    Maverick's girlfriend in the first movie was Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood(Kelly McGillis). She was career oriented and headed to the Pentagon when she paused that at the end of "Top Gun" to be with Maverick. Seeing how Maverick was, I don't believe they lasted long as a couple, and she ended up getting promoted and pursued her career. I think bringing back Penny Benjamin(Jennifer Connelly), a character referenced twice in the first film, was the smart thing to do story-wise.

    MACH is speed. Mach 1 is referred to as "The speed of sound" - how fast sound moves. It also creates a wind ripple on the aircraft. Planes have to be specially designed to fly faster. At "hyper speeds", mach 3+, the friction of the air creates tremendous heat making it even harder to fly faster + the engines have a hard time pushing past mach 2.5

    It was not a squirrel on the Darkstar it was a skunk - the logo of the Lockheed Skunk Works. They are the special projects division of Lockheed that developed a number of special planes including the U2 high altitude spy-plane, the SR71 Blackbird, the F22 Raptor and the F35 Lightning. They helped design the Darkstar for this film and did such a good job that the Chinese thought it really existed - at least for a while.

    The Mach number is the speed relative to the speed of sound. Mach 10 is 10 times the speed of sound in air. The actual speed for a particular Mach number can vary since the speed of sound changes depending on factors such as the air temperature and density, but the speed of sound in air is about 343 meters per second at 20 C. At high altitude, the air temperature and density are lower, so the speed of sound will be lower as well.

    Just for fun, the 2 planes dropping bombs on the same target, one to make a hole, the other sending a bomb through the hole was actually done over Iraq by 2 F-14A's. They flew welded wing with the #2 RIO's head less than 3 feet from the #1 F-14's wingtip. when they reached their release points, both lased their target and dropped their 2,000lb GBU's. The lead plane's bomb hit first making a hole then the #2 F-14's bomb hit where the 1st bomb hit, destroying the bunker. I don't know why so many people have issues accepting the fact that Maverick had a history before we see him in Top Gun. Now as it turns out, Penny is mentioned in the first movie, as I have no doubt, that has been pointed out many times already in the comments. But even if she hadn't, bringing in a new character from Maverick's past, shouldn't be so confusing. Everyone always tries to place her in the first movie. Now, if you truly want to know the reason why they didn't cast "Charlie", and this is only my opinion, but the actress Kelley McGillis has not aged well. Next to Tom Cruise, she would look like his mother.....or maybe Grandmother. Again, that is just my personal opinion on the matter. But knowing Hollywood, and the need to have a love interest for Tom Cruise's character, Kelley was not going to work. Jennifer Connelly on the other hand......she most definitely works. And the call back to the brief mentioning of Penny Benjamin in the first movie, was a cool touch.

  • @jonandkristen
    @jonandkristen ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The callsigns (pilot nicknames) are given to them usually during flight school by your peers or instructors. Usually it’s something embarrassing are not flattering. Call signs like Maverick or Ice Man wouldn’t typically be used because they are actually somewhat flattering. Instead, it would be something like Bozo if you are kind of a class clown or Crash for someone who had a close call. It may also be a play off of their names like “Huggy” Huggans or “Cuddles” Caudwell. In many ways it’s like a nickname you would receive from a close group of friends in school that is given as both an insult or picking on them and as a term of endearment. Not all of them are due to a bad quality or an issue that happened but something more about something that stood out about you. Once you have your call sign, it just sticks with you and you do not have the ability to turn it down or change it (for the most part).

By the way Lt Robert "Rat" Willard (Now a retired Admiral)was one of the MIG pilots in the original Top Gun, and yes he's the one who receives the middle finger from Mav.

      The first female pilot in the US Navy to carrier qualify in fighters (f-14s) was call-signed Hulk, or She-hulk since she bench-pressed 200 lbs and stood 5'10. After a TV interview during which she wore noticable makeup she gitvan the added callsign of Revlon. She was also the first first female fighter pilot in the Navy to die in the course of her duty.

    A callsign is given to a pilot usually based on something memorable they did, or are known for. Most of the time, this would likely be something embarrassing. Like 'Stopwatch' for someone who's always running late, for example.

    Call signs are given to the pilots by their commanding officer, but go through a selection process & get approval by their squadron. As you may have noticed, the call signs are never anything complimentary. Iceman: cold personality, Maverick: rule breaker, Bob: so boring they gave up on giving him an actual call sign, etc.

    The reason why Amilia is so surprised "Mavrick" was still a O6 was because there is a time frame an officer must promote to the next rank or its retirement for that said officer. As RADM. Cain pointed out in the beginning, with the amount of time "Mavrick" has been in the navy in real life he would have had to of made at least 2 star if not 3 at the time this movie came out.
    In 1986 "Mavrick" was a LT which would have placed him making Captain at around 1995 roughly if he was a brand new LT at the time the movie took place.

Fifth gen fighter planes are totally capable of pulling random shit like that, it's basically a no-brainer, i.e. something they usually just pull for fun, or for aviation shows.
    It serves no strategic purpose, but looks incredibly cool. :D

    Hi Miss Biss, looking very nice in black!🙂The woman that played the instructor (Kelly McGillis) was 5 years older than Tom Cruise in the first film. Today she is 66 years old, and hasn't aged as well as Tom Cruise. They acknowledge the nostalgia in the first film well without making it dated. I think this film will age better than the orginal film. They did a much better job detailing the mission in this one, so people could follow. The stealing of the enemies aircraft is hilarious!😄Yep, you are right about Hangman the game, Biss. Nice reactions to this very good sequel to the original Top Gun, Bisscute!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
