  • A quick and easy way to run your Big Buddy or Mr Heater fan on 12 volts instead of burning through D Batteries all the time.
Here is a link to the step down unit I used: amzn.to/2FG1Cvf

I installed the mod and attached an SAE power socket, I can then use a detachable 12v cig cord when no AC outlet is available. I left the original 6v power socket for just that option. The 12v cig cord is used to power other items as well (so it's not a dedicated cord). Thanks for the video! Great tutorial!

Just ordered the step down converter. Thanks for the vid. I've never put batteries in because it adds quite a bit of weight.

That was my thought too. no weight added and if I need the fan great, if not, its there if I need to.

Thanks Darren. Got it installed tonight. Yep. Hooked up to the Energized Outdoors FLX-28 or LX-9.
Truly appreciate your vids. They are super practical and we often think along the same lines.
Just bought a Flame King propane refill kit too with 3 additional 1lbs making 4 total. Dialed.

Why not just make an external cord and use the step down transformer in line? Or buy the $10 6v cigarette plug adapter?

Great idea. But running the fan will take a lot of power from the fish finder battery . Your 8 hour battery life just went down to 2 hours. Probably be best to buy another battery for just running the fan.

btw. a SLA battery is less likely to explode if, in a confined space w/ an open flame source.... a unsealed lead acid battery ie: car battery, marine batt. or 4wheeler batt. are essentially a HHO generator.. and emit hydrogen gas , the most unstable element in the known universe. there are warnings printed all over the batteries. be safe guys... if your gonna use one of them, run a long wire away from the flame. wire is cheaply found, speaker wire, an old ext. cord or a broken hairdryer, toaster, lamp ect. would work.

Does the step down transformer add any extra power loss? Does it heat up inside of the heater? I am considering a mod but if it will add to more battery drain besides the fan it won't be worth it.

Honestly, I ran the mod for a while, and decided that the fan really sucks on the Buddy Heater (mod or no mod). I bought a rechargeable clip on fan from Amazon and it's 100x better. Here's a link to the one I use: amzn.to/2LQIz6X

Can you still use the ac adapter to run it at home with this mod? Also have you seen the pilot light baffle from endless ice? It works good and makes getting the heater lit on a windy day a bit easier.

I can't confirm that but I didn't change anything with that connection, so I assume it would still work. Yes I have seen the baffles. It's a great mod. Thanks

I've only put one 20lb propane tank through my heater and the fan literally snapped at the shaft and pulled the wires out when it broke. Looked for a replacement fan on the Mr.Heater website to find out they are charging 35% of the initial purchase price plus shipping. What a piece of crap rip off.

I got your solution for $12.00-$18.99 and no installation. Found on Amazon and in Big Lots stores. under tent fans for camping. Its a Battery operated fan. It is much quieter than the built-in buddy fan and uses half the batteries. It also has 2 speeds for fan and separate LED light ring/stand. Can use fan and/or light separately. I found that the fan on high is as strong or stronger than the built in buddy fan. You can place on floor in front or on the side to aim your heat. (very stable base) It also has a built in hanger to blow hot air back down from the ceiling. Mounted on curtain rod, the light is adequate in a power failure. Of course both fan and light are great for summer power failures and camping.
Found on Amazon ; ODOLAND PORTABLE EMERGENCY LED CAMPING LANTERN WITH CEILING FAN. $18.99
Also found on BIG LOTS ; TENT FAN WITH LED LIGHT 65 LUMEN for only $12. includes 2 D Batteries. That's the one I have.

I was very disappointed the new Big Buddy heater didn't come with the fan. They are out of stock on the Mr. Heater website. I found the fan here: www.ebay.com/itm/324316697056
Works fantastic. Heats way better and I do use less propane. Hope this helps someone else!
