What if game design and game dev are actually two differnt things. Game developer is closer to a person who works in implementation the code and systems, where designers are pre-implementation and deal with design choices.
What is it called when there is a person who comes up with the ideas for the game such as what the campaign is gonna be or what the missions are without actually coding or physically making the game?
It's video like these that keep me motivated! The book that I've found quite pragmatic when it comes to video game design is "The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design" by Flint Dille. Even though it's from 2007, it still provides a great insight into what video game design and writing is and what are the roles that one has to fulfill as a designer. It also teaches how to create a game design document.
i think its also important to clarify what a game designer isn't; an "ideas guy". its not a role where you get to have 'awesome ideas', then have the artists or engineers do all the work for you; its a role where you have to put in a lot of work to flesh out the nitty-gritty technical details of your systems or designs, and work/communicate WITH the other parts of the team effectively to make one cohesive vision of the game. not saying that necessarily to put people off; but game design in particular draws a particular kind of person/mindset that thinks the role will let them tell other people their vague ideas and sit back while said people do all the work "implementing their genius"... the term "ideas guy" has a negative connotation in creative industries for a reason.

This is really good stuff! It's probably why I haven't landed a role in the industry. I'm an indie game developer, and my special skills include game design and programming. Don't get me wrong I've been told to be pretty good as a developer. I hope you guys one day make a video that tells exactly how to get into a game design role(preferably in an entry level).
I want to become a level designer, what programmes should I use to create maps? I know I can use unity but I don't know code so I wouldn't be able to play test the map
I have strong doubts that QA is any longer a viable point of entry if your end goal is game design. It's kind of become its own profession in the industry, requires more up front, and doesn't necessarily lead anywhere else.
Thanks for the suggestion! We’ve been asked about animation videos before so it’s on our future script list. Are you looking for tutorials? Or overview of the best sources for animation?

I can't confirm, but this sounds like good info. However, the video quality itself is not quite there. The mic feels weird, like my headphones are leaking. I'm no audiophile, so I can't pinpoint what it is or how to describe it, but there's something weird about it. The animation is slow and the timing doesn't line up right with the speech. The music is servicable, but something more atmospheric would be great. But overall, worthwhile video. Thanks!
@@dhanushg3357 well if you want a degree in game design I'd recommend a place like DigiPen, but to be a successful game designer you don't need a career in it. Like any creative field, how easy you get a job depends on your portfolio more so than your degree.
@@niespeludo yep, I learned that a portfolio matters much more than a degree. I learned this by seeing how other game designers in popular video game studios who don't have a college education, but were accepted thanks to their skill on game design, but also creating a good portfolio.
What if you are working for an Indie company? I heard they mostly need people with generalist skills which I mostly have compare to specialist skills for AAA companies. Also, where would be the best place or site to look for Games Designer role as a job or placement year?
My dream is to be a game designer since im not very good at coding but i really like making games and working on how to make the game play mrchanics better specially with Trading Card Games i have ideas for a game but dont havr the coding skills to execute it nor the skills in art
It's more common than programmers becoming the game designers as they're more creative. Game design is an art that combined both the logical math part with creative parts.
I would mostly just like to work on character design for the games that I want to make in the future! That's all I have drawn OCs on my sketchbook and I plan on drawing more in the future so really that's all I wanted to say. Also I really like Super Smash Bros all of them, Super Smash Bros 64, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch I never played the WiiU actually I have played Super Smash Bros on the WiiU but it didn't work very well it was like scratched or something so my older brother returned the game and the console to the store so we don't have a WiiU but also my friend Juan Carlos he had it for the WiiU and a few years ago I think it was 2020 on Christmas I went to his house with a bunch of other friends and we played it and it was fun but the most funnest one is Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo switch! Other games I like are Metal Slug there are so many of them and the Fifa soccer games 🙂🎮👍🕹️❤️😎🏆
A QA Tester position will only get you into a game designer role if it's an indie studio. If you get into QA for a large, AAA studio, you'll never move anywhere outside of QA.
