sides and swoosh about though. This one falls apart lol. The old one does too if you grab it by the engines but you can grab it by the side wings unlike the new one lol.
So glad I found this video because this exact comparison is what I was looking for after building the Galaxy Explorer and finding out about Benny's Spaceship. Still not sure if I want to jump on getting Benny's Spaceship secondhand though, I feel like the stickers and overabundance of play features hold it back, at least for me personally.
I've seen Jang's review and I have a few helpful comments about the Explorer. Firstly, as I see has been resolved, the 928 does in fact have a pair of miniships which form the secondary wing engines on the main ship. Second, you're supposed to lower the hatch at the rear of the ship fully before sliding the ramp out. This stops the ramp from getting caught by the anti-studs to the cheese wedges below, and allows the ramp to drop to the ground.
bennys space ship every time, the original galactic explorer although like most lego of the time was primitive, it was one of the classic space lego sets we all wanted, and just like the galaxy commander, or the robot command centre you really cannot go wrong if you have certain sets from back in the day, and while this new version of the galaxy explorer is no doubt put together better, and is a better set generally than the original, my heart is still in love with the classic sets.
I built this model a few months out of having brain surgery…at that point, I really wasn’t 100% back to my Lego game. So there are a few things I didn’t build correctly on it and the ramp was one of them. You shouldn’t have any probs with it like I did. Mine was user error. lol
Lego do it every time they use those pieces. I cringe every time i get a Tie fighter that has 2 or 3 of them from an older set lol. I just hope they survived ok in the box. So far so good :)
Galaxy explorer wins. Simple & iconic silhouetts and color contrast was enough to win us. Not to mention more watered down build actually allows for more potential for alternate builds! When every part of a model screams for attention like in 2000s legos, you get distracted from the model very fast. Too much detailing makes silhouettes complex, relies on many specialized parts, and limits your ability to re-purpose model for other builds, unless you have lots of bulk lying around. So yes.. LEGO please just focus on BASICS FIRST, then worry about details or eye catchers.
Modern spacecraft's have landed similar to planes, but they are not as similar as you would think. Spaceships often are brought into space by larger rockets, so the aerodynamic look is discarded as it is useless in the vacuum of space.
Having grown up in the Space Shuttle era that notion always sounded logical to me. Before I started digging deeper into astronomy and space exploration a couple of years ago I thought the idea of rockets was outdated. Turns out due to the amount of fuel needed a rocket is still the best method to launch a payload into outer space while an airplane-like craft s a somewhat logical (not the only) solution for low earth orbit. Nevertheless, these delta wing fantasy spacehips are still extremely cool.
I’ll be honest, I think both spaceships are awesome, but the Lego movie version was discontinued and I couldn’t get it, but luckily my oldest brother got the new generation of Benny's spaceship.
I had a friend in the 80s that built a very large, almost room-filling spaceship, made from Legos of any colors available at that time. Benny's Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP! and the construction shown in the LEGO Movie reminded me very much of that spaceship, adding some function here and there, except that it sticks to the classic colors and has a higher playability (whoosh! fighter jet!) than the colorful carpet-sized one, which you might have had to call a space station actually, because it was stationary :D. Since I was a great fan of the classic lego series back then and still have pretty much all of my old sets, my favorite is the new Galaxy Explorer. But Benny's spaceship as a movie character also holds a special place.
Both great sets with different purposes. Benny’s spaceship was such an awesome throwback in the movie (like his broken helmet!) and fun surprise, but ultimately a play set for kids (since the movie existed to sell toys). The new Explorer is a much more sleek throwback, meant for those of us that grew up with the original space toys. Just look at the piece counts and see how much is going on on Benny’s ship, and how much hidden structure and detail is in the Explorer. Both awesome though, and thanks for showing them off side by side!
70816 is a lot better it is not as slim and slick, but it is so much more fun and interesting to look at. i have one, and i never built it, but i might soon
Both are amazing. I have the original galaxy explorer and both of these. Haven't finished building the new galaxy explorer yet so I'll have to decide when I'm done. At the moment I prefer bennys spaceship but I've only done the grey parts of the build. When I add the blue and trans yellow I think I will prefer it
How to be able to compare 2 ships with different purposes the LL928 is designed for space exploration and the LL929 is designed for combat missions so how can we pick the better one? From a builder perspective I believe Benny ship as more bling! bling! such as hidden compartment, detachable shuttle, hidden robot, missile launcher so for me it would be the LL929 the best choice.
