- One of the action-packed classics from the "Super Scaler" era of Sega arcade games! While the home conversions may have been played by more gamers, this review takes a look at the arcade cabinet original.

I remember playing that 360 degree moving cabinet. Used to spin around in it. It's one of the best memories of my childhood.
Yes, my childhood sucked.
anjetto1 Are you kidding, that sounds like an awesome childhood memory to me! I always wanted to try one but never got to
+anjetto1 i used to hammer the arcade deluxe cabinet you sat in , in timezone here in the 90s
Was this the game in Terminator 2 in the scene where John and his friend are at the arcade and the T1000 is looking for him?
Yes, but not a full 360 spinner
This is definitely one of the best arcade games ever ! I was lucky enough to live by an arcade with the sit down version. It was a blast !
Me 2! It was freaking unbelievable. I played a couple of times back in 96 in the All Star's Cafe in Cancún Mex :D
Just played the sit down version at an arcade today. I was surprised such an old game could be like this.
Reviewing RPGs is a bit of a hassle, and takes far longer than a week to prepare for and review. So they're few and far between. But I'll keep that one in mind, as it's one of the best of its genre that I've come across.
And yeah, I wouldn't mind doing another video with ADG whenever he comes back from his hiatus. We shall see!
Always awesome to hear of new viewers :D Glad you're enjoying, and I hope you continue to!
Currently I use a Blue Snowball USB mic with a double pop filter attached. Just used a Logitech headset in the past.
After Burner: Climax was a great game too
Afterburner is one of the few arcade game I've managed to play through. And even then it was in an amusement park, where arcade games were free to play.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I did another one on Sega's Turbo Outrun prior to this one, which is quite similar if you liked this one :)
first time i ever saw this in an arcade was mind blowing, it was the one you sat in and rolled about, outrun and space harrier also bring back fond memories :)
I don't have two channels, there's only this one: phreakindee. And it has everything I've posted in one place.
I do have separate shows on the channel: LGR and LGR Plays. You can ignore them if you want, they're just there because if my partnership. It allows people to subscribe to different parts of my channel. Some people just want to see reviews, some people just want to see plays, so if they want they can subscribe separately.
I also have playlists, but I shouldn't have to explain those :)
Oh my god, i played this so much at the arcade around here as a kid! I havent thought about this game in years now, thanks so much for reminding me of this awesome thing!
this's the game was played in Terminator 2 right?
kai lee Just as JC first encounters the T1000
And in Suburban Comando.
Love your videos, they are so relaxing and you have a good taste in games too! :)
This is the earliest can remember playing as a kid. My dad had it on his Sega Master System and I used to jump on it the second he got done playing Master of Darkness. Such good memories!!
Dude you have become one of my favorite reviewers since your retrospect of Duke Nukem. Keep up the good work man.
i really love your reviews, man,i also love your duke nukem voice, best i have ever seen :) keep up reviewing these classic dos games :D
It was at a local arcade, though the machine was for sale! Sadly, I have no space for arcade cabinets in my current place.
This is the first I've heard of it, so no, I didn't have any plans on getting it when you posted this comment. However, now that I know of it I'll check it out. Though I have the original Space Colony boxed still, which I planned on reviewing a while back but never got around to it.
We had the full motion cabinet within bike distance when I was a kid. There never was spare change around my childhood house thanks to that game.
i remember beating this game at tilft in the cab i missss these :)
Thank you for your amazing videos
The arcade at Smiley's Flea Market in North Carolina. Not sure if it's still there or not, this was filmed about a year ago. There is a video on my channel showing it, titled "25 Cent Flea Market Arcade"
I sadly never had the opportunity to play AfterBurner down here in Aus but I remember it well in Terminator 2
so, this is the game hulk hogan played on suburban commando
I review old games and hardware every single weekend! Sims things are actually a small percentage of my content :)
It must have.been amazing to have that 3D sense of speed and excellent digital instrumentsamples and sfx back in the days of Topgun. The second bgm is my favourite, gives me goosebumps. That 360 roll and forcefeedback stick is amazing.
As a child I had alot of fun shooting missiles with so much trailing smoke.
Awesome review! That simulator was my favorite in the arcades when I was just a little boy :-) Man, did I spent much of my parents guilders in that thing.
I love these old Arcade reviews, I dunno why but when people do these and show off the original cabinet it's just really neat to see the experience you used to get with arcades, it's a shame that even with how mobile society is now, that arcades are dying in the US.