Ask Gamedev can you suggest which language to begin with if you have 0 knowledge in programming cuz in my surroundings people think that computer are waste of time and if you don't get good grades in high school u are a loser!!! It sucks 😑😫
The two most popular languages for game development are C++ and C#. C# is a common choice for beginners as its an easier learning curve.. but C++ probably has wider application. Do you have a particular project that you want to build? If there is a particular game engine that you know you want to work in, that might help inform your decision.
You should get more subscribers! Also do you have to be a good storyteller and draw Concept art because I have so many drawings. Write alot of stories that pop into my head, and currently I have 3 Game ideas, but I want to do Animated Series as well so I was wondering what should I start off with first?
Sounds too hard for me I’m pretty dumb there’s no way I could do code I just like making stories and ideas for games so I thought game design would be great but now I know I stand no chance
ok first and foremost your explanation was helpful but the visuals and audio could definitely use some changes the background music is distracting and the animations don't match the points covered, i had to physically look away to understand what you were saying because your animation was saying the same thing at .5 speed it would be like talking with someone except you hear them perfectly fine but their mouth is all over the place or if you are reviewing a math problem in a school except the teacher is asking what you should do on step five but his hand hasn't even found step 2 yet, other than that this video was helpful, if i have one piece of advice you didn't cover in fact tried the opposite is on ideas, if you have an idea for a game, or a product, don't share it with someone who can take it from you, keep it too yourself and turn your own ideas into reality, only share your ideas with those who will take it if it is your intent for them to take it and bring it to life, if you have a game changing idea, it stays with you, it is your responsibility to make that idea yours and not somebody else's, for instance my mom though of a fire extinguishing grenade that is harmless and small but when it hits the flame it put's it out, later she saw commercials of this product being sold, the thing is if she had coined this idea first she could have made all the money that they are making, but yet she was too late, her idea was to the extent a good idea but it was too bad that it was an idea that had already been thought by someone else with more ambition, someone else who decided that it would be their reality, and not someone of whom stole it from you, if you really want to be known for your idea, put in the time money and work into making it your idea, your reality, and not someone else's piggy back of a product, in the future you could be known as an innovator, the one who came up with so much, or you could be known as a nobody, while those with perked ears got rich and richer while you died sad and lonely, one thing that i have learned in my time of being alive is that if you are reading this you're probably young, if your young you should know this, there is such a big world out there, you have 80 years or so to make sure you lived your life to the fullest, you need to understand what, for you, that best life is, and what it means you will live without and what comes with that life. and once your done planning out your entire life, you calculative overthinking beautiful son of a bitch, try to enjoy the pieces falling together, watching the shit you predicted come to reality and just think to yourself that despite the honest fact that your'e just following the steps, to your perfect future, there is still time to breath the air of this exact moment and rejoice into the world that is mystifyingly mysterious and random, but breathtaking to say the least.
4:18 ...Really? Had to throw a dab in there...?XD But seriously, good video. What do you think matters more in the gaming industry: experience or education?
A game dev said this..i am paraphrasing a bit....''nobody gives a crap how you know the things you know, did you study or you are self taught...as long as you can deliver what it is needed "...skills and experience matter the most It was a video here on youtube...i cant remember which one though
I’ve tried to listen to this twice now but the music is too distracting and the speed at which the guy is talking is too fast. It sounds like it has been sped up or he’s on something. Why is this “a thing” on TH-cam?
One day I’m gonna make a police game for Xbox and PlayStation because the police games we have on console SUCK!! so I wanna make a police game I’d go into the details but it would be very long if you want the details just reply to my comment and then I’d tell you what the game would be like and about
your audio quality and the way you edited the music so loud in the background of this video killed me so you get an unlike for it,,, information are great. keep on and work on these stuff
There are definitely designers that look after narrative and scripts. Good point. In story-based games that is a critical role! Do you work in game design?
nope, but i would love to someday...but i feel like people dont really want a narrative designer in their team, so it might make getting a job harder..