I just built the Galaxy Explorer. I'm impressed even not a lego space fan. I would have to say the Galaxy Explorer is more superior just some of the way it is designed and the fact it has lots of space interior wise would take it above Benny's spaceship.
Oh boy it's difficult to say which is better. I would love one modern take on the Starfleet Voyager. But as I loved classic space I'd go with the Galaxy Explorer.
It's just too bad that they didn't number the new one as LL 930 just to show that the ship is a newer, more modern series. But then, this is sort of like the 1979 version is "The Original Enterprise" and this one is like "The Motion Picture". Same ship name and number, but one is more upgraded.
The galaxy explorer is sturdier and nicer look. And I love all the little extra details they added. But I think which ever set someone had originally is going to be a big part of what they prefer. For me, it is the explorer because it reminds me of the great time I had with the space cruiser
as someone without the nostalgia of the space theme, far before my time, i have to go with benny's spaceship. its a bit chaotic, sure, but it has so much detail and inticracy mixed with a bit of chaos and a great action feature to top it off. the classic is sleek yes, but i think a bit plain
As a display piece? Galaxy Explorer. Not just for the nostalgia factor, but because it has those wonderful beveled wing edges and a fairly clean/simple design that can be appreciated at a distance. Benny’s spaceship is really busy with lots of detail that makes it hard to appreciate on display. For build experience? They’re both interesting, but Galaxy Explorer I think takes the edge with some fascinating geometry and some new techniques. I enjoyed building Benny’s spaceship, but I learned things from Galaxy Explorer. For play? Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, no question. It’s got lots of great play areas, particularly the command center in the middle. I love the robot storage and the way the two smaller spaceships perfectly continue the angle of the wing edges. And it’s a better shape and design for swooshing. And for those who play that way, it’s got 2 or 3 kinds of shooters. As a parts pack? Toss-up. Each has a handful of rare or unique parts, though most of them in Benny’s spaceship have since become available in other sets. Each of them has enough valuable parts that I almost bought a second copy just as a parts pack-but only “almost”. I suspect the only parts in the new Galaxy Explorer that won’t become available in other sets in the near future are the printed parts. For minifigs? Toss-up. I don’t care for the robot in Galaxy Explorer and love the robots in Benny’s spaceship. And spacesuit Unikitty is really cool. But whether old-school space minifigs or Lego Movie tie-in minifigs are more valuable depends on the person. I still have dozens of the original classic space minifigs, some with good prints, so getting a few more isn’t that special. But if you don’t have them and want them? Then that’s clearly a win. (I also think that buying a $100 set just for the minifigs is silly. YMMV.)
I think Benny's is more true to the vintage space's rough aesthetic. The galaxy explorer uses a lot of smooth plate and has chunky edges which are reminiscent of modern lego and which I hate. So I start to favour Benny's... But the main advantage the Galaxy Explorer has over Benny's is that there are no stickers just like in vintage space. The other advantage the Galaxy Explorer has is that it's an exploration vessel just like vintage space. Benny's Spaceship is what the USS Defiant would look like if it was made of vintage space lego: sure the rough aesthetic might be right but it's a full blown warship. Benny's Spaceship exists solely to blow up stuff. Whilst this is super awesome it's not true to the vintage space philosophy, which is where the Galaxy Explorer has the edge. They're both great ships. I can't choose between them because the pluses and minuses kinda cancel each other out. GALAXY EXPLORER: not quite vintage space aesthetic due to excessive smooth tiles + chunkiness on the edges but has vintage space philosophy as it is built for exploration and vintage space brick/tile design with no stickers. BENNY'S SPACESHIP: has vintage space aesthetic but deviates from vintage space brick/tile design because it has stickers and is a military dreadnought which has nothing to do with vintage space exploration philosophy
I think one good way to describe the difference is that one is built how lego designs their sets, whereas the other is designed how a child would build a moc. Both of which are awesome, but one has more intent behind it for durability, and style, where as the other is just a cool Spaceship spaceship space ship
@@DrMcBrick I did it, it came early I finished it last night. The light kit I purchased for it an my Concorde (Set 10318) comes today. So that's what I'll be doing after I get off from work today. Then Tomorrow I'll make the short trip to my local Lego store an pick up the Dune Ornithopter (Set 10327).
