INSULATE VAN FLOOR for TALL people // Van Build Ep. 3

  • This video is all about what we did to insulate our van floor. We did A LOT of research to make sure we had the best floor insulation. nearly everyone in the #vanlife community said to insulate the floors as much as possible. Dylan is 6'1'' while Avery is 5'7'', we defiantly couldn't raise our floor much because of Dylan's height. Most people either don't insulate or raise the floor with battens and insulate with foam board pieces where the gaps lay. We really went on a ledge with our van floor insulation and wanted to go with something that has never been done before or at least we've never seen anyone do. Most of our van floor has an insulated value of R-6 which is decent. The nice thing is we were able to use the existing subfloor and OEM parts as well as not giving up any height! It will be interesting to see how the floor holds up in colder weather, but feel free to let us know what you think about our insulation method in the comments.

@@thewildearthlings How have you found the insulation qualities of the foam? What would you do it differently if you were to insulate a van floor again?

@@rosemead9129 1 year later... lol. We have been inside vans that have insulation and vans that don't or non at all. They all feel pretty much the same cold, but just like in a house, floors are cold. So I guess in a perfect build, we would build radiant floors or go spray foam.

I'll be going through this, husband is 6'4. Im 5'3. My issue is trying to make a bed area, where one side is, like 5'4 and the other side is at least 6'4. We would waste too much real estate having one long bed. I see an electric bread knife in our future. Thank you for the tips on insulation, it does feel like so much is lost to it. Im so lazy, I can see me throwing a bunch of carpets. Kudos that you figured it out.

Do not do what they did in this video, terrible idea to fill in the struts with insulation, it will block air flow creating a lot of condensation and humidity that will then bring rust and mold.

Sorry for the late reply. We went for the bed/bench combo so we have a long bed that fits dylan 6'1. We bought a KING dunlap mattress and cut it up to fit perfectly. As for the floor, we have been inside vans that do have floor insulation and that don't... TBH they all feels the same lol. Good luck on your build!

They have so many thermal bridges. This is not the way to insulate a van floor.

It's not perfect and if we could go back and redo our floor we definitely would, however this was done back in 2020, you live and you learn lol.

you are so right, more than 98% of people do this, it is all wrong and causes rust and mold.....
