  • Our Vermont farm has a long history of agriculture. Sit back as I tell you the story of our farm in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.
About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

From business oriented farms to Family operated farms to Duck Boi. That farm has had a unique and rich history. Give it a decade and it will be a historical landmark of Vermont if it already isnt. If locals already know the "shaw farm" it wont be too long until that orchid farm takes off and your farm will appeal to many more.
I salute and wish you the best Duck Boi. May that Orchid field prosper and long live the Quacken.

Tip about fruit trees from a retired organic farmer.
If you want the trees to thrive, it important to keep weeds and grass away around the trees, especially the first years, roots must spread but when there are roots from grass and weeds they spread slow and your tree wont be happy.
The bigger the circle free of weeds the better.
I've many times seen new comers make this mistake. After 5 years their trees are still small.

I have friends who have "retired" at 60 and took on 2.5 acres and are now 5 years later grow their own fruit and veg and have chickens, and cope really well with the day to day stuff, and leave the heavy works and building maintenance for others. :)
Even me as a 40 year old amputee, copes well with the starter allotment plots I have, and am self sustaining in vegetables and some fruit 9 months of the year and hoping in 2020 to move onto a small farm to continue the adventure.

I know what you mean, Jack. I'm sure we could find a way to accommodate our disabilities (balance problems and hip dysplasia). Our main hindrance is the fact that as soon as we have any income and/or assets that isn't SSDI or long-term disability insurance, creditors will come knocking. Right now, we're uncollectable. That changes if we ever acquire any assets.
Before anyone asks, the debts I'm referencing are medical debts. Fun times, right? Only in America...

    • @SadisticSenpai61
      @SadisticSenpai61 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mima4392 We don't have children and we aren't going to have children. The only way we could/would have kids is if we adopt - which requires you to have a degree of financial stability and a certain level of income that we will most likely never have.
Unless ofc, we remain unmarried and I adopt as a single parent based entirely on my (currently nonexistent) income. So basically, that's not an option either - even with subsidized adoption. And if my partner were to apply to adopt as a single parent based on his income, that's $1700 a month. It's barely enough for us to live on, let alone adding a kid to the mix.
One of the main reasons we aren't married is because our healthcare costs would increase exponentially if we did. The way the system is set up in the US, poor ppl are heavily incentivized financially to not marry - *especially* if one of them has major or chronic medical issues.

Morgan, as I already wrote in another comment, I have similar career background and we are about the same age. I am absolutely fascinated by your channel both from professional and personal point of view (yes I can read between the lines). But also, I live in Europe on the Balkans, a place of millennial history and I am used to see monuments, buildings and whatever that is hundreds or thousands of years old. So, I really respect everything that you are doing, I really respect your attitude towards the farm and its past. I am also a city grown-up person and I have always dreamed to have a house in the village, I have had a dog all my life, so I really enjoy your videos with all the animals you keep in this farm. It is a complete joy to see their behaviour and how they grow up. Keep doing whatever you are doing, it is great!

I have been watching your newer videos for a few months now and just came across this one. I really enjoyed it because I have wondered how you came to be involved in all this. I think it's wonderful that you are pursuing your dream. You and your wife are actually doing what all my friends back in the 1970's talked about wanting to do but had absolutely no idea where to begin. Plus, we were too lazy and usually too stoned to actually try to figure out a game plan. I hope your videos inspire others to actually take the leap and reach for their dreams. You don't lie about how much work is involved but you show that the rewards are worth it. I hope Gold Shaw Farm is a glorious success.

I'm struck by how far you've come, but also by how true you still are to this original vision! I'm not a farmer, but my step-father and father-in-law both were. So I feel a bit confident in saying that while your "how" might be a bit different, I see that same passion in you that I grew up with from them. I really love your videos and watch them all the time. I'm a grown and bred city girl, but my ancestry is farmer and it's just in my blood.

Morgan, That was so honest and real. Remember! Flick an acorn in a field.... 🌳. The objective will drag you along. The thing with livestock is get 1, get 3, get 7, get 15, get 45....it's a farm. Well trees. They just keep growing. We got our allotment last October and boy was it wild. We cleared some and planted optimistically. Tonight's potatoes were off that space. Gold plated 🙂 but so good to eat. It has been really hot and wet here and some of what we cleared has reverted. Oh! But such butterflies 😀. We will inch more control every year. But not too much. As will you proceed in your direction and become viable for a whole host of reasons I can see, but won't say. Of the trees we planted last November, maidens, so larger than yours, only one has failed. Which, is just an opportunity to get another one! Keep on pressing. Thanks for your uplifting attitude. Regards Stephen.

Keep following your dream... love the info you put out. If I was 20 or 30 years younger I would do the same. I'm now 70 so I just love your videos.

OOPS! I accidentally deleted my comment about how AMAZING Stefan Sobkowiak's channel is. We have learned so much from him. It is good to hear that you use his work as a pattern for what you are doing. It will be fun and interesting to see how your orchard progresses!!! :)

I am catching up to current happenings on Shaw Farm. I admire you & Toby. As the brains of the Whole Operation, Morgan is Top Dog! My dream is to some day get a duck that Got to Live on Shaw Farm! I say that believing in my heart that Morgan will NOT become a heartless duck killer. Keep on my friend.
