Hemp, Geese and a Building a Vermont Farm

  • The road of life is paved with squirrels that couldn’t make a decision. I’m trying to figure out what new thing I want to add to our farm business in 2019 and I'm trying to make plans to raise geese for meat and grow hemp for CBD oil. And I’m trying to figure all of this out in the middle of a blizzard. Fun times in VLOG format!
About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I lived in northern Idaho a few years I remember the snow very well. I loved it so beautiful! Extra feeding and watering when below zero and never ending snow clean up. I cleaned the neighbor's driveway in exchange for the best smoked chickens ever!! And cinnamon rolls :) We no longer live where it snows :( but love our farm. We just finished rebuilding a small ranch house in a farming community. Couldn't figure out why the walls had soo many chicken feathers. A old timer stopped one day thanking us for purchasing and repairing the little farm with 2 houses. He then disclosed that house was a chicken coop and during the depression was converted into a house. That explained soo much we found during renovations. We had no experience with construction but we jumped in and basically learn as we go not afraid to ask for help when needed.. no regrets! A lot of work but worth it and nice to have income since we now have a tenant. Starting the second house next month :) we are living in it currently since it was in decent shape and I was tired of having a new baby and living in a camp trailer. Big farm changes ahead of schedule so getting it done since we are jumping into a bigger farm down the road. I understand i feel like a squirrel myself lol the geese idea is awesome good luck! I use CBDs in pill form for pain since medications make me very sick. I won't go into it but i have a genetic defect in my back. I live in pain every day 6 years ago started looking for a more natural approach to managing my pain. I also take a bunch of herbs, etc... good luck with your adventure! Homestead, farm,etc... it's work but it's so much better then being stuck in a office. I don't miss working retail or with the vet! My husband works full time still but we are transitioning into a sustainable life style we are year 3 into a 5 year plan. My income now is from our cattle program we have been building for 6 years. For us hay and cattle are the easiest that's what we are setup for. So glad I found your channel it's exciting to watch others on their journey.

I know this is an older video, but I think it is a great idea to grow hemp, it is very profitable. In some of your other videos about tractors, I would agree big jobs on the farm may require big equipment, but for everyday use, I would suggest looking into BCS tractors. They are two wheel tractors with great amount of attachments, the upfront cost, would be much less than buying a tractor, such as John Deere, or International, or other large tractor manufacturer. Another option would be look for attachments for atv. Hope this helps.

We were definitely hit hard in Upstate NY. You’ll see it in the video we post later today. 🤣 Chris also likes to do snow cleanup at least a few times throughout a storm, or else it’s just a nightmare after all of the snow. Pretty cold in NEK today and wind is still blowing. I too love the snow and how quiet it gets. Funny you said you would dream of a farm in your office in DC. My son grew up in VT and upstate NY and couldn't wait to get to the city! He lived in NYC and now works in DC and loves it! I could not live down there - I'm a country girl. I'd rather haul firewood and shovel snow any day to driving in city traffic!
Good luck w/ your plans. I think hemp production is really going to take off across the country - getting in early on is good.
Love your cedar swamp! Good thinking spot. Stay warm - good day to work on spare room!

I am kinda in the same boat, actually I think most of us are with farm projects and home projects and trying to focus all our energy on the vision of our farm or homestead. Thinking back 2018 went by so quickly and I did not accomplish what I wanted to accomplish. This winter brought to light new obstacles that I need to take care of when it warms up. Prioritize prioritize prioritize. This year I am going to focus on our house more than the farm. It is too drafty with the single digit and teen temps, so new insulation on all outer walls and windows and doors will be removed, squared up and installed so there is no more drafts! Hoping to include a wood furnace. Thanks for sharing Morgan.

You made some great points in this one. We're trying to make some big decisions about our future - hopefully full time RVing for a bit then settling down in VT with a homestead/small farm business. I really enjoy watching your farm grow and seeing all the work and passion you pour into it.
Your videos really inspire me to give a go at the whole TH-cam thing. I'd like to share our story with friends and family. Plus, I totally want to do my own music like you do. I love the "Layla" coda in this one. What sort of music setup do you use? I've always wanted to do similar covers of a certain big VT jam band.
Great job once again!! Keep them coming!

This video has mentally prepared me for the first snow we are about to get here in Chicago. While I am not sure if it will accumulate, I needed to see someone having fun in the snow.
It takes me a minimum of 3 hours for any snowfall 3" or more to shovel my driveway, turnabout and both porches (back porch I use, front porch mailman uses)
Maybe if I had a Pablo cat to plow through it like the badass he is, it would be even more enjoyable.
    Keep doing what you do!