I prefer benny's Spaceship. My experience with Classic Space was around '83 and by then there was a more 'otherworldy' feel to it rather than just teched up moon landings.
With an eye on the basic design elements Benny's spaceship has the advantage to be the more evolved one, because the cockpit is integrated into and down under the winglevel. This concept is shown (first) in the LL918. The new Galaxy Explorer is a genius built, but misses the opportunity to have more details and volum on the underside. But hey, it's lego and gives rom for moc's! Both models had to take som colour compromises, the new galaxy explorer uses (to much) white, Bennys uses (to much) dark grey. Thank you for the topic, both romships are my favorites in my collection 😉.
I recently bought the Galaxy Explorer, it's a great set. I got the small Benny Space Squad set when the lego movie came out, so that I could at least have a Benny mini-fig.
Benny's to me feels more like a homage to ALL of Lego space the colors of the og Legoland sets detail and shape that's more fitting of blacktron 2 or M tron, glowing bits like space police, it's all of space
Much of my own childhood was spent deciding whether I was spending my money on Lego or Star Wars. Then Lego Star Wars came out. It's too bad she wasn't around back then, because the "why not both" girl would have had her finest hour that day.
Hey mate, you must have build sth wrong on that ramp. This is smooth as it can be on mine. Firet goes the under ramp down and then you slide out the actual ramp piece.
It's not as good as the original when you consider what little pieces that needed though and it had one large piece for the front Planet Logo plus the front opened smoothly unlike the new one which uses a ratchet style piece so it is really jerky in motion to open the cockpit.
Yep Benny's follows the oldschool blocky layout of the build but with the convenience of a plethora of modern parts, Galaxy Explorer takes the oldschool builds and increases the detail and intricacy
Personaly I prefer the Galaxy Expoler. One of the coolest set what Lego renewed. Lots of briliant building technic in the set, and has no guns on the ship because don't need it. The classic space sets haven"t got guns or other weapons, because that time Lego made the sets freindlier, focusing the space exploring, not the fighting. Good old days :)
Sorry to hear that. I wish LEGO would put them in a separate bag but I’m sure it costs since it’s all automated. But I’d rather spend an extra buck or two for a guaranteed scratch free canopy.
I have both as well! Built Benny’s Spaceship a few years ago, I really love the set. The 2022 Galaxy Explorer is still in the box, I didn’t get to building it yet (currently building the Lion Knight’s Castle). I agree that Benny’s looks more like a fighter jet if you see them side by side, good point you made there. Not sure what my favourite will be, so far it’s Benny’s but I haven’t appreciated building the GE yet so that might very well still change. ☺️
(I’m my opinion,) Bennys spaceship is best for aerial combat, due to the mass amounts of guns and weapons and such. The galaxy explorer is better for exploring due to the rover and landing gear and open space inside
Got to say I prefer the Galaxy explorer, as it has that beefy wing section, simple to read design and lots of imaginative play adventures. The other, is more like the planetary defender, a ship that can get to any part of a planet speedily but still operate in atmosphere. It is fun, quirky and perfect for what it is, and in the film. For me its over the top and I would rebuild things for more playability options over violence and lose the expanding feature for more interior space, oh and beef up the wings to add landing gear...
I love the 90 years Galaxy Explorer so much! Absolutely prefer it over Benny's spaceship! Even though it took me quite some time to get used to the huge "spoiler" on the rear. But it has all that I ever wanted in a spaceship as a kid. Even sleeping berths and so many displays! The only small thing is that I think they should have taken a different number, it's not LL928 because that one's from 1979, and Benny's spaceship is LL929 ... so maybe LL938 would have been perfect :)
I bought an original Galaxy Explorer from working odd jobs and being 10yrs old. $32 was a lot of money back then. I didn't really enjoy the original ships or designs that Lego came up with, I enjoyed making my own vehicles. I just bought both, the new Galaxy Explorer and Benny's Spaceship, I may build both of them once, but I really want to be able to build my own stuff. My mom gave away my Space Legos when I went to college. I had built up a good amount of sets, but always wished for more blocks to go even bigger. I am interested to see what I can build between these two sets, if I get bored, or if I find that I don't really enjoy legos as an adult, I guess my grandson who is 9yrs old will get some more Legos to add to his collection.
