The theory that an owl being confused for mothman is even more credible when you look at a picture of an owl folding it's wings. The drawings show the eyes below the tops of the wings and where the torso of a human would be, along with how tiny the wings look. An owl folding it's wings perfectly fits the descriptions and the drawings.

@@morganbanefort181 How were they going 100 mph on a fucking country backroad in a car from the 60s? The only cars that can do that are purpose built or modified Rally cars, no production car has ever been capable of attaining those speeds on a country road. Not to mention the owl left after a few seconds, so are you seriously saying that a car from the 60s accelerared from 0-100 mph on a country backroad in a few seconds, that'd make it faster than a fucking F1 car.
You didn't bring up the eye witnesses saying the moth man didn't flap its wings, which matches with owl flight patterns, since they rarely flap their wings to avoid making noise
If you've ever come upon an owl while driving down a lonely, winding country road, they can appear GIGANTIC and absolutely terrifying. When I was a kid, we were driving home late one night and a Great Horned Owl flew out of the woods right in front of the car. It looked bigger than our '69 Pontiac station wagon - no lie. My mom screamed, she was so scared. I can see how someone driving up on a Snowy Owl late one night would freak out and think it was some sort of "monster".
Yasmin J Foster I like how it’s not looking directly at the viewer. Gives off a feeing it knows the viewer is there yet it chooses to focus on something else like it’s just not afraid of the viewer. Either that or the viewer is one of the only people that snuck up on it. Awesome drawing
Supposedly a creature with all of the mothman traits, was seen days before the Chernobyl accident, outside the facility, and by rescue (armed forces) pilots, afterwards, flying around and above the reactor. Also in a mine somewhere, before it collapsed. The miners said it tried to run them out, or warn them the day before and that it ran on two legs. West Virginia= moonshine, Russia= vodka. Coincedence?....who knows, but it is kinda crazy.
There are reports during several wars of angels appearing in the sky during battles. Perhaps, Mothman and the Blackbird of Chernobyl are illustrations of paranormal activity/events rather than cryptozoology. Both owls and blackbirds are familar creatures in folklore.
They were actually going to call him Batman because it looks more likes bat, but they didn't want to mess with DC comics so they called it mothman instead.

Just because the popular interpretation is different from the artist who designed it without knowing about the others doesn't make it ridiculous.

Years ago when our children were very young my husband and I were taking them for a walk through the woods next to our vacation home. A huge creature flew directly over our heads. If it had been dark and we had been young and or fanciful we could have said mothman flew over our heads. We realized that it was an owl and as soon as it was past us we could see that it was an owl. We must have gotten too close to its nest. When you described the creature and from the picture i was sure that they had seen an owl.

Mothman is one of my favorite Cryptids. That being said, I think it's complete bunk. The lore is extremely spooky and interesting though, and it makes awesome fiction. I agree that it's likely owls. I remember when I was young and had my first car, a volkswagon beetle, I was driving at night and an owl swooped down and flew right along the contour of my car, front to back. For a second there all I could see what red dots coming at me, then for a split second it's wingspan completely covered the entire width of my windshield. Scared the living wits out of me. I can easily see how something like that could be mistaken for something a little more exotic.

