DIY Van Prep and Subfloor - Kilmat, Minicell, XPS Foam Board, Plywood | Van Build Series (Ep. 7)

  • In this episode of our van build series, we rip out our Ford Transit factory mat, give the van floor a good cleaning/priming, apply sound deadening, and install our subfloor.
Our subfloor consists of a minicell layer, XPS rigid foam board, and plywood. Since we have a Ford Transit high roof, we weren't too worried about losing some of the height.
As much as we tried to remind each other about not covering the area for the spare tire, we forgot. So, we're going to figure that out before we actually add on our flooring layer. Would love any tips you have!

Yogurt pretzels! Great job. Looking forward to the rest of your build.

Nice! I built my Transit van floor similar to yours except that I used construction adhesive (foam compatible) instead of spray adhesive. It was so very tedious, but now I’m glad that I did it that way. We’ve been camping in freezing weather and the floor has been comfortable. I also used a high density version of the xps foam board instead of the stuff from Home Depot. I’m looking forward the the rest of your conversion work 😊

Well done, I think this is the best way to do the sub floor too....Keep up the good work.

Yes!! Lots to figure out but it’s so fun to finish each step of the van build and slowly see it come to life! So many great videos and resources out there.

Definitely. We’re finding lots of good helpful tips. In our videos, we’re calling it the “fall and figure it out on the way down” approach 😂

Great project, you are doing things well. To avoid floor skeeking, I left 1/2 inch of play on the edges and applied spray foam to seal this.

Thank you!! And yes great point! We ended up adding in spray foam (used Great Stuff) around the edges to seal ☺️

Just a quick heads up...did you create a hole to access the spare tire mechanism to drop the spare? Don't recall seeing an access hole on that last piece. Nice job!

Haha well funny story… despite us reminding each other over and over during the minicell layer, we spaced out on the XPS and plywood layer so will have to work through that and create a hole/access point before we build over! If you have any suggestions let us know 😅

Great video. How tick is the plywood? Also what kind of plywood is this? There are many types in the store. Thx

Hi! We just used 1/2” birch plywood from our local hardware store. You won’t need thicker than that for the subfloor. If you have access to Baltic birch, even better.
