    I love how they made this new Galaxy Explorer essentially a Creator 3 in 1 set. It just adds so much more value to it as a whole. I’m definitely sticking with the big model when I eventually get mine but it’s nice to know there is other options for the people that want them.

    It’s great that these alt builds were provided. That being said, would have been even greater if split out in such a way that you could build both smaller craft (officially).

      on the other hand.... No design compromises for the alts. they aren't cobbled together with just the leftovers

    I’m thrilled this set exists with official alternate instructions. I had most of the original US 3-digit space sets back in 1978 when I was 10. Never did get the original 497/928 set or the small 918. To see these now, just wow! On the wish list all over again. Now, where is that giant Sears Wish Book?

  • @leguac4187
    @leguac4187 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    i like this compromise. obviously, we couldn't get an entire wave of ships for the 90th anniversary, but if you bought 3 galaxy explorer sets, you could build an entire classic space fleet!

  • @viperson9818

    They really nailed the 924 ....except for the print ....adding 4 extra bricks with the according numbers would have been very cool - but absolutely nothing to moan about!! The 918 always looked like a little insect (mosquito ?) to me with the cockpit bordering right to the wing edges. The new model doesn´t catch the characteristics that good - but hey - I think it´s the best set this year and one can´t even complain about the price...pretty rare lately.

    I redesigned the 918 version to have working gear and also the pilot sits up. (Yes i bought 3 of the GE. I'm a space guy) I also changed the nose of the 924 to match 928. It's space. It's amazing space.

    It's really cool that these alternates were offered, so you could build reimaginings of all three classic ships. If you still have the Classic Space sets from your old reviews, it would be cool to see them compared to these as well.

    I love all three the largest is my favourite, I love livable space ship, the small one is a cool and unique design. The middle one is cool but I think it's the worst. It isn't as unique as the small one and feels like just a smaller version of the galaxy explorer sold at lower price point, which is very much accurate to the original in fact this one is (in my opinion) the most accurate one. If it would Sold separately it would probably be the best as a cheaper alternative you can buy two or three as a small fleet or if you don't have money to buy the actual set

    • @TheStormingmonkey
      @TheStormingmonkey ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you built the middle one? because I have both big and middle and the middle is my favorite

    • @n_ex13
      @n_ex13 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheStormingmonkey currently I don't I it build for a few days just because I wanted to give each one a chance. I just don't like it as much like the small one looks so unique and weirdly powerful, as well as having the function with the droid and I am just biased to ships with interior as well as my mother giving me her childhood explorer because she did want to buy lego for me before I reach the age of 4, therefore me having nostalgia for the original. the middle one is still amazing but you know one of them has to be the worst and by process of elimination if two are some of my favourite lego ships or sci-fi in general, I just don't like as much

    those builds are great.
    As someone that have only seen LEGO prices go up and up these past years (I mean the DeLorean for 170 euros was pretty tough, and as a Star Wars fan, seeing models well over the 40s when 5/6 years back they would have been sold for like 20 is saddening)
    When I saw the early images of the galaxy explorer, I was like "oh this will surely be like $150 but I'll happily pay for it" then saw it was "only" a hundred bucks and it made it all the more worth it to get. But REALLY the thing that I find astounding with this set is that you can build the 924 replica, AND NOT FEEL SCAMMED AT ALL, if they released the 924 as a $99 set I would have probably pay for it as well.
    That just shows that our perception of Lego prices and value is kinda biased. I think that one Lego commercial dude was right "If you want us to stop increasing the prices, you'd have to stop buying them".
    Anyway, awesome set through and through, I loved building it, seeing the little details thaat took me way back when I was playing Lego space as a kid

    If you plan *beforehand* to build both the new 924 and the new 918, then there are a lot of invisible parts that can be "borrowed" from the 924 to be put to use in highly visible or structural locations on the 918. Prominent examples are trans-red 1x2 plates, and some of the technic elements - you can replace many of those with 1x2 plates of any color, and you can replace pretty much all of the technic elements with different colors, and some of them with different configurations (for example a brick and a pin instead of a brick with a built-in pin). If you do that, and are okay with some subtle changes to the 918, it's possible to complete both ships with one 10497 set plus only $20-$30 worth of additional parts.

