A lot of critics gave this movie a bad review saying it was unrealistic or whatever. They don't get it. This was a feel good, rompin Space adventure that had action, comedy, romance, drama. It was brilliant and it made us laugh and cry, and despite the criticisms I think the science was above average for this kind of film. It's not a fricken documentary. It's a work of art. @@920WASHBURN Not always. but usually I ignore the critics, and go for the peoples choice. But this one has fallen as low as 6 on the IMDB ratings, it is rising as the years go by and people appreciate it more and more. But it is still less than 7. Originally there was a bizarre criticism of the "science" used in the film and it was ridiculed and was given low ratings. I never understood it and I have defended the film from Day 1. Show me any space film and I'll show you artistic license. I have no idea how a film that was this fun to watch, and struck a home run on entertainment was not at the very least between 7 and 8. And this IS a Peoples audience score. Just a bizarre thing that so many people just hated this film. I loved it from my first viewing to my last, and probably have watched it once every year or two since it came out. I believe I personally gave it an 8. Bisscute is correct, it IS partially a comedy. It is also a summer action blockbuster, also a romance, also had many dramatic moments. How can you judge this as a 6 on your scale of "scientific accuracy"? And I don't know where this viral criticism came from anyway, because Yeah, we don't have secret shuttles most likely, but we COULD. I mean the science wasn't that bad. I am a SCIENCE guy, and I was never bothered watching it. Other than the fact that I doubt we would really be able to do what they did, I thought the science was well done.

At some point in the last year we successfully launched a rocket into a nearby asteroid to see if we could divert its path. I saw it happen live here on TH-cam. Two asteroid impact movies came out at about the same time. Armageddon and Deep Impact. I almost didn't watch Armageddon because I saw Deep Impact and absolutely loathed it.
Armageddon is a disaster movie made for Americans, imo. Unlike Deep Impact, it embraces the core of the culture in which I grew up; we respected blue-collar, hands-on men more than theoretical "experts" who never got dirt under their fingernails.
Note that the Russian Cosmonaut also fits into this. Look at how he was presented compared to the spit-and-polish American "expert" astronauts; and he had to save their butts repeatedly.
I'm not saying that makes the movie realistic. I'm saying it makes it a movie "flyover country" Americans can relate to and embrace. It's like Lord of the Rings; who saved middle earth? A gardener. An ordinary, don't want no glory, don't want no fame, don't want no riches... gardener.
And I'm not saying non-Americans can't like it or embrace it for those qualities. IMO, it's those qualities that many people around the world actually (if secretly) _admire_ about American culture. But for me, it brings back the old days from when I was young and Reagan was in the White House and told us ordinary, blue-collar, flyover country rednecks that he wasn't going to save the country... he was going to get gov't out of the way so WE could save the country. Just like Truman got the experts out of the way so the blue collar roughnecks could save the world.
As I said, maybe not realistic, but very, very wholesome.

That is how the Air Force pays tribute to those they lost after a successful mission. It was originally called the 'Missing Man Formation', which I recently heard they would rename it to the 'Missing Warrior Formation', since we now have woman that fly in combat along side the men.

The sad reality is that there are a limited number of potential solutions for dealing with this situation that involve technology that we don't possess. We could choose to invest in developing these solutions, but no-one wants to pay for it. We have other priorities like stupid wars, future Mars landings and plenty of other ways governments waste money. Unfortunately it would take significant global co-operation. If this situation actually arose, we simply wouldn't have the technology, time and resources to save ourselves. It therefore seems like one of the most logical things to be planning for. I gather deflecting these objects is generally regarded as the best option but there is a lot to consider, including the composition of the asteroid or comet involved.

This is one of my favorite space sci-fi films. The emotions & feelings such as the tension, unease, hope, love, sacrifice etc were well played out by the actors. But of course on the realistic/accurate aspect, it doesn't come out the best. This was meant to be an entertaining space save the world film. The song "I don't wanna miss a thing" is a fcking beautiful song, still one of my favorites till this day. Biss, another space movie that u should react to is Deep Impact, also released in 1998. It's got a very similar plot (asteroid hitting earth causing global extinction). Deep Impact also focuses on more characters in multiple perspectives. Just FYI Biss, DEFCON stands for Defense Readiness Condition, it is a term used by the US government to determine and set the state of readiness and preparedness of its military according to existing threats or possible existing threats (war, terrorist attack etc). There are 5 levels, DEFCON 5 (lowest state of readiness) to DEFCON 1 (highest state of readiness, major threat occurring). The lowest DEFCON level ever activated was level 2 (during 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and the 1991 Gulf War).

