Hi Jenn, just wanted to say you have one of the best contents in the platform! Not only the content itself, but how you deliver it! I’ve been devouring all your videos since I’ve started following you, and I cannot recommend your channel enough. It’s been helping a lot understanding my own features and why I don’t like certain clothes/colors on me. Everything makes sense. Keep up the good work and happy holidays 🤍
I'm super grateful for this video. It is the perfect example of the difference between professionals and amateurs. You never talk in absolute terms like "must have" or "staples". Even as well-intentioned advice, this rules show lack of knowledge. Not every garment is for everybody and saying: that thing is an staple can be even harmful when people buy and dress them and feel uncomfortable, washed out or, well, uglier. so when you go above all the noise in social media and say: stop, look at yourself and think about your features before following the rules, you are empowering women (and men) that are not canonically beautiful. And that is a marvelous proof of your professionalism and of the power of your profession to make people feel better about themselves. Also, I love that you pick examples of truly beautiful women that don't fit the rules. Personally, I don't own a black turtleneck and you have persuaded me I don't need one. I don't look anything like you, but we share many characteristics such as broad shoulders, a prominent lower face, and high contrast in our coloring. So a lot of what favors you also favors me and it helps me a lot to understand why. Bye the wat, I find the boat necks are really flattering on me and my only black sweater has one. Do you wear them?
Thank you so much for this comment ❤️ It’s so encouraging to me to hear these words. 🙏🙏🙏 I don’t particularly hate boatnecks but I feel I just never reach for them when shopping. I don’t have a short neck but I self-consciously think that the horizontal neckline accentuates my shoulders more? I do like off-shoulder sweaters and tops though!
Very well said. Definitely don't agree with everyone suiting a "must have staple". My biggest items I feel like this about are turtle necks, high waisted jeans and camel coats/trenches. Too many variables in individuals to make an item universally flattering. I can't wear turtle necks due to a slight double chin, short neck. Highlights something I am conscious and makes it look worse than it really is. Also, if you have a large chest it can not be the most flattering. Plus a lot of people don't suit black near their face, even if wearing make up.
Thank you for this! I tried so hard to make black turtlenecks work for me, but my current opinion is that they work best with more dramatic face types, whereas all my facial features are round. Now I’m seeking out more open and especially wider necklines, so would definitely be interested in videos on boatneck and off-the-shoulder styles.
I absolutely love turtlenecks on me and find it it one of my favourite necklines. I have strong gamine essence, narrow shoulders, and a small bustline. I feel like a lot of people who fit this description look good in a turtleneck.
I have always hated turtlenecks, and unless icy weather requires one, it's a no for me - lol - even then, I'd opt for a wool scarf first! I'm at an age now where a turtleneck would camo a crepe-y neck, but I'm still Team Open Neckline. Reason being that I've always been tall rectangular and flat-chested, and I think a v- or lower neckline is feminizing. Appreciate your content, and wish you a peaceful and happy holiday season!
A "Closet Staple" should be something that works for you personally in such a flattering way that it is a constant. For some it may be a black turtle neck, for others a simple dark V neck, again it could be a cream cable.
I'm a soft classic and I absolutely love turtlenecks. My neck is rather lean and long and they suit me very well. I also own a black one, however I must say that due to my very low contrast (light blond hair and eyebrows), it looks very separated from my face and just too harsh. So I agree that a black turtleneck is definitely not a wardrobe staple for everyone!
Great explanation once again. I often like turtlenecks and mocknecks although on paper I'm not the ideal candidate for them, but what the heck I enjoy the look and feel classy when I wear them :D I think the mockneck looked great on you as well. I have to say this though: I was surprised when you said you're insecure about your shoulders, as I think you should be proud of them! I have broad shoulders too and I've always liked them, thanks to my my mom who often complimented me on them and how stately they look. I tend to agree, it's not a bad feature at all to have. I think width in the upper body creates a beautiful décolleté, which is a very attractive and feminine feature to highlight with clothing.
I’ve learned to like my shoulders because of the way certain clothes hang on the body ❤️ but yes they have been a big insecurity for me growing up! Thanks you for the kind words. Happy New Year! 🎉🥳