I always heard of Mothman's relation to the bridge collapse not being malicious, he didn't cause it. I'm familiar with the theory he came to warn humans of the bridge's imminent collapse.
No way they were driving that fast on a dark country road in a 1960's car. They definitely didn't go 100 MPH as claimed. Even a professional rally driver would be hard pressed to do that.
DarkINsides06 the Jersey Devil is very horrifying, or at least the story about it is, what the hell could it be if the police department shot it multiple times and did no damage to it, and I wanna know where it vanished off to. I don’t think TREY could explain it.
Mothman and England’s Owlman is my favourite legend. I don’t care if he’s legitimately a monster or just a big owl. It’s a cool story and a seriously cool concept. Owls are amazing animals so for me it’s a win win situation real or not 😂.
I was driving down a dirt road about 10 miles from tnt and saw a large great horned owl eating a rabbit in the middle of the road. That suddenly popping into your headlights out in the middle of nowhere definitely makes it appear much larger and more terrifying. I used to do a lot of late night catfishing in the point pleasant tnt area and I actually saw something I am unable to explain that was mentioned in the mothman prophecies book. sightings of floating glowing lights along the rivers in that area are very common and I witnessed one once while late night catfishing. I saw a tree start glowing and then a floating ball of light came out of it and slowly floated away among the trees. whole process took about ten minutes. ball of light was about two feet across, moving about twenty feet high, and moved about five mph. It was an amazing sight and I can verify that I wasn't all that drunk.
Guys, we need a proper name for this series. My vote's on "cryptozoolograph," the written record for hidden animals. Also, you should totally do a thing like in Cryptozoologicon, where after debunking the animal you say, "but if it *did* exist, it's biology and evolutionary history would be something like this," and then you create a ridiculous but still more plausible creature. OR, if you're super cool, you could have like a contest where your viewers create one of those creatures, and then on the next episode you give a shout-out to the one you liked the most. Sorry, I may be getting over-excited, but cryptids are one of my favorite subjects.
Ridiculous-but-still-more-plausible creature suggestion: The Mothman is a highly evolved species of owl which feeds mainly on other species of owl. Standing at an average of about 1 meter high, it is entirely nocturnal, and spends the day in dense patches of trees, camouflaged in with pigment that ranges from white to dark grey. Because of its large size, it must rear its young at the bases of trees instead of at higher branches, preferably near rivers. The Mothman is considered to be relatively intelligent, and it is the only known bird to have a "funeral ritual". When a fellow Mothman dies, the Mothmen ritualistically throw its body into a nearby river, thus accounting for the fact that no Mothman remains have survived for study. Their behaviour also includes a cooperative nesting, wherein groups of parents will raise their chicks together, in order to be more efficient at bringing home food. Its nests are always well-camouflaged to deter attackers. Another interesting attribute of the Mothman is that its wing feathers extend entirely down its body, in a way similar to bats. This causes the extra lift necessary to hold up such a large creature in flight. Civilians sighting the Mothman are generally not aware of these wing extensions, and assume them to be part of the body, causing reports to have a much larger body and smaller wingspan than is actually present. The Mothman, sadly, is probably no longer with us. By the time of its first sighting, it was already a critically endangered species, with a population of around a dozen and an adult population of approximately 4. The final nail in the Mothman's coffin was the collapse of Silver Bridge, under which a nest of several individuals was situated. Although some specimens survived the collapse, as evidenced by the removal of all members of the nest, it is not considered likely that any of the young survived. With at most a single breeding pair remaining in 1967, the Mothmen are certainly no more.

Minor correction regarding high beam head lights. 14:30 They were invented long before 1966. High/low beam lights were introduced for automobiles in 1924. By 1954, Cadillac introduced the first auto controlled high beam lights. I used to drive a 1950 Chevrolet and it most assuredly had a foot switch to control the high beam lights, which were standard well before 1950.