Totally different game from a later time period. R360 used a modified version of G-LOC and Wing War, not After Burner.
I remember playing this once on a sitdown cabinet at an arcade in BC. I was quite impressed with how immersive it was, especially considering how old the machine was. :D I also used to play it all the time on MAME, and while it was fun, it just wasn't the same as playing the arcade cabinet.
oh I played this game so so so much on the Sega Master System. Loved the sound, the graphics! Amazing its time!
Old arcade games are awesome! Please do more of these (and fewer Sims stuff).
I'm glad you wasn't too hard on this, from your tweets I went in fearing the worst :) As a kid I spent way more time watching the arcade demo wishing I had some coins instead of playing it, but it was still awesome to watch haha. Only really played it at length when the Mega Drive one came around, which I think was a lot easier.
its also a nice little detail they colored the jet exhäust of enemies on later stages to greenish, giving you the sense that it's an advanced and tough enemy fighter.
i played these when i was younger... on the full motion arcade... awesome i tell ya! like all caps awesome
I remember the first time I played this even though I too only got to play on the upright cabinet, I freaked out when the bloody joystick shook! I didn't want to play it again after that, I was only about 7 or 8 at the time so that was new to me, now it's just something I take for granted.
I was able to play the cockpit version of Afterburner II, I loved it because the cockpit part of the cabinet moves with the joystick movement.
I remember those big machines you got into.
I think this is the first LGR video I have ever watched. (Long before this channel was made.)
Definitely would play this at the arcade (88-93).
I've only seen and played that 360 degree moving cabinet once but god it was awesome
Pretty cool cabinet. I like the joystick.
I'm fairly new to your channel my man, maybe been around for 3-4weeks but shyt dude I love your videos. Consider me a fan.
Thanks for this review. Yes, After Burner was hard as hell but really addicting.
oh man i haven't seen this game since i was a kid. i use to love playing it in the sit down cabinet even though i don't think i ever got passed the 1st mission.
played this as a 16 year old lad a real blast from the past
:D - great classic game and review. The best things about this era were the cabinets, gave the game so much more than just playing a game. Space Harrier and Out Run always amazed and while After Burner was good also it was over too quickly due to the ratio of dying so quickly - as opposed to winning at it. But, it was still a great playable game all the same. I was mostly a watcher of arcade games then, I did play too (but not very well), but enjoyed spending a lot of time in the arcades.
Good old classic Sega action at its finest!
In college, I worked at an arcade. This machine was always broke; not the game portion, but the moving cabinet.
i saw the sit down version at an arcade, it was epic.
Simple but enthusiast review, that's the way I like you.
I always remember the Terminator 2 mall scene, where John Connor is playing After Burner on a sit down cabinet.
Wow, never thought you would do a review on an arcade game Clint. I know it's not really your stick, but you should really do more reviews on them. This one in particular was short and sweet.
Afterburner 2 is definitely my all time favorite game with the full size. also galaxy force full size is great. Did anyone else here ever get a chance with the r360? I think it was five bucks to play back in 1993 at Grand prix raceorama in dania beach.
yay new vid :D
-Almost- a million subscribers!
I bloody loved that original sit-down cabinet, it was easily the most exciting experience available in an arcade at the time and well worth the 50p(!) price of admission, even if I invariably died in under a minute!
Love the Mortal Kombat cabinet right next to it!
***** a pop filter is the thing you put in front of a microphone to reduce the popping you get from certain letter sounds such as P, T, S and F
I have the 3ds version. it is the best one. arcade perfect, fun and they even replicate the button click noises of the arcade. I love it. M2 did an amazing job porting it to the 3ds
It took me forever to learn to master the game was not to attack but to dodge the missiles. Also the scoring was changed in AB1 to AB2. AB1 took points straight from killing enemies where AB2 took the same method as outrun, space harrier and thunderblade in adding the time.
I think this game was great at the time all time great sit down arcade cab.
I've seen a PC box of After Burner in various videos of yours. Is that the DOS port, and do you plan on reviewing it?
My favourite arcade game ever. We had a deluxe sit-down cabinet at our arcade until a few years ago.. Wonder what happened to it. Would have loved to get my hands on it.
That soundtrack is still so fucking amazing
I actually played in the motorized cabin on a vacaction in Italy. That was a long time ago, though. I died within seconds.
i still have this game for sega mega drive somewhere in the closet! hard as hell.