At last someone said it! Thank you :) As someone with fairly short neck and roundish face I always hated turtleneck on me. I hate anything that cuts me off under my face.
Appreciate this! Wide neck, so I avoided turtle necks, but weak chin. Gave me options I didn't know I had. I just love your styling tips, and how you can be open about your own little ahh moments. Thanks so much!
This is why I love your channel ❤ You really help to train your subscribers eyes, instead of just giving generalized re-hashed information that doesn't apply to everyone. Thank you!
Thanks for the helpful video! IMHO, your shoulders look normal and you looked fine in that turtleneck. I think your uncle was being unnecessarily harsh. Happy New Year!
I have a short neck and most mock necks look like full turtleneck on me, and full turtlenecks have way too much fabric that I almost have to fold it over twice 😂
I'm not 100% sure on my kibbe but I think I'm a natural, I can wear wide, slouchy, knitted roll necks, but anything with a high neckline fitted to me skin makes me look so constrained. I also have quite a blunt natural-style essence in my face. So its just a no 😂
Another great video! I learn so much from you. I also want to mention that if black doesn't suit you, wearing it that close to your face can look pretty bad. (Especially if you're old like me!)
Of course your uncle said this! #firstgenimmigrant here and we know our fam is direct 😆 In all honesty, you always look good. But now I understand why I also don’t look great in a turtleneck. 💕
100% true ! Also, if you have a Romantic or Theatrical Romantic essence, a basic dark turtleneck might look too "geometric" for you. R and TR look better if the turtleneck has an intricate edge (picot, lettuce hem or lace) or luxurious fuzzy (mohair, fur or lacey knit reminiscent of Orenbourg shawls). You can wear a collar in these materials on top of a turtleneck and you will look fabulous.
I liked your mockneck clip, to me the focus was drawn up to your eyes vs now when your bare chest seems like an extension of your chin and thus making your face seem longer now vs. when you have a higher neckline.
Just to add, turtleneck and infinity scarves do the trick of a turtleneck but are easier to adjust to your personal preference, are generally cheaper and come in a wider variety of colours
Interesting I'm still not sure what my Kibby type is, but I know that fitted clothes are what look best for me, as well as V shape/ turtleneck neckline (though I need to wear my hair up when I wear turtleneck). My neck is a bit long and I have a bit of broad shoulders. I wonder where I fall to 😅😅
Congratulations for the high quality of your content. Startet to watch all your videos👍really really good! Hope soon you have much more followers, you deserve it! Best wishes for 2024!😊
Great video as always and it made me realize something important! As a soft Autumn with a really really long and slim neck, wide lower third and square defined jaw, broader but bony shoulders, small bust and small waist even a (tight fitting) black turtleneck looks better on me than a v-neck top in my best colors… I think it‘s because it compacts the whole area from jaw to waist and makes it seem more structured and defined, and kind of tackles a lot of areas all in one (covers extremely long neck, diffuses the transition from broad to too slim to broad, defines chin area, accentuates petite frame while covering visible bones ribs and throat, accentuates waist line and creates an inverted triangle shape towards my waistline where only a weird long straight line would be), so just like in color analysis where there is a primary characteristic, I think in our body types (I never fit any category except the wave type and have a hard time finding clothes at all because I‘m tall but also petite) there is one as well, and for me it just has to be my long neck. Also, I personally think that our distinctive features in our faces like for me my square face and jaw is something we‘re supposedly trying to conceal but I found myself also liking it when we bring that distinctive feature out, I don’t know why… I think it’s noticeable in Liv Tyler because she has that „long“ feature but with long hair and a middle part and a v-neck dress she looks stunning and ethereal! So maybe she is an example of accentuating what you’re supposed to hide? and I personally think a black turtleneck can look good on anyone, it‘s such an understated and elegant look and brings attention to our unique faces nevermind any shadows that might be accentuated. I think you looked beautiful in that black mock neck!
Thanks for this comment! I agree with you - although from a balance perspective a lot of tips will lean towards concealing or making certain characteristics less prominent, but I think accentuating them also brings out the uniqueness of your features! ❤
Hiii! I wanted to suggest a video on what features work best with various facial piercings (for example different locations for nose and lip piercings) and also stretched lobes?!
Funny, since your weak chin video I've been experimenting with dark colors covering some of my neck to make my jaw look a bit stronger and I've been digging it. This video totally confirms what I was going for. So all the black turtlenecks for me yay =)
