My experience with the Tello video and still photos was very very good don’t rule it out. I just bought mine it’s January 2020 and I made sure the software was updated as the directions say to do. Video is very stable even at high altitudes of 99 feet up. Incredible. I’m so glad I got it.
Finally someone that takes about the stutter issue! Makes it really only useful for a reference. Exactly my experience. I needed up putting a tiny wireless fpv camera on it and can now fly with my googles. Thanks
Great solution! Which camera do you recommend?
Not sure. I took it off an old one i had. I know they sell from 15-30 and you can get a good setup on amazon
Some firmware updates seems to fix this along with starting it in a certain order
Got mine yesterday updated the firmware and no stutter. Video Very smooth going forward and backward. Yawing and banking you get minor frame skips
kicknadeadcat your right the firmware upgrade helped s ton. Still get drop outs but 85% better for me
What caught my attention to this drone is that it is more than a done. The thing is a good tool as an introduction to programming.
I also think it’s important to realize the level of the equipment... if you want a really really good camera you get a Mavic... that’s professional level, if you want something high-end nonprofessional you get the air, if you want a really really good camera drone for fun you get the spark... if you want a little fun drone toy to play around with in your house, from your bed or the couch like I do then you get one of these... remember, you’re spending 100 bucks... and for 100 bucks this is an excellent by, very smart and worth every penny ;)
I'm really impressed with the DJI Tello, I would highly recommend this drone as well. I included some sample footage from the Tello in my review and I noticed that the pixelation only occurs when you move abruptly. Slow movements seem to be a lot more enjoyable to consume. Fantastic review, you have gained a subscriber :D
Interesting review! I also bought a Tello last Christmas, I'd say it's a very good drone for a beginner pilot. I also noticed the missed frames in the video, mostly caused by weak wifi signal or wifi interference. The trick is to fly away from.other sources of wifi, maybe use a tablet for a stronger wifi signal or a wifi extender, which greatly improves the video transmission quality over wifi.
Ultimately the Tello should have had a micro sd card slot built into the drone for perfect video recording but they decided to omit this feature and send the video across wifi, which is not a great design choice! So it is limited in that respect, I tend to get around it by editing out the glitches.
It can produce some stunning footage in the right hands and the outdoor photos are beautiful 👍😎
Using the tablet as a wifi extender?
This review was really solid and well produced. Great job! As a non-drone user, looking for my first one, the only thing missing from this review that I expected to see at the end of it was this: If not the DJI Ryze Tello, then what? The end of this review should lead into your review of what you DO recommend as a comparable substitute that doesn't have the latent navigation or video issues. Thanks!
Great point, I should’ve thought of that! In my opinion I would recommend finding a gently used DJI Phantom 3 standard. You get a significant improvement in the drone experience, and they can now be found used for around $200
Are there places that are better than others to buy used drones through? Craigslist?
That’s why they give you prop guards...
Lol, i’ve always hated using prop guards because they increase wind problems and reduce battery life. But yes, I would break less props that way!
it is definitely worth noting that every other review I have seen crashed with the guards and did not break props. that's a user configuration issue, not a design flaw.
Yeah. Guards are worth using for a beginner like me.
If you use a controller you will not crash the drone as much. Problems occurs mostly while using the phone.
We had a tello hang up 15 meter up in a tree on its propguards!
Looking forward to the arrival of mine. One thing to note: the drone comes with propeller guards fitted. If you're flying around trees and crashing into them, presumably leaving the guards on would be a better idea? Folk using this video as prime reference might not realise this.
Great review! I'm glad you got started right away and stuck to facts! Also glad you provided samples of the still photos. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Any drone reviews on this drone without that music going.
05:40 you can always get me with that sweeeeet rolling shutter effect
Bro, this video was really helpful
the update has improved it greatly
It helped, but I’m still getting jitters in my video.
