Man I can't wait to hear what you have to say for the Lockness monster because I think it goes by the same thing as moth man though I'm not against the idea that something could be living there but the idea that a aquatic reptile still living at this time just seems ridiculous to me
+Xekzelstriker Yeah, and even if plesiosaurids did survive, they would most likely adapted and live in the oceans instead of small lakes. Most lake serpent sightings are caused by larger fish and sometimes seals~
Xekzelstriker The thing with Loch Ness is that it also cant sustain a population of larger predators due to its lacking ecosystem. It simply doesn't have enough large fish to feed the plesisoaurids.
Dude, that was a really cool evolutionary tree. Thanks. :D By the way, my name is technically The B a s i k Show (as in, the opposite of acidic, but with a k) but The Basilisk Show (which is a lizard I think) sounds cooler, anyways.
I loved your comments on how alien lifeforms would NOT look like anything here on earth. Finally someone who also thinks this same thing! This is why I love your videos trey.
I picture mothman as a very large species of owl, with long, narrow legs, a wingspan of about 25 feet, highly reflective eyes that shine red, and it has a small beak that is usually covered by the feathers of its flat face. It does in fact have a neck and head, and it can rotate about 160 degrees around, and it has a light grey ruff around its neck, white feathers with black wingtips, chest, and undersides of its wings (as it will help for sneaking up on its prey, due to it hunting from the air), and its wings are speckled with brown spots of feathers on top. it is primarily a scavenger but also eats plenty of live prey, such as deer and sometimes it will fly over lakes or rivers and pluck fish out of the water with its long legs, its legs are hollow to reduce weight and it has claws on its wings for gripping ledges, trees, or prey, it cuts open carcasses with its sharp talons, and is known to perch up high to nest and search for prey. scientific name: Brevicollis Corax common name (s): Mothman, Bridgestalker, White reaper, Northern marabou, Kings condor, Snow Bat, Castle Owl Inspirations: Snowy owl, Barn owl, Marabou Stork
Yo I'm a little late but the word you're looking for is "Anthropocentric" when you said human centric. I'm almost finished watching every single video on your channel. great stuff my dude
Ah, so those creepy eyes were you! You managed to creep me out with them in Part 1! Well done! (Though I'm really not that hard to scare so it's probably not a massive victory...ah well!)
Man I wish there were vids like these in my browsing history when I was a kid. I used to scare myself silly by watching videos of ghosts and cryptids and stuff and ended up with a pretty big fear of aliens despite not even believing in them. It's a really great video and I look forward to seeing more. :D
Love the vids man! I checked your channel 10 minutes ago and then 3 later you just uploaded this! Weird. Anyway, I appreciate how you are open you are to the unknown yet rooted to science. Would love to have a conversation about zoology with you if I ever got the chance! I look forward to you discussing some of the the more well documented cryptics. Cheers from Hawaii! High regards Nick Groshart
To be fair, though, kudos to the real photographer for possibly saving lives by literally catching a piece of the bridge falling off, if you catch something like that then the people in charge have to do something about the faulty bridge. I wish we could find out more about the photographs themselves because I find the story behind the photos would be interesting in and of themselves.
It’s so weird that people get so hung up and invested in an urban legend that they’re challenging your first video. Like, they really WANT moth man to be real so much that they can’t accept facts. 🤦🏼♀️ This is why we can’t have nice things, people. There aren’t moth men. Or ghosts. Stop getting got so easily. I understand WANTING to believe. But I don’t understand TRYING to believe to the point of ignoring facts.
I wholeheartedly believe the two people who first reported mothman believed what they saw was “supernatural”. But it wasn’t, and there is no evidence whatsoever that mothman existed or exists. It would be so awesome if it did. But it doesn’t. Get over it and accept it.
"and human-centric idea... Look. I just made up a word for this video." I can't help but chuckle at *that* being what you made up. It's just amusing that, of all words you could choose, its proper/existing counterpart is one I know from a TH-cam video where Carl Sagan uses it. ("the tidy, anthropocentric proscenium of our ancestors", excerpted in "A Universe Not Made For Us" from Callum Sutherland's Carl Sagan Tribute Series and originally from the audiobook of Pale Blue Dot if I remember correctly.) "true aliens wouldn't look exactly like us" I can't remember where (might have been Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Darkness"), but I read an interesting hypothesis that the "Roswell Grey" look is derived from a sleep-fogged human brain's conception of what makes up a face, with the nature of the distortions from human norm being significant too.
