    Much prefer this version to the quartz one. I liked the look of the quartz (except for the quartz second tick) but this one has smashed it out of the park. Big fan of cathedral hands and the colour of the lume has nailed the old school radium look.

    Really like this one Michael. It looks good and it shows how spot on the early designs were/are.
    It will benefit from a rub of emery on the back to lose the mirror finish. I can see the case probably needing a similar treatment after a few months continuous wear.

      Thanks Clive, I plan to put linier brushing on the back at some point to "mod" the watch to my liking. Its thin enough on the wrist to not get scuffed too much by wear as I will be hard pressed to catch this one on a door handle! (something I do all the time, followed by many expletives )

    I think Baltany have done a great job here of making a modern automatic chock full of 100 year old design notes. The bezel an crown aren't to my taste, but they do work well in bringing that vintage flavour. We'll have to see how reliable that movement is long term (yes, I'm waiting to see it on the bench) but you can't argue at that price.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What impresses me is how well the subsecond is balanced on the dial. Like vintage watches that were designed for that arrangement(no centre seconds movements) and unlike a lot of modern homages from the Big Names where the subsecond is just that bit too small and higher up the dial(centre second movements tweaked to have a subsecond).
    Funny enough I had an original Rolex Oyster(1928 IIRC) back in the early 90's when they were only a couple of hundred quid. Sold it on when there was a "bubble" in interest in early Oysters in the late 90's. One that subsequently popped... IIRC it was 30 or 32mm. I don't mind a small watch but it looked pretty tiny tbh. Mine had a white dial with Breguet style hands. If it had a dial like this I'd have probably hung onto it. 😄 The crown was still screwdown, but I suspect a later replacement.
    Very cool watch this Beltany. Especially at that price. Can't really go wrong. Great review too Sir.👍

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for such a good reply. From what I see on the original Rolex they are in their 1000's now. 36mm is a nice size for this. Plenty of wrist presence but still small enough to look vintage. I love the subdial and its probably why they chose that movement to position it right. Shows some thought was put into its conception which impresses me. I am sure I read in my research the Rolex had a screwdown crown so I am now going to look again as its spiked my interest.

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyRetroWatches At that late 90's peak the very early ones were hitting the five figure mark. They got oddly popular very rapidly and then just as rapidly.. Mad how it can go.
      The Oysters originally had a screwdown crown alright. Other watches had screwdown type crowns before them and waterproof watches went back to the Tavannes "Submarine" in 1917(which was also the first antimagnetic), but Rolex's innovation was to buy in an existing patent on a screw type crown and add a clutch.
      The next problem was how quickly the crown tube wore down with daily winding as materials weren't as good back then, so taking a leaf from Harwood who'd invented the first automatic wristwatch, they came up with their own but with a 360 degree rotor, so you didn't have to unscrew to wind it every day. They're the so called Bubbleback Oysters because the back bulged out to make room for the auto bits and bobs.
      Funny enough and contrary to their image in many folk's minds, Rolex are one of the least innovative of the Swiss brands, but the Oyster Bubbleback was a true innovation, mainly by cleverly putting existing ideas together and realising a market existed for it. The fluted bezel on watches like their Datejust today are a nod to the fluted front that screwed the original Oyster crystals in, as are their fluted casebacks.

    I think the case of the Baltany is very nice, but I can't get along with the rest. We are all different, otherwise we'd only have one perfect watch, (a Speedmaster!😸).
    I certainly can see how well made it is and why people would love it. I'd prefer a sixties/seventies Rolex style. Also, It is a tough task to authentically reproduce a face that would have been hand finished and now aged, the patina on a 100 year old watch can be the most delightful thing about it. You can't help but make a tribute to a 1920s watch look modern, even if you try hard. Something is always off.. Or not off, too perfect maybe?
    169!!! WOW. Well, that really changes my mind.. I was expecting between 600-800, even though I'd never heard of the brand.. I'll have to have a look at their other styles. The white dial is also much nicer to me too.

      @MyRetroWatches  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, the into was a bit of fun and Struss just seemed to fit well with the timing ! as for investigation not yet. It still shows good timing just a weird beat positional error. It could be a bit of gravity playing a part. Had the rate changed in the opposite direction this would be much more concerning. Beat just means in basic terms that the tick is slightly longer than the tock or via versa.

    I guess I either got unlucky with this one or their quality control isn't as good as it should be: The watch I received looked great but the time setting did not work reliably. Something was loose in how the crown connected with the time setting position, which made the watch useless as I could not set the time. Manual winding worked fine but not the time setting (second position). To their credit I have to admit that they have been responsive and offered to reimburse me for the cost of shipping the defective watch back to them, which I did. Now I am still waiting for them to get back to me on when they're receiving the watch and sending a replacement. I have bought quite a few watches both preowned and new and have NEVER had a watch arrive DOA like this. Your mileage may vary (and hopefully will!)

      Sorry to hear this. I can’t speak for Baltany but they do seem more considerate when I have been dealing with them.
      I would have been interested to know what was wrong in the keyless works as ultimately that issue would lie with the manufacturer rather than them but granted receiving something that’s not right is very disappointing.
      I hope they come back to you soon. Think they will if they have gone as far as they have. Might take some time getting back to them no doubt

      I finally received the replacement watch from them about 2 full months after first making the purchase. It did not help that the Chinese New Year was in the middle. The replacement looks like it won’t have the same issue. I might have been unlucky but the whole thing cooled me down on Aliexpress watches. The prices are amazing but the QC is sub par. Make me wonder how long the watch will last.

    Would you be willing to take a look at my watch and see if u can get it working again. It's kinda a rare one,and might even be "flashy" enough to do a video on. I bought a Casio TGW-10 tri graph. Nothing APPEARS to indicate battery leakage but I also don't feel comfortable enough taking apart the module "sandwich"(I don't know what else to call it)as I am new to "tinkering" on watches. One of the little nubs the battery hold down looks like it may have been broken during a battery change and I'm honestly not sure what size battery even goes in. My plan was to do the polishing of the dial and proudly wear it but now I'm holding off the effort till I know if it will run again.

      Bad guts? You mean the movement? Are you talking from experience or just because it’s Sea-Gull.
      The way I see it is they are working to a budget given how cheap the watch is, they require a thin movement with a sub second function. I’d guess that requirement it’s more limiting. Perhaps Miyota might have a movement but I’d have to check their catalog

      I own multiple vintage Omega, Seikos and some Russian watches and I really see no problem when Chinese manufacturers make vintage inspired homage watches. We are talking about watches from the 20s-30s with this Baltany, they are basically not obtainable now and western manufacturers don't revisit these designs. I think it is great that the Chinese keep these designs alive, they look incredible. Also Chinese watches came a long way over the last 10-20 years. They have some 150-300€ watches that rival my new Seikos or Microbrands in quality that cost twice as much.