    • @natbarmore
      @natbarmore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a collection already, a lot of the 340 “missing” pieces are pretty common-especially for the hidden ones that you could use any color from your collection.
      But there are a bit over a dozen visible rare or unique parts, including 4 prints unique to this set. And with recent pieces not being put up on Bricks & Pieces, that’s where the expense is.

    I fully agree and bought two sets only, there are so many parts left with the 924 that you can built a 918 with added parts easily. And i also modified it that i have landing gears on the 918 too, which i desperately missed on the instruction. For some experienced builders you have so much fun to modify the built accordingly.

    I finally ordered the additional parts to make all 3 from 2 sets. You need an additional 330+ pieces. It cost $35 on pick a brick and then another $10 or so on bricklink for the printed parts and a couple others not available on Lego’s site. It was worth it to me.

    Hi Jang,Great Video showing all 3 alternatives of the Galaxy Explorer.
    I think Lego has done a fantastic job with the new version, I still have all my 3 original Galaxy Explorers that i was given as presents as a child way back in 1979 which i still have on display today for the 928, 924 and the 918.
    I haven't received my new Explorer yet but very keen to build all 3 alternatives, so i can placed them next to my original 3 sets ,however buying the 3rd box to build the smaller version here in Australia is getting very expensive especially when ill be using half the box or less to build, But seeing how you built your small one using other extra parts to complete is excellent, however i would luv to know what was the extra pieces that you substituted to build as i think what you done a looks great and i can order the extra peices or even see what i have in my own collection of left over parts.
    Would be great if they would continue and re-release more of the original classic sets.
    Anyway Luv ya Channel being watching for few years now. Ray Adelaide/Australia.

    It is somewhat disappointing that one kit cannot build the two alternate sets simultaneously, though its only the bigger of the two that really seems well designed. I mean the smaller craft looks like it was made exclusively from the leftover pieces of the larger build.

    A smaller modern 918, that could have been built fully with the leftover parts when building the 924 would have been amazing. As well as having extra printed bricks with the correct markings for each. But still, this is an amazing set, even without any official alternate builds. It just would have made it an even more iconic set than it already is.

    the biggest problem with this set is that the wings very obviously have turbine engines on them apparent from the compressor fins visible on the front. Turbine engines don't work in space. They have the have air/atmosphere to compress in the turbine. On the original 928 model they could very easily be liquid fuel rockets attached to the wings.... Hard to say that with this one

    You mentioned that once you built the medium, you still needed a lot of your own bricks to finish the small. About what percent did you have to fill in with your own bricks?
    Or alternatively, do you think there are enough leftover pieces after making the medium, you'd have enough to work with to make a somewhat comparable ship with JUST the leftovers?

    • @natbarmore
      @natbarmore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2/3. If you try to build both just from a copy of 10497, you’re missing 2/3 of the pieces for the smaller one.
      • The set has ~1250 pieces.
      • The medium version used ~800.
      • The small version uses ~500.
      • However, there are 340 pieces from the original set that are needed in both versions. So if you try to build both, about 2/3 of the small version’s pieces are unavailable.
      Most of the double-used pieces are fairly common, so if you have a medium collection you’ll probably have them; if you have a large collection you’ll almost certainly have them.
      A bit over a dozen pieces are relatively rare, or unique to this set, including 3 prints that you need more of than the original set provides (the LL928 bricks and the classic space logo tile-though obviously you might prefer to leave the LL928 off anyway, or substitute an LL918 1x4 if you have them).

    • @natbarmore
      @natbarmore ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and the main thing you’ll be missing to build your own MOC instead of the official smaller alternative: wings. The medium version uses almost all the wing pieces from the set.

    If it was the middle one for cheaper I would buy it. Big one is too big.

    Prefer the middle sized build, the double canopy and large side engine design of the largest build just doesn't do it for me.