Thanks for the videos Trey. You have cured me of the voices in my head which have been causing unbearable suffering for so long. I will now worship you for the rest of life.
Bigfoot seems to be a popular choice, I can already see some problems with what I'm about to say, but what the hey ima say it anyway, I would like it if you mentioned the yeti and other ape cryptids, there are actually a surprising amount of ape like creatures in most if not all cultures, but Bigfoot gets most (if not all) of the fame, so yeah in short I would like you to mention the less popular cryptids if it's okay with you.
Since I am an account with a dinosaur as a logo, I've decided to trademark the Dinosaur genre. If you wish to make any videos related to dinosaurs, you'll have to ask me for licensing.
I JUST found out about the giant owl of cuba - though it seemed like it was *mostly* flightless, like American turkeys. That is, they're able to fly for shorter distances, but generally prefer not to. Also, about 1.1 meters tall :) TREY the Explainer, you are one of my favorite youtubers. Keep up the amazing work.
Off topic and older video, but anyone else remember The Secret Saturdays? It was a show on Cartoon Network in the late 2000s/early 2010s about a family of cryptid hunting scientists.
Hi Trey. I really enjoy your videos, and I wanted to add something to your comments about photography in the 60s. You mention that most people didn't have cameras, and that color photography wasn't available yet to the mainstream at this time. Actually, cameras were very popular in the 60s, from the expensive to the cheap, and it wouldn't have been unusual for someone to have one loaded and ready at a moment's notice. You show an expensive Polaroid from the time, but most cameras were not expensive or instant, and you would have sent your film to a lab after shooting it. There were even versions of the old Brownie box cameras still in use in the 60s. Color film was also readily available, although it would have cost more than b&w. The trickiest thing was flash photography, which you would have needed for anything not in broad daylight. You needed a flash bulb for every exposure, and those were expensive, so they were used sparingly. Electronic flash was not available for the common person. To me, the widespread availability of cameras in the 60s makes it even more likely that there would be photos of Mothman, if it existed.
Existing or not, it's awesome how much of an impact it had and still has on Point Pleasant. Honestly i'd like to visit the town during the festival, it just sounds cool
It almost sounds as if mothman could simply be bird with an exaggerated description. Sometimes when people see something out of the corner of their eye or for a split second, their imagination and superstitions end up taking over to a point where they can swear that the object/animal/thing was 10x the size it actually was. Seeing things far away can also warp your estimation to something completely off. Maybe it started with someone seeing an animal out of the corner of their eye, seeing a scary movie, etc... and the superstition just drove people to see things from a warped view in a sense? That is how the Loch Ness monster started after all.
What if moth man just had really long dainty secretary bird legs but they were covered in feathers making them look stout while actually being very small
Clearly mothman is a interdimensional taco seller from a world where Bigfoot & yetis have civilization & the "wings" are 2 giant tacos they are holding and when one is eaten it gives you magical flight powers
6:48 Yeah, here you said that the giant cuban owl was 2 meters tall which is just wrong, it was actually 1.1 meters tall or 3 feet and 7 inches tall, also it's pretty dumb to say that 2 meters is "hardly as tall as mothman" when two meters is less than half a foot shorter than 7 feet tall which is how tall mothman is stated to be. Don't mean to be rude or anything, you might've just tripped up on your words
I grew up and live less than a mile from the Ironton-Russell bridge. I live in Flatwoods, Kentucky. The bridge was not demolished in 2003, but in 2017, not even a year ago. They have built a new bridge in its place. The old bridge was a common, yearly nesting site for Peregrine falcons, and during the breeding season they always took turns resting on top like that while the other parent came back with food. The picture may be a falcon flying off, but at any rate this bridge was up and fully running until fall of 2016, then torn down in 2017.
Actually, I got an idea... So maybe mothman was a robot built to scare people out of the TNT area. For all we know, the mothman is a drone with bicycle reflectors taped to it sitting in someones closet. Or a spirit, I like the spirit idea.