I own one, also, read lots of good comments. This is an excellent drone at this price point. Excellent for students as there are 3rd party apps, specifically for the tello. MIT scratch works well for the budding programmer in some, python capable. Camera is just fine for the novice. Since it's not gps , it works fine indoors, even in tight spaces. Takes bumps without great penalty and the guards are securely placed. So if you're finally taking the toe dip into the world of drones, this no licences required one may just be the one to feel out the hobby. Best wishes to all.
Thanks so much for the honest review!
Great honest review bro...very helpful👌
just watched another review. it sends the data to your phone to be saved. maybe thats whats causing the lag. a pity
Thankyou so much this helped me a lot great job on the honest rieview
Great quality video 👍👍👍 You can fix the stutter with switching the app first then the drone.
I’m returning this review video since the videography wasn’t what I expected it to be (for the price).
The choppy video is caused by slow sd card or settings on your video editor not being able to keep up with the bit rate. I had this problem and that's how I solved it. Good luck.
This drone does not take an SD card, it’s streams the video directly to your phone. I have a brand new iPhone and even with my phone only a foot away from the drone I still get choppy video. I tried using a newer android phone and had the same issue. Even before sending the video to my editing computer (a 2017 fully loaded iMac running Final Cut Pro X) the video was choppy.
Unfortunately, based on the Amazon reviews I see that I’m not the only one experiencing this issue.
Set the bit rate on 2!
First and foremost it's a 100€ drone and secondly it uses wifi to be controlled and transmit video. I have actually bought a drone for that price. The latency was about 3s with the camera, the fps was about 4 with vga video quality (240p). So I have to say this drone is 4 times better in comparison with the one I bought.
Damn the jittery video kills it for me...
Thank you for the detailed video.
Please do a re review. After the updates. The video is far more stable now. Probably you can do one with a WiFi extender.
Well thank you for me anyway. I already have , well something over 20+ Quad copters now and even if they have cameras I NEVER have even once used them. I simply want to get out and let it rip so to speak. So I just began to consider THIS but using THIS ONLY for pictures & video. Now I have to think and fond a different solution. But I suspect that "solution" is gonna be in the over $500.00 range to sadly. So yours is actually the only thing I found that actually concentrates on MY interest. GREAT answers to my questions so thank you very much for the time you spent to document, record & edit all this,
Mike
Thanks Mike!
Why 2 years later is this drone still £99 🤔 is drone technology not developing fast?
Turn your phone to airplane mode. Bluetooth should be off. It seems to suffer from interference from other WiFi enabled devices. I have shot tons of videos and with these things in mind. There is NO stuttering at all. Also you can get a signal amplifier and it helps to fix the lagging and stuttering issues.
It's only 99 and they do good pic but cannot expect too much for video if the lighting is bad. I have this drone and it's good for small group shots and etc.
I was really interested in the Tello until I noticed that the camera is fixed in a forward facing position. Would be nice if it was able to tilt down, automatically or manually. Good video! Thanks!
Buy the DJI spark.
It's not that much more but it's got a gimbal(2 axis) and a 1080p camera.
Use a Wifi Extender for not only more range, but improved video quality as well as it will eliminate much of the video stuttering.
Thank you very much for the insights on the video quality.
I try cleaning the lens with a Qtip cleaners with windex and it seems like a ruin the camera lens. The picture, video and what I see on my iPad screen looks foggy. I try cleaning but the hole is to small. Any idea how to take it apart and clean the lens. A video would be nice. There’s nothing on TH-cam
Actual content starts at about 1:45.
Thank you for the review sir
i love tello because of the stability flight ,like the cam but hate the connection to the phone because the video jump one or two seconds to the next video frame.I would like the drone have a sd card inside!
Thank you very much for this review!
Most DJI footage from even more expensive models have that choppy look to it at lower frame rates. It also gets worse in wind and sport flying. Why, you ask? Because that's how DJI gives the appearance of smooth stable video. It drops frames that are out of allignment with the rest. Stuttering is also caused by poor wifi signal. Prioritizes control signal over video latency.
