A fine actor, from Stage Fright, Cottage to Let and Hue & Cry etc etc, such wonderful performances in each role he played, and for me Christmas wouldn’t be the same without watching A Christmas Carol, Alastair Sim as Scrooge is supreme and the finest ever.

This is just wonderful. I wish more of Alastair Sim's movies were readily available in the U.S. "Scrooge" is immortal, but we need Alastair Sim more than once a year!

"An Inspector Calls" at 61 its my first vivid memory of Alister Simms, and what an outstanding performance he delivered, always used to watch his movies with my late mother as a small girl and still watch him today, Wonderful Memories Gone By

Loved Alastair Sims so much. Scrooge could only be played by him in my opinion, he owned every part he played. You wish people like him could live forever.

His daughter Merlith is really lovely, both to look at and to listen to. Her voice has the same lightness and precision as her father's, and she seems constantly on the verge of giggling. Lucky was the man who married her.

I absolutely agree. It was a Christmas tradition for our family to watch his version every year on Christmas Eve. With other actors, you either never really believe that they were truly nasty or, conversely, you only see that they are relieved to have been 'reprieved' at the end. With AS, you really saw him as a horrible, empty person at the beginning, and then see him really learn from his past mistakes, I always tear up at, "Forgive me, Fan", and feel he has truly had a tranformative experience. And when he awakens, to find himself still alive on Christmas Day, he is not just 'relieved', he has a reborn: exhibiting a childlike, absolute joy not just because he is alive, but because he has been given a chance to make changes in his own life they will benefit other people.

Alaistair Sim was a fabulous actor. An illustration of just how influential he was can be seen in a performance he didn't give. He turned down the role of Professor Marcus in "The Ladykillers". Alec Guinness, who accepted the part, played Professor Marcus as a version of Alistair Sim.

I had the incredible joy of seeing the Chichester The Magistrate and to this day remember the washing up scene like it was yesterday. Many years later on a train going across Canada I had dinner with an English couple. Somehow the conversation turned to that performance and the lady told me it was her first job as Assistant Stage Manager all those years ago. She use to time that scene - which apparently in Pinero’s script is a mere one line stage direction - and said that every night was slightly different because Mr Sim always judged by the audience reaction how far he could take it. It was one of the finest pieces of comedy I had ever since and I still can recall it all this years after.

MY ALL TIME FAVOURTE COMEDY ACTOR,. HE HAD NO CLOSE RIVALS. I HAD NEVER SEEN THIS VERY GOOD TRIBUTE BEFORE, IT IS WELL MADE. I ALSO HAD NO IDEA HIS FILM CAREER HAD BEGUN IN THE 1930'S, I SHALL SEEK THEM OUT. HIS DAUGHTER IS THE VERY LIKENESS OF HER MOTHER, WITH NO HINTS OF BEING ALISTAIR'S DAUGHTER, APART FROM HER VERY LIKEABLE PLEASANT CHARACTER.

When was this doc made? Early 90s?
Mr Sim was a consummate actor who belongs with the likes of John Mills, Bernard Miles, Alec Guinness, in that time that wasnt too long ago but is rapidly becoming out of reach. The sort of actor who would appear in a film during the week if you were off school or work. He reminded me physically and ( when his Edinburgh accent was used) of my late grandad who was born very close to Mr Sims birthplace.
Like most on here, Christmas Carol is an annual treat for me.
Beautifully made documentary about a superb person. Lovely to see both his wife and daughter on there too.

    One of my favorite actors.
He could be sinister without being actually evil! How many actors could pull that off?
Even in his sinister roles, there was a very subtle humorous quality.

By far his Christmas Carol is the best version but as much as it might seem sacrilege, I like the non-restored version better since the fading and darkness and scratches added a sense to the atmosphere. And by all means it should not be viewed on high definition unless you want to determine the thread count on their costumes! LOL.

Watch his comedy genius in "School For Scoundrels" with Ian Carmichael and Terry Thomas. It never dates and should never be remade.

He was nonpareil in "Green for Danger" and "An Inspector Calls." He made acting look so darn easy.
