Thanks for the honesty, mine is the 2023 Honda AfricaTwin adv ES manual, 13k on it, I am happy with my bike, barely 500kms on off pavement, my heart was with the 1250GS and its infinite torque, reliability took me to Honda.
The integration of CarPlay works great and is fabulous when you learn the controls. Switching between screens (bike to CarPlay ) is fast and easy to do plus there is the bottom monochrome display that always shows your gear and speed anyway. I’ve added a small CarPlay wireless adapter from Ottocast and now I just leave my phone in my jacket and ride. Can’t live without it now.
@@Hookmeister I used a USB extension cable and it lives in my handlebar bag. I am intending to route the cable under the plastic cover on the tank and stash it under there as a more permanent fixture. Just wanted to test reliability before committing to that. So far it has been perfect for over 2000km of riding.
I’m really wanting electronic suspension aswell for the very reason you just mentioned. Stiff for aggressive street riding and softer for rough trail and dirt roads(I’m not that good off-road) The tires I’ve been using are the Shinko 804/805. They stick like glue on road and very decent off I ride a 2017 AT manual
This will be my next bike, ES without DCT. I might finally be ready to move on from sportbikes, the African Twin seems to check all the boxes for me. Good coverage on the bike in the video, thanks.
Don't hate so much on the DCT off road. I have a '21 AT Adventure Sports ES DCT and take it off road all the time. All it takes is practice which leads to experience. You learn to manage slow speed maneuvers in rough terrain by modulating the rear brake in lieu of a clutch. I have no issues riding with all of my clutch pulling brothers and sisters on challenging terrain here in AZ...
After using a set of Dunlop Trailmax Raid on my 2024 Africa Twin AS ES manual, i bought a Continental TKC 70 Rocks for the rear & i bought i Metzeler Karoo 4 for the front. I will install them before next spring.
@@adventureundone You tried the Trailmax Mission, i tried the Trailmax Raid. The Raid are very good on gravel roads & they are phenomenal on asphalted roads; they are very sticky; you can ride very sportively with them in twisties. But after first 2000 km, the front Raid is very noisy on highway between 110 & 125 km/h. It’s annoying. The rear Raid will last only around 7000 km. Not bad for a knobby tire 50/50, but i wanna try something else… On my previous bike, a Tiger 900 GT, i really loved the Karoo 4 as front tire; perfect 50/50 for me! It’s the reason why i will also try it on my Africa Twin to see if i will still love it. I am still looking for the perfect rear tire for me. It’s the reason why i will try a TKC 70 Rocks at rear. It have good reviews for a 60/40. In Quebec, a lot of adventure riders are mixing different tires; but always with the more aggressive one of the 2 in front.
Ive come to a very similar conclusion about my 24 ATAS as well. As a pure transportation device it’s excellent, but, like many modern Hondas it’s rather uninspiring to ride. I’ll be looking for something different next year, Tiger Sport 800 possibly.
Go for the Scrambler. As functional a bike as it is, it also gives an emotional connection like few other bikes do. Thanks for all of your videos. Your channel is excellent.
I am 6’2” and live in Central Florida and the heat blowing on my legs will be my reason for getting something else next summer. Many don’t seem to share this issue but it’s bad for my location and geometry. Unless I come across something else I’ll probably go back to the lighter and less expensive Transalp. It put off no heat at all and was fun and nimble. I’d likely spend money to get tubeless rims and add cruise control on it. I have the standard 2024 Africa Twin DCT. It’s sharp, love the DCT. Apple CarPlay is a bit finicky but still kind of cool. Love the tubeless rims, and cruise control. I don’t enjoy the extra heat, and won’t be riding it much during the summer because of the heat it puts off. I also own a DRZ 400 which I love.
Yes, you can make a bona fide review of this bike & I get tired of guys getting a loaner for maybe the day or weekend thinking they'll share some pearls of wisdom with us? They can't know too much after 1-2 days if they rode it that much? I'm 5'6" and I think I could handle the height of this one but it's got way more electronic stuff than I'd ever want on a bike. But I still like the way you describe the bike's features so let's go...... peace & GB ALL
I love the Africa Twin. Im in the market for an adventure bike but the AT at roughly 100hp falls short compared to the KTM 1290 at 160hp, the HD Pan America at 160hp and other adventure bikes too. Any thoughts or imput?
I absolutely love my 1290. The selling point for me was its huge 7.9gal tank and all the bells and whistles. That being said, the AT was my next bike choice. I’m sure that when it comes time to choose a new bike, the AT will be it since the newer 1290s are too faulty with their technology. For now, my 2016 KTM 1290 has been solid and I love it.
Toss on a set of the traimax raids. 50/50 tyre and still very respectable on road performance and bloody good off road. TKC 70 yep, good tyre but in the wet? I think they are like riding on wet mud.
@@adventureundone got 8000 kms on mine, about 5,000 miles in americanese look about a bit over 2/5 worn, but I'm not a super hard rider, friend of mine got the equivalent of 11,000 miles out of his on an Africa twin, i do mainly what you would call gravel roads and find they are brilliant. I'm curious to know your thoughts on how the base model with a 21 inch front wheel compares with the Adventure Sports on twisty roads. With the base model can you still ride agressively in the twisties and have fun or does it feel like a big step down from the AS with the 19inch front?
Going up steep dirt roads, the DCT allows the rider to stand up on the pegs and lean forward. The rider can’t don’t this with a manual transmission unless they are expert enough to shift gears while standing. 🤷
@@adventureundone I’m talking about shifting on really steep off road. And whatever your ability level, you will be able to tackle much STEEP uphill terrain with DCT.