After Burner 3D: My first After Burner game, but it was from fans. But I enjoyed it.
Ker-POW!!
Have you heard of Sky Target? It's a spiritual successor to this. Was released as an arcade cabinet and on the Sega Saturn.
It really does, doesn't it? Especially when comparing to just a handful of years later, with early textured polygonal graphics. Those look like crap, if you ask me, whereas these still look awesome. Same goes for flat shaded polygonal 3D, it just looks cool.
Right Click speaker/volume icon on taskbar>Recording Devices> Double Click your mic> Advanced tab and choose the highest quality setting for Default Format
I freakin love this game... the first time i feel the excitment as an eleven year old inserting a coin and feel the jet thrust into the sky firing trailing missiles and doing 360... all with forcefeedback flightstick. Had to waist 2 coins to know how to dodge missiles.
I never get to stage 2, but the music is way up the top of coolness!
I remember playing this in the arcade... the 32X version is on point tho!
some years ago i was close to buying one of those arcade cabs you play on in the vid from a guy who had alot of old 80´s cabs, but we couldnt agree on the bidding so it all ran out in the sand.
I take it from the in arcade footage, the After Burner 2 Joystick was busted because Clint kept repeatedly crashing into the bottom right corner
They still have this at chuckie cheese where I live
I played a sit-down cab as late as around about 1998/9, in some campsite I was staying at. I'd never seen one before, and I've never seen once since, but needless to say it made me feel sick as all Hell. I just spent the rest of the weeks 'arcade budget' on House of the Dead after that.
They've released this on 3DS in Japan and hopefully will be releasing it worldwide soon. While I'm sure it'd be awesome to behold in stereoscopic 3D like the other Super Scaler games released so far are, the only words that come to mind to me are motion sickness. 3D OutRun is gonna be sweet, though.
I remember playing After Burner 3D on a demo-disk a number of years back, and it was in english :/ Also, I'm sorry but this game in Stereoscopics would suck. Instead of dying because of cheap deaths, you'd be dying because you can't tell WTF is going on!
Okay okay slow down there man. What 3D Afterburner/demo disc are you referring to? Because I'm referring to SEGA and M2's 3D Classics range on the 3DS eShop. I have 3D Galaxy Force II already and that's pretty great. Looks absolutely stunning and plays pretty well. And 3D Afterburner II came out in Japan not too long ago, with a worldwide release hopefully not too far off.
Also read my original comment very carefully because I do in fact share your opinion. Afterburner II would look cool in 3D, but you'd have to put the 3D slider on a low setting so you don't get eyestrain. I'm sure it'll be fine, but it's definitely a justified concern and it's nice to know I'm not alone there. I'd certainly like to try it out though.
Tommohawked i have 3d sonic the hedgehog and vomit city i wanted to throw up
Matthew Neathery I have 3D Galaxy Force II and it looks stunning.
dang, this game looks fun.
Give it up Dragos! Give it up!
Nostalgia
Great review! The guy next to you should insert a coin if he actually want to play Mortal Kombat haha
I played an after burner cabinet once, though it didn't move. when i tried playing it i believe i lasted all of 20 seconds before dying because i had no idea what i was doing. i remember thinking the game was ridiculously fast paced and i couldn't keep up.
We had one of these at the local Arcade until about 4 years ago when it broke and they got rid of it, but I heard the owner wants to try and get a Sega R-360 Wing War the full motion cabinet not the sit down.
DUUUDE i wanna play this
Has anyone noticed the outrun car when the plane is on the ground at the end?
I sphinx this channel needs some Rise of the Triad on the boil!
Older footage.
Pretty sure I saw John Conner playing this in T2 when the T-1000 spotted him.
They still have the sit down after burner in my local arcade...i must have put £1000's into that slot over the years
I was in an arcade once and some kid playing this in the motorised cabinet got thrown clean out of his chair onto the floor mid game :)
Hey!
Awesome Review as always! Keep up the good work! :D
I just have a quick question, what microphone do you use?
-Johannes
Hi! Can you make a review for Quarantine? Loved this game as a kid. Never figured out how to play it. =)
i love the game
hmm, no menchion of the r360 cockpit, or did that come under the sit down cab that gives you mosion sickness ?
I played the Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed so I am always interested in SEGA's past.
I played this a lot on my Atari Lynx xD
The R360 version was awesome.
IT'S AFTERBURNER! >