You know, since I live in WV my family has had some history with moth man. My mawmaw (grandmother) always told me that 10-20 minutes before the silver bridge fell, her dad drove across it, pretty crazy
Cryptozoology doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Yes it's a one in two billion chance there is anything even remotely like what people talk about out there, but we've found crazier things before. When tempered with the knowledge that you are probably running after nothing the study isn't so bad. It's more like reality assurance. We're making sure we didn't miss something because we didn't check enough.
I love to use cryptzoology to explore zoology and anthropology-what animals are the legends based on, what do the legends have to do, etc. Guess that's true for mythology in general.
There are certain veins of cryptozoology that are very matute and scientific that does what you say, second guessing things to cover the possibility of over looking undiscovered fauna. But the large majority of "cryptozoologists" are not studying as much as believing folktales. It should be a study but sadly those not actually using science devalue it as a discipline.
I dunno man. My Grandpa thinks that Bigfoot is real. He and G-ma live in the forest, and he just hinted at it, like it was no big deal. I believe this dude. In my views? Either it's incredibly smart, like "beam me up, scotty." level of smart, a demon from some Judeo-christian myth, a HUGE hairy crazy dude, a really really rare giant monkey, a giant monkey ghost, or a hallucination. Grandpa's only drug is Jesus, and even then he takes him in moderation compared to others who share his faith at the state he lives at. His mind is sharp, seriously calm, incredibly dry humored and mannered, and doesn't take himself or life too seriously. Alright, Gramps might not have seen Bigfoot, but there was this mundanity to the subject of conversation and reluctance to tell me what he went through. Reluctance isn't the best word here, but I got nothin else, more like disbelief in what was coming out of his mouth. He saw something weird.
As a fan of all that is mysterious and supernatural, would love to see more of this series. I do like your way of explaining the unknown with actual facts and logic. I can't even count how many times I've watched this (along with the whole cryptozoology playlist). There's just something very addicting about these videos.
Your assessment of gigantism in birds is not correct. Although they have shorter lifespans, they do exist in nature and often reach maturity. Additionally, growth hormones used in cattle are present in afterbirth of calves that is often eaten by birds, which can alter their growth in unhealthy ways. I--and members of my family--have personally seen turkey vultures of sizes larger than have ever been documented and I believe it is due to animals eating remains of livestock treated with growth hormones. In 1995 and in the mid 2000's a member of my family and I witnessed a turkey vulture that was approximately the same size as an Andean condor. I do not care if you believe me. However, I am telling the truth.
I go fishing daily with a 5-foot crane named Ridley (Metroid) by a river in Ma. We are legitimately friends. Huge language barrier but the bird has gotten so used to my daily presence, that we have established a system to warn each other of outside presences. The bird follows me until I am off the dark trail at the end of the day and then goes back to the Riverside when I reach my vehicle. We both do the same thing everyday, but he understands I am out there to pass time while I know he knows that I know, he is in it as a lifestyle. Survival. I respect him more than any human I know. Ridley is the man.
For starters, the usage of growth hormones in meat production is nothing more than a myth since they are incredibly expensive to use in the amount of animals that kind of industries use for human consumption. Second you base your argument off "over-sized flying birds" in your own word of mouth, not real evidence. And lastly, most of your argument can be treated as a common cryptid sighting, lacks anything that can be use a proof.
Pretty much an owl, I encountered one while driving on a secluded road at night. It even was pretty curious and followed me about ~100 meters while maintaing a speed of 70-80kph. Humans tend to exaggerate the size of light objects in the dark, so a snowy owl would be plausible. If you take a look at pictures of young owls, you can easily see seemingly strange leg - body ratio

This is genuinely interesting. I support the idea of this being a series Btw, I'd be very interested in assisting you with BigFoot. Living in a reserve, I've seen some things.... and know some too
Later sightings might not necessarily be deliberate fabrications, I think it's very possible that more than one person has seen a big owl, and after hearing the original story though that their owl also was a mothman. Many people seeing many different owls would also explain why reports vary about mothman's color and size.

On the wingspan... I don't disagree with you on any point. Rock solid. I would like to add that unless a person uses measurements on a daily basis, judging size, especially at night, is nearly impossible. The claim of a ten foot wingspan is probably a gross miscalculation brought on by misjudged distance and leading questions by investigators.
Let me just say that I genuinely do empathize and sympathize with the teens in the original sighting. Kudos to them for actually returning to the scene to make sure they actually saw it! I really like Mothman as a cryptid. I know that most cryptids are unlikely to exist (although canine Chupocabra intruiges me), but Mothman is just a fun design!
One night getting into my car, I turned on my headlights and a barn owl a few yards away immediately was exposed and bolted upwards. I was so startled and the creature’s wings seemed so impossibly large in the second I saw it that I don’t doubt one could have caused the first mothman report.
I love how every flying cryptid has a ten foot wingspan. Giant thunderbird that tries to fly off with children , 10 foot wingspan. Scary moth thing that's a harbinger of doom, 10 foot wingspan. I think people dont realize how small 10 feet is when it comes to flying animals. I had a couple white pelicans fly over me at work today. They have 10 foot wingspans and they're no where near 6 feet tall. Also funny how everything that walks upright is 8 to 10 feet tall. People see something have no frame of reference for the height and when asked say "uhhhh what's a big human seven feet okay it was definitely bigger than that I'll say 8 to 10 feet"
Could you do a video on a theory of a mosasaur/mosasaur relative existing to this day, and whether it could be plausible or not. I know they are extinct but I just wanna hear about the possiblity....
+Jack Mills Not just sightings and tracks but sheep killed by a creature with a unique dental pattern which is that of the Tasmanian Wolf (I prefer Wolf to Tiger because its a perfect example of parallel evolution filling a role in the ecosystem, that of the wolf/canid type predator)
Mothman has always been my favorite cryptid. The way I always thought of it, he didn't _cause_ the bridge collapse so much as he was an omen of something. I like to think he was there to warn everybody, but they didn't realize it. I don't doubt he was really a big ol' owl, but it's fun to entertain the fantasy.