Thanks for making a hypothesis as to what mothman would be like if it was a scientifically accurate creature. Say what you will about cryptids and mythical beasts, they're a very fascinating topic to me. I NEED that Cryptid book!!
7:45 - Yes, EXACTLY. I'm certainly in favor of having an open mind, but at some point "open mindedness" becomes stupidity. One of the things that is a real pet peeve of mine (as an electrical engineer) is people who get on TH-cam and try to claim they've built a spinning machine out of permanent magnets that will produce energy endlessly. When I call them out, other viewers sail in and accuse me of "closed mindedness," "being in the pockets of the oil companies," and so on. OF COURSE there is still new physics yet to be discovered. But we're talking about ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY here. It's been studied to death. Finding some loophole in Maxwell's Equations that would let us pull energy out of nothing would be like finding a diamond mine in Times Square. So - yes - you are 100% right on this point.
awesome! i like the part about the aliens. i think anyone who's read enough about evolution would agree that humanoid aliens are practically impossible
Hey Trey, got some things to say since I don't really chat that often. First off all amazing video as always, you never seise to amaze me. Second, I actually heard about mothman sightings outside of Point Pleasant later on (Mothman has supposedly been spotted flying and roosting on the skyscrapers of Los Angles and New York City), just want to see if you can find the origin of this and what you think of it. Third, how about some unexpected cryptid that I just remembered. There's supposed pterosaur sightings in New Zealand that actually supposedly have biomluminescants. I'm really curious to see what you think.
+Scanova the Carnotaurus Thank you! Don't believe Mothman was actually sighted in LA or New York City (really why would an animal go to such a populated city and why would we have so few evidence if it was really there), I just believe those are copyrcat fake accounts. You are thinking of the Ropen and it was not spotted in New Zealand but Papua New Guinea
TREY the Explainer its somewhere in Australasia, I just assumed it was in New Zealand, buts it's one of the lesser known cryptids, after flatwoods monster maybe?
I enjoyed this video, and the next cryptid you should cover is the leviathan, or any other giant sea monsters. I think this could be a interesting subject and could have some rather interesting results.
You might find the MonsterTalk episodes on Mothman, there's an interesting and similar take on it. The Flatwoods Monster is another similar story and description to Mothman and didn't happen that far away from Point Pleasant either...
a thing I noticed is at 3:39 the image only has one pair while he other is missing and this picture only certifies your claim and the closer part of the picture could be a little bit of home-style doctoring

In the 2nd picture it doesn’t look like the last thread holding it broke and it fell straight down. Looks more like if someone were to rip it off and chuck it. I was shocked you didn’t notice that but loved the videos!
Homunculus97 Lockness is connected to the ocean but ya i do agree
Xekzelstriker The thing with Loch Ness is that it also cant sustain a population of larger predators due to its lacking ecosystem. It simply doesn't have enough large fish to feed the plesisoaurids.
Homunculus97 ya the fish aren't big enough to sustain a plesisoauids if it stays their.
+Xekzelstriker I think large eels/hagfish were the last theory I heard, but I dunno if they're in the area.
Found your channel, loving your content so far-paleo and cryptid! Hope to see more of these scientific looks at mysteries and creatures.
*When did west Virginia become the Congo*
I found mothman's real identity: he's secretly a decomposing basking shark!
A channel veteran. Very nice.
lol he was in the avatar and in legend of Kora.
+ImFAULKn I know I corrected myself
@@TREYtheExplainer he also wasn't the face stealer
Will you do a video on genetic mutation and how it actually works? I find the subject to be very intresting.
anurognathids are very cute.
+Lets Paint Very true!
I'm really happy you chose to use happy music. Helps alot when I'm watching these kind of videos at 3AM.
Dude, that was a really cool evolutionary tree. Thanks. :D
By the way, my name is technically The B a s i k Show (as in, the opposite of acidic, but with a k) but The Basilisk Show (which is a lizard I think) sounds cooler, anyways.