I belong to the Gamine family. I need high neckline and dark colours, especially near my face. I am a soft winter and need contrast in my clothes too. Light colours blur my contours, which doesn't look good. I have a normal-length neck, narrow shoulders and a rather small bust. Dark turtlenecks look great on me ;-) That's just how different we are. I don't think a white T-shirt is for everyone either, which is always touted as a must-have. Thank you so much for another great video!
Hi Jenn, your unique perspective is why I love your channel and keep coming back. I have a long neck but fairly narrow shoulders, so am always looking to visually broaden my shoulders. (lucky you!). This explains I guess why I naturally gravitate toward black turtlenecks. So often I think we instinctively know what looks good on us even though we may not know exactly why. You explained it beautifully.
Thank you, Jenn! Always interesting. I love most turtle necks on me, but almost all give me a headache within an hour. My body hates anything fitted on neck, waist or torso....anywhere in general. Terribly frustrating. I am Natural in Kibbe, so I am learning to see my figure differently after so many fashion difficulties.
I don't like black turtle necks. I have one sitting in my closet, I never wear it. It's restricting on the neck and also not my best color. Took me a while to notice it.
I'm very tall (6'3"), and I have a long neck, and I like emphasizing it. I tend to go for open necklines also because I have broader shoulders and a large chest, so I feel like scoop necks and mock necks really close me off.
I love turtlenecks on people, especially sleeveless. But I can’t wear anything around my neck, it feels as if it suffocates me. Also I have big chest so turtlenecks are impossible for me 😏
Loving your videos!! I also have more width, and my jawline brings more attention to my lower face, so turtlenecks always have been a no for me 😅. I knew it seemed awkward, but I didn't know why. Also, the visual weight video changed my life!! Thank you so much for the content
Great video Jen, I'm just not a fan of the black turtleneck, as I think that much matt black fabric right next to the face is not flattering on many people. It just absorbs all the light. Also sometimes you end up with a bit of the floating head effect. That said I don't agree with your uncle!
Hi Jenn, love your videos :) I tried to book an analysis on your website, however, it said that there was no availability. Is this because your fully booked or are you not offering that anymore? :)
Can you talk about other necklines as well? I’ve found that crew necks look better on me than v or scoop necks. I’m a gamine, and I heard that this makes sense with my body type, but I don’t understand why.
I have a recessed jaw/chin and I love a dark coloured ,thin ,cotton and fitted turtleneck but the chunky ones look horrendous. I think that is because I'm narrow and delicate and my face is short and I lack any real sharpness in my jawline to define my face in separation from the chunky turtle neck, so it just kind of drowns me really ?
I love turtlenecks, but agree that black turtlenecks have never worked for me! Because I have long black hair, I find that it makes my face look like a floating void.
I think the mock turtle neck looks really good on you, personally. It really highlights how shapely and petite/fit you are around the shoulder and neck area. I think it draws attention away from all the visible throat "organs and muscles" that us slender women have on display. I don't think your chin is too prominent, I think it makes you look more elegant, not baby faced. I think you should wear it again!
Aw thank you for this comment! For a long time I wanted a shorter chin because I thought it would make me look younger, but over time I've learned (and am still learning) to embrace my features for what they are and how they are :) Happy Holidays!
I also like a lot the black piece on you - brings some sharpness and energy. On the other hand the black turtleneck on Gigi (the pic with weird shape sunglasses) looks just awful, she is a beutiful lady, and on that pic she looks like an alcoholic the morning after… so puffy with ill shaped chin area…not sure who chose that look for her 😢
I understand what you are saying, but are we creating self hate? I’m plus sized and for years didn’t have options, so I got what was available. Only we as women are this critical, except your uncle. BTW: I would be blunt with him, glad he’s your uncle not mine. Your chin is beautiful. These rules aka guidelines make women even more hyper critical about themselves when someone might just like how they feel in their clothing and skin. I was bullied as a child and I’m not sure how to feel about all these rules. Plus a variety of makeup was not available during the 80s and 90s for black women, contrasting still is difficult. I’m trying to be open minded. Why can’t we like what we like?
You looked absolutely fabulous with a black turtleneck on this early video of yours. I mean it!
Aw thank you! ❤️
Totally! Very elegant look and she pulled it off great