Thanks so much Richard for sharing that! That's wild that you got that ship for $32 ...but like you say...that was a ton of money. It came with more stuff back then and those baseplates!! I hope you enjoy building and giving it a try making your own ships. I'm sure your grandson will enjoy whatever he gets as well. I find it relaxing and just fun...makes this old man (me) smile building with Lego. My best to you!
@@DrMcBrick I find the newest legos are more molded to be specific to make that certain build. I bet you remember the original Legos as well. It wasn't until a new neighbor moved in that I saw the Space Legos, that was what made me interested in them again. I hope Lego re introduces the Space Legos again.
@@richardjohnson4696 I agree...that's why I always to add a something of my own to each set. Sometimes I just rebuild them completely. lol. I do remember and used to love getting the Lego Box that was just a bunch of bricks and a few tires and axels each year at Christmas. It was my "big" present each year.
Maybe you built it wrong since I think ramp should slide down freely releasing the buggy to roll out of it freely from what I remember seeing in some video.
Both are great for what they are. 10497 wins but only by a tiny bit. It's a beautiful collector's piece. However, the features and details on Benny's ship are very interestibg and it definetely has a better playability value. But like I said, you can't beat the classic. Even though I wish the shape of 10497's front cockpit was closer to the original one.
You forgot to put the second row 2x1 plates under the front panels inside the cockpit of the galaxy explorer. You're not supposed to see much of the gray pieces behind the steering wheel. Check page 112 of the instructions carefully. I made the same mistake.
Uh, thats not how your supposed to use the ramp on the galaxy explorer. Your supposed to bring the one part all the way down to the ground then pull the ramp itself out. It will automatically drop to the ground and if the buggy is in there it will roll down. No wonder you said it was prone to breaking
I prefer the new one. Makes for a better spaceship. Looks better and more retro. What mistakes from the original did they keep? You mentioned it at 20:50. I built this new one and I don't understand what you mean?
One would probably be the placement of the green and red lights. If intended as navigation lights, these should be green on the right, and red on the left side. But it's now red more to the front, and green on the back.
Well the 2022 Exploer has the 2 detachable engine pods that you didn’t call out that are very comparable to the mini ships on Benny’s ship. And your ramp is not assembled correctly. Drop the back gate.
I definitely think there were canopy issues with the new set. I picked up 2 one day 1 and in each set one of the yellow canopies were warped. I had to put them in super hot water and straighten them put. Come on LEGO. WHATS GOIN ON!?!?!?
Frankly I have no favorite over the other, I like them both. Yes Benny’s Spaceship is a homage set aside from the original Classic Space where the other is a direct modern remake of the CLASSIC Galaxy Explorer but it does NOT stop there. Because if you were to get the set or already have it, it will include two other alternative builds allowing you to rebuild the other minor (medium & small) Galaxy Explorer variants from back then which is AWSOME. But, if you want to you can still implement Benny’s Spaceship by perhaps redesigning the build by getting rid of the middle functions attached to the upper wings and replacing Benny and the crew (minus Space Kitty) and substituting them for any of the white, pink or yellow minifigs from Benny’s Squad pack.
I don’t want to sound rude, but there are a ton of building mistakes on the galaxy explorer. I have the set, and it just hurt with times like the rover being built one stud too long, as well as the screens in the back of the cockpit being on the wrong side. Great video nonetheless, love the comparison! 18:055:403:14
Thanks for pointing these out. I had brain surgery a few months before I built this as I mentioned within the video and description. I wasn’t at my best when building this so some mistakes were made. Thanks for watching and enjoying the video.
I am so sorry for my next comment Did you build it wile doing something else? Maybe did it on a rush Pieces out of place, not pushed all the way, even backwards. It is only my OCD
I built it in a hurry and having brain surgery a few months ago has made me realize I don’t build as well as I used to. No need to be sorry…I appreciate you qualifying it upfront though and asking a legitimate question. Speaks to your good character. 😀 Thanks for watching!