The video stuttering is only on an Android phone. With an I-phone the video is very smooth, with only the occasional frame drop. It makes a real differnce.
He was using an iPhone in this video, so...
Nice review
If anyone is wondering if you don't have enough money for a more expensive drone get this when you save it is a fun learning drone that is still top quality
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Is it possible to buy a better quality propeller? If they are cheap would they be interchangeable with the higher end dji
There is something called prob guards
$$99 ... its a best drone you can get.... i bought my yesterday, and i really like it. for actually $100... i think it’s good , fun, and reliable drone...
For $99 I'm not sure how much more tech you think they were going to put into this thing regarding the camera quality. Also, complaining about the propellers breaking when you removed the guards is just silly. Why does everyone want to remove the guards on drones? It doesn't make the drone look cooler... not that that should matter anyway.
I’ve removed the guards from all of my drones because it makes them less prone to the effects of high wind and the battery lasts longer. Props are cheap, I don’t mind replacing them. I prefer to take risks with my drones to get cool shots, sometimes that means getting close to trees and such.
Regarding camera quality, I agree, I didn’t expect much for $99, but I was hoping maybe to be surprised.
Guards are fine indoors, outdoors they make the drone less stable in wind, but mainly a lot more likely to get hung in a tree.
Weight
They could have had the Tello record to an SD card for better video instead of stream it. And the stabilization could be done after the fact by an app or computer.
Ur sooooooo incorrect
Taking pictures with cloud cover is the best way to take pictures!!!
Excellent video, thank you!
You keep it..instead use 4k sd card on board..to smoothen the video
I thought it didnt have memory expansion slot...
Could I fly this on the beach or would it get blown away
Thanks for the review x
Thank you!
The camera doesn’t skip if you follow the directions. There’s another video showing how to connect properly to get camera not to jump frames. Your welcome
lovely video brother.
I dont know if you are still responding to the comments on this video but how does this drone perform in heavy winds?
just use samsung galax j2 prime. to avoid frame skip. very smooth video.
Can we change the drone' s camera
the camera on this drone can`t handle sunlight very well, i find that if i`m filming and i fly towards the sun the picture goes dark, and there is no setting you can alter to correct that, i know the problem is software and not hardware because i have cheaper drones with camera`s whos settings can be altered and they work better against sunlight, as for frame jumps i`ve never had this issue but i use a galaxy s9+ with my drone so i have a good signal most of the time.
Can you point the drone downward while flying it? I'd like to use it to look at my flat roof without climbing up there.
No you can't but I have a flat roof and if you fly it parallel to the roof you can see it well!
great review
Great info... answered the questions I had about the video quality. How good is this drone at higher altitudes? Say, something like 3 or 4 times what you show here?
It doesn’t have a great reach, it can get about 30-50 meters away at most. So I’d say 30-50 meters straight up would be your limit.
Do they let you crash it into trees then return it?
Be prepared to go through a lot of propellers? Well what do you expect if you take the guards off, a little drone like this should have the guards on
Are you sure the skipping isnt from fps on your player?
Hi Eric, since the video is not so great in this drone, are there any budget drone that has good video quality better than DJI Tello Drone?
For it being affordable its a very good drone and camera
I have one and I'd say the camera is really good
both it and mini 2.7 k ..... but it doesnt compare does it :/ ??
Nice video. I think the stuttering effect is caused by the image stabilization. Have you tried swiching it off while recording video?
I have, yes. I know I’ve taken criticism for this video but here’s what I boiled it down to: in areas where there are lots of other Wi-Fi signals, they can tend to cause minor interference, and it’s just enough to affect video quality. If you go out to a remote area where there is no other interference, the video clears up. One possible solution is using a Wi-Fi signal booster to overcome the interference
Maybe 720 acts like an SD but truthfully it's in-between SD and hd at 720
questiom for anyone familiar with this drone...
When in picture mode, does it have a video display ‘ like looking through the camera lens? ‘ .... or is it like taking pictures by point of reference to the drone.
