    We have been interviewing entry-level programmers for the last two weeks and every single point on this list is spot on. If you implement these points at even the most basic level you will move to the top of the list.

      @AskGamedev  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Frank! Do you have any other tips for our viewers on how to break into the industry?

    • @frankprogrammer
      @frankprogrammer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Start building a portfolio of small weekend game-jam level games and write down a technical explanation of what you did. Put this up on TH-cam at least or make a simple website. For a bonus, include source code samples. Most students that apply only show off big group projects they worked on in school with 10 people and it is difficult to gauge what they really did. Schoolwork tech demos don't count.
      If you post to Twitter about games/gamedev, let us know. It is cool to find passionate people.
      Don't lie. We will find out fast. It is ok to apply for a job even if you don't meet all the requirements, but make it clear that you don't.
      Don't say "I'll do anything". Apply for one position at a time and include the title in your email/cover letter. Sometimes we have to hunt around and guess what position a person is applying for.

    Thanks! This is handy! I am an IT student planning to slowly shift from gamedev, I have a lot of hiatus projects(very bad) but I have reasons to justify it and I really want to breakthrough. Guess I need to make something quick and show to the company I'll be interning (game tester intern). Wish me luck!

    Number 1 is really important because sometimes we can get too busy with our personal projects, learning a new skill, building on our portfolio, or just spending a lot of time applying for jobs that we don't have time to play games. Every single time I was interviewed for a gaming job, I was ALWAYS asked "what games have you been playing recently" and sometimes it was hard for me to answer that because sometimes I get so busy with work that I can't find time for games.

    Hey Ask Gamedev, I'm a student in Game Technology, and i'm passionate in Game Design. However, there's a certain stigma here that the best way to be in the game industry is becoming an Artist or Programmer. I researched around and am pretty sure this is not true.
    However, as a Game designer i'm still not sure on future career paths.
    Should i just keep making games and fingers crossed hope a studio picks me up, or go full entrepreneur and make my own studio?
    Is it even possible for some random dude in a random polytechnic in a third world country to gain an internship abroad in a big studio?

    Im writting my resume, not long after I graduated from college, but I have portfolios, 3 solo projects and one group project. Do I need to write "what have I done in this game" specifily in my resume?
    Because there are 3D model , animations, and music from the unreal marketplace.
    I just did all the design, and game logic. Do I need to list them all? like this: UI desgin and programming. Enemy AI desgin and programming, combat system desgin and programming............looks dumb,.,,,,,
    but If I directly say develop by myself, but some assets are come from the unreal marketplace, how does the recuriter know what I have done?