Wasn't an owl

Who?
Ridiculous-but-still-more-plausible creature suggestion:
The Mothman is a highly evolved species of owl which feeds mainly on other species of owl.

The problem most people have with cryptozoology is that if often is not based in evidence and is instead based entirely on eyewitness claims.

Anonymous Comments 2014 “however, i am telling the truth.” Said every liar, ever.

What does living on a reserve have to do with Big Foot?
It was an owl you dumb fuck.
Karnage Fails what he said had nothing to do with Mothman so chill out
The Airside woosh
Good Doggo 😂😂😂
Can you do a video about Lizard Man?
+RunRobotRun911 Hisss?
+RunRobotRun911 Lizard men what lizard men? [calls a vague yet menacing goverment agency to tell them "They know"]
+Arda Poda the lizard men are real. (just check leafy's channel)
you cant hide from me lizard people -_- i will find you...
+Jubei Johnson reptilians and lizard man are different things you know
Later sightings might not necessarily be deliberate fabrications, I think it's very possible that more than one person has seen a big owl, and after hearing the original story though that their owl also was a mothman. Many people seeing many different owls would also explain why reports vary about mothman's color and size.
The mothman was not an owl
After reading the witnesses reports and doing extensive research on the case the owl theory just doesn't fit in my opinion
1 the witnesses knew what an owl/sandhill crane looked like
1. They got a good look at the creature
2. At one point it chased and kept up with the Scarberry's and Mallettes when they were driving a around a hundred miles no large bird is that fast
3. In a couple of accounts it went straight up in the air no large bird can do that either
4. Doesn't explain all the other strangeness like the men in black and the ufos sight
I'm real dammit!
This video makes several mistakes
One night getting into my car, I turned on my headlights and a barn owl a few yards away immediately was exposed and bolted upwards. I was so startled and the creature’s wings seemed so impossibly large in the second I saw it that I don’t doubt one could have caused the first mothman report.

@@waspanimations7037 it was not a owl
@@morganbanefort181 Proof?
@@waspanimations7037 it does not fit the witnesses descriptions and they know what a owl looks like
I can recommend you some books
Mothman isn’t real.
However, MothMant is very real indeed.
Part moth, part man, part ant.
MothMant.
Scoff if you dare.
Almost heaven, WEST VIRGINIA!!!
Your science and logic pleases me. Great video, thank you.
+silviogesell1 Thank you :D
Could you do a video on a theory of a mosasaur/mosasaur relative existing to this day, and whether it could be plausible or not.
I know they are extinct but I just wanna hear about the possiblity....
- White
- Owl eyes
- Squeaks like an owl
- Has wings and seems to have no head
Obviously a decomposing basking shark
do you think the tasmaina tiger is still alive? theres been many sightings of this amazing animal.
Yyyeeeesssss I do
+Jack Mills Not just sightings and tracks but sheep killed by a creature with a unique dental pattern which is that of the Tasmanian Wolf (I prefer Wolf to Tiger because its a perfect example of parallel evolution filling a role in the ecosystem, that of the wolf/canid type predator)
+dean counts well isn't it a marsupial
I miss my young and oblivious days where i would fall for every “hoax” the world seemed so mysterious back then..
The mothman was not an owl
@@morganbanefort181 the scientific evidence shows it is an owl and your pseudoscience doesn’t make it real
