6:44 Stories of cryptids being put on display are actually fairly common, the problem is the stories are also very old and the specimens have of course since disappeared. I recall the long necked seal, Washington's eagle, Dodu, Nandi bear, lau, orange breasted penguin, waitoreke, Jersey gator and giant orangutan were all allegedly sent to museums or exhibited at one point or another
The wolf that was thought to be the Beast of Gévaudan in 1767 had the body brought to Paris by the hunters but was discarded because it was rotting in the summer sun and smelled awful
This is interesting, because I went to the Mothman Museum last year for the festival but didn't recall seeing any owl. After calling the museum today, I confirmed that the owl is posted on top of the drink refrigerator in the gift shop! Not inside the actual exhibits of the museum. Strange but true.
You'd think the museum would set a sign next to the owl, with a caption saying something to the effect of "The Real Mothman(!?)", and an explanation of how the owl got there. But then, that might slightly take the piss out of the rest of the museum.
To be fair, it's probably only there to show to people who ask the staff directly about it. The economy of Point Pleasant relies on a lot of mothman tourism, and showing of things like the owl rather than the giant metal winged humanoid statue might make tourists lose interest.
@@yat282 That is true, but also so dumb. As if folklore and legends as a tourist attraction isn't already good. As if people showing up in Hamelin are like "Wait the Pied Piper wasn't even real?"
This is kind of heartwarming in a way thats difficult to describe. Its a rare instance where the hysteria surrounding a cryptid was completely grassroots and not solely fueled by drummed up fear or popular media at the time. Snowy owls are such distinct looking birds and Mothman might have been the first sighting of one that most West Virginian's would've heard about at the time. Considering that teenagers had the initial encounter in the middle of the night, who could've honestly expected them NOT to misidentify it? Finally getting to see the animal that revitalized an entire small town's tourism industry genuinely puts a smile on my face. I would definitely love to hear more of these stories!
These short little videos about weird shit you found while traveling are honestly really nice. I'd definitely be open to having more of them inbetween the bigger videos
Mothman statue is absolutely caked up. I am commenting this before I watched so if it's brought up, then hell yeah. It wasn’t brought up, now I just seem weird.
Lol, it's okay, that was the first thing I was thinking when I saw the part with the statue & had a feeling at least somebody had to have mentioned it. And here you are, having beat me to it. ;)
I actually live in Charleston WV and had no idea that the owl still existed 😢 I frequent Point pleasant often and never knew about the farm museum lol....
Snowy owls will rarely have winter seasons when they travel much further south than expected. In either the winter of 2012-13 or 2013-14 (I don't recall which year now), I spotted one while doing an avian survey near Bloomington Illinois. That same winter they were documented as far south as Florida. I don't know if they ever figured out why snowy owls do these weird migrations some years, but one ending up in WV maybe isn't that surprising.
Yes! More short form travel story videos (or other subjects) in between your larger projects. Believe me I love the multi hour TH-cam documentaries as much as everyone else, but there’s something so lovely and nostalgic about easily digestible 9-15 minute videos like this.
I was not mentally prepared for the twists and turns in this story. I expected a nice summary of a trip to Point Pleasant, and while I did get that, I also got “Mothman is dead he was shot and killed in the dead of night in 1966 here’s his corpse.”
It is nice that museums are not afraid to break the legend a bit by revealing that the mythical creatures may have been misidentified, but that also adds more credence to the hysteria of the time. I love cryptids so much.
Snowy owls are an irruptive species. Some winters large numbers migrate very far south. I don’t know for sure whether the winter 1966-67 had an irruption, but a snowy owl that far south is hardly unprecedented
This is a neat little video! I wanted to write a couple comments because I adore these recent travelogue videos & wanted to do my part boosting it in the algorithm.
I live about an hour south of Point Pleasant in the city of Huntington. I was stoked to see that you uploaded a video about some of our local folklore though, and while I’ve never been to Sutton or Thurmond, I would love to hear more about your adventures in my home state! Snowy owls will often migrate south in winter and pop up in the Eastern US-it’s usually the more northern states but it’s not unheard of for them to show up further south depending on conditions.