This movie is a romp. Lots of explosions. Fun characters, that the actors appeared to enjoy playing. Ridiculous situations and even more ridiculous solutions. Contrived coincidences.
And total verisimilitude meltdown. I couldn't sustain my willing suspension of disbelief.
I'm a space nerd, so all the awful "science" and space antics continuously broke me out of the movie. I know it was meant to be silly and fun. A lot of that came through to me. But essentially everything they showed was just... no. Completely wrong.
Even though Deep Impact had its own issues, it stuck a little closer to believable. I found that movie a little more interesting. The ending was just as dumb, though.
Since then we've had Apollo 13 and The Martian, which show that fairly realistic portrayals can produce good stories and good movies.
I don't begrudge anyone enjoying this movie. But, I worry for those who think this movie is even slightly realistic. It's not. A lot.

True Story: Ben Affleck asked Michael Bay during the initial reading of the script how come it was supposedly easier to teach drillers to be astronauts than to teach astronauts how to drill. Michael Bay's only answer was to tell Affleck to "shut the f*** up". Yes, this movie is very stupid. NASA plays this movie for trainees & tasks them to find all the scientific errors in it. However, it is at least fun to watch. 😊

To suggest you could train astronauts to drill is as stupid as the idea you could have trained the drillers to fly the shuttle. Each to their own expertise. 2:20 "DEFCON, is that not like a festival?"
    No.
In the US, that term means "Defense Readiness Condition" or just "DEFense CONdition".
It specifically defines how ready we are to launch nuclear weapons at an enemy.
DEFCON 1 COCKED PISTOL Nuclear war is imminent or has already begun Maximum readiness. Immediate response.
DEFCON 2 FAST PACE Next step to nuclear war Armed forces ready to deploy and engage in less than six hours
DEFCON 3 ROUND HOUSE Increase in force readiness above that required for normal readiness Air Force ready to mobilize in 15 minutes
DEFCON 4 DOUBLE TAKE Increased intelligence watch and strengthened security measures Above normal readiness
DEFCON 5 FADE OUT Lowest state of readiness Normal readiness
We spend most of the time at DEFCON 5 and only the president or the secretary of defense can raise that to a lower number which means higher readiness, closer to nuclear war.

  • @USAPatriot-vq9xu
    @USAPatriot-vq9xu ปีที่แล้ว

DEFCON is a U.S. Military term for Defense Readiness Condition. 1 is for Imminent Nuclear War or has already begun, 2 is next level that is war is close but is the next that sometime bad is about to happen, 3 Increase in force readiness about normal level, 4 Increased Intelligence readiness and Increase security measures, 5 lowest state of readiness closest to peace. DEFCON is connect to NORAD- North American Aerospace Defense Command they detect anything in the air and space, like the asteroids because they thought they were under attack.

The Meteor who hit Earth 66 Million Years ago was as they said in the beginning "only" 10 Kilometer in Size, but even that Thing already released kinetic Energie estimated at 72 teratonnes of TNT (1 teratonne is a trillion tonnes = 1,000,000,000,000 tonnes), the impact generated winds in excess of 1,000 kilometers per hour (620 mph) near the blast's center, and produced a transient cavity 100 kilometers wide and 30 kilometers deep that later collapsed.
Now i dont know exactly they measure it, but Texas is 268,596 square miles big, so i dont want to know how bad a Meteorite of that Size will be 🤔

  • @blakewalker84120

Why do you edit parts out, then comment on the part you edit out?
    For example:
At 2:18 we see some US officials in a car talking about zero launches.
    You ask what DEFCON means.
I guess one of those guys said something about DEFCON but I don't know what they said because you didn't SHOW US that part.
At 4:24 Carl says "I want to name her Dottie after my wife" which you left in.
Then you said "I thought he was doing something nice."
    Why?
    Why did you say that?
Because Carl also said "She's a vicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape."
But you cut that part out.
To us, all he said was he was naming it after his wife which is a nice thing, then you said he wasn't nice but didn't SHOW US the part that wasn't nice.
I mean, I love your reactions, but it's weird that you show us YOU reacting to things we cannot SEE because you don't SHOW US those things.