@@DrMcBrick Well in that case i am sorry and i think under those circumstances you did a great job. I just thought you must have been really tired. As i make those same mistakes when i start seeing words and images moving on the page when i look at them :)
Galaxy explorer all the way; it’s a nice, cleaner ship with very genourous room inside that you could easily get maybe 12 astronauts standing or sitting inside without cramming the ship full. There’s also the fact it has 2 alt models to reflect the 3 size ships you could get at the time.
Perhaps just 8 Minifigs, comfortably. Benny's has 3 in the cockpit, 2 in the back compartment and 2 in the fighters (7). GE could have 4 in the cockpit, 3 in the back compartment and 1 on the vehicle in the rear bay.
LL928 is definitely cooler. Benny’s has loads of greebling but it looks terrible from underneath. The new one is much more classy. You shouldn’t have a problem with the ramp at the back. Put everything back in, then unclip the grey/blue part and let it down all the way. Then pull out the big flat black tile and the rover should automatically drive itself out! No breaking at all, the blue/grey part right at the back is meant to unclip.
I agree… I figure me and my half brain now messed up something because it didn’t work right. User error. LOL. Thanks for telling me how to fix it. I appreciate it Caz!
I so now want Bennys space ship now...bet it is just frighteningly expensive. Lego heard you! They now package those delicate cockpit pieces separately to avoid those scratches.
Galaxy Explorer 2022 for me. Thanks for the great video. Not sure if you checked it out but the side engines on the new galaxy explore detach to work as small spacecrafts / flying pods? As shown on the box
I'd prefer the Galaxy Explorer which I built a week ago, It's far more serious design than Benny's SPACESHIP!!!! SPACESHIP!!! SPACESHIP!!! Oh! By the way, the tiny wings between the cockpit of the aircraft is called a canard.
Look, the galaxy explorer is a homage to the specific ship. Whereas Benny's Spaceship is a homage to Lego Space as a whole, even Star Wars. Things like the shooters remind you of the newer age of space, with Space Police 3 or Galaxy Squad or Star Wars. The pipes are something you'd be more likely to see in later Space sets. The two droids are modernizations of the droids you'd see in futuretron days. The dish reminds me of exploriens and the such. Detachable ships are something you'd see a lot in later sets. Specially thinking aboug Ice Planet or blacktron here. There's the bad robot who has a space police visor. Meanwhile the galaxy explorer has one objective only, and it is to be the best version of that ship.
New Galaxy Explorer wins for me. I prefer the Classic space look with innovative use of bricks and plates and only a few special parts for thrusters, wings and stuff. This resulted in a smooth 70s sci-fi feel and is done well with the anniversary ship, despite using complex parts. Benny's spaceship is too haphazard and looks like some of the other LEGO Space lines where it was the complex parts that created the look. Both are great, but I definitely prefer the anniversary set.
I prefer Benny's spaceship for its sleek look and more fun play features. The competition style shooters are always welcome. I also dont speak from a nostalgia standpoint
Benny's ship looks like it would be a fighter or gunship in the classic space universe. Where the Galaxy Explorer would be just that, a lightly armed exploration craft. Maybe the LL929 is a long range escort for the LL928
Gotta say I’m biased but I prefer the Galaxy Explorer. I have both the original and the 2022 versions! Too bad Lego didn’t bring back the Moon base plates!!

Sorry about that…I’m just an old guy who had brain surgery a few months ago lol. But I’m glad to be alive and glad to be building and making videos again. BTW, the white arrows in the original weren’t stickers. No stickers in that era. They were printed 1x2 bricks.
Just realized that Benny's having LL 929 and the galaxy explorer being LL 928 made Benny's basically a next gen galaxy explorer. Though I am sure some people noticed that when Benny's came out.
Oh I know it’s late but hope you recoverd good

I think the Galactic Explorer had to stick to the old “clean and simple” look a lot more than Benny’s. Benny’s was the ship you made with all the space parts you had from the sets. I thought the engines come off it to be little mini scooter type ships?
They do…I missed that part. I’m old. I’ve got half a brain lol
Benny's ship sort of reminds me of those mid 90s space sets like the exploriens space ship, but with the classic space color theme
I love both ships, and I want Lego to make a ton of new Classic Space stuff to go with those.

I prefer the Galaxy Explorer. It looks nicer than Benny’s spaceship, and is a nice throwback for the 90th anniversary.
it's still not a patch on the original though.