I loved your comments on how alien lifeforms would NOT look like anything here on earth. Finally someone who also thinks this same thing! This is why I love your videos trey.
didnt expect an upload at 1 am but im not complaining
+fhrdgr same
Who would
I picture mothman as a very large species of owl, with long, narrow legs, a wingspan of about 25 feet, highly reflective eyes that shine red, and it has a small beak that is usually covered by the feathers of its flat face. It does in fact have a neck and head, and it can rotate about 160 degrees around, and it has a light grey ruff around its neck, white feathers with black wingtips, chest, and undersides of its wings (as it will help for sneaking up on its prey, due to it hunting from the air), and its wings are speckled with brown spots of feathers on top. it is primarily a scavenger but also eats plenty of live prey, such as deer and sometimes it will fly over lakes or rivers and pluck fish out of the water with its long legs, its legs are hollow to reduce weight and it has claws on its wings for gripping ledges, trees, or prey, it cuts open carcasses with its sharp talons, and is known to perch up high to nest and search for prey.
scientific name: Brevicollis Corax
common name (s): Mothman, Bridgestalker, White reaper, Northern marabou, Kings condor, Snow Bat, Castle Owl
Inspirations: Snowy owl, Barn owl, Marabou Stork
Every time I see a video from this channel pop up in my Sub Box, I get so excited... Is it okay that I get that excited by a TH-cam channel?
Yes yes it is i feel u... When your a gamer you get excited by alot of channels xD
I feel that way when a new bad lipreading comes out
And this channel
+The Mighty Mighty yes
That means this is an amazing channel that deserves 40 mil.
Yo I'm a little late but the word you're looking for is "Anthropocentric" when you said human centric. I'm almost finished watching every single video on your channel. great stuff my dude
Nice vid man could u do the Puerto Rican chupacabra next?
aka Chupi xD
EL CHRIS I smile at your pfp
Ah, so those creepy eyes were you! You managed to creep me out with them in Part 1! Well done! (Though I'm really not that hard to scare so it's probably not a massive victory...ah well!)
Man I wish there were vids like these in my browsing history when I was a kid. I used to scare myself silly by watching videos of ghosts and cryptids and stuff and ended up with a pretty big fear of aliens despite not even believing in them.
It's a really great video and I look forward to seeing more. :D
+ElegantExcalibur Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyred it
Love the vids man!
High regards
Nick Groshart
+Nicholas Groshart Thank you Nicl! I really appreciate your response :)
+TREY the Explainer same ear
Mothman was like the tooth fairy to me.
I love your vids. I'm starting to get into paleontology now. Thanks!
Good job debunking all these myths and conspiracies Trey. So glad you I found your channel and subscribed.
Do Mokole Mbembe. It is plausible but probably not.
well nw he did it
Hamza 760 thanks to trey I don’t believe in the mokole mbembe LOL
"and human-centric idea... Look. I just made up a word for this video."
I can't help but chuckle at *that* being what you made up. It's just amusing that, of all words you could choose, its proper/existing counterpart is one I know from a TH-cam video where Carl Sagan uses it. ("the tidy, anthropocentric proscenium of our ancestors", excerpted in "A Universe Not Made For Us" from Callum Sutherland's Carl Sagan Tribute Series and originally from the audiobook of Pale Blue Dot if I remember correctly.)
"true aliens wouldn't look exactly like us"
I can't remember where (might have been Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Darkness"), but I read an interesting hypothesis that the "Roswell Grey" look is derived from a sleep-fogged human brain's conception of what makes up a face, with the nature of the distortions from human norm being significant too.
5:50 convergent evolution?
I really appreciate the way you approach the question and break down your methodology!
Thanks for the videos Trey. You have cured me of the voices in my head which have been causing unbearable suffering for so long. I will now worship you for the rest of life.
I am glad you continued this series. I like all the perspectives you run through. Keep it up! 💚
You should do the Dover Demon
Mothman flew out of a tunnel into the hollow earth and went back when he had to deal with living in West Virginia, poor guy
Oh also yeah I know yeti is a bad example of an unpopular cryptid but I think you know what I'm saying.
And do da bunyip! :D
+Ethan Hendren that's not a bad idea
wouldn't Bigfoot be like a gigantopithicus
+Merrick roe no Bigfoot is more hominid than gigantopithicus the orangutan
Can I possibly use that moth man costume picture of yours for an album of mine?
