Super impressed that you went down there to understand what happened! Most people just get angry and give up. Says a lot about your character that you wanted to learn from the situation. You'll get the barn where it needs to be one way or another😉💚 (it's a gorgeous building too by the way)

I’m an old farm boy who loves old barns and I have spent a major portion of my professional life helping farmers figure out how to make use of their old barns. After all that, I have reluctantly come to realize that a majority of the space in these barns was intended to store hay for long winters like those in Vermont, Norther Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan. That space is largely not cost effectively utilized. The floor level was used for feed storage and animal housing for horse and cattle. As much as it pains me to say it, perhaps tearing down the barn and salvaging the components to build a building that reall meets the needs of the animals you plan to House and is makes efficient use of you time may be a better alternative.

You need an egg apron so you pick up the eggs and you put them in a pouch under your jacket in the large pockets for eggs so they won’t freeze before you get them in the house. If your interested I will email you a pattern or make one for you.

When you mentioned cutting down trees for the barn it reminded me of another farm/homestead that was recycling old telephone poles... Running them through a mill to get planks and posts/beams. The wood is already cured and shrunk so a better match for the age of the wood of the barn. Although it they are softwood (pine) it may be an issue if the barn is hardwood.

My great grandparents had a glorious 4 story barn that was ... well, wonderful.
When I visited, among other things, my Uncle Hobe showed me how to milk a cow by hand. The ceiling, from the basement floor, was really low.
Cousin Vicky married many years later and her husband (they were both teachers) wanted space for old cars he collected. He started digging out old manure.
    About 8 feet of it.
    Anyhow ...
A few years later a tornado came along, and yes, there went the barn. I still count it a tragedy.
BTW, it was way back in the Manistee National Forest. In winter, Vicky and Bob rode snowmobiles to a garage they rented on Michigan Highway 10 for two cars (maybe 4 miles). Parked the snowmobiles there, then drove cars to work.
I still like to drive back there maybe once a year, and from my car just look at the place and think of all the stories my Grandmother had told me about growing up there.

So it is onward and upward, regroup and forge ahead! The next application process should be the one that gets it done. After the cleanup and a new better understanding of what you need to show and explain should make you feel much better about next year. By all means, patch the roof to preserve and slow the leaking. Looking forward to the progress Morgan.

It was really good of the grant committee folks were will to talk to you and give you some advice. Next year may be your year. I like the idea of preserving the barn and not getting too radical in modernizing it. Patching the main roof leaks is a good interim idea. Someone in the comments did mention not to do too much and have it work against you, might be good advice.

I say keep the barn; it's part of the farm, like the trees, the wildlife and the nematodes. There used to be a small barn on my property in CT. At some point, probably late 1800s when the blacksmithing business closed up, the barn fell into disrepair and collapsed. But the top of the barn, the loft was fine. It stayed that way for years until my husband's grandparents bought the land. They jacked up the barn hay loft, removed all the rest of the barn wood, put the loft up on field stones and left it there. It was used for garden and yard tool storage, tire and car part storage, and yes barn cats. I like having something there that was original to the property; it just feels right. Like our stone walls, people have wanted to buy parts of it- but it's part of the land to me.

The folks at the State *have* to have a scoring plan (so it doesn't look like somebody's brother-in-law didn't get the funding, not that it was even a possibility... kind of a CYA). The fact that you were soooo close is a great piece of info to have. But don't do too much on the barn... might want to run it by the State if you haven't already; sometimes making too much in the way of certain fixes/improvements will also knock you out of the running. I think the ducks could produce income that you could put toward the repairs. I've seen others selling hatching eggs and supplying eggs to restaurants, looks like you need to embrace them and get 40-50 going, get an incubator, sell fertilized eggs and use that toward repairs. I know maintaining an old barn is tough, I have one on the family farm and they run down fast, especially when I have a newer barn with a concrete floor to use and I ignore it. I like the idea of using your old trees, hopefully someone will offer the services of a portable mill to cut the boards. I think you should keep it as original as possible, a dirt floor is ok for farm implements, etc. I parked my car in a barn like that for years.

I am kinda surprised how he asked for money. Maybe it is because plp offered. But he already shared the property is paid for and they having savings. It just seems kinda a lot. It isn't like it is a historical barn. Trust me these type of barns are over New England. Well at least he did not sugar coat it. You donate to their barn restoration he improves HIS wealth. At least he was honest. There are just so many charities that need help for veterans, animals and children. Charities that need food. You knew what you had when you purchased the land. Not to mention overwhelming help with Lil Vet Bills. Idk I guess I could say he didnt lie.

Perhaps you would have had more luck with the grant if you had resident Bats or a Barn Owl? You could put in place Bat Boxes and Barn Owl Boxes which may get occupied for future application?
I think you should clear part of your barn, as a classroom and start running course on what you do - here is an example of No Dig Courses: www.charlesdowding.co.uk/courses/

wait........, so you were asking for money for a barn you don't even have clear plans for??? Than basically wanted a glorified Garage? Ya, i can see why you TRULY didn't get it. There are people who REALLY TRULY use their barns for their animals who can use that money.

Why in the heck would tax money be used on YOUR barn? You bought into it so you should fix it 100% on your nickel. I don't get that kind of thinking

I’m not trying to be mean but why should all the tax payers in your state pay for repairs on your barn? Lets take some of your money and repair some other persons barn. Is that fair? No

I understand where you’re coming from and I think it would be much better for a lot of people who really love the Golds and what they are doing to donate and be able to fund the restoration of the barn instead of taxpayers to do it. However, it probably will take more money than we are able or willing to come up with. Also, the state funds these projects, I assume, for the state historical aspect because they deem these old buildings worth saving and hate for all the history to be lost forever. Finally, isn’t Vermont overwhelmingly a liberal state? Bernie Sanders and all. The majority of people there probably think the taxpayers should fund a lot of things.

Cynthia Fisher what? If someone wants to donate towards something like this thats great!! But how much will your check be for this project????? Put you money where your mouth is.
But stealing money from tax payers to remodel a structure on private property is theft.

@Gardening in Gnome town Our State has established a fund to provide matching finds in order to help preserve historic barns. The funds are disbursed fairly through a transparent process. I'm happy to pay a minuscule portion of my taxes to support this program. If we value a landscape dotted with rolling pastures and historic barns, we need to collectively help support it.

Gold Shaw Farm that’s all well and good. We had to pay for all of our capital improvement on our ranch ourselves and I’m opposed to my tax dollars being use to improve someone’s private property. If it has that great of a historical value the state should claim is under eminent domain and repair it then open it to the public. In my mind that would be the only way spending tax dollars would be warranted.
Love you brother let’s just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Right, when my grandparents didn't have money to fix their farm they didn't go begging for money they sold things or rode it out until they could pay for the things they needed, I am honestly tired of seeing all the beggars on social media with go fund me this and that and everyone always expecting something for nothing. I'll be on the agree to disagree bandwagon because I've never begged for anything in my life, if I can't afford it then it's not mine to begin with.

Very poor taste to ask for money from the people who watch your channel....you seem like a nice guy too. Never understand some of these You Tubers. Don't buy a property that you can't afford to fix. If you can afford to fix it then don't have the balls to ask for "help" in the physical or monetary sense. There are loads of charities or foundations that could use money. To ask for money when it will only benefit YOU is appalling. It's as bad as some of these farms on TH-cam where the man that OWNS the damn thing will have fans come to the farm and "volunteer" to do chores around the farm. They get to see their TH-cam idol if you will, and the TH-camr gets free labour. Talk about having your cake and eating it too 🎂.
