The craziest part is that I don't even think taxes collected from citizens is enough to cover annual necessary funding. Our country runs on debt and monetary policy. Taxes are just to punish us.

The issue is that either the renter or the owner must in some way pay insurance and property taxes if they want a "permanent roof" with utilities like electricity, gas and water. Because of this, many people-at least in California, where I currently reside-are living in tents. No taxes, rent, mortgages, or insurance. The number of people who tell me they live in their car that I meet amazes me. Its crazy out here!
It’s getting wild by the day. The prices of homes are quite ridiculous and Mortgage prices has been skyrocketing on a roll(currently over 7%). Sometimes i wonder if to just invest my spare cash into the stock market and wait for a housing crash or just go ahead to buy a home anyways.
I get such worries too. I'm 50 and retiring early. Already worried of the future and where its headed, especially in terms of financies and how to get by. I'm also considering making my first investment in the stock market, but how can I do so given that the market has been in a mess for the majority of the year?
Tbh, most of the investors pays more attention to the profit aspect forgetting that the market involves ups and down. securing your financial position requires lots of patience and proper education on the market so as to know the right profitable stock to buy and invest in. I made over $260k in profits, from just the Q4 of 2021. Investing in the stock market is most profitable when you understand how the market actually works.

That's why property tax is terrible. You'll never fully own your home. Property tax paynent also only goes up as you get older and land becomes more valuable.

@@keithwisdom1663 It's as high as 2.3% in New Jersey. That means someone who owns a regular house worth $450 000 will have to pay $10 350 a year, or $863 a month, to their local government. That's insane. People pay huge amounts of taxes, you have federal, state and local income taxes, property taxes, sales tax, gas tax, registration tax and a bunch of other taxes. No wonder people are struggling.

That's a low levy for high tax states
Not really it appears to be 15% tax on 20% of the property's value although a very incorrect value on his home.
Based on his prior tax bill and that formula he was being taxed based on a $60,000 house so I expect his corrected tax bill is still going to be substantially higher than before because his home is worth way more than $60,000 now, in fact it was worth double that when he bought it.

That's nothing. Some Chicago counties charge up to 25% property taxes if it falls under commercial property such as the house is used as rental property or as multi-family rental units.

@@francismarion6400 Yeah that is basically what we pay in Missouri but what it looks like on paper is 5% tax on 19% of the property's value which is 1% tax on the actual value of the property.

If it was then big businesses would buy up all the land. (More then they already are.) There would be little downside to simply holding onto it. Making laws preventing this would be hard to create that didn't create various loop holes.

Property tax: cause even when you own your home, you never actually own your home.
You can always declare yourself an independent state, and receive no benefits from the county or city (its similar to native american autonomous regions). That also means its likely all your utilities will get cut, and police officers don't a duty to protect your home (as it is no longer part of the "city"), and you won't get any social benefits related to the city or county as you longer are part of it.
But hey, at least you save on property tax.
I do agree that being able to foreclose on a home from unpaid property tax and arbitrarily changing the assessed value all the time is stupid.

The point is, if there isn't the threat of enforcement then many will not pay no matter how badly you want the potholes in the roads fixed. You advocate for property tax but then you don't want it enforced. Enforcement means taking freedom and property by force. This loops back to my original post. No one ever actually owns their property. You are merely renting it from the government.

They can do with it as they wish and use it to push people out of their property. Property tax should be based on the last sell price, not a false appraised value.
Appraised value is for mortgage lending; Assessed value is for tax authorities.
In my state they charge a real estate excise tax when you sell. And possibly capital gains. On top of property tax. It never ends.

This happened to me years ago. I just bought my home and the city sent me an assessment for 3x the value of what I paid for the home. It was highway robbery. Fortunately the office did not give me the run-around and they sent someone out who gave me a fair assessment of almost exactly what I paid for the home (it was still a little over what I paid, but it was close enough that I was fine with that).
This was a test, not an accident. With the country going the way that it is, everyone will be getting $1M valuations on their homes. They're trying to make you sell your house.

@@infiad1275 likely there were some under assessments, assuming they have a total $ figure they are trying to collect. Over assessments in one area allow under assesments in another area...potentially on properties owned by political donors....or it could have just been a massive mistake.

It took me 6 months of fighting my tax assessments to get it fixed. I appealed and then appealed the appeal. I finally won. Keep fighting for your home.

No company ever admits they made an error. I had to file a BBB report against my power company for overcharging me for a small one bedroom. They must have thought I was living in Gates' mansion but they simply closed it and said, "The bill is correct." For some reason I can't confirm, they later sent correspondence saying that they had identified an error on my meter, the same error they earlier claimed was correct.

Property taxes should be paid one time when you buy the property. If not, you don’t own it. You’re renting it from the county, which is bullshit.
Why would the state do that? They make a lot of money doing this. Why stop? Only way to get rid of this form of theft is to put it on a voting ballot. The problem is too many people are complacent and lazy to make a change.

Imo you pay property taxes when you sell, rent, and buy and it should be significantly more than they are now, but the yearly tax thing is weird to me. If you are considering capital gains taxes when you buy/sell a property then you shouldn’t also be ‘renting’ it from the county. Technically you are renting the land from the county if anything, but that the taxes you pay on a property goes up when the home goes up really hurts people in a way it shouldn’t. Especially when so many rich people /companies get so much out of it when the property tax is such a small % of the value they extract. That being said the taxes usually DO go to help the community a lot more than other taxes. It often funds schools and other things, which imo is wrong because it harms education in cheaper areas.

