    I am a retired millwright of over 30 years. I bought a stethoscope from snap on within my first year. They are so so useful. Diagnosed many issues without the just replace or break everything down method. Great for really ANY tool box.

      I recently watched a documentary on the huge VW plant in Germany. They used to use stethoscopes to listen to the machinery and the engineers were so in tune with their machines they could hear worn components before they failed most of the time. But nowadays they use a kind of microphone/camera that tracks the exact frequencies of all moving parts. It just sits there like a cctv cam and blinks red when some thing is wrong, you can simply zoom in on the images and it'll highlight the broken part. 300 thousand euros per microphone set up. Imagine having that technology at your finger tips! I bet before I'm dead It'll just be an app on your phone

    Pro tip: when diagnosing a wheel bearing, place your hand on the coil spring and spin the wheel by hand. If it feels gritty you've found your bad bearing.

    I have never diagnosed it with that method. I usually put the transmission in neutral, lift vehicle above the ground, hold on to coil spring with one hand spin the tire with other hand. If I feel some sort of vibration in the coil spring, I would suspect that particular wheel bearing is bad.

    • @one2boost
      @one2boost ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@angelcelis9090 think about it. The coil spring is attached to the strut, which is bolted directly to the hub carrier with the bearing in it. Any vibration from a damaged roller/ball bearing and or race would be felt in the spring. One could easily feel the same vibration in the control arm as well. I chose to mention the coil spring because anyone with a floor jack could easily do this method. One could also use the floor jack and crawl on the ground and grab the control arm and spin the tire. All I can say is try it. If it doesn’t work for you or find an easier method, then do that.

      @larroyo1973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That seems like common sense but I keep reading almost everywhere that because of the differential, if the noise gets louder when turning left & quiets when straight or right, it's the left bearing. If it gets louder turning right & quiets when you straighten it go left, it's the right bearing.

    You can normally tell when going around a bend. If your bearing makes noise going around a right bend, your left bearing is bad. Vice versa also applies. This is because when turning, the weight shifts to the other side of the car.

    • @BK-js1hh
      @BK-js1hh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got that right. It's easiest that way by doing a road test first doing left and right turns. It shows up faster because the weight of the vehicle magnifies the growling sounds on each wheel bearing. Easy pickings.

    I haven’t taken it off and replaced it yet so take this with a pinch of salt, but I think the best way to tell while driving is: pay attention on bends and slopes.
    If you’re going up a hill and it’s louder, it’s at the rear. Down a hill and it’s louder, it’s the front.
    If you’re turning right and it gets louder, it’s on the left. Turn left and it gets louder, it’s on the right.
    Likewise if it’s louder while you’re braking or decelerating, it’s also at the front.
    Whenever the most weight is on the wheel with the bad bearing, you’ll hear it at its loudest.
    For me the sound only shows up beyond 25mph.

    My wheel bearing is making a creaking popping noise. At the beginning of this video, I can hear the same noise, except mine is louder. Probably because of the weight of the truck on it. Similar to a CV joint clicking. I bought the new hub assembly, and as soon as the rain stops here, I will be installing it. Thought I'd share my symptoms in case someone else is experiencing the same problem. 👍

    • @ElectricBillAlbright
      @ElectricBillAlbright 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Update, the wheel bearing hub assembly solved the problem. It was pretty dried up of grease inside the bearings. Will need to get one for the other side soon probably. I thought I was going to need a torx bit socket to remove the caliper bolts 🔩 but it had standard hex bolts like 13 or 15 mm. For some reason, they have a different part number for the driver's side and passenger side. You need the hub with the slotted disc for anti-lock brakes (all-wheel ABS) if your truck has 4 wheel ABS.

    I've done this many times over the years when I used to work on cars. Trying to figure out what wheel bearing to be 100% sure of can be hard otherwise. You want to make sure you did the right one. If you do the wrong one and it's not fixed, not you have to eat that job and do the right one. Now you're losing money. You're also making sure it's ot the CV Axel. Generally th eouter one will make a poppng noise when turning, but the inner one can be harder to figure out if that is the noise. If the brearing is not maing any noise, is could be the axel. If the boot is ripped and it's been throwing grease out of it for a while, that would be a big clue.
    Sounds can really trick you when driving a car trying tohear the noise and you think it's coming from the Right Front and it's the Right Rear. The customer is telling you it is making a noise from someplace but it's someplace else. If it's making any noise at all. The number of times I went out on a test drive and let the customer drive because I couldn't hear what they were talking about, and yet it makes no noise when I'm sitting there and they're driving,.... You can start just ramdomly looking around the car trying to find something.
    But using a Stethoscope on a car is something I did all the time;. I figure this is a normal thing most all Mechanics do. I still do it, but I'ma Mantenance manager for a food factory and so will use one on one of the Insutrial machines to an exhaust vent to head if it's making any noise. If that is the issue or not. Noise does travel and so you check both sides, and make sure you have the right one. There are rare times that both sides are bad, but one is worse than the other.

    Jack up car, grab tire try and wiggle it.