I think clever use of parts, wacky designs, and surprising play features are the soul of classic space tbh
I like the galaxy explorer a lot more. Seems cleaner and more adult focused
Benny's ship is mad clean 🔥🔥
@@matts4025nahh it's busy as heck
I regretted not buying Benny's Spaceship after it went out of production. Thankfully the new Galaxy Explorer came out which is so much better for someone who had the original back in the day. Nice clean design but upgraded to make a fantastic tribute to the original.
My OCD kicks in every time i see a piece not properly pressed down
He he, and the missing blue grille piece on the tail :)
You didn't write a lot while you were growing up, did you?
This is a mess of a video. There are massive building errors. The video is filled with factual errors. Many features are completely glossed over.
bennys space ship every time, the original galactic explorer although like most lego of the time was primitive, it was one of the classic space lego sets we all wanted, and just like the galaxy commander, or the robot command centre you really cannot go wrong if you have certain sets from back in the day, and while this new version of the galaxy explorer is no doubt put together better, and is a better set generally than the original, my heart is still in love with the classic sets.
How have you had the galaxy explorer ramp break mine hasn't broke like that can you say how it broke so I can avoid it?
I built this model a few months out of having brain surgery…at that point, I really wasn’t 100% back to my Lego game. So there are a few things I didn’t build correctly on it and the ramp was one of them. You shouldn’t have any probs with it like I did. Mine was user error. lol
I have both and I largely prefer the Galaxy Explorer ( design , built etc)
10497 is better build experience over all but I agree the lack of separate packaging of the canopies is a problem
Lego do it every time they use those pieces. I cringe every time i get a Tie fighter that has 2 or 3 of them from an older set lol. I just hope they survived ok in the box. So far so good :)
SPACESHIP
Galaxy explorer wins. Simple & iconic silhouetts and color contrast was enough to win us.
Not to mention more watered down build actually allows for more potential for alternate builds!
When every part of a model screams for attention like in 2000s legos, you get distracted from the model very fast.
Too much detailing makes silhouettes complex, relies on many specialized parts, and limits your ability to re-purpose model for other builds, unless you have lots of bulk lying around.
So yes.. LEGO please just focus on BASICS FIRST, then worry about details or eye catchers.
Lots of areas on your builds not assembled properly on connected correct. Just an observation.
Yeah… I built it right after my surgery and wasn’t on my game.
It's becoming more and more of reality that planes can be used as spaceships in real life so having a spaceship look like a plane isn't too bad
Agree!
LL 929 Spaceship Spaceship Spaceship
I think I like Benny's Spaceship better because it was my first classic space themed set.
It just makes me happy seeing this guy does what he loves
Thanks!
It's just too bad that they didn't number the new one as LL 930 just to show that the ship is a newer, more modern series.
But then, this is sort of like the 1979 version is "The Original Enterprise" and this one is like "The Motion Picture". Same ship name and number, but one is more upgraded.
I think you must’ve messed up with the ramp because I find it very easy and satisfying open it
I did.
YMMV.)
Great analysis. Thanks!
Definitely the Galaxy Explorer, although it would be brilliant to see a MOC of Benny’s spaceship bought to the same scale and detailing levels.
Oooo that would be cool
Galaxy Explorer for me... Also I'm not exactly a big fan of stickers. Prints all the way! 😁🤣
I think one good way to describe the difference is that one is built how lego designs their sets, whereas the other is designed how a child would build a moc. Both of which are awesome, but one has more intent behind it for durability, and style, where as the other is just a cool Spaceship spaceship space ship
I just bought this set last week (Space Explorer) and it should be here by Thursday.
Have fun building it!
I like thme both. I think they go well with each other
Benny's to me feels more like a homage to ALL of Lego space the colors of the og Legoland sets detail and shape that's more fitting of blacktron 2 or M tron, glowing bits like space police, it's all of space
I like the new one better. They did a beautiful job recreating the classic and I love the printed pieces. It looks fantastic.
It's not as good as the original when you consider what little pieces that needed though and it had one large piece for the front Planet Logo plus the front opened smoothly unlike the new one which uses a ratchet style piece so it is really jerky in motion to open the cockpit.
I like the space explorer space ship because it is cleaner, comes with prints and it comes with more astronauts. It is a nice blast from the past.