Nice one. Totally with you on the goose grazing system - we've had many years of feeding cooks/ducks etc on grain and always thinking up ideas to reduce/replace off farm inputs. So will be interested to follow you if you do get the geese as this is something we are considering here. And yup, with farming, especially ecological/permaculture design comes the options...the many plausible ideas that can certainly cause analysis paralysis! I've defo found it's best to jump in and try it than fretting and thinking too hard at least.

One thing I always consider in making choices is that local, county and state laws DO NOT supersede federal laws. The feds won't just lock you up close to home. They will ship you all the way across country to make it difficult to see friends and family. They will stop all your phone calls or mail if they want as well. There isn't a damn thing to do about it. I've known a few that went to federal prison for taxes, drugs or other federal laws. You never want to chance going against them.

Hi Shaws been a while, just got a new comp. Interesting choice hemp,it can bring around 1K a plant but that's for medical grade. By that time I hope you got plans for the hired hand or couple a hubby wife team could really turn it for you then. Cannabis cultivation is a REAL cash crop but its pretty labor intensive and that's intense X 3 if you go cert organic. I am behind you just be advised weed is a serious crop, spider mites, fungus, mold all deal breakers at the dispensary. practically a full time job in and of itself. you could hire me I worked my dads ranch and nine years for Ringling bros lol. But all in all stand tall and walk proud doing your best.

This was great! I love the snow too! Sadly, we’ve only gotten a teeny bit here in SW Idaho this winter. It was 54 degrees here yesterday, yikes! My daffodils are coming up. Not good.
About the hemp...I hope that’s a great plan for you. I’ve done no research on it, but I have heard of some marijuana growers who are switching to growing hemp because the market is falling out of the weed market with it being legalized in so many places. I just wonder if there will be too many people growing it in the near future? I don’t know, I’m sure you are checking everything out and I wish you well! I really enjoy your content!

You might want to try to sell a few frozen processed Geese first, before you jump in full bore. Eggs, you will never break even on them. Even in the best of times Small farms have been sustained from outside income. The corporations have taken over the for profit farming. I like your Videos. I have a Small family farm also, in P.A. Don't give up. ever. I have been doing this for years and i will die trying also.

The final tally was 22". The initial clearing went fine, but because the snow is so powder and it has been so windy. I'm having to reclear daily because of the drifts. But hey, it's good exercise!

I’ve found that our ducks have a range of 6:45 to 8. And different ducks lay on different days. It’s tricky to prevent all of them from freezing on really cold days.

Geese are much different than ducks in needs and personality. Research, try a few, not fifty 😀. The balance of life is difficult. At least you are able to see it pile up and reflect on where you need to add/ subtract. Not everyone is good at that.

I'm rather a Johnny Come Lately in commenting. Do your farm planning and farm work as you do with the snow . A little at a time rather than all in one big bite. Especially when you are basically doing it by yourself. Remember , life is not a sprint ! It's more of a marathon. As for a tractor. You may not "need " one but a tractor does come in handy for doing some of the heavy work.
You probably do not need one of those $150,000.00 models but perhaps a tractor like Al's would come in handy. In Vermont or N.H. you may be able to find a decent used tractor.

I love geese but they are loud! Excellent guardian animals, though. They need a lot of protein in the winter -- when they graze, they are getting lots of protein, but hay doesn't provide enough so you have to supplement.

    • @littlewhitedory1

@@GoldShawFarm that's the way to do it. Even the ducks could be processed in the fall giving you a quieter winter. If you want pet ducks then it's going to be the grind all winter hauling water and dealing with the weather. As far as goose sales, I'd look into that in your market area to be sure anyone would want a goose for food. My thinking is that if goose was a good option to turkey or chicken that there wouldn't be Canada geese all over the place! I've heard of municipalities holding a Canada Goose season due to the volume of geese over grazing and becoming a sanitary and general public nuisance. The example I'm aware of claimed that any bird shot could be brought to a local soup kitchen. As it wasn't something people were willing to try the soup kitchen ended up having to pay to get rid of the over supply of the geese. I'm not suggesting that the bird that you'd raise is going to be the same but it strikes be as potentially not being worth the effort. I'm pretty sure you are doing the chicken (make that goose) math to see if it would work. I'd be very curious to know what price you'd use for your calculations? Good luck with all your ideas and dreams for your farm. And remember.....it's free to dream!
