DIY Van Building and Staining Overhead/Upper Cabinets | Van Build Series (Ep. 17)
We're continuing our Ford Transit van conversion! In this episode of our van build series, we build overhead/upper cabinets from 1/2" baltic birch plywood. The 1/2" baltic birch plywood allows us to keep our cabinets light and strong.
We were happy to have some friends join us in this episode to get us started on the cabinets. Starting a new van conversion project can always feel daunting, but we had fun stumbling through a template together and getting our first cabinets built out.
In our van conversion, we wanted to make the cabinets with stained wood as a nice accent against our neutral walls. Staining wood was harder than we anticipated, but after some trial and error, we're happy with the final result! The main takeaway from the staining process is to use a wood conditioner before staining -- your results will be much more even!
The LED light strips were also something we wanted as separate lighting from our ceiling puck lights and they added a nice touch!
We hope you find this episode helpful and entertaining. Don't forget to give us a thumbs up and tell us what you think in the comments!
We plan to share more about our DIY van shower and other cabinetry in the next episodes of our #vanbuild series, so stay tuned and subscribe to our channel if you want to follow along. Thanks for supporting us!

How to Install Eberspacher (Espar) Airtronic 3 Gas Heater in DIY Van | Van Build Series (Ep. 16)
มุมมอง 202วันที่ผ่านมา
In this episode of our van build series, Aaron installs the Eberspacher (Espar) AS3 B2L Gasoline Heater under the passenger seat in our Ford Transit. We were torn on whether we really needed a heater in the van or not. But after realizing we felt "cold" in the 60s in California, we figured a heater would be well worth it for us in the colder months! This unit also works in up to 13,000ft elevat...
DIY Van Ceiling, Walls, and Floor w/ Plywood & Sheet Vinyl | Van Build Series (Ep. 15)
มุมมอง 36621 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this episode of our van build series, we focus on our ceiling, walls, and floor. We start by building our ceiling and walls with Baltic birch plywood. Once the ceiling and walls were up, we primed and painted them. Then we finished up by installing sheet vinyl on our floor. We decided on sheet vinyl because it is fairly easy to install, durable, waterproof, and inexpensive relative to other ...
DIY Van Building Bump Outs (No Flares) - Ford Transit | Van Build Series (Ep. 14)
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In this episode of our van build series, we frame and build bump-out boxes for our shower and convertible bed/dinette area. The shower bump out helps utilize some space for shampoo/conditioner/shower things that would have otherwise been wasted. The bed bump out helps extend the length of our bed since we're sleeping width-wise in the van (pro: more space, con: less insulation). If you find thi...

    That was a lot of work but great install but I would feel more comfortable if you would run the exhaust to behind the driver side away from the side door in the back. Less chance of getting Carmen dioxide in the van when you're camping. Could also get a trim piece by VEPURLT that's Stainless Steel 316 Thru Hull Exhaust Skin, 24mm Tube Pipe Socket Hardware for Diesel heaters Exhaust Pipe. But yeah great job but go the extra mile on this one for your safety. 👍👍

      @itstimetocrunch 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! It’s kind of a calculated risk, but we don’t plan to run the heater with the door open. I believe there is also some constraints with the length of exhaust pipe recommended which conflicts with running it over to the driver side. Even without the heater, all mobile homes should have a CO and smoke alarm!

    So all of the van building videos and forms I’ve been on, I haven’t seen the low E used up against the steel like that. Is that for a kind of thermal break? Would it cut down on the condensation due to the fact that there’s no cold steel to collect moisture out of the air?

    • @itstimetocrunch
      @itstimetocrunch 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes exactly, in our case it’s mostly to help reduce the thermal bridging between the van walls and wood framing but it would help reduce condensation too. Many people use Low E for creating a vapor barrier but with its own set of pros and cons. We believe it’s best to not over think it!

    Nice! I built my Transit van floor similar to yours except that I used construction adhesive (foam compatible) instead of spray adhesive. It was so very tedious, but now I’m glad that I did it that way. We’ve been camping in freezing weather and the floor has been comfortable. Hi, thanks for the new video, I have really enjoyed following your van build series so far! :) I haven't build a van myself, but as that's a dream I am hoping will come a reality in the future I have been watching a lot of van build content and here are some of my thoughts: - Because you are going with the dinette/bench-bed-option, you don't get the same dog-den under the bed as with fixed bed. Is this something you don't need for Bailey (sleeping with you for example on the bed?) or are going to build some other place for her? Where are you thinking about placing her food/water bowls? I have seen some people do pull-out build-in drawers for them from the kitchen galley which seem like a good idea. - Are you going to have a second table for the swivel-seat to use? As the table at the back is in use when in bed-mode and also if the other person is using it. Maybe also table with the laguna-type leg? Then it could also be used as extra counter space when cooking or another option could be to add pop-up counter extension at the end of the kitchen counter (or both!). - Remember to check the swivel seat height! Usually people need to add little platform at the base of the seat, because otherwise it's too high and your feet end up hanging in the air, which in the long run is super uncomfortable. - Do you need to add an outlet in the front, to use when working from the swivel-seat? to charge laptop etc. - If you can, I would recommend building those inside-the-wall-nooks when possible, for example in the wall above the kitchen for spices etc. and in the wall in the shower. - Good idea to raise the fridge higher from the ground! What are you going to store above it? Is it big enough, that this could be hanging space for clothes? Looking forward to your next videos :) Ps. Bailey looks like the cutest dog ever!

      Hi, thanks for following our series! We're glad you're enjoying it :) We've dreamed about building it since 2020 and it's amazing to make it a reality -- hoping you get to make it a reality soon too! -Bailey will most likely sleep in the bed with us! We're thinking of potentially creating a little gate that we can put at the edge of the dinette (between the dinette and cabinets) to create a temporary den for her. But most likely we won't need it because she's needy and will always be with us haha. For feeding her, we usually do timed feedings rather than leaving food out. We have some collapsible bowls that we'll probably bring with us to save space! The pull-out drawers are a cool idea though! -We haven't 100% decided on the table situation for the swivel seat yet. We're thinking of doing a flip-out countertop at the edge of our kitchen section that would swing out toward the swivel seat. Hoping to get creative so we can use it as a countertop or a second table if we can work out an adjustable height/make it the right size. -Good point on the swivel height! We're planning to install a heater under the passenger seat too, so we'll definitely check the height and add in a platform! -I think from the swivel seat we'll plug into the outlet that we have in our kitchen. -Yes, the inside-the-wall-nooks seem to be great! We were definitely planning on one in our shower. I think the kitchen would also be really helpful to have! -We're torn between 2 fridges. If we do the larger one, I'm not sure if we'll be able to hang clothes above. If we do the smaller fridge, we might be able to hang some clothes! We're planning to have some (very little) space to hang a few items between our shower and driver seat. We'll see! + Bailey is the cutest dog ever haha. She says thank you! :)

    Just a quick heads up...did you create a hole to access the spare tire mechanism to drop the spare? Don't recall seeing an access hole on that last piece. Nice job!

      Haha well funny story… despite us reminding each other over and over during the minicell layer, we spaced out on the XPS and plywood layer so will have to work through that and create a hole/access point before we build over! If you have any suggestions let us know 😅