It has a display as it is controlled via your phone or Bluetooth controller, you should be able to see what the drone is seeing.
What else do u expect just for $99..?? I think its already perfect..4 Thats damn cheap and cmon thats Dji dude...thats it! 😁😉
They say it's ryze but ryze had little to do with it. It's mostly DJI with an intel processor. Ryze probably had a hand in it's programming but again it's mostly DJI.
Im mega late, but its lile $80 now and thats AMAZING
yes
Yeah, what do u expect dude.? just try to make believe that it's an impeccable drone and that maybe it's not about mr.ryze tello, but it's actually about you..remember, it comes from a DJI family and therefore it was crafted by the hands of the Gods of Olympus..at least i'm not the only aggrieved party here now who's totally disappointed on mr. Ryze Tello..Lol...
Looks awesome. Thanks for the review. Are there any other drones that perform and handle that well but with better video ?
The DJI Spark is amazing, much better video and handling, however it's also more expensive but you can find used ones for pretty reasonable prices
Sparc is much more expensive. Look at the Dobby for $30 more.
So the camera is fixed? Can't get angled down or straight down photos from above?
heard from another person that there is a firmware update to fix the stuttering video
interesting video, I was looking for a drone just for fun, ie; fishing, etc. what kind of range am I looking at? both up and away? do not want to get too close to water for obvious reasons of course but wanted a birds eye view when me or someone else gets a fish? thank you
How did you connect to the camera?
There are "knock offs" showing up. (I'm not going to promote those brands ) Half the price with some extra features(camera tilt, TX INCLUDED ) They DO NOT have the image stabilization - so that alone might justify the cost diff. Waiting for RYZE to add the camera tilt and maybe try to be a bit more price competitive.
So two years down the line, have they updated the camera or still the same crap?
Suggest some good drones to buy
Most of you probably know this but Walmart is now stocking them in a lot of their stores for the same $99. Of course, you will have to pay local sales tax.
Do you need a license to post a video from the tello
Could you put a go pro 6 on the bottom of it? Would it be able to fly with a go pro on the bottom? What's your opinion?
If you buy this drone i advice to also buy a controller instead of using a phone.
Great video, but I have a question. I'm moving from Sweden to NYC this summer and wonder what the regulations are when filming with this drone? I know that you don't have to get a license because of its weight, but can I fly it wherever I want (except airports)?
New York City has a strict ban on all drones, so I would be careful flying this drone anywhere in New York City, even though it technically is considered a toy drone and doesn’t require a license because of its weight.
@@TechyAgent Okey. But it's ok to fly outside of New York City, like in Bronxville, Yonkers and White Plains?
Excelent video :).. do you think that still is a good moment to buy dji spark or should I wait for a second version of that drone?
I think it’s a good time, yes.
Very interesting video.
Eric which drone do you suggest for decent video for less than 150? I wanted the Tello mostly because of the smaller size.
Hey mate, great little review
Hey mate, great little sun holding 😂
How far away can you be from the drone and it still sends the video and pictures to your phone? (by wifi, right?)
It doesn't feel very smooth when it moves right or left. Thanks for the video.
Has anyone tried lowering the video quality and keeping the bit rate high?
Is it good fr videos??
What cheap drone with very good camera would you recommend?
You can pick up a used DJI Phantom 3 Standard and it’s way better than the Tello.
Techy Agent thanks
Techy Agent what about one of your drones in your videos?
is it equiped with a brushless motor? probably not i guess..
but im hoping! crossfingers ^_^
Unfortunately not
Hi
As a beginner, which drone do you recommend me to use while traveling with my family?
Tello, spark, mavic air or other one?
I have a Tello, for pictures, it's good but spend more money and get a spark etc if you want high quality photo's & videos.
I need an advice, looking for a follow me drone with a good quality camera for around $250-300
I would save a little more money and get a spark😉
My video isn't choppy like that. I fly with a controller. You must have a connection problem.
Jay Drone channel has a frame Skip fix for the DJI Ryze
Cool, I’ll check it out!
