- In 2023 south suburban property taxes are up just shy of 20% on average, setting a new record. In two towns, Dixmoor and Phoenix, tax bills have more than doubled.

Her comments about people not attending meetings and low voter turnout, in my opinion, is the leading issue.

She is the treasurer. She does NOT set the levy or budgets, that is done by the mayor, school board, etc. She's merely explaining how it works.

I think it looks like a ton of tax sales because more and more people can't pay their tax bill. It's also why IL banned most semi-auto rifles.

So because there are more vacant buildings and homes, we gotta pay higher tax bills? Now even more people are going to leave. I am trying to leave. I wish i knew about these meetings that she is talking about. As someone who is in Park Forest, i have seen businesses leave, high school closed, churches leave, and more mentally ill people on the street. Something needs to be done.
they say they are paying schools with our property tax but they paying state employees pension with that , so maybe we should all start home schooling our kids and see what they will say then , where is our property tax money is going

Very informative, why would you not give her more time to explain housing and community taxation, she was breaking it down extremely well, the news gives more time to a story about the Kardashians than something as important as this, extremely sad.

There are dozens of municipalities, school districts, libraries and first responder pension funds on every tax bill. Who’s got time to call them all and, even if they did, would they get a straight and honest answer? Probably not.

FYI. This is example of legal gentrification at work.. African Americans are legally being stripped of generational wealth. Everyone knows that homeownership assist in being wealth and long term security. Homeowners are more than likely register and vote, renters won’t more than likely because they can/will move from one place to another. I lived in Dolton from( 1978 -1998.)

Someone needs to tax Maria Pappas 90% more on her property taxes and she understands how the residents in the south suburbs feels.
I work for a city government, 50-60% of your property tax bill goes to the school district. So stop telling the police and fire department to figure it out. Tell the school districts to figure it out.
JUDGES ARE PAID IN RETIREMENT $199,000.00 PER YEAR AT A MINIMUM AND AT ONLY 7 YEARS OF SERVICE TO QUALIFY. THE HIGHEST PAID PENSIONS ARE AT $249,000.00 PER YEAR. A JUDGE ONLY HAS TO CONTRIBUTE 7% OF EARNINGS. IF AT 9% CONTRIBUTION THE SPOUSE HAS DEATH BENEFIT RIGHTS OF THE SAME AMOUNT.
Do you notice how much homelessness we have in Cook county do you think it may be correlated to the increases in taxes and the increases in property values from the artificially low interest rate that was in effect for years. It is my belief that our politicians left at artificially low in order to increase property prices to cover their perspective budget at the cost of the public as usual.
So does this apply to the whole state or just cook county?

This is a bunch of redlining b.s. The taxpayers in those suburban areas with no businesses are shopping in neighboring villages, so some of that tax revenue should benefit the areas where the patrons live, not just where the business is located.