I totally agree! Bravo!
I love turtlenecks, so much thats one of the most present necklines in my closet, i feel so comfortable in them when its a little chilly to cold.
I'm super grateful for this video. It is the perfect example of the difference between professionals and amateurs.

Jenn, your chin is absolutely beautiful! Here, I even paused the video to write that! Now back to the content ;)
Heheheh you are so sweetttt

Sounds like a tan brown camel or creamy ecru turtleneck could work better for your colouring & Kibbe Type!
I personally like how black mock neck looked on you. Honestly, on that frames my attention is attracted to your eyes!
Thank you for this! :)

Me with 3 black turtlenecks and 3 crew cuts 😵💫😵💫😵💫

I’ve always wondered why this look never worked for me!
Wow. You explain these theories so well. I’m floored. 😮 Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Of course your uncle said this!
#firstgenimmigrant here and we know our fam is direct 😆
In all honesty, you always look good. But now I understand why I also don’t look great in a turtleneck. 💕

If you’re dark skinned, would it be better to wear a light turtleneck?
I think so!
Funny, since your weak chin video I've been experimenting with dark colors covering some of my neck to make my jaw look a bit stronger and I've been digging it. This video totally confirms what I was going for. So all the black turtlenecks for me yay =)

Great follow up to the previous video on short chins! I wish I also had a fashion designer uncle to bluntly tell me when something doesn't work 😅
Yes he is very offensive at times but also quite helpful 😂😂😂
Hi Jenn, your unique perspective is why I love your channel and keep coming back. I have a long neck but fairly narrow shoulders, so am always looking to visually broaden my shoulders. (lucky you!). Hey Virginia! Thank you always for your sweet comments ❤️ Wishing you and your loved ones a fun and safe holiday season!!
As someone with a short neck, turtlenecks look horrible on me. 😢
I miss a section about double chins and/or horizontal lines on the neck and how to deal with them
I have a video called "Hairstyles for chubby faces" where I talk about double chins and jowls :)
Also I have big chest so turtlenecks are impossible for me 😏
I think you look beautiful in the video with the mock neck!
Thank you! ❤️
Thank you
Short neck, wide shoulders and large bust. I don’t wear turtlenecks.
Well, when your neck start to go south, you don’t really want to bring attention to it so you don’t wear a turtleneck or a cowl neck.
Loving your videos!! I also have more width, and my jawline brings more attention to my lower face, so turtlenecks always have been a no for me 😅. I knew it seemed awkward, but I didn't know why. Also, the visual weight video changed my life!! Thank you so much for the content
Thank you for the comment ❤ I'm glad my content has been helpful for your personal style journey!
Great video Jen, I'm just not a fan of the black turtleneck, as I think that much matt black fabric right next to the face is not flattering on many people. It just absorbs all the light. Also sometimes you end up with a bit of the floating head effect. That said I don't agree with your uncle!
Haha thank you ❤️ I agree that black is not as easy of a color to wear for everyone as it’s often claimed to be!
Hi Jenn, love your videos :) I tried to book an analysis on your website, however, it said that there was no availability. Is this because your fully booked or are you not offering that anymore? :)
Same. I am trying to book but it is saying no availability.
Hi! I’m fully booked until the end of March and will be re-opening my calendar on April 1st at 10am PST!
Can you talk about other necklines as well? I’ve found that crew necks look better on me than v or scoop necks. I’m a gamine, and I heard that this makes sense with my body type, but I don’t understand why.
Great content as always! I have been following your channel since your first vidoes. Amazing how the channel grew. Congratulations, great job!
I know you have been my OG subscriber!! I'm so thankful for your support and I'm happy that you are continuing to enjoy my content. Happy Holidays! :D
Thanks, Jenn!
You are so welcome! ❤️
Harsh, but God bless the people who tell you the truth. They care
Makes total sense!
I can't wear high necks because my booberoos are big and high necks give me monoboob 😢
Yes - another great point which I didn't bring up in this vid!
I feel like I look good in turtle necks, but not necessarily in black
Now I know why turtlenecks look so damn chic on others but on me they look off!
I'm glad the video was helpful! :D
I love turtlenecks, but agree that black turtlenecks have never worked for me! Because I have long black hair, I find that it makes my face look like a floating void.
I agree :)
@@stylerefinement Jenn, you have a gamine beauty that should never be underestimated.
I have a black turtleneck that I’ve never worn. Waste of money.
I also like a lot the black piece on you - brings some sharpness and energy. On the other hand the black turtleneck on Gigi (the pic with weird shape sunglasses) looks just awful, she is a beutiful lady, and on that pic she looks like an alcoholic the morning after… so puffy with ill shaped chin area…not sure who chose that look for her 😢
Yeah the loose turtleneck look was really off on Gigi I thought 😅