Don’t pass on any opportunities and see where you get!
this was a helpful video thank you! :)
To become an game designer, what course I have to study? 🤔 And I'm from India....pls anyone tell me
The art of Game Design, a Book of Lenses by Jesse Schell.
@@niespeludo pls clarify my doubt? This game designer career doesn't need any course or certificate ?🤔🤔
@@dhanushg3357 well if you want a degree in game design I'd recommend a place like DigiPen, but to be a successful game designer you don't need a career in it. Like any creative field, how easy you get a job depends on your portfolio more so than your degree.
@@niespeludo thank you man🤗🤗
@@niespeludo yep, I learned that a portfolio matters much more than a degree. I learned this by seeing how other game designers in popular video game studios who don't have a college education, but were accepted thanks to their skill on game design, but also creating a good portfolio.
my teacher is giving us videos about how to become game creators or producers and other stuff
*let me outttt*
Wolfenstein Castle 1 was really creative at the time it came out!
What if you are working for an Indie company? I heard they mostly need people with generalist skills which I mostly have compare to specialist skills for AAA companies.
Also, where would be the best place or site to look for Games Designer role as a job or placement year?
What did you majlr in?
does anybody know wht i should major in college to become a gaming designer?
Thanks this helped a lot
This video was very useful thank you.
Awesome! Thanks for the kind words!
Are their any other design topics you would like us to cover?
The song in the background is so annoying
My dream is to be a game designer since im not very good at coding but i really like making games and working on how to make the game play mrchanics better specially with Trading Card Games i have ideas for a game but dont havr the coding skills to execute it nor the skills in art
Thank you so much
Is it ok that a Game Designer came from the backgrounds of Game Art/Animation/VFX?
Yes
if I recall correctly the guy who directed dead space came from an art background.
It's more common than programmers becoming the game designers as they're more creative. Game design is an art that combined both the logical math part with creative parts.
i really want to get into this i want to learn C++ and program
Bro PLZ ....share me in which software game is design 😍😘😍 I am waiting for your cmnt
Unreal Engine and Unity
really superb.. and good.. i want more publishing video games video from you..
Great video! I really love your explanations!
That breaking bad reference @0:22
What if it is 2020
I would mostly just like to work on character design for the games that I want to make in the future!
Great video
Can I become a video game designer with an information technology degree? Please help me guys😥
I’m looking for a team to start a dream project
you forgot narrative/character/world designers
A QA Tester position will only get you into a game designer role if it's an indie studio. If you get into QA for a large, AAA studio, you'll never move anywhere outside of QA.
Great channel guys 💜🙃🙃
Thanks Jugal! Appreciate the support
Ask Gamedev I wanna start a small primitive project with unity for my learning
Will C# be okay??
Jugal Gadhavi I think C# in Unity would be a great choice.
You should get more subscribers! Also do you have to be a good storyteller and draw Concept art because I have so many drawings. Write alot of stories that pop into my head, and currently I have 3 Game ideas, but I want to do Animated Series as well so I was wondering what should I start off with first?
Become a solo indie game developer and you will do anything presented in this video.
So your telling me that if you wanna make you own game you need other people wtffffff
Then I think of how great Black Mesa Half-life 1 remake. And how its taken them over 10 years to finish it..................
Sounds too hard for me I’m pretty dumb there’s no way I could do code I just like making stories and ideas for games so I thought game design would be great but now I know I stand no chance
How to become a game designer?
Design a game, done.