There has to be a way to tax the lower income less on property than the rich. Property for us isn’t an investment or assets we can make money on by renting, it’s the place we want to live our entire lives on in peace without worrying about being evicted due to our landlord selling our apartment or being at the mercy of ever increasing rents we can’t afford. If we lost the place we are in now, we would have nowhere to go. Our only hope is to fix up my grandmothers property. We can’t lose that too.

The councils are trying in every way possible to make money the eventually pay for the ‘illegal migrant’ crisis the politicians created. And the black communities are paying the price. Even being forced to pay $1800 dollars a year in property taxes for a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom home is ridiculous. You work hard, save money to by your own home and you are forced to pay a yearly tax penalty for doing so. The government taxes your income, taxes your cell phone bill, taxes everything you purchase, taxes you if you have a car and taxes your home and the list goes on and on.
My home in the same area, same ranch style home taxes shot up to 4k from 1800
We can thank the change to Amendment 1 that was voted in a few years ago. The one that said new Union employees can't ever be offered lower pay than was previously offered to union employees and that no union employee will have to pay into their own pension. The state raised property taxes to pay for these union "benefits."

What does your property tax cover? We dont have this but we have rates. Rates cover, provisions like infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, drainage and powerlines and fibre for internet. Sucks, ours has gone up too. We dont pay for water, thats a right, like air to breath, but we pay for drains to carry our artesian water, but.effing WHO or UN said allwater needs treatment we never needed to treat our water!! There was a study from the University of Chicago that showed all across the country, low-cost homes were being overassessed and expensive homes were being under-assessed by tax assessors.
It cites the sources for its claims or else it gets the hose again…

All assessors should be investigated by state investigators every year or two. The cities/counties have incentive to assess highly…
Sounds like someone with connections in the assessor’s office has their eyes on those properties.
I propose a law that states. A homeowner may list the property at any time for sale at the assessed value. If the property doesn't sell for that amount within 6 months the city has to purchase the property for said amount.
This is the type of thing people should protest City Hall.
All I gotta say about this is, "they tried", and got caught, and no one is going to be punished. Pretty sad the world is coming to this.
If the state makes an estimate for a house the owner should have the option to sell to the state. That problem would fix itself very quickly!

I agree.. Due to Californians coming to Bend OR., my friends home he spent $77,000 to build, is now " assessed" at 1.2 million... He might have to move from HIS home now due to sky high property taxes due to Californians moving there and raising the cost of housing......

At 35k per year on a million dollar property, you’ve paid the entire value to the state in 28 years. They’d steal the value of the home before a 30 year mortgage is paid off at this tax rate and you’re still out the interest money. Insane.

I see some people here defending taxes saying it pays for schools, healthcare, police, roads etc. The point is NOT to remove taxes but to reduce it to where you are NOT being taxed so much, it's theft. Defending this insane amount of taxes is like defending a bunch of thieves.

And because of that if you dont have insurance and get in an accident or get ill enough to need a hospital it will ruin you with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. I would rather have a state healthcare thats cheaper per person, and places like Scotland(because they kept theirs seperate from Britain NHS so they didnt have it gutted) have it very well or Finland, or even japan.

Every year, when I receive my property appraisal, I file an appeal. I have learned they use mass appraisals, can rarely justify the value placed on the property, and fail to take into account that true market value.
They saw that 120K Red Corvette in the driveway and said, "We got a live one".

Makes me sick. The Founding Fathers would be ashamed of us for paying these ridiculous taxes. They killed for a lot less. Where I live the roads are horrible, infrastructure is 20 years behind, schools are failing and my property taxes went up $500 last year. Get no services. Have to pay for my own garbage pickup. Fire department sends me letters stating if my house burns down I’ll have to pay $20,000 unless I send them $350 a year. The municipal workers are all driving around in nice new diesel trucks though. All new backhoes and skid loaders sitting in the shop; maybe they could fill some pot holes at the very least.
Chicago media and people are blind. The real story hear is that if the house was worth 1 million, the local gov't can charge you 35k for property tax. Absolutely rediculous!

Property tax is a state issue. The constitution focused pretty squarely on the national government and restricted almost nothing from the state governments. Definitely didn't say they couldn't tax people.
It is state law. This allows a county to fire polices schools roads.

If you study history, you know that the men and women rose up against taxes on tea, whisky and stamps to name a few. Back then there were no taxes on income and property and while that was a much harder time for people to live in, they endured, worked hard and now we find ourselves living in the world today.
Taxation today is fueled by greed and corruption and stealing all of your time and energy so you can live a meager existence. I think that we can do better than that, in fact I KNOW it.

In NY State the assessors literally come into your home and assess your quality of life.

You can call in the tax office and they will readjust for you.
As long as you pay yearly taxes on your home it doesn't belong to you , even after being paid off 100% , there should be a one time tax when you purchase the house and that's it

Mistakes made should be few…not 4,400. When people being these mistakes to the property assessor’s office they should seriously look into it instead of giving people the run around. Crook County!
Exactly. I work in an assessors office in another state.. There is no way 4,400 properties would go out with that kind of an error. W e have data analyst wizards that would have raised the red flag long before the tax notices go out.