Since I am an account with a dinosaur as a logo, I've decided to trademark the Dinosaur genre. If you wish to make any videos related to dinosaurs, you'll have to ask me for licensing.
Is it okay with you if I make a video on why Dinosaurs look cool featherless?
+Oscar Arias Lol no. Reported, Copyright strike, -100,000 subs.
Aye you'd make a Fine brother of mine.
+Paleomotions I've trademarked "account" delete your channel or you will be contacted by my lawyers.
+Sacred Band rofl
I JUST found out about the giant owl of cuba - though it seemed like it was *mostly* flightless, like American turkeys. That is, they're able to fly for shorter distances, but generally prefer not to. Also, about 1.1 meters tall :)
TREY the Explainer, you are one of my favorite youtubers. Keep up the amazing work.
Could you do
Bigfoot/Skunk ape
Chupacobra
Vampires
Warewolves (lol)
Also… maybe a bunyip?
The picture at 6:14 reminds me of the alien special of Darwin 4 called Alien Planet, Trey would you do a video talking about That show/special?
6:50 that's a tall soldier
That soldier is clearly a decomposed basking shark
Off topic and older video, but anyone else remember The Secret Saturdays? It was a show on Cartoon Network in the late 2000s/early 2010s about a family of cryptid hunting scientists.
11:58 what the hell does that mean?
Holy Shit! I got noticed! Also Wan Shi Tong was in ATLA in the library under the sands.
+Hylian Montage XD and I fixed that, stupid me
You should do a thing like this at the beginning or end of a paleo profile to quickly go over the last one. Keep up the great work!
"Megalo" -Megalovania intensifies-
Trey - you really did this one well, man - both of these were a lot of fun. :-)
Yes I’m not real stop looking.
3:41 - Those are maybe microwave repeaters? I REALLY like your slam down of that "photographic evidence." :-)
If mothman is real what is there to fear? What is going to do? Kick you? Lol its false. Mothman is not real.
Read about this the other day but did by any chance here about the gigantic oviraptorasaur found in Hell Creek?
Do Donald Trump next. Trey, make it happen.
I am so thrilled every time I see an owl; I don't understand why people find it disappointing to find out Mothman or Flatwoods Monster were dinosaurs.
Amazing video keep this format, I can't believe these videos get so much feedback
+Carson Neiss thank you
What if moth man just had really long dainty secretary bird legs but they were covered in feathers making them look stout while actually being very small
The picture may be a falcon flying off, but at any rate this bridge was up and fully running until fall of 2016, then torn down in 2017.
your researchs are damn good.
Love your work man.
I love these cryptid videos please do one on incorruptible politicians
Michigan Dogman/Beast of Bray Road? I think a more obscure one would be good.
Nicely done.
Cool clip art from Expedition. BTW
TBS
Actually, I got an idea... So maybe mothman was a robot built to scare people out of the TNT area. For all we know, the mothman is a drone with bicycle reflectors taped to it sitting in someones closet. Or a spirit, I like the spirit idea.
Thanks for making a hypothesis as to what mothman would be like if it was a scientifically accurate creature. Say what you will about cryptids and mythical beasts, they're a very fascinating topic to me. I NEED that Cryptid book!!
Very glad to see a response to all the haters on youtube trying to tell you that you were wrong, it was hilarious. Good job! :D
+Daciii K. Grimm (Nikky) Thank you :)
So - yes - you are 100% right on this point.
man, is hilarious how you respond the coments, kip it up!!
awesome! i like the part about the aliens. i think anyone who's read enough about evolution would agree that humanoid aliens are practically impossible
+jonny pepperston Thank you! and finally someone agrees!
+TREY the Explainer at least thats what the aliens told me. XD
+Fabulous Tyranosaur Thank you and that's the plan ;)
You might find the MonsterTalk episodes on Mothman, there's an interesting and similar take on it.
The Flatwoods Monster is another similar story and description to Mothman and didn't happen that far away from Point Pleasant either...
a thing I noticed is at 3:39 the image only has one pair while he other is missing and this picture only certifies your claim and the closer part of the picture could be a little bit of home-style doctoring
