    I would say the most important advantage of text-based docs is version control. For example, in git, we can see the diff between the commits with text-based docs, while non-text docs convert into binary files -"blobs".

  • @maxfriis
    @maxfriis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I wish Luke would have talked about the editing experience by it self. Sure you have all the extensibility stuff, but the main advantage is that you usually work in distraction free software when editing plain text. Word distract you from your writing with all kinds of formatting and feel good stuff while you are actually thinking about what to write.

  • @EuphoricRaccoon
    @EuphoricRaccoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I like to think the UNIX philosophy principle of extensibility as extreme orthogonality (as used to describe programming languages). That would mean that programs following the UNIX extensibility principle will be highly independent of each other in terms of they can do, whilst you being able to combine them to make use of much more complex functionality.

  • @jeroenvw7119

      I think the choice of words was bad here, but I think I get the gist. I've come across hundreds of different youtube channels since I started using and there is nothing like Luke Smith's content and character. I have to admit based on how my beliefs on certain things were challenged/changed and how "deep" his philosophy is, how he is walking the walk, putting to use what he learned with rapidity, well-rounded, etc. that he is the wisest individual I've found online. I do disagree with him on various things but how he comes to conclusions is admirable. The line of thought that is similar is if one is totally lost, has no role-model, etc. there is a fallback lifestyle to follow and this is it - if you were to just emulate a lot of what Luke does your going to be doing pretty good in life. Do question everything and go with your instincts as to what is best for you and the people in your life.

    I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Castilian, is in fact, GNU/Castilian, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Castilian. Castilian is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

    I have a folder I can just put pdf articles into. A script can watch said folder for new files, convert pdfs to text, look up the DOI, get the citation info formatted in bib from a web API, put it in my references file and send me a desktop notification about it. If I wanted to I could auto generate a pdf with all references in a standardized format, sync said pdf across multiple devices, publish it on the web and so on. Learning to use Linux is like learning to cook instead of always ordering takeout.

    If you are thinking about writing your academic papers with vim/latex but don't want to mess around with compiling scripts, check out this awesome software called Kile. It has built-in vim keybindings and an integrated dual view of the latex editing window and the pdf output. When you save your latex file, Kile compiles and updates the pdf view so you see the changes immediately. Additionally, the pdf view scrolls always to the same position where your cursor is in the latex file.

    And you could do even more, if instead of all-text it would be beautiful typed data!
    Then instead of `wc -l`ing the `grep` output you could take `length` of the list it returned. This would easily mitigate many script bugs and allow for even greater flexibility.
    But then we get to the point when we try to replace `bash` with `ghci` and it simply is not suited for this use case. Either way, command line works great!

    Pretty cool trick for interactive find and replace on multiple files using vim and grep:
    `grep -Rl PATTERN | xargs -oL 1 vim -c "%s/PATTERN/REPLACEMENT/gc"`
    This will open a vim instance for every file that contains PATTERN and ask for confirmation for the substitute command. After closing one file, the next opens.
    Also possible without `-L 1`, but then vim opens all files in a single vim instance and you have to use `next` to go to the next file after substituting.

    While valid, and although I agree with it, this is a very weak argument.
    A Unix-style workflow is built on the premise that I, the user, am in charge of managing and transforming my data, which is naturally expressed in the form of text files in various formats (files being persisted objects, as noted in that Plan9 fortune).
    This is not a point of view that can be espoused by someone whose experience of interacting with computers has been one of sequential user actions. In this paradigm, it's my job as the user to push the mouse cursor onto the start menu, and then it's my job to click, and after that I *have* to click on the Excel icon, etc. In this model, the user is leading a call-and-response routine in which they can just about predict what the computer is going to do.
    I contend that we are dealing with about 35 years' worth of damage done by industry vendors who've pushed that confusing model so hard for years.
    I do not think explaining the merits of the Unix way is going to convince anyone who's been stunted by GUIs. However, I would suggest that there is great value in emphasising the similarity between the primacy of data encapsulation into files, and subsequently file processing and file management, and popular simulation video games.

    I'm kind of confused by the example you used with 'Spanish'. In a gui document editor I can just do ctr+f and search for the word spanish, it highlights all of the words for me and it tells me how many cases there are of that word, and all I have to do is just search the word. Idk maybe im just too much of a zoomer to understand why I would use a CLI for document creating/editing; I would just prefer to keep the CL for editing small programs/compiling them.

    So you write in markup language in a text editor instead of using a GUI program, and the advantage of going through all this trouble is that you can run batch operations on the text files. Well, except that .docx and .odt files are also in a markup language format, so you can run the same batch operations on them. 😆

      It's probably a small script to start fzf to find a file and then open it in vim.
      Check his scripts on GitHub and see for yourself.

    Easierly 8:55 . Reassuring that a linguist makes these slip-ups too. Maybe not though, maybe a multilingual person is more likely cause there's more words floating around in brain.

    I only would agree with you on some points (ease of access to text format, ease of access and speed from a common user interface like terminal), but writting a document in a text that finally will have to be formated for user consuption instead of MS Word with long-lived powerfulnstylesheets is just silly. The power of WISWIG is just unbeatable when writting a legal or scientific paper; I don't havento imagine, compile to het the PDF format results. Obviously, like with anything else, it requires the knowledge of the product: shortcut keys in particular. And final product can still be converted very quickly to a pdf. How about spreadsheets and using vim or emacs for that ? Lol 😂

    RAE - Real Academy of the Spanish language states: "To name the common language of Spain and many nations in America (The Continent) and other parts of the world, both "castellano"
    and "español" are correct. The polemic regarding which one is more correct has now been overcome."
    Anyways, good video as usual, Luke.

    text is a real portable format but bring able to search or manipukate it with external tools is not a plus of text files, rather than of tools.
    after all ODF is text (xml) based...
    and compact forms like markdown and Org win against markup languages like HTML and LaTeX because you have less clutter in your file.

    Luke, I appreciate your content. I'm a subscriber that hasn't managed to get through all your videos yet (but I'm trying). I have a question that I don't think you've talked about. In a previous video (may have been a livestream) you were belching and said something to the effect "sorry, I eat my meals in the evening (or afternoon)" and I was curious was there a reason behind that? Do you fast? For health or religious reasons? Just curious and wondered if you'd have a moment to answer when you can. Thanks and Linux-on, boomer :)