I think of Todd Howard
ok first and foremost your explanation was helpful but the visuals and audio could definitely use some changes the background music is distracting and the animations don't match the points covered, i had to physically look away to understand what you were saying because your animation was saying the same thing at .5 speed it would be like talking with someone except you hear them perfectly fine but their mouth is all over the place or if you are reviewing a math problem in a school except the teacher is asking what you should do on step five but his hand hasn't even found step 2 yet, other than that this video was helpful, if i have one piece of advice you didn't cover in fact tried the opposite is on ideas, if you have an idea for a game, or a product, don't share it with someone who can take it from you, keep it too yourself and turn your own ideas into reality, only share your ideas with those who will take it if it is your intent for them to take it and bring it to life, if you have a game changing idea, it stays with you, it is your responsibility to make that idea yours and not somebody else's, for instance my mom though of a fire extinguishing grenade that is harmless and small but when it hits the flame it put's it out, later she saw commercials of this product being sold, the thing is if she had coined this idea first she could have made all the money that they are making, but yet she was too late, her idea was to the extent a good idea but it was too bad that it was an idea that had already been thought by someone else with more ambition, someone else who decided that it would be their reality, and not someone of whom stole it from you, if you really want to be known for your idea, put in the time money and work into making it your idea, your reality, and not someone else's piggy back of a product, in the future you could be known as an innovator, the one who came up with so much, or you could be known as a nobody, while those with perked ears got rich and richer while you died sad and lonely, one thing that i have learned in my time of being alive is that if you are reading this you're probably young, if your young you should know this, there is such a big world out there, you have 80 years or so to make sure you lived your life to the fullest, you need to understand what, for you, that best life is, and what it means you will live without and what comes with that life. and once your done planning out your entire life, you calculative overthinking beautiful son of a bitch, try to enjoy the pieces falling together, watching the shit you predicted come to reality and just think to yourself that despite the honest fact that your'e just following the steps, to your perfect future, there is still time to breath the air of this exact moment and rejoice into the world that is mystifyingly mysterious and random, but breathtaking to say the least.
Subnautica has awesome design
4:18 ...Really? Had to throw a dab in there...?XD But seriously, good video. What do you think matters more in the gaming industry: experience or education?
TheRoyTeal96 couldn’t resist the dab!
Experience over education every time. No contest.
And thanks for watching! Appreciate the support
Ask Gamedev That's pretty cool, many creators can't be bothered to read or comment let alone answer such a great question.
A game dev said this..i am paraphrasing a bit....''nobody gives a crap how you know the things you know, did you study or you are self taught...as long as you can deliver what it is needed "...skills and experience matter the most
It was a video here on youtube...i cant remember which one though
in the popular game designer thing... Notch.. WHY DID HE NOT THINK ABOUT NOTCH!?
I have an awesome full length video game idea n design n story and i wish i could be hooked up with someone who could help me get it into real life.
Jeez this music is so loud I can barely understand what he is saying
The music is very annoying. Still the video great.
I’ve tried to listen to this twice now but the music is too distracting and the speed at which the guy is talking is too fast. It sounds like it has been sped up or he’s on something. Why is this “a thing” on TH-cam?
Nice☺☺
The annoying looping music is always the worst part of ask gamedev videos
And who designing characters?
The music is loooooud
I thought Portal had really innovative design
Valve have made a lot of great games. Curious if people think Portal is their best
The background music is not loud enough! 👎🏽
A lil more and we can have a party!
tnx for the video, but, for Gabe's sake, the tune is soooo annoying 😥
Hell yes suda 51
Aren't all these designers from Japan bruh
Nah
Where's the tutorial on how to become a pawn star...
🔥
Gabe angry
Wtf is Ask Gamedev Jake Paul fans?
One day I’m gonna make a police game for Xbox and PlayStation because the police games we have on console SUCK!! so I wanna make a police game I’d go into the details but it would be very long if you want the details just reply to my comment and then I’d tell you what the game would be like and about
😨😨😱😰
If u want to be a game designer go to school
your audio quality and the way you edited the music so loud in the background of this video killed me so you get an unlike for it,,, information are great. keep on and work on these stuff
Narrative Designer doesnt exist????
There are definitely designers that look after narrative and scripts. Good point. In story-based games that is a critical role!
Do you work in game design?
nope, but i would love to someday...but i feel like people dont really want a narrative designer in their team, so it might make getting a job harder..
There is definitely work in script writing .. but it’s hard to break into that role for sure. It would definitely help to know people in the industry.
If you want to be a game designer go to school
You dont need school for it tho. Start small bc yourself at home on a day off of work and just learn. Companies mostly want experience not a degree.
Pubg
I wanted to be a video game designer before but there was a lot of math and code. Maybe I can try it again.