Both are different interpretations modernising the old ships, i like both equally i think
Yep Benny's follows the oldschool blocky layout of the build but with the convenience of a plethora of modern parts, Galaxy Explorer takes the oldschool builds and increases the detail and intricacy
I love them both but if I could afford it I would get the 90th Anniversary set
Personaly I prefer the Galaxy Expoler. One of the coolest set what Lego renewed. Lots of briliant building technic in the set, and has no guns on the ship because don't need it. The classic space sets haven"t got guns or other weapons, because that time Lego made the sets freindlier, focusing the space exploring, not the fighting. Good old days :)
Everyone I know that got the new Galaxy Explorer set said their cockpits came scratched. Including my two sets.
I don’t have this set yet. What exactly are the mistakes the Galaxy Explorer has that the original ones had??
The red and green lights are not in correct spots
I love the 90 years Galaxy Explorer so much! Absolutely prefer it over Benny's spaceship! Even though it took me quite some time to get used to the huge "spoiler" on the rear. But it has all that I ever wanted in a spaceship as a kid. Even sleeping berths and so many displays!
The only small thing is that I think they should have taken a different number, it's not LL928 because that one's from 1979, and Benny's spaceship is LL929 ... so maybe LL938 would have been perfect :)
I agree!
I love this set we need one or two a year in the Icons line same with the castle theme and maybe pirates.
Pirates would be great!
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks!
You’re right. I did. User error lol.
Both are equally awesome :)
8:14 Jeff Goldblum possessed him for 5seconds 😂
🤣🤣
LL928 i live most
Both are great for what they are.
This isn’t even close: the galaxy explorer takes the cake
You forgot to put the second row 2x1 plates under the front panels inside the cockpit of the galaxy explorer. You're not supposed to see much of the gray pieces behind the steering wheel. Check page 112 of the instructions carefully. I made the same mistake.
Thanks. I realized that I had finished the video… totally screwed it up. Lol. guess the brain surgery messed with my building skill. Lol.
Same with Benny's Spaceship. Yellow cockpit side windows aren't alternate to each other. 😉
Great video! I like your style.
Thanks... I'm just a guy who likes Lego. My vids are un-polished and try to show a real side of us builders...mistakes, user-error and all lol
Sorry to hear this. I wish LEGO would package all canopies differently.
@@DrMcBrick love the set though!!!!
18:05 5:40 3:14
Thanks for pointing these out. I had brain surgery a few months before I built this as I mentioned within the video and description. I wasn’t at my best when building this so some mistakes were made. Thanks for watching and enjoying the video.
I am so sorry for my next comment
Did you build it wile doing something else? Maybe did it on a rush
Pieces out of place, not pushed all the way, even backwards.
The Galaxy Explorer is it for me. It looks so more sturdy and more Spacy 👍
No sticker on the original but a printed piece . I prefer the new 928, but benny's spaceship has an agressive look
Witch pleases me too.
the new one is better. i finally get the red suit man. now i can put this, the book, and bennys squad together
Dude. The small yellow cockpit windows are reversed on one side.
Thanks
The original one looks better than the remodeled LL928.
Galaxy Explorer 2022 for me. Thanks for the great video. Not sure if you checked it out but the side engines on the new galaxy explore detach to work as small spacecrafts / flying pods? As shown on the box
Thanks. And I totally missed that! That’s great to know.
Galaxy explorer... I did have the original when I was a kid though so I bound to like this version more. 😁
were you judging them fairly with the non-functioning ramp and not highlighting the expanding wing function on Benny's ship?
I prefer Benny's spaceship for its sleek look and more fun play features. The competition style shooters are always welcome. I also dont speak from a nostalgia standpoint
Benny's ship looks like it would be a fighter or gunship in the classic space universe. Where the Galaxy Explorer would be just that, a lightly armed exploration craft.
Maybe the LL929 is a long range escort for the LL928
Agreed!
Gotta say I’m biased but I prefer the Galaxy Explorer. I have both the original and the 2022 versions! Too bad Lego didn’t bring back the Moon base plates!!
Strange on those helmet chins. I have almost all of the 1978-1983 space Lego sets and I never broke one of those.
Cool video! Smash them parts down good tho!! (That’s me being OCD) rock on!
Thanks!
